What is Construction Sticks?
Construction Sticks is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 1.4.1, in the file ConstructionSticks-1.21.1-1.4.1.jar.[1]
The mod has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]
How do you get started with Construction Sticks?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Construction Sticks is all about building faster: hold a stick, click, and you extend blocks in any direction in one go. In this pack's quest book it is the quest a quest in "?" (Faster Building), in the chapter "Useful Items & Tips", group "Forgotten Knowledge" (chapter 18 of 22).[2]
Step 1: Craft your first stick
Start with the Stickiest Stick, the wooden tier of stick. In this pack it has 127 durability, up from the mod default of 59, so it is a cheap way to learn the building controls.[3][4]

Step 2: Move up a tier
Sticks use up durability as they place blocks, so the next goal is a better tier. This pack raised the durability of every stick compared with the mod defaults:[4][5]
- Stickiest Stick: 127 durability (mod default 59).[3][4]
- Copper Stick: 256 durability (mod default 131).[3][4]
- Iron Stick: 1,024 durability (mod default 250).[3][4]
- Diamond Stick: 4,096 durability (mod default 1,561).[3][4]
- Netherite Stick: 16,384 durability (mod default 2,031).[3][4]
These values are set in wooden_stick.durability and the matching durability option for each other stick. Here are the in-pack recipes for the other tiers:[4]

Step 3: Add upgrades
The quest book mentions upgrades such as making the stick use power instead of durability. Each upgrade starts as a template item you craft, and every stick in the pack has upgrading switched on.[2][4][5]
- Battery Template: lets the stick use energy instead of durability.[3][5]
- Unbreakable Template: lets you place blocks without using durability, and the stick never breaks.[3][5]
- Angel Stick Template: places a block on the opposite side of what you are facing, and lets you right click empty space to place in midair with the block in your offhand.[3][5]
- Replacement Stick Template: swaps blocks for the type in your offhand, handy for replacing walls after placing them.[3][5]
- Destruction Stick Template: destroys blocks (not block entities) on the side facing you.[3][5]
Here is the recipe for the battery template:[3]

To apply an upgrade, use a Smithing Table:[5]
- Put your stick, the template and the required item in a Smithing Table.[5]
- Check the Smithing Table recipe for the required item, because it depends on the template.[3][5]
- Take the upgraded stick, then switch between installed upgrades with the bound key while holding it, or use the option screen.[5]

Handy habits from the start
Blocks in your offhand are placed instead of the block you are looking at. Shulker boxes, bundles and many containers from other mods can also supply building blocks for the stick.[5]
How does Construction Sticks work?
7 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Construction Sticks has no machines, pipes or multiblocks to set up. Everything happens in your hand: you aim a stick at the side of a building and it extends that face with more blocks. The depth comes from the restriction modes, the upgrade templates, durability or battery power, and a handful of config limits.[5]
Placing blocks
A stick places blocks on the side of the building that faces you. Press the Toggle Restriction key to cycle the placement restriction: Horizontal, Vertical, North/South, East/West or No lock.[5]
- Horizontal builds a horizontal column in front of the original block, and Vertical builds a vertical column in front of it.[5]
- North/South and East/West build a row in that direction on top of the original block.[5]
- No lock extends from any side of the original block.[5]
The options screen (Open Stick Options key) has more toggles. Direction can place blocks facing you or in the same direction as the target block. Match can be exact (only extend blocks that are exactly the same) or similar (dirt and grass types count as equal). Random places random blocks from your hotbar. Replace lets the stick replace things like fluids, snow and tallgrass.[5]
Similar mode uses a list in the config. In this pack it treats dirt, grass block, coarse dirt, podzol, mycelium, farmland, dirt path and rooted dirt as the same block. That list is misc.SimilarBlocks.[4]
The stick takes building blocks from containers too: shulker boxes, bundles and many containers from other mods can supply them. If you hold blocks in your offhand, the stick places those instead of the block you are looking at.[5]
Undo
Hold the Show Previous key while looking at blocks and your last placed blocks get a green border. Press the Undo Operation key while looking at any of them to undo that operation and get the items back. If you used the destruction upgrade, undo restores the blocks.[5]
The pack keeps the default of 3 undoable operations, set by misc.UndoHistory. Placement range is capped by misc.MaxRange, which is 100 here. The mod describes it as lag prevention, not game balancing, and it affects all sticks.[4][5]
Durability
By default a stick spends durability as it places blocks. This pack raised every tier's durability well above the mod default:[4][5]
- Stickiest Stick: 127 (mod default 59).[4][5]
- Copper Stick: 256 (mod default 131).[4][5]
- Iron Stick: 1,024 (mod default 250).[4][5]
- Diamond Stick: 4,096 (mod default 1,561).[4][5]
- Netherite Stick: 16,384 (mod default 2,031).[4][5]
Upgrades
Upgrades are applied in a Smithing Table: put the upgrade template, your stick and the required item together. The required item is shown in the smithing recipe. Use the Toggle Upgrade key while holding the stick, or the options screen, to switch between installed upgrades. In this pack every tier has its upgradeable option set to true, for example iron_stick.upgradeable, so all sticks accept upgrades.[4][5]
- Angel Stick Template: places a block on the opposite side of the block (or row) you face, and with a block in your offhand you can right click empty space to place in midair. The maximum distance depends on the stick tier.[5]
- Destruction Stick Template: destroys blocks without block entities on the side facing you. The maximum number of blocks depends on the tier, and destroyed blocks vanish, so use undo if you slip.[5]
- Replacement Stick Template: swaps blocks for the type in your offhand, handy for replacing walls after placement.[5]
- Unbreakable Template: lets you place without using durability, so the stick never breaks.[5]
- Battery Template: uses stored energy instead of durability.[5]

