What is Compact Machines?

Compact Machines is part of the pack's mod list, and this pack ships version 7.0.81 of the NeoForge build. That's the version everything in this guide describes.[1]

The only thing the pack's files tell us about where it fits is a quest. a quest in "Useful Items & Tips" sits in the "useful_items_tips" quest chapter, and its task is to obtain New Machine. So the pack presents the machine as a handy utility item rather than a mandatory progression gate.[2]

Tip: If you want a nudge to try the mod, check the "useful_items_tips" chapter in your quest book. The quest there is built around the machine item.[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe how the machine works in this pack, who benefits most from it, or exactly when in the progression it becomes worth building. Treat any such claims as unconfirmed until the later sections cover them.

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

4 parts

Compact Machines lets you build pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on it to step inside. That is the loop you are working toward.[3]

Start with a machine

The machine is the block that opens your pocket room, so it is the first thing to get. The pack's quest book has a quest for it in the useful_items_tips chapter, and its task is to obtain New Machine. You can find it as a quest in "Useful Items & Tips".[2][3]

Get a Personal Shrinking Device

A placed machine does nothing for you until you use a PSD on it. That is how you enter the compact space. The mod also has an advancement for obtaining a Personal Shrinking Device, so it is an early milestone.[3]

Craft Compact Machine Walls

The Compact Machine Wall has its own crafting recipe in this pack, shown here.[4]

Crafting Shaped

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

The two modules

The pack also has crafting recipes for the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both are shaped recipes, so you can follow the grids below.[4]

Watch out: The mod has a gamerule that damages shrinking devices when you leave rooms, and others that deal with players who are out of bounds. Keep that in mind before you count on a PSD lasting through many trips.[3]

How does Compact Machines work?

3 parts

Compact Machines is about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, and then step inside it. The sources for this pack explain the entry flow and a few rules about the rooms, but not much beyond that.[3]

Getting inside a machine

  1. Craft a machine and place it in the world.[3]
  2. Use a Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on the placed machine to enter the compact space.[3]

Each machine is bound to a room. The mod has a message that tells you a machine at a given position is bound to a room of a certain size at a certain position. Some room templates also generate structures when the room is created, and a tooltip tells you so.[3]

In this pack, opening a bound machine's UI shows a room preview, because enableRoomPreviews is set to true.[5]

Room boundaries and the shrinking device

The mod has game rules that control what happens to players who end up outside a room's bounds. There are separate rules for allowing out-of-bounds survival, creative and spectator players, plus one that damages players who are out of bounds.[3]

There is also a game rule that damages shrinking devices when you leave a room. The sources only give the descriptions of these rules. They don't show the default values or whether the pack changes them, so check them in your world before you rely on them.[3]

Crafting

The pack has recipes.vanillaRecipes set to true, which enables the vanilla-style recipes. Here are the in-pack recipes for the Compact Machine Wall, the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module.[4][6]

Crafting Shaped

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

The mod also has an advancement for obtaining a breakable wall block, which is a handy first step toward building your own machines.[3]

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

2 parts

The sources for this pack don't lay out a tier ladder for Compact Machines, such as machine sizes or an upgrade order, so I won't invent one. What they do confirm is a quest and a handful of crafting recipes, which is what this section covers.[2][4]

Where the quest book puts it

The pack's Compact Machines quest, a quest in "Useful Items & Tips", sits in the "useful_items_tips" chapter. It has no title, and its task is to obtain New Machine. So the quest book treats the machine as a handy utility item, not as a step in a long questline.[2]

Recipes you can craft

The recipe dump lists shaped crafting recipes for the Compact Machine Wall, the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Here is the wall first.[4]

The shrinking module and the enlarging module are laid out almost identically. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack difference between them.[4]

How does Compact Machines work with other mods?

3 parts

Compact Machines only has a small number of links to other mods in this pack. The recipe dump shows a couple of recipes that mix its items with another mod's, and the quest book has one entry for a Compact Machines item. Here's what the sources confirm.[2][4]

Crafting the Personal Shrinking Device

The pack adds its own shaped crafting recipe for the Personal Shrinking Device. It builds on the Atom Shrinking Module from Compact Machines and pairs it with ingots from the common ingot tags. Because the pack added this recipe, treat it as the pack's own and not as a Compact Machines default.[4]

This shaped recipe is added by the pack and uses a Compact Machines module.

World Engine recipe

The pack also adds a Custom Machinery recipe with the id ftb:world_engine/personal_shrinking_device. It uses the Atom Enlarging Module, the Atom Shrinking Module and the Personal Shrinking Device together with an Iron Plate, so it ties Compact Machines items to the pack's own materials.[4]

The recipe dump lists no output for this one.

Quest book

The "useful_items_tips" quest chapter has an untitled quest, a quest in "Useful Items & Tips", with an item task for New Machine. That is the quest book's only entry for Compact Machines in the sources here, and it does not involve any other mod's items.[2]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Compact Machines?

Compact Machines only shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: "useful_items_tips". It's a small appearance, so there's no long questline to follow here.[2]

Since this is the only Compact Machines quest in the sources, there's no ordering to lay out. The quest doesn't have a title or description in the data I have, so I can't tell you what reward it gives or whether other quests need to be done before it.[2]

Unverified Whether the quest has prerequisites, rewards, or a position relative to other quests in the chapter isn't shown in the sources.

Which Compact Machines config options matter?

2 parts

Compact Machines keeps its config short in this pack. The options you are most likely to run into are one in the common config and one in the client config, and both are listed below with the values the pack uses.[5][6]

Recipes

Client display

  • enableRoomPreviews is set to true in this pack. It enables the room preview when you open a bound machine UI.[5]
Tip: The recipes option lives in compactmachines-common.toml and the room preview option lives in compactmachines-client.toml, so check the matching file if you want to look at either one.[5][6]
