What is Compact Machines?
Compact Machines is part of this pack, and the version you get is 7.0.68 for NeoForge. It has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist and not a recent addition.[1]
The pack's quest book points you at it with the item New Machine. The quest a quest in "?" sits in the "useful_items_tips" chapter and its task is simply to get that item. That chapter placement suggests the pack treats Compact Machines as a handy utility option and not a required step in a main progression chain.[2]
Unverified The sources don't describe what the machine does in this pack, what it costs to craft, how its settings are configured, or at what stage of progression you're meant to pick it up. There's no in-jar guidebook to confirm any of this either. Check the quest in-game before planning around it.
Unverified No source places Compact Machines on the ATM Star quest path, so you shouldn't expect it to be part of that route.
How do you get started with Compact Machines?
4 parts
Compact Machines lets you build pocket dimensions. The basic loop is simple: craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device to step inside. Here's the order I'd tackle things in this pack.[3]
Craft Compact Machine Walls first
Start with the Compact Machine Wall. Every machine recipe in this pack uses it, so make it first. This is the mod's own recipe, which the pack leaves as it is.[4]
Make both atom modules
Next come the Atom Enlarging Module and the Atom Shrinking Module. Every machine recipe in this pack needs both. These are the mod's own recipes, unchanged by the pack.[4]

Craft your first machine
Now you can craft the New Machine. The pack adds its own machine recipes, with ids ending in tiny, normal, large, colossal and farming. Each one combines the wall and both modules with one extra item that changes from recipe to recipe, so check the recipe blocks below. The sources here don't say which room size each recipe produces, so I won't guess beyond the recipe names.[4]

There's also a quest in the useful_items_tips chapter that asks you to obtain the machine item, so check your quest book once you've crafted one: a quest in "?".[2]
Go inside
Place the machine in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on it to enter the compact space. You'll find the same steps in the JEI descriptions for machines and for the shrinking device.[3]
How does Compact Machines work?
4 parts
Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, and then use a Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on it to step inside. The room you enter is bound to that machine.[3]
Entering a machine
The PSD is the key to everything. Using it on a placed machine takes you into the compact space. Hover over a bound machine and its tooltip tells you which room it is bound to: the room size and its position. Hold shift on the tooltip for more details.[3]
When you open a bound machine's UI, the pack shows a room preview. That comes from the client option enableRoomPreviews, which is set to true here.[5]
Room templates
Some room templates come with structures. Their tooltip says they generate structures when the room is created.[3]
Staying inside the room
The mod has game rules for players who end up out of bounds. Separate rules cover creative players, spectators and survival players, and another rule damages players who are out of bounds. A further rule damages shrinking devices when you leave rooms, so keep an eye on your PSD.[3]
The sources don't show which of these rules are on or off in the pack, so check the values in your own world before relying on them.[3]
Crafting the pieces
The pack sets recipes.vanillaRecipes to true, which enables vanilla-style recipes. Machines are built from Compact Machine Wall blocks plus the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. All of these use the mod's own recipes.[4][6]

The machine itself, New Machine, is where the pack makes changes. It has its own added recipes, named tiny, normal, large, colossal and farming. Each one is a separate crafting recipe for the same item.[4]

How do you progress through Compact Machines?
3 parts
Compact Machines progression in this pack is short. The quest book has a single quest that points you at the machine, and the pack adds its own recipes that all produce New Machine, with the extra ingredient deciding which tier you get.[2][4]
The quest
The only quest tied to the mod in the sources is a quest in "?", in the useful_items_tips chapter. It has no title, and its task is to obtain New Machine. The quest does not say which tier it wants, so pick a tier from the recipes below.[2]
Parts every machine needs
Every machine recipe in the pack uses Atom Enlarging Module, Atom Shrinking Module and Compact Machine Wall. These parts use the mod's own recipes and are not marked as added by the pack, so craft them first.[4]

The machine tiers
The pack adds shaped recipes for New Machine with the ids tiny, normal, large, colossal and farming. Each one combines the parts above with one extra item, and that extra item decides the variant. Because the pack added these recipes, don't assume they match the mod's defaults.[4]

How does Compact Machines work with other mods?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.8.1 guide
Compact Machines links to the rest of the pack in a few places. The sources show a crafting recipe for the Personal Shrinking Device, a machine recipe that uses Compact Machines modules, and a quest that asks for the Compact Machines machine item.[7][8]
Personal Shrinking Device
The pack adds its own crafting recipe for the Personal Shrinking Device, and it uses the Atom Shrinking Module from Compact Machines. Because the pack added it, you won't find it in the mods' defaults.[7]

Recipe id: ftb:crafting/shrinking_device

World Engine recipe
The pack also adds a custom machine recipe in the World Engine group. Its id mentions the personal shrinking device, and it uses both the Atom Enlarging Module and the Atom Shrinking Module alongside an Iron Plate. The recipe dump lists no output for it.[7]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/personal_shrinking_device

Quest
The quest chapter "useful_items_tips" has a quest, a quest in "?", whose task is to obtain the New Machine. The quest has no title in the pack files.[8]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Compact Machines?
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Compact Machines only shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: "useful_items_tips". It's a small appearance, so there's no long questline to follow here.[9]
- a quest in "?" is an untitled quest in the "useful_items_tips" chapter. Its task is to obtain New Machine.[9]
Since this is the only Compact Machines quest in the sources, there's no ordering to lay out. The quest doesn't have a title or description in the data I have, so I can't tell you what reward it gives or whether other quests need to be done before it.[9]
Unverified Whether the quest has prerequisites, rewards, or a position relative to other quests in the chapter isn't shown in the sources.
Which Compact Machines config options matter?
2 parts
The sources here show one option in the common config and one in the client config for Compact Machines. Neither is shown as changed from the mod default, so treat both as the values this pack ships with.[5][6]
Vanilla-style recipes
recipes.vanillaRecipes is set to true in this pack. The config describes it as enabling vanilla-style recipes.[6]
Room previews
enableRoomPreviews is set to true in this pack. It is a client-side option that enables a room preview when you open a bound machine UI.[5]
