What is Compact Machines?
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Compact Machines is part of the pack's mod list, and this pack ships version 7.0.81 of the NeoForge build. That's the version everything in this guide describes.[1]
The only thing the pack's files tell us about where it fits is a quest. a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" sits in the "useful_items_tips" quest chapter, and its task is to obtain New Machine. So the pack presents the machine as a handy utility item rather than a mandatory progression gate.[2]
Unverified The sources don't describe how the machine works in this pack, who benefits most from it, or exactly when in the progression it becomes worth building. Treat any such claims as unconfirmed until the later sections cover them.
How do you get started with Compact Machines?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Compact Machines lets you build pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on it to step inside. That is the loop you are working toward.[3]
Start with a machine
The machine is the block that opens your pocket room, so it is the first thing to get. The pack's quest book has a quest for it in the useful_items_tips chapter, and its task is to obtain New Machine. You can find it as a quest in "Useful Items & Tips".[2][3]
Get a Personal Shrinking Device
A placed machine does nothing for you until you use a PSD on it. That is how you enter the compact space. The mod also has an advancement for obtaining a Personal Shrinking Device, so it is an early milestone.[3]
Craft Compact Machine Walls
The Compact Machine Wall has its own crafting recipe in this pack, shown here.[4]
The two modules
The pack also has crafting recipes for the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both are shaped recipes, so you can follow the grids below.[4]

How does Compact Machines work?
6 parts
Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to shrink down and step inside. Everything below is what the pack's files actually tell us about how that works.[3][5]
Getting inside a machine
The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD for short) is the key to the whole mod: you use it on a placed machine to enter its compact space. The pack also has a second shrinking device from the shrink mod. It has its own recipe in the pack's scripts, and the mod's shrinking device tag counts it as a shrinking device alongside the Personal Shrinking Device.[3][5][6]
Once you're in, there's a key binding called Quick-Exit Compact Machine so you can get out fast. The pack also has a setting that can damage shrinking devices when you leave rooms.[3]
Two kinds of machine block
The mod has compactmachines:machine and compactmachines:new_machine, and a shared tag lists them together. The first, compactmachines:machine, is a machine bound to a room. When you break it, it drops itself and keeps its custom name, its color and its room code. That's how a machine stays linked to the same room after you pick it up and move it.[7][8][9]
The second, compactmachines:new_machine, works on a room template instead of a room code. When you break it, it keeps its custom name, its color and its room template. The text for templates says they can generate structures when a room is created.[3][10][11][12]
If you look at a bound machine, the game can tell you which room it's tied to and where. There's also a Jade option to show machine owners.[3]
Walls and modules
Compact Machine Wall is the Compact Machine Wall block, and it drops itself when broken. The mod even has an advancement for obtaining a breakable wall block. The wall is crafted from polished deepslate in this pack.[3][13][14]
The pack also has the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. They're crafted from similar parts, with a sticky piston in the shrinking module's recipe and a regular piston in the enlarging module's recipe. The shrinking module is also a part of the pack's own shrinking device recipe.[6][14]

What the room is like
Rooms use their own biome, called Compact Machine. It has no precipitation and a black sky. Its mob lists include animals such as sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses and donkeys, plus bats and glow squid. They also include monsters like spiders, zombies, skeletons, creepers, slimes, endermen and witches. Treat the inside of a machine like any other spawning area and light it up.[16]
Staying in bounds
The mod adds game rules for players who end up outside a room's boundaries. There are separate rules to allow out-of-bounds creative players, spectators and survival players, and another to damage players who are out of bounds. Their values for this pack aren't shown in the sources.[3]
Upgrades and automation
There's a key binding to open the Room Upgrade Screen, and the mod adds a villager called the Spatial Tinkerer. Both show up in the mod's text, but nothing in the sources explains what they do.[3]
Unverified The sources don't explain how machines pass power, fluids or items in and out, so nothing about automation with compact machines is confirmed here. The same goes for room sizes, room upgrades and what the Atom modules do beyond their recipes.
How do you progress through Compact Machines?
3 parts
Compact Machines doesn't have a long tier ladder in this pack. What the pack gives you is one quest, and it comes with an important catch: the machines are Shop Only items.[17]
Where the quest book puts it
The quest a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" sits in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter, which is chapter 18 of 22 in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group and holds 24 quests. The task asks you to have New Machine. The quest text describes Compact Machines as a way to create your own room in a pocket dimension, and suggests them for building farms that might cause FPS drops.[17]
The mod's loot table for the New Machine block makes it drop itself when broken, keeping its custom name, its color and its room template.[10]
Crafted parts
The recipe dump lists Compact Machines items you can craft. The first is Compact Machine Wall, which is made from polished deepslate and gives you 8 walls per craft.[14]
The others are the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both are listed as mod recipes, so the dump shows nothing that the pack changed in them.[14]

The pack's own shrinking device recipe
The pack adds a custom recipe for the Shrinking Device from the Shrink mod, and that recipe uses the Atom Shrinking Module as a component. So crafting the module is a step on the way to that device. The Compact Machines item tag for shrinking devices lists the Shrink mod's device as an optional entry.[5][6]
How does Compact Machines work with other mods?
3 parts
Compact Machines doesn't hook into many other mods in this pack. The clearest links are two recipes the pack adds around the Personal Shrinking Device, plus one quest that mentions the machines.[14][17]
A second Personal Shrinking Device, from the Shrink mod
The pack adds its own crafting recipe for Personal Shrinking Device, a Personal Shrinking Device from the Shrink mod. It is built around the Compact Machines Atom Shrinking Module, and it's a pack addition, not a mod default.[6][14]

Compact Machines knows about this device too. Its own shrinking device item tag lists Personal Shrinking Device and also the Shrink version, which is marked as optional so the tag still loads without that mod.[5]
World Engine recipe
The pack also adds a World Engine recipe, which is a Custom Machinery recipe. It connects the Compact Machines Atom Enlarging Module with Iron Plate from FTB Materials. The exact in-pack recipe is shown below.[14]

In the quest book
In the quest book, a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" sits in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter, in the Forgotten Knowledge group. Its text describes Compact Machines as a way to create your own room in a pocket dimension, and suggests it for farms that might cause FPS drops.[17]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Compact Machines?
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Compact Machines only shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: "useful_items_tips". It's a small appearance, so there's no long questline to follow here.[2]
- a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" is an untitled quest in the "useful_items_tips" chapter. Its task is to obtain New Machine.[2]
Since this is the only Compact Machines quest in the sources, there's no ordering to lay out. The quest doesn't have a title or description in the data I have, so I can't tell you what reward it gives or whether other quests need to be done before it.[2]
Unverified Whether the quest has prerequisites, rewards, or a position relative to other quests in the chapter isn't shown in the sources.
Which Compact Machines config options matter?
2 parts
Compact Machines keeps its config short in this pack. The files here show a common option for recipes and a client option for room previews, and both are switched on.[15][18]
Recipes: vanilla-style
recipes.vanillaRecipes is set to true in this pack. The config describes it as enabling vanilla-style recipes for Compact Machines.[15]
Room previews
enableRoomPreviews is set to true. With it on, you get a room preview when you open the UI of a bound machine.[18]
This option sits in the client config file, so that is where you would look if you want to change the preview behaviour.[18]
