Compact Machines is a mod in Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2, where it is version 6.0.3. Adds one simple game mechanic: Small rooms inside of blocks. It basically gives you the ability to build your contraptions inside of a single block. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Compact Machines?

1 part

Compact Machines is part of the pack at version 6.0.3, and it has been there since at least pack version 0.0.45.4. The pack's quest book gives it its own quest, "Compact Machines" quest.[1][2]

Where the quest book puts it

The quest sits in the chapter "Useful mods and Items", which is chapter 3 of 44 in the book and holds 37 quests. It's a general grab bag of handy mods and gadgets, so Compact Machines shares the chapter with things like "Building Gadget" quest, "Construction Wand" quest and a quest in "Useful mods and Items".[2]

The quest asks you to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device. It also lists an Item Filters "or" item as a second task.[2]

Tip: Don't mix this up with "Shrinking Device" quest in the same chapter. That quest is a separate one and asks for a different item from another mod, not the Compact Machines device.[2]

Unverified The listing for this chapter does not show the order of its quests, so what comes directly before and after the Compact Machines quest is unconfirmed. How the machines work and how they are crafted in this pack is also unconfirmed, because no guidebook or recipe source was available for this mod.

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

5 parts

Compact Machines lets you build pocket dimensions. The idea is simple: craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to go inside. So your first job is getting that device and your first machine.[3]

In the pack's quest book, the "Compact Machines" quest quest in the chapter "Useful mods and Items" asks you to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

Step 1: the Personal Shrinking Device

Make this first. It is how you enter a machine, and it also works as in-game documentation. Right click it in the overworld for more info. This is the mod's own recipe.[3][4]

Step 2: walls

The Compact Machine Wall is the base ingredient for your first machine. One craft gives you 8 of them. This is also a mod recipe.[4]

Step 3: your first machine

The smallest machine is the Compact Machine (Tiny). The pack adds this recipe itself, so follow the one below. Place the machine in the world and use the device on it to step inside.[3][4]

Watch out: The solid walls that make up a machine's room are unbreakable for non-creative players, so plan before you build in there. This is not the same item as the Compact Machine Wall you craft.[3]

Step 4: bigger machines

Larger sizes are upgrades of the one below them. The pack adds every one of these recipes, so use the versions shown here. You go from Compact Machine (Tiny) to Compact Machine (Small), then Compact Machine (Normal), Compact Machine (Large) and finally Compact Machine (Giant). Each one costs more than the last, and the Large and Giant recipes use pack-specific materials.[4]

Step 5: tunnels

Once you have a room, Tunnel items connect it to the outside. The mod has a recipe for each of the item, fluid and energy tunnels. Each craft gives 2 tunnels.[4]

How does Compact Machines work?

5 parts

Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, and then use a Personal Shrinking Device to step inside. Each placed machine is bound to a room of a certain size, and that room is where you build.[3]

Getting inside

The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is your key. You use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space. It also works as in-game documentation: right click it in the overworld for more info.[3]

Machine sizes and how the pack crafts them

The sizes are Compact Machine (Tiny), Compact Machine (Small), Compact Machine (Normal), Compact Machine (Large), Compact Machine (Giant) and a Maximum machine. A machine's tooltip shows its internal size as a cube, so you can check what you are holding before you place it.[3]

In this pack the crafted sizes form a ladder: each one is made from the machine one step below it. The pack adds these recipes itself with a script, so they are the pack's own and not the mod's defaults. The mod's common config also has recipes.vanillaRecipes set to true.[4][5][6]

The Maximum machine is not on the crafting ladder. The pack adds a separate recipe of the cradle type from crazyae2addons for it, and that recipe is defined as a layered block pattern, not a crafting grid recipe.[7]

Walls

The Compact Machine Wall is the base building piece. The mod's recipe makes 8 walls per craft, and the pack's Tiny machine recipe needs one.[4][6]

Crafting Shaped

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

This is the mod's own wall recipe.

The mod also has a Solid Compact Machine Wall and a Solid Compact Machine Wall (with Tunnel). One of its advancements is about obtaining a breakable wall block.[3]

Watch out: The solid wall's tooltip warns that it is unbreakable for non-creative players. Don't expect to pick it back up in survival.[3]

Tunnels: power, fluid and items

To move things in and out of a room you use tunnels. There are three types: Energy, Fluid and Item. Each tunnel recipe makes 2 Tunnel items of its type per craft.[3][4]

2× TunnelMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

2× TunnelMod recipe

Recipe id: compactmachines:tunnels/item

If a tunnel type has no free side left, the mod tells you there are no available sides for that tunnel type. If you use Jade, the mod has plugins that show machine information, tunnel presence, tunnel information and tunnel connections.[3]

