What is EntityCulling?

This pack ships EntityCulling at version 1.10.2, using the NeoForge build (the file is entityculling-neoforge-1.10.2-mc1.21.1.jar).[1]

It has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier, so it is part of the pack's standard mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified What the mod does in detail, and any settings it offers in this pack, could not be confirmed from the available sources, so this guide does not describe them.

How do you get started with EntityCulling?

1 part

There is nothing to craft to get started with this mod. The sources I have list no recipes for it, so there are no recipe blocks here, and I won't invent a first-steps order.[2]

Unverified No items, recipes, quests or in-game descriptions for EntityCulling were found in the sources for this pack. How the mod behaves in play beyond its config file is unconfirmed. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

What the pack sets in its config

What you can look at is the config file the pack ships. It uses config version 7 (configVersion), and the pack has skipMarkerArmorStands set to true.[2]

The pack also fills in tickCullingWhitelist, which is a list of entity ids. It includes the vanilla boat and chest boat variants, the bamboo raft, the display entities (block, item and text), and the firework rocket. It also holds Create contraption entities such as create:contraption, create:gantry_contraption, create:stationary_contraption and create:carriage_contraption. A few entries come from other mods, such as the alexscaves:gum_worm and drg_flares:drg_flare entities.[2]

Tip: If you want to change any of these values, they are all in config/entityculling.json. Take a copy of the file first so you can compare against what the pack ships.[2]

How does EntityCulling work?

2 parts

EntityCulling has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling for you to set up. In this pack it is only configured through one file, and that file is the whole story of how the mod is set up here.[2]

What the pack sets

The tick culling whitelist

The whitelist covers a few groups of entities. The first is vanilla boats, chest boats and bamboo rafts, including the pale oak, cherry and mangrove variants. The second is the vanilla display entities (block, item and text) and firework rockets.[2]

Several Create contraption types are listed too: the plain, gantry, stationary and carriage contraptions. If you build moving machines with Create, this is the part of the list that matters to you.[2]

The rest come from other mods: the gum worm and its segment from Alex's Caves, the flare and flares entries from drg_flares, the campfire flame from avm_staff, and three builder entries (rendering, existing and seat) under the mts namespace.[2]

Unverified The sources only show the values the pack uses. They do not describe what each option does in detail, so how the whitelist and the armor stand setting change behavior in game is unconfirmed.

Which EntityCulling config options matter?

2 parts

EntityCulling has only a few options in this pack's config file, so this is a quick one. Everything lives in config/entityculling.json, and the file sets three keys.[2]

The three keys the pack sets

What is in the tick culling whitelist

The list is long, but it falls into a few groups. The biggest is vanilla boats: every wood type of boat and chest boat is listed, plus the bamboo raft and bamboo chest raft. Vanilla also contributes the block display, item display and text display entities, and the firework rocket.[2]

Create is represented by its contraption entities: create:contraption, create:gantry_contraption, create:stationary_contraption and create:carriage_contraption.[2]

A handful of entries come from other mods: alexscaves:gum_worm, alexscaves:gum_worm_segment, drg_flares:drg_flares, drg_flares:drg_flare, avm_staff:campfire_flame, and four mts entities (mts:builder_rendering, mts:builder_existing, mts:builder_seat).[2]

Tip: If you add a modded entity to this list yourself, use its full namespace:path id, the same way the existing entries are written.[2]

Unverified The sources only show the values this pack uses. They don't show EntityCulling's own defaults or describe what each option does in detail, so which of these values the pack changed from the mod default is unconfirmed.

What changed in EntityCulling between versions?

2 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.15.3 ships EntityCulling 1.10.2, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs. I only have the ones for 1.9.2 to 1.10.2.[1][3][4][5]

Changes that matter on 1.21.1

  • 1.10.2 (the version in your pack): a new option makes leaves solid for culling. Use it with See-Through Leaves set to Off, or with a bushy leaves resource pack. It also added support for the Lunar Client.[1][3]
  • 1.10.1: the libraries were updated to fix things like broken controls. It also added some new debug tools, which the author calls WIP.[6]
  • 1.9.5: fixed a nametag inconsistency that caused fps loss in later versions. It also added an option to force a culling box on unconfigured display entities. This can raise fps on servers and maps that never configured their displays, but it can cause visual issues for really big displays. The changelog gives the mod default as off.[7]
  • 1.9.4: the build system moved from a preprocessor to Stonecutter, and the author asked for reports of any new issues.[8]
  • 1.9.3: fixed a rare race condition crash with Mekanism and Sodium in 1.21.1 and older. It also fixed marker armor stands getting a culling box that was too small. The mod's default tick whitelist config gained "voidscape:corrupted_pawn".[4]
  • 1.9.2: fixed invisible armor stands not being culled when they should be. The changelog says this boosts performance in places like the Hypixel Housing lobby.[5]
Tip: Since 1.9.4 there is an options menu on the TRender library. It lets you change the UI style of the config screens and turn on automatic stack trace reporting for the author's mods. The changelog says only the crash report, loaded mods and versions are collected, with no personal identifiable information. It may be hidden on Fabric, but this pack runs NeoForge.[1][8]

Changes for other Minecraft versions

Several entries target other game versions, so they don't change anything in your 1.21.1 pack. 1.10.0 added Fabric 26.1 support, and 1.10.1 marked 26.1.x as compatible. 1.9.4 added 1.21.11 support for Fabric and NeoForge. Two fixes target 1.21.9 and newer: laggy culled name tag movement in 1.9.2, and log lines about pack metadata in 1.9.3. The rest of 1.10.0 was translation updates and build script work.[4][5][6][8][9]
