What is Sophisticated Storage?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Sophisticated Storage is part of the pack at version 1.5.91. It adds a whole family of storage items, and the pack gives you a dedicated quest chapter so you can work through them step by step.[1][2]

The chapter starts with the Basic Tier Upgrade quest (a quest in "?"). Every other quest in the chapter unlocks after it, so it's your entry point.[2]

How the quest chapter is laid out

Right after that first quest, the chapter splits into several branches:[2]

The upgrade quests

Once you have the Upgrade Base quest done, five more quests open up. Each one accepts any item from its group:[2]

Unverified Where Sophisticated Storage fits in the wider progression is not confirmed. The quest chapter only shows the order above, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path. Detailed behavior of individual upgrades and any pack-specific recipe changes are not covered by the sources yet.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?

5 parts

Welcome to Sophisticated Storage in this pack! The quest book gives you a clear path through the mod, and it all starts with one item: the Basic Tier Upgrade. Here is the order the quests follow and why each step matters.[4]

Step 1: the Basic Tier Upgrade

The first quest in the storage chapter, a quest in "?", asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade. The other quests in the chapter come after it. Its tooltip says it upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version, so this is how you turn ordinary storage into the mod's storage. The pack changed this recipe, so check the exact version here:[4][5][6]

Step 2: pick your next branch

Finishing that first quest opens five branches at once: tier upgrades, limited barrels, packing tape, the upgrade base, and the controller tools. You can do them in any order. This is the order I'd go in.[4]

  1. Make a limited barrel (a quest in "?"). The quest accepts any of the four versions, from Limited Barrel 1 to Limited Barrel 4. The tooltip describes them by slot count and a base stack size multiplier.[4][5]
  2. Grab Packing Tape (a quest in "?"). It also appears in the useful items tips chapter (a quest in "?"). Its tooltip has a "Disabled" line that appears when the config is set to drop all storages as packed.[4][5][7]
  3. Work on tier upgrades (a quest in "?"). The quest accepts the iron, gold, diamond or netherite version, such as Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade.[4]
  4. Set up the controller tools (a quest in "?"). This quest wants the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[4]

The pack changed the limited barrel recipes, and each wood type has its own set of four. Here is one example, the acacia version of Limited Barrel I:[6]

Tier upgrades

The pack changed the tier upgrade recipes. The iron one is crafted directly, and the gold, diamond and netherite versions each build on the tier before. There is also a copper-to-iron route.[6]

The controller

The Storage Controller lets you deposit and pipe items to and from a connected multiblock of storages. If you have separate multiblocks, the Storage Link connects them to the controller. Use the Storage Tool to link them.[4][5]

Step 3: the Upgrade Base and storage upgrades

The Upgrade Base quest (a quest in "?") is the gate to the storage upgrades. Five more quests unlock after it:[4]

Here is the pack's recipe for the hopper upgrade. Its tooltip says it pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below.[5][6]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?

8 parts

Sophisticated Storage is mostly about how you connect storage blocks together, and how upgrades inside each storage automate the work. Here is how the parts fit together, using only what the pack's files confirm.[5][6]

Storage multiblocks

Storage blocks can be joined into a multiblock. The controller is the hub: it lets you deposit items into the connected storages and pipe items to and from them. The storage connector bridges gaps between storage blocks in the multiblock, so you can keep the group together even when the blocks don't touch. The pack has connector variants such as Acacia Storage Connector and Bamboo Storage Connector.[5][6]

If you have a separate multiblock elsewhere, a storage link connects it to a controller. You use the Storage Tool on the link to attach it to the controller. The Storage Tool also locks storages and hides counts, tiers and locks.[5]

Input, Output and I/O blocks

These blocks decide how pipes and hoppers talk to the multiblock. Storage Input only lets you pipe items in, and its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact. Storage Output only lets you pipe items out. Storage I/O does both.[5]

You don't need to craft each one from scratch. In the pack, they are swapped by crafting one into the next: Input becomes Output, Output becomes I/O, and I/O becomes Input. All of these recipes are changed by the pack.[6]

Limited barrels

Limited Barrel 1 through Limited Barrel 4 are barrels with a restricted slot count and a stack size multiplier. Their tooltips show both values for the exact item you hold, but the sources here don't give the numbers for each tier, so check the tooltip in game.[5]

Tiers and stack upgrades

The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version. Tier upgrades are then chained in this pack: the iron upgrade is made from the copper one, gold from iron, and diamond from gold.[5][6]

The Basic to Gold and Basic to Diamond upgrades follow the same pattern, each built from the previous tier's upgrade.

Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in each slot. The mod's tooltips describe these steps:[5]

  • Stack upgrade tiers 1, 1 Plus, 2, 3, 4 and 5 multiply the stacks per slot by 2, 3, 4, 8, 16 and 32.[5]
  • The omega tier multiplies stacks per slot by the maximum value (×33,554,431).[5]
  • Stack downgrade tiers 1, 2 and 3 divide the stacks per slot by 8, 16 and 32.[5]

Item automation upgrades

The Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade is faster and has input and output options. The pack keeps the mod defaults for its settings:[5][8]

The Filter Upgrade filters what gets piped in and/or out of the storage, and the Advanced version gives you more filtering options. In the pack, server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots is 16.[5][8]

The Magnet and Pickup upgrades pull items in from the world. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade collects within a range set by server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange, which is 5 blocks around the storage, and its server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.filterSlots is 16.[5][8]

The Void Upgrade deletes the items you select in its filter. In this pack server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true, so the void upgrade can void anything and isn't limited to the overflow option.[5][8]

Smelting upgrades

The auto smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades cook inside an upgrade tab and automatically pull and push items. Auto-smelting Upgrade smelts, Auto-blasting Upgrade blasts ores and metal items, and Auto-smoking Upgrade smokes food.[5]

In this pack, the blasting and smoking versions are crafted from the auto-smelting upgrade, so start there.[6]

The pack leaves the smelting settings at the mod defaults, where 1.0 means vanilla furnace rates:[8]

Fluids, experience and potions

The Pump Upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump Upgrade also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids get pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[5]

The Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. Its server.alchemyUpgrade.filterSlots is 4 in the pack.[5][8]

The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade adds extra effect filtering options, and its server.advancedAlchemyUpgrade.filterSlots is 8.[5][8]

Breaking storages and packing tape

In this pack common.dropPacked is false, so chests and barrels are not always dropped packed with their contents when you break them. You need packing tape for that. If that option were set to true, the tape tooltips say the tapes would show as disabled because all storages already drop as packed.[5][9]

Tip: Missing some wood variants or tinted tier items in JEI? Check the client options. In the pack, client.showHigherTierTintedVariants is true and client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly is false, so JEI shows every wood variant and the tinted higher tiers.[10]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

Sophisticated Storage progression in the pack runs through the general_storage quest chapter. Everything starts at quest a quest in "?", which asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade. Five more quests unlock right after it, so you can pick your own order from there.[4]

Box tiers

Quest a quest in "?" accepts any one of the Iron, Gold, Diamond or Netherite tier upgrades: Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade or Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade. The pack changed all of these recipes. The Gold, Diamond and Netherite upgrades each build on the one below, so you climb Iron, Gold, Diamond, then Netherite.[4][6]

Once you have the Upgrade Base, five quests open up, each accepting several upgrades from the same family.[4]

The pack changed the recipes for these upgrades too. The advanced versions (void, hopper, pickup and magnet) are made from the matching basic upgrade, so build the basic one first. You can also go to the Advanced Magnet Upgrade straight from the basic Magnet Upgrade without crafting the advanced pickup upgrade.[6]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

In this pack, Sophisticated Storage connects to two other mods through crafting recipes: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. The recipe dump marks every one of these recipes as changed by the pack, so use the in-pack recipes shown below rather than the mod's defaults.[11]

Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades both ways

You can convert upgrades between your storage blocks and your backpacks with a shaped crafting recipe, so you don't have to rebuild an upgrade from scratch. A storage upgrade plus a couple of extra materials gives you the matching backpack upgrade. This covers the Void, Magnet, Pickup, Feeding, Jukebox, Crafting, Stonecutter and Smelting upgrades, plus their advanced versions where those exist.[11]

The reverse direction exists too: backpack upgrades can be crafted back into storage upgrades, and that recipe uses a different extra material from the one going the other way.[11]

Watch out: Stack upgrades do not line up one to one. Storage Stack Upgrade Tier 2 converts into backpack Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Tier 3 into Tier 2, Tier 4 into Tier 3 and Tier 5 into Tier 4. Storage Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes the backpack Stack Upgrade Starter Tier. Omega converts to Omega, and Stack Downgrade Tiers 1 to 3 convert straight across.[11]

Chipped: workbench upgrades

Chipped adds a storage upgrade for each of its workbenches. The pack has a recipe that combines the matching Chipped block with an Upgrade Base and a couple of other materials. The upgrades are:[11]

Each Chipped upgrade also has a conversion recipe to its Sophisticated Backpacks twin, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade, so you can move them between storage and backpacks as well.[11]

Quests

The quest tasks shown for this mod in the pack ask for Sophisticated Storage items such as the tier upgrades, Upgrade Base and Packing Tape.[2][3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Sophisticated Storage shows up in two quest chapters in the pack. Nearly all of it is in the general_storage chapter, and every quest there is an item-collection task. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so you'll find them by their IDs.[2][3]

general_storage: the starting point

Everything in the chapter starts from a quest in "?". It asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade plus a second item task. That second task is cut off in the data I have, so I can't say what it is.[2]

Unverified The second item task of quest 3ACF3359B3B59A05 is incomplete in the available quest data, so what it asks for is unconfirmed.

Quests unlocked by the first quest

Five quests unlock once the first one is done. Here is what each asks for:[2]

The upgrade branch

After the Upgrade Base quest, four more quests open up. In each one, any of the listed items counts.[2]

Tip: The Upgrade Base quest gates all the upgrade-type quests, so make the base early. The tier upgrade, limited barrel, packing tape and storage tool quests only need the first quest done.[2]

useful_items_tips

The useful_items_tips chapter has one more quest for this mod, a quest in "?". It asks for the Packing Tape again, the same item as in general_storage. No prerequisite is listed for it.[3]

Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?

5 parts

Good news first: in this pack's server config, every value that lists a mod default matches that default. Nothing there has been retuned, so what you see in the mod's usual numbers is what you get. The options below are the ones you're most likely to run into.[8]

Breaking chests and barrels

common.dropPacked is set to false in this pack. When it's true, chests and barrels always drop packed with their contents when broken, with no packing tape needed.[9]

server.tooManyItemEntityDrops is 200. If breaking a chest or barrel would drop more item entities than that, the break is canceled unless you hold shift, and a message explains the packing tape option.[8]

Slots per tier

Chests, barrels and shulker boxes share the same slot counts per tier. Each tier is set by its own inventory and upgrade slot options, for example server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount and server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount. In this pack:[8]

  • Wood: 27 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot. The plain shulker box is also 27 and 1.[8]
  • Copper: 45 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot.[8]
  • Iron: 54 inventory slots, 2 upgrade slots.[8]
  • Gold: 81 inventory slots, 3 upgrade slots.[8]
  • Diamond: 108 inventory slots, 4 upgrade slots.[8]
  • Netherite: 132 inventory slots, 5 upgrade slots.[8]

Upgrade limits

server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many upgrades of a type one storage can hold. For barrels, chests and shulker boxes, you can fit 1 furnace upgrade, 1 jukebox upgrade and 2 stack upgrades. Limited barrels get 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[8]

server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems lists items that won't stack further even with a stack upgrade. In this pack that's the bundle and every colour of shulker box, including the undyed one.[8]

Upgrade behaviour

Display options

These client options only affect what JEI and the creative tab show. client.showHigherTierTintedVariants is true, so tinted variants of iron and higher tiers appear. client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly is false, so every wood variant is listed.[10]