Room upgrades and ownership

Rooms can take upgrades. The mod has a Chunkloader Upgrade and an Unnamed Room Upgrade, and you use an upgrade on a bound machine block to apply it. The mod tells you if an upgrade was applied, is already present, was removed, or failed to apply.[3]

Rooms also have an owner. Only the owner can rename the room or make changes to it, and everyone else gets a message saying so.[3]

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

4 parts

Compact Machines in this pack follow a simple ladder: each machine size is crafted from the one below it. The size ladder is where the pack changes things most, so this section walks you up it tier by tier.[4][6]

Where the quest book puts it

The pack's quest book has a quest called "Compact Machines" quest in the chapter "Useful mods and Items", which is chapter 3 of 44 in the book. That chapter has 37 quests. The quest's tasks are the Personal Shrinking Device and an item filter.[2]

Tip: Don't mix this up with the separate quest "Shrinking Device" quest in the same chapter. Its task item is shrink:shrinking_device, not the Compact Machines one.[2]

Step 1: the shrinking device and walls

The Personal Shrinking Device uses the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.[4]

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: compactmachines:personal_shrinking_device

This is the mod's own recipe, not one the pack added.

The Compact Machine Wall is also a mod recipe, and one craft gives you 8 walls. You need a wall to start the machine ladder.[4]

Crafting Shaped

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

One craft makes 8 walls.

Step 2: the five machine tiers

The recipes for all the machines are added by the pack's own KubeJS script. Every machine from Small upwards is crafted around the previous tier, so you can't skip a step. Only the first tier starts from a wall.[4][6]

  1. Compact Machine (Tiny): the first tier, built around a wall.[4][6]
  2. Compact Machine (Small): built around the Tiny machine.[4][6]
  3. Compact Machine (Normal): built around the Small machine.[4][6]
  4. Compact Machine (Large): built around the Normal machine.[4][6]
  5. Compact Machine (Giant): built around the Large machine.[4][6]

The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack ingredients for each tier, so check them before you plan your resources.[4][6]

How does Compact Machines work with other mods?

3 parts

Compact Machines mostly stays in its own lane in this pack, but the two biggest tiers pull in materials from other mods, and a pack script lets you collect a Botania item inside the Compact Machines dimension.[4][6][8]

Upgrading to Large and Giant machines

The pack sets its own crafting recipes for the whole upgrade path. The Tiny, Small and Normal tiers are built around the previous machine with plain copper, gold and emerald blocks. From the Large tier up, you need pack-specific materials. The Compact Machine (Large) uses Sculk Alloy Block. The Compact Machine (Giant) reaches into Evolved Mekanism for its Hypercharged Alloy Block and also uses Starmetal Block. Both recipes are added by the pack, so don't expect the mod's defaults here.[4][6]

Upgrades the Normal machine to Large. This recipe is added by the pack.

Upgrades the Large machine to Giant. This recipe is added by the pack.

Pebbles from inside a machine

A pack script lets you collect Pebble by right-clicking grass or dirt while crouching. It works in the Overworld and also in the Compact Machines dimension, so you can gather pebbles inside your machine rooms too. Your main hand must be empty or already holding a pebble, and holding a block won't work.[8]

In the quest book

The quest "Compact Machines" quest sits in the "Useful mods and Items" chapter, which is chapter 3 of 44 in the book. It asks for the Personal Shrinking Device and also has an Item Filters task (the "or" filter). That chapter groups quests for many different mods.[2]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Compact Machines?

1 part

In this pack, Compact Machines has one quest, and it sits in the "Useful mods and Items" chapter. That is chapter 3 of 44 in the quest book, and it holds 37 quests in total.[2]

The Compact Machines quest

The quest is called "Compact Machines" quest. It has two item tasks. The first is the Personal Shrinking Device. The second is an item filter entry (itemfilters:or), which is the same kind of task the chapter uses for several other quests.[2]

The chapter is a collection of quests for individual mods and items. Compact Machines is one entry among them, so there is no step-by-step order to follow for this mod. The sources don't say where the quest sits relative to the others in the chapter.[2]

Tip: Don't confuse it with "Shrinking Device" quest. That quest is in the same chapter but asks for the shrink:shrinking_device item, not the Compact Machines one.[2]

Which Compact Machines config options matter?

Compact Machines keeps things simple in this pack. The only option the sources cover is in the common config file, and it controls whether the mod's recipes are the vanilla-style ones.[5]

The sources don't say what this option's mod default is, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed it. If you want to see how a specific Compact Machines item is crafted here, check its recipe on the site, since that shows the exact in-pack recipe.[5]

Unverified Other Compact Machines options, such as anything about machine sizes or room behaviour, were not provided in the sources, so their values in this pack are unverified.
