What is EntityCulling?

EntityCulling is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 1.11.2, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[1]

It isn't a new addition either. The mod was already in the pack as of version 1.0.0 or earlier, so it has been there from the start.[1]

Unverified The sources for this guide don't describe in detail what EntityCulling does in the pack, and there is no in-jar guidebook to draw on, so this overview doesn't go into its behaviour or settings.

How do you get started with EntityCulling?

The only thing the pack's files let me confirm about this mod is its config, so this section is short. The settings live in config/entityculling.json, and that is the place to start.[2]

In this pack, safeMode is set to true, and configVersion is 9.[2]

Unverified I could not confirm any items to craft, recipes or quest steps for this mod in the pack, so there is no first-items list here. What each option does is also unconfirmed from the pack's files.

How does EntityCulling work?

There is not much to dig into with EntityCulling's core mechanics, and I'd rather tell you that than make something up. The only thing the pack gives us for this mod is its config file, so that is all this section can cover.[2]

In this pack, safeMode is set to true. The same file sets configVersion to 9.[2]

Unverified What safe mode changes in practice, and how the mod decides what to cull, is not explained in the sources available for this guide. The same goes for any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item handling, and no recipes in the pack produce items from this mod.

Which EntityCulling config options matter?

The pack's EntityCulling config file, config/entityculling.json, is very small. There isn't much to tweak here, and these are the values the pack sets.[2]

What changed in EntityCulling between versions?

2 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 ships EntityCulling 1.11.2, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[1]

Release notes, newest first

  • 1.11.2 (the version in the pack): a hotfix that stores BlockPos in its own variable. This fixes block entities not being culled at all on some older Minecraft versions, because of a silent failure (the changelog is not sure exactly which versions). It also fixes a game crash with Kaleidoscope Cookery Refabricated. The changelog adds that Create: Nowheel 2.0.0 needs an update to work with EntityCulling 1.11.0 and newer.[3]
  • 1.11.1: fixes missing interpolation of tick culled entities in 26.3, which caused invisibility and fast movements. It also fixes older NeoForge versions, and the local player is never culled now, which prevents crashes such as during freecam in 26.3.[3]
  • 1.11.0: the cull thread is fully unhooked from the entity game logic. NeoForge now uses the getRenderBoundingBox method for block entities, and culled entities respect name display distances. It also added 26.3 Fabric/NeoForge and 26.2 NeoForge support.[3]
  • 1.10.2: adds an option to make leaves solid for culling, meant for use with See-Through Leaves set to Off or with a bushy leaves resource pack. It also adds support for the Lunar Client.[4]
  • 1.10.1: marks 26.1.x as compatible, adds some new debug tools (work in progress) and updates libraries to fix problems like broken controls.[5]
  • 1.10.0: adds Fabric 26.1 support, with large build script and library updates, plus a German translation.[6]
  • 1.9.5: fixes a nametag inconsistency that caused fps loss in later versions. It also adds an option to force a culling box on unconfigured display entities. That can raise fps on servers and maps that did not configure their displays, but can cause visual issues with really big displays. It is off by default.[7]
  • 1.9.4: adds 1.21.11 Fabric/NeoForge support and switches the build from a preprocessor to Stonecutter. It also introduces a TRender options menu, where you can change the config screen UI style and enable automatic stack trace reporting.[8]
  • 1.9.3: fixes a rare race condition crash with Mekanism and Sodium in 1.21.1 and older, and fixes marker armor stands getting a too small culling box. The "voidscape:corrupted_pawn" entity was added to the default tick whitelist config.[9]
  • 1.9.2: fixes laggy culled name tag movement in 1.21.9+ and fixes invisible armor stands not being culled when they should be.[10]

What 1.11.x means for performance

The 1.11.0 rework pulls the required (block) entity data on the main thread, to prevent crashes with other mods that can't handle async data lookups. That costs some performance in the main client tick. The author expects under 1ms every 5 ticks (250ms) in reasonable conditions, up from about 0.5ms in the previous release.[3]

Tip: The 1.11.0 notes mention a safeMode flag in the config file. It moves all lookups away from the main thread and removes that overhead, but it is meant for setups that are not hit by the async access crashes. If you run into issues, the changelog says to contact the author via GitHub or Discord.[3]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as entityculling, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
