What is EntityCulling?

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 guide

EntityCulling is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 1.11.2, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[1]

It isn't a new addition either. The mod was already in the pack as of version 1.0.0 or earlier, so it has been there from the start.[1]

Unverified The sources for this guide don't describe in detail what EntityCulling does in the pack, and there is no in-jar guidebook to draw on, so this overview doesn't go into its behaviour or settings.

How do you get started with EntityCulling?

2 parts

Good news: EntityCulling has nothing for you to craft or set up. There is no first item to make here, so the only things worth knowing at the start are the settings the pack ships with.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show any crafting recipes or any quest chapter for EntityCulling, so this guide does not point you to a recipe or quest to start with. If you want more detail, the settings live in config/entityculling.json.

What the pack sets in the config

The pack's config file is config/entityculling.json. These are the values it ships with, so you know what you are starting from.[2]

The options skipEntityCulling, skipBlockEntityCulling, forceDisplayCulling, debugMode and disableF3 are all false in the pack.[2]

Whitelists the pack ships

The pack fills in several whitelists. blockEntityWhitelist lists create:rope_pulley, create:hose_pulley, minecraft:beacon, botania:flame_ring, botania:magic_missile, botania:falling_star, and betterend:eternal_pedestal. entityWhitelist lists botania:mana_burst, drg_flares:drg_flares, and quark:soul_bead.[2]

tickCullingWhitelist is a longer list. It covers the vanilla boats and rafts, the display entities, and minecraft:firework_rocket. It also covers Create contraptions, Create Big Cannons carriages, and the Cinematic Cataclysm cutscene entities, among others.[2]

Tip: If you edit the file, leave configVersion alone. The pack has it at 9.[2]

How does EntityCulling work?

3 parts

The sources here describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item handling for EntityCulling. All they show is the pack's settings file, config/entityculling.json, so this section covers only the values the pack sets there.[2]

Numbers the pack sets

On/off options

These options are switched on in the pack: tickCulling, blockEntityFrustumCulling, safeMode and renderNametagsThroughWalls.[2]

These are switched off: skipEntityCulling, skipBlockEntityCulling, forceDisplayCulling, solidLeaves, debugMode and disableF3.[2]

Whitelists

entityWhitelist lists these entries in the pack: botania:mana_burst, drg_flares:drg_flares and quark:soul_bead.[2]

blockEntityWhitelist lists these entries: create:rope_pulley, create:hose_pulley, botania:flame_ring, botania:magic_missile, botania:falling_star, minecraft:beacon and betterend:eternal_pedestal.[2]

tickCullingWhitelist is a long list. It names the vanilla display entities (block, text and item display), firework rockets, and many boat, chest boat and raft types. It also names several Create contraption entities (contraption, gantry, carriage and stationary), the Create Big Cannons carriage and pitch contraptions, and alexscaves:gum_worm with its segment. The remaining entries are avm_staff:campfire_flame, voidscape:corrupted_pawn, drg_flares:drg_flares, drg_flares:drg_flare and Cinematic Cataclysm cutscene entities for Scylla, Maledictus, Leviathan, Ancient Remnant and Ignis.[2]

Unverified What each option does in detail is not shown in the sources here. The mod has no guidebook or lang descriptions in the material provided, and the only source is the values in config/entityculling.json. Check that file in your own install for the exact settings.

Which EntityCulling config options matter?

4 parts

All of EntityCulling's settings live in one file, config/entityculling.json. Here is exactly how this pack has it set up, so you can compare it with your own install.[2]

Numbers

Safety and debugging

safeMode is true in this pack. debugMode and disableF3 are both false. The file's configVersion is 9.[2]

Whitelists

entityWhitelist holds botania:mana_burst, drg_flares:drg_flares and quark:soul_bead.[2]

blockEntityWhitelist holds create:rope_pulley, create:hose_pulley, botania:flame_ring, botania:magic_missile, botania:falling_star, minecraft:beacon and betterend:eternal_pedestal.[2]

tickCullingWhitelist is the longest list. It covers vanilla boats, rafts and chest variants, the block, item and text display entities, and firework rockets. It also covers Create contraptions (create:contraption, create:gantry_contraption, create:stationary_contraption, create:carriage_contraption), Create Big Cannons carriages and pitch contraptions, and several entries from Alex's Caves, Cinematic Cataclysm cutscenes, Voidscape and DRG Flares.[2]

What changed in EntityCulling between versions?

4 parts

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships EntityCulling 1.11.3, and the mod was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[3]

1.11.3 (the version in this pack)

  • Frustum culling now uses the whitelist and no longer uses the uninflated hitbox. The changelog says this should fix odd pop-in and pop-out when you just turn the camera.[4]
  • The entity reference is now weak. Together with Fabric API, one of the author's libraries (TRansition) could leak the entire level when leaving a world, wasting memory.[4]

1.11.2 hotfix

  • The mod now uses its own variable to store the BlockPos. This fixes older Minecraft versions (below 1.21.1, though the changelog itself is unsure of the exact cutoff) not culling block entities at all because of a silent failure in production environments.[5]
  • The same change fixes a game crash with "Kaleidoscope Cookery Refabricated".[5]
  • Compatibility note from the author: Create: Nowheel 2.0.0 needs to be updated to work with EntityCulling 1.11.0 and newer.[5]

1.11.1 hotfix

  • Fixed missing interpolation of tick-culled entities in 26.3, which caused invisibility and fast movements.[5]
  • Fixed older NeoForge versions.[5]
  • The local player is never culled now, which prevents crashes such as during freecam in 26.3.[5]

1.11.0

  • The cull thread is fully unhooked from the entity game logic.[5]
  • NeoForge now uses the getRenderBoundingBox method for block entities, and a getRenderBoundingBox method was added for Fabric.[5]
  • Culled entities now respect name display distances.[5]
  • Added 26.3 builds for Fabric and NeoForge and a 26.2 build for NeoForge.[5]

The 1.11.0 release also reworked how the mod extracts (block)entity data on the main thread, to prevent crashes with other mods that can't handle async data lookups. The author says this costs some performance in the main client tick: under 1ms every 5 ticks (250ms) in reasonable conditions, up from about 0.5ms in the previous release.[5]

Tip: If your mod setup isn't affected by those async access crashes, the mod has a safeMode flag in its config file that moves all the lookups away from the main thread and removes that overhead. The author describes this as the adventurous option, so only try it if you're comfortable testing.[5]

Unverified The sources here show no pack changelog entries for EntityCulling, so what changed for this mod between FTB Evolution 2 releases is not shown. The pack's own changelogs are where that would be told.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as entityculling, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
