What is EntityCulling?

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.15.3 guide

This pack ships EntityCulling at version 1.10.2, using the NeoForge build (the file is entityculling-neoforge-1.10.2-mc1.21.1.jar).[1]

It has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier, so it is part of the pack's standard mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified What the mod does in detail, and any settings it offers in this pack, could not be confirmed from the available sources, so this guide does not describe them.

How do you get started with EntityCulling?

3 parts

The sources here show no recipes and no quests for EntityCulling, so there is no first item to craft. In this pack it is a settings-only mod, and your first step is knowing which options exist and what the pack set them to.[2]

Everything lives in the file config/entityculling.json. Here is what this pack has in it, so you know where to look if you ever want to change something.[2]

Numbers this pack has set

Whitelists

The pack fills in several lists. entityWhitelist holds botania:mana_burst, drg_flares:drg_flares and quark:soul_bead. blockEntityWhitelist holds create:rope_pulley, create:hose_pulley, minecraft:beacon, betterend:eternal_pedestal and some Botania entries: botania:flame_ring, botania:magic_missile and botania:falling_star.[2]

tickCullingWhitelist is the long one. It lists vanilla boats and rafts, display entities (block, item and text), firework rockets, Create contraptions, Create Big Cannons carriages and several cutscene entities, among others. If a modded entity ever behaves oddly, this is the list to check first.[2]

Unverified What each of these options does in detail is not shown by the sources here, because the mod has no in-jar guide or lang descriptions available to this guide. Check the option names in config/entityculling.json before changing anything.

How does EntityCulling work?

3 parts

EntityCulling has no machines, multiblocks or power, fluid and item handling to learn. The only information about it in the sources is the pack's config file, so this section covers the settings the pack uses and nothing else.[2]

Numeric settings in this pack

On/off switches

In this pack, blockEntityFrustumCulling and tickCulling are true. renderNametagsThroughWalls is also true.[2]

skipBlockEntityCulling, skipEntityCulling, forceDisplayCulling, solidLeaves, debugMode and disableF3 are all false.[2]

Whitelists

The pack fills its whitelists with specific entries. blockEntityWhitelist holds these block entities:[2]

  • create:rope_pulley and create:hose_pulley[2]
  • minecraft:beacon[2]
  • betterend:eternal_pedestal[2]
  • botania:flame_ring, botania:magic_missile and botania:falling_star (from Botania)[2]

entityWhitelist holds botania:mana_burst, drg_flares:drg_flares and quark:soul_bead.[2]

tickCullingWhitelist is the longest list. It includes the vanilla boats, chest boats and bamboo rafts, plus minecraft:firework_rocket and the block, item and text display entities. It also names Create contraption types (create:contraption, create:gantry_contraption, create:stationary_contraption and create:carriage_contraption) and Create Big Cannons entries (createbigcannons:cannon_carriage and createbigcannons:pitch_contraption). The rest are entries from other mods: alexscaves:gum_worm, avm_staff:campfire_flame, voidscape:corrupted_pawn, some mts:builder entries, some drg_flares entries and several cinematiccataclysm cutscene entities.[2]

Unverified What each option does in detail is not shown by the sources here. The mod has no in-jar guidebook or reusable documentation available, so the config file only tells you the pack's values, not the exact behaviour behind them.

Which EntityCulling config options matter?

4 parts

EntityCulling is configured in config/entityculling.json, and this pack ships it with configVersion set to 8 (configVersion). Here is exactly what the pack sets, so you can compare it with your own file.[2]

Culling switches

Numbers

Debug options

debugMode is false and disableF3 is false, so both are left off in this pack.[2]

Whitelists

The pack fills in its whitelists. entityWhitelist holds botania:mana_burst, drg_flares:drg_flares and quark:soul_bead.[2]

blockEntityWhitelist holds create:rope_pulley, create:hose_pulley, minecraft:beacon, botania:flame_ring, botania:magic_missile, botania:falling_star and betterend:eternal_pedestal.[2]

tickCullingWhitelist is the long one. It includes Create contraption entities such as create:contraption and create:gantry_contraption, Create Big Cannons entities, the vanilla boats and chest boats, the vanilla display entities (block, item and text), minecraft:firework_rocket, and the cutscene entities from cinematiccataclysm.[2]

Tip: If a modded entity or block entity looks like it vanishes or freezes in the pack, check these whitelists first, since that is where the pack lists the things it wants left alone.[2]

What changed in EntityCulling between versions?

1 part

Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships EntityCulling 1.10.5, using the Forge build for Minecraft 1.20.1. The mod was already in the pack by 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so you have been running it for a while.[3]

Unverified No pack changelog entries mentioning EntityCulling were available, so any change the pack itself made to this mod is unverified.

Recent mod releases

These notes come from the mod's own changelogs. Some entries are about other loaders or Minecraft versions than the one in this pack, and I've flagged those.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

  • 1.10.5 (the version in the pack): fixes older NeoForge versions crashing on startup because of keybinds. That is a NeoForge fix, and the pack uses the Forge jar, so the changelog doesn't say it affects you.[3][4]
  • 1.10.3: the default config was updated so it no longer breaks Create Big Cannons entities. This is a change to the mod's default config, and the sources don't show what the pack's own config uses. It also added 26.2.x Fabric and 26.1.x NeoForge builds, updated the zh-cn translation, and reworked the build scripts again.[5]
  • 1.10.2: adds an option to make leaves solid for culling. The changelog says to use it with See-Through Leaves set to Off, or with a bushy leaves resource pack. It also added support for the Lunar Client and updated the pl_pl and fr_fr translations.[6]
  • 1.10.1: set 26.1.x as compatible, added some new debug tools (marked work in progress), updated libraries to fix problems like broken controls, and set client-side and Java version flags on Curseforge.[7]
  • 1.9.5: fixes a nametag inconsistency that caused fps loss in later versions. It adds an option to force a culling box on unconfigured display entities. That can raise fps on servers and maps that never configured their displays, but may cause visual issues with really big displays. It is off by default. It also added new translations for block entity culling.[8]
  • 1.9.4: added 1.21.11 Fabric and NeoForge support and switched the build from a preprocessor to Stonecutter. It also introduced a new options menu on the TRender library, where you can change the UI style of the config screens and turn on automatic stack trace reporting. The changelog says no personally identifiable information is collected, only the crash report, loaded mods and versions.[9]
Tip: The TRender options menu can be hidden on Fabric's mod menu under "tr7zw Library Modules", and possibly by the "Libraries: Shown/Hidden" setting at the top. The changelog describes this for Fabric, so it isn't confirmed for this Forge pack.[9]

"From pack files" means the list came from the pack's own files; "from the published release" means ForgeBase read the jars of the release itself.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as entityculling, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
