What is Mob Grinding Utils?
This pack includes Mob Grinding Utils version 1.1.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The sources here only show it through the pack's quest book, so this overview covers what the quests ask of you.[1]
The pack's quest book places the mod in the "resource_generation" chapter. Its quests there are about getting hold of the mod's own items.[2]
- Quest "Mob Mashing" quest has item tasks for the Mob Masher and the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting.[2]
- Quest "Moving Mobs" quest asks for the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor. Either item completes the task.[2]
Both quests are untitled in the pack's quest data, and they sit in the same chapter. The sources don't show what comes before or after them.[2]
Unverified The sources here do not show how these items work, their recipes, or any config changes the pack makes to this mod. They also do not show whether the ATM Star path uses the mod, and no in-jar guidebook was available. Check the quest chapter in-game for those details.
How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?
5 parts
Mob Grinding Utils gives you the tools to kill mobs and collect what they drop, including XP. In this pack's quest book, the mod's first appearances are in the resource_generation chapter, which asks for a Mob Masher and a way to move mobs around. Here is what to build first, and why.[2][3]
Iron Spikes
Iron Spikes are the basic killer in the mod, and the Mob Masher recipe uses them, so you make them first. They also drop the mob's XP. The catch is that mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills.[3][4]

The Mob Masher
The Mob Masher is the mod's advanced modular mob grinder, and it is one of the tasks of quest "Mob Mashing" quest in the resource_generation chapter. Unlike spikes, mobs it mashes do count as player kills. You can improve it with Mob Masher Upgrades.[2][3]

The same quest also asks for the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting, so that is a good first upgrade to make.[2]

Getting mobs to the Masher
Another quest in that chapter, "Moving Mobs" quest, accepts either the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor. Pick whichever suits your build. The fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces and can take Mob Fan Upgrades. The conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector, and mobs can spawn on it.[2][3]

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area and can be configured to push out on any side. Fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories, so it makes a good collection point. Absorption Radius Upgrades increase its range.[3][4]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?
6 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is built from a handful of separate machines that you connect yourself. The sources don't describe any machine as a fixed multiblock structure, so think of it as a kit: you move mobs with fans and conveyors, kill them with the masher or spikes, and collect the loot and XP with hoppers and tanks.[3]
Moving mobs
The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces. You can toggle its area of effect in its GUI, and you tune it with three upgrades. Each upgrade adds +1 to one dimension: Mob Fan Distance Upgrade adds distance up to a max of 10, Mob Fan Height Upgrade adds height up to a max of 3, and Mob Fan Width Upgrade adds width up to a max of 3.[3][4]
The pack sets fanStrongerBlades to false. When that option is on, the fan blades are stronger and the fan is only blocked by more solid blocks. In this pack it's off, so keep your fan's path clear.[5]
The Entity Conveyor moves both mobs and items along a horizontal vector. Mobs can also spawn on it, so keep that in mind if you build it into a farm.[3][4]

Killing mobs
The Mob Masher (Mob Masher) is the advanced, modular grinder. Mobs it kills do count as player kills, which matters for player-only drops.[3]
The Iron Spikes are the basic option. They also drop the mob's XP, but mobs they kill do not count as player kills.[3][4]
The masher takes six upgrade items, each adding +1 of its enchantment-style effect: Mob Masher Upgrade Sharpness, Mob Masher Upgrade Smite, Mob Masher Upgrade Arthropods, Mob Masher Upgrade Looting, Mob Masher Upgrade Fire and Mob Masher Upgrade Beheading. In the pack, masherMaxUpgrade is 10, the same as the mod default. The allowed range is 0 to 10.[3][4][5]

Collecting loot, XP and fluids
The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can set it to push out on any side. Fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories. Its area of effect can be toggled and its position offset, both in its GUI.[3][4]
Absorption Radius Upgrade raises the hopper's range by +1 each, up to a max of 6.[3]
For storage, the Jumbo Tank is a larger version of the Singularity Tank (Singularity Tank) and holds 1,024 buckets of any liquid. An XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns fluid XP back into orbs.[3][4]

Turning XP into jellies
The XP Solidifier solidifies fluid XP into edible XP jellies. It needs an XP Mould and fluid XP in its tank. You can configure it to export horizontally, and XP Speed Upgrades make it faster.[3]
A XP Mould Blank crafts into the moulds, and a blank can be turned into an XP Mould Jelly Baby. Crafting the baby mould back gives you a blank again.[3][4]