The pack's recipe dump has 25 smithing upgrade recipes in total, covering all the sticks and templates.[3]
Per-tier limits
Each tier has its own angel distance and destruction block limit. In this pack they match the mod defaults.[4]
- Stickiest Stick: angel distance 1, destruction limit 1.[4]
- Copper Stick: angel distance 2, destruction limit 3.[4]
- Iron Stick: angel distance 4, destruction limit 9.[4]
- Diamond Stick: angel distance 8, destruction limit 25.[4]
- Netherite Stick: angel distance 16, destruction limit 81.[4]
The config describes 0 as the value that disables the destruction upgrade for a tier, for example with diamond_stick.destruction. The angel distance for a tier is set by options such as diamond_stick.angel.[4]
The angel upgrade can also place blocks below you while you fall more than 10 blocks, which can save you from drops or the void. In this pack that behaviour is turned off by misc.AngelFalling.[4][5]
Battery power
With the battery upgrade the stick stores energy and spends it for each block placed. The usage option for every tier, for example iron_stick.batteryUsage, is 10 in this pack. Storage grows with the tier, and each value is the mod default:[4][5]
- Stickiest Stick: 5,000, set by wooden_stick.batteryStorage.[4]
- Copper Stick: 10,000, set by copper_stick.batteryStorage.[4]
- Iron Stick: 25,000, set by iron_stick.batteryStorage.[4]
- Diamond Stick: 100,000, set by diamond_stick.batteryStorage.[4]
- Netherite Stick: 200,000, set by netherite_stick.batteryStorage.[4]
Block entities
Blocks with block entities (like chests) can be allowed or blocked from stick placement. blockentity.BEWhitelist is false in this pack, so blockentity.BEList acts as a blacklist. It contains chiselsandbits, mekanism and waystones, so blocks from those mods will not be placed by a stick. The list accepts block ids or whole mod ids.[4][5]
How do you progress through Construction Sticks?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
The pack's quest book covers Construction Sticks with a single quest, "Faster Building" (quest a quest in "?"). It sits in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter, in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group, which is chapter 18 of 22 in the book. The quest says that while you hold a Construction Stick you can extend blocks in any direction with one click. It also mentions upgrades you can add to the Sticks, like making one use power instead of durability.[2]
The stick tiers
The pack has these sticks, from the first tier up: the Stickiest Stick (shown in game as Stickiest Stick), the Copper Stick, the Iron Stick, the Diamond Stick and the Netherite Stick. The recipe for each is shown below.[3]

Once you have a template, you apply it to a stick with a smithing upgrade recipe. It takes the stick, the template and one extra item, and gives you back the same stick. Every stick tier has a smithing upgrade recipe for each template, and each template uses its own extra item. Here is the Angel upgrade on an Iron Stick as an example.[3]