Spawning mobs
The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It uses a mob egg in its top slot and is fuelled by Solid XP Jelly Babies. Its area of effect can be toggled and its position offset in its GUI.[3][4]
Entity Spawner Width Upgrade and Entity Spawner Height Upgrade add +1 each, up to a max of 5. XP Speed Upgrades also enhance the spawner.[3][4]
Spawn boosters and utility blocks
- Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs, and a light level below 10 stops those spawns. It does not work in ocean biomes, and it snow-caps at night if exposed to the sky.[3]
- Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs, and a light level of 5 and above stops those spawns. It ignites in daylight if exposed to the sky.[3]
- Tinted Glass lets you see inside the farm without letting light in, and it's tough enough to withstand Withers.[3]
- The Ender Inhibitor Active inhibits teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It attaches to any side of a solid block, and you right-click it to toggle it on or off.[3][4]
- The Ender Dragon Death Muffler stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius. Right-click it to hide the boss bar.[3][4]
How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?
4 parts
The pack's quest book mentions Mob Grinding Utils only in the resource_generation chapter. This section follows those quests first, then covers the rest of the mod through its in-pack recipes.[2]

Upgrades with in-pack recipes
The quests stop there. Everything else is recipe-only, and the pack's recipe dump gives each upgrade its own recipe. Here is what is available, grouped by the machine it belongs to:[2][4]
- Mob Masher: Mob Masher Upgrade Sharpness, Mob Masher Upgrade Smite, Mob Masher Upgrade Arthropods, Mob Masher Upgrade Fire and Mob Masher Upgrade Beheading, alongside the Looting upgrade from the quest.[4]
- Mob Fan: Mob Fan Height Upgrade, Mob Fan Width Upgrade and Mob Fan Distance Upgrade.[4]
- Entity Spawner: Entity Spawner Height Upgrade and Entity Spawner Width Upgrade for the Entity Spawner.[4]
- Absorption Hopper: Absorption Radius Upgrade for the Absorption Hopper.[4]
- XP Solidifier: XP Speed Upgrade for the XP Solidifier.[4]
XP handling
No quest covers XP handling, but the recipes show a full chain. It includes the Singularity Tank, the Jumbo Tank, the XP Drain Singularity Tank, the XP Tap and the XP Solidifier. Solidified XP comes as XP Jelly Baby and Solid XP, and the Entity Spawner recipe uses the block form.[4]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work with other mods?
2 parts
Mob Grinding Utils has only a couple of confirmed crossovers with other mods in this pack. Both are recipes added by the pack for a custom machine, the World Engine.[4]
World Engine recipes
The first World Engine recipe is where Mob Grinding Utils meets other mods. Its inputs include the Mob Masher Upgrade Beheading plus items such as Dragon Heart, Wyvern Core, Dragonskin, Dragon Egg and Dragon Head. The recipe dump does not list the output, so use the recipe block below as your reference.[4]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)

The Mob Masher beheading upgrade is one of the inputs to this pack-added recipe.
The second recipe pairs the Singularity Tank with items from other mods such as Ender Tank and Blazegold Ingot, plus vanilla Obsidian. The dump does not list the output, so the recipe block below is your reference.[4]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)

The Singularity Tank is one of the inputs to this pack-added recipe.
Quests
The "resource_generation" quest chapter has quests that use this mod's items. One asks for the Mob Masher and the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting ("Mob Mashing" quest). Another accepts either the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor ("Moving Mobs" quest). These tasks only involve Mob Grinding Utils items, so they do not tie the mod to any other mod.[2]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Mob Grinding Utils?
In this pack, Mob Grinding Utils shows up in the resource_generation quest chapter. The quests there are untitled, so you'll recognise them by their tasks rather than by a name.[2]
- Quest "Mob Mashing" quest asks you to hand in the Mob Masher and the Mob Masher Upgrade Looting as item tasks.[2]
- Quest "Moving Mobs" quest asks for an item task that accepts either the Mob Fan or the Entity Conveyor.[2]
The chapter lists them in that order. So the quest book first has you get the Mob Masher together with its Looting upgrade, then either a Mob Fan or an Entity Conveyor.[2]
Which Mob Grinding Utils config options matter?
The pack's server config for Mob Grinding Utils spells out only a couple of options, so this section is short. They both live in the mod's server config file.[5]
- fanStrongerBlades is set to false in this pack. When it is on, the fan blades are stronger and the fan is only blocked by more solid blocks. With it off, that stronger-blade behavior is not active.[5]
- masherMaxUpgrade is set to 10 in this pack, the same as the mod default of 10. It controls the maximum number of upgrades for the masher, and the allowed range is 0 to 10.[5]