Angel Stick Template
- any feather

The other tiers and templates follow the same pattern, each with its own recipe.
A shortcut for the Iron Stick
The pack changes the Wandering Trader. Its script clears the trader's normal offers when it spawns and adds a trade that sells an Iron Stick for 1 Bamboo. That trade can only be used once per trader. If one wanders by, you can skip the crafting for that tier.[6]
How does Construction Sticks work with other mods?
2 parts
Construction Sticks connects to other mods in this pack only through two custom machine recipes. Both were added by the pack, not by the mod, and both use one of the mod's sticks as an ingredient: the Iron Stick and the Diamond Stick.[7]
Iron Stick recipe
The Iron Stick is paired with Amethyst Resonance Charm, an item from the irons_spellbooks namespace. The recipe is a custom machine recipe with the id ftb:world_engine/echo_encoder2.[7]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/echo_encoder2
Diamond Stick recipe
The Diamond Stick is combined with Aerial Pearl from the powah namespace and Machine Frame from the rftoolsbase namespace. The recipe id is ftb:world_engine/rftoolsbuilder_builder, and it is also a custom machine recipe.[7]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/rftoolsbuilder_builder
Unverified The recipe dump does not list what either recipe produces, so the results are unconfirmed. No quests in this pack involve Construction Sticks, so there is no quest-based integration to cover.
Which Construction Sticks config options matter?
7 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Every Construction Stick option lives in one file. The only values that file marks as changed from the mod default are the durability ones, so that is where this pack differs.[4]
Durability: the one thing the pack changed
Every stick tier has a much bigger durability pool in this pack than the mod default. That means your sticks last a lot longer before they break.[4]
- Wooden stick, wooden_stick.durability: 127 (mod default 59).[4]
- Copper stick, copper_stick.durability: 256 (mod default 131).[4]
- Iron stick, iron_stick.durability: 1,024 (mod default 250).[4]
- Diamond stick, diamond_stick.durability: 4,096 (mod default 1,561).[4]
- Netherite stick, netherite_stick.durability: 16,384 (mod default 2,031).[4]
Upgrades
Stick upgrading is switched on for every tier (for example iron_stick.upgradeable). The file describes it as putting the stick together with a stick upgrade in a smithing table.[4]
Destruction block limit
These are the mod defaults, unchanged by the pack. Setting one of them to 0 disables the destruction upgrade for that tier.[4]
- wooden_stick.destruction is 1.[4]
- copper_stick.destruction is 3.[4]
- iron_stick.destruction is 9.[4]
- diamond_stick.destruction is 25.[4]
- netherite_stick.destruction is 81.[4]
Angel placement distance
Also the mod defaults. This is the max placement distance with the angel upgrade, and 0 disables the angel upgrade for that tier.[4]
- wooden_stick.angel is 1.[4]
- copper_stick.angel is 2.[4]
- iron_stick.angel is 4.[4]
- diamond_stick.angel is 8.[4]
- netherite_stick.angel is 16.[4]
Battery storage
Battery storage is unchanged from the mod defaults on every tier.[4]
- wooden_stick.batteryStorage is 5,000.[4]
- copper_stick.batteryStorage is 10,000.[4]
- iron_stick.batteryStorage is 25,000.[4]
- diamond_stick.batteryStorage is 100,000.[4]
- netherite_stick.batteryStorage is 200,000.[4]
Global options
- misc.MaxRange is 100, the mod default. The file says it affects all sticks and is meant for lag prevention, not game balancing. 0 means unlimited.[4]
- misc.UndoHistory is 3, the mod default, so you can undo the last 3 operations.[4]
- misc.AngelFalling is false in this pack. When enabled, it places blocks below you while you fall more than 10 blocks with the angel upgrade, which can save you from drops or the void.[4]
- misc.SimilarBlocks lists blocks treated as equal in Similar mode: dirt, grass block, coarse dirt, podzol, mycelium, farmland, dirt path and rooted dirt.[4]
Block entity filter
blockentity.BEWhitelist is false, so blockentity.BEList works as a blacklist. The list contains chiselsandbits, mekanism and waystones, which means blocks with block entities from those mods can't be placed by a stick. You can also add individual block ids or other mod ids.[4]
