What is Sophisticated Storage?
2 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Sophisticated Storage is part of the pack at version 1.5.91. It adds a whole family of storage items, and the pack gives you a dedicated quest chapter so you can work through them step by step.[1][2]
The chapter starts with the Basic Tier Upgrade quest (a quest in "?"). Every other quest in the chapter unlocks after it, so it's your entry point.[2]
How the quest chapter is laid out
Right after that first quest, the chapter splits into several branches:[2]
- Tier upgrades: a quest in "?" accepts any of Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade or Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[2]
- Limited barrels: a quest in "?" accepts any of Limited Barrel 1, Limited Barrel 2, Limited Barrel 3 or Limited Barrel 4.[2]
- Packing Tape has its own quest, a quest in "?". It also shows up in the useful items and tips chapter as a quest in "?".[2][3]
- Network tools: a quest in "?" asks for the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
- Upgrades: a quest in "?" asks for the Upgrade Base and unlocks the upgrade quests below.[2]
The upgrade quests
Once you have the Upgrade Base quest done, five more quests open up. Each one accepts any item from its group:[2]
- Void: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Stack: any of the Stack Upgrade tiers, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5, including Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus (a quest in "?").[2]
- Crafting, stonecutting and smelting: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Smelting Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Hopper: Hopper Upgrade or Advanced Hopper Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Pickup and magnet: Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
Unverified Where Sophisticated Storage fits in the wider progression is not confirmed. The quest chapter only shows the order above, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path. Detailed behavior of individual upgrades and any pack-specific recipe changes are not covered by the sources yet.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
6 parts
Sophisticated Storage has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it works as a handy roadmap. Follow it in order and you unlock the mod's main features one at a time.[4]
First: the Basic Tier Upgrade
The chapter begins with the Basic Tier Upgrade in quest a quest in "?". Every other quest in the chapter comes after it. It upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version, so it's how you turn ordinary storage into the mod's storage.[4][5]

Next: a Limited Barrel
Quest a quest in "?" asks for any of the Limited Barrels, from Limited Barrel 1 up to Limited Barrel 4. A limited barrel has a set number of slots and a base stack size multiplier. The pack has recipes per wood type, and oak is shown here as an example.[4][5][6]

Then: move up the tiers
Quest a quest in "?" accepts any one of the iron, gold, diamond or netherite upgrades. Start with the Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade. The higher upgrades chain from it: gold builds on iron, diamond on gold, and netherite on diamond. There is also a Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade that can be turned into the iron upgrade.[4][6]

Connect your storage
Quest a quest in "?" asks for three items together: the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link. The Storage Controller lets you deposit and pipe items to and from a connected multiblock of storages. The Storage Link connects a separate multiblock to the controller, and you use the Storage Tool to link it.[4][5]

The Upgrade Base and your first upgrades
Quest a quest in "?" asks for the Upgrade Base. Several more quests come after it, covering these upgrade groups:[4]
- Void upgrades: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade (a quest in "?").[4]
- Stack upgrades, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 through Stack Upgrade Tier 5 (a quest in "?").[4]
- Crafting, stonecutter and smelting upgrades (a quest in "?"). The Crafting Upgrade puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab.[4][5]
- Hopper upgrades (a quest in "?"). The Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below.[4][5]
- Pickup and magnet upgrades (a quest in "?"). The Pickup Upgrade makes storage pick up items, and the Magnet Upgrade magnets items into storage at range.[4][5]

The advanced versions are upgrades of the basic ones. For example, the Advanced Hopper Upgrade is made from the Hopper Upgrade, and it is faster and has input and output options.[5][6]
Packing Tape
The chapter also asks for Packing Tape in quest a quest in "?". The same item appears in a tips quest, a quest in "?", in the useful items chapter.[4][7]
How does Sophisticated Storage work?
6 parts
Sophisticated Storage is more than chests and barrels. Wood storage can be linked into a multiblock, piped with automation, and loaded with upgrades that smelt, filter, pump fluids and more. Here is what the pack's files tell us about how it works.[5]
Storage multiblocks and piping
The Controller lets you deposit items into a connected multiblock of storages, and pipe items to and from it. If you have separate storages that aren't part of the same multiblock, the Storage Link connects them to a controller. You link them with the Storage Tool.[5]
To get items in and out of a storage inside a multiblock with pipes, you have three blocks. Storage Input only lets you pipe items in, and its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact. Storage Output only lets you pipe items out. Storage I/O does both.[5][6]
You don't need to craft a new one when you change your mind. In this pack the three blocks convert into each other in a loop, one shapeless craft at a time.[6]

Storage Input to Storage Output.
Storage Output to Storage I/O.
Storage tiers and capacity
The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version. The copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite tier upgrades are the next steps up. In this pack the gold, diamond and netherite upgrades are each crafted from the previous tier's upgrade, and iron can also be made from the copper one.[5][6]

Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in a slot. The tooltips list multipliers of 2, 3, 4, 8, 16 and 32 across the tiers. The omega tier raises the stack size limit to 2,147,483,647. Stack downgrades go the other way and divide by 8, 16 or 32.[5]
Limited barrels trade slots for capacity: their tooltip shows a slot count and a base stack size multiplier.[5]
Breaking storage and keeping your items
common.dropPacked is false in this pack. So chests and barrels are not always dropped as packed with their contents when broken. The packing tape tooltip says the tape is disabled when this option is set to drop everything packed, so with the option off the tape is the way to carry a full storage.[5][8]
Item automation upgrades
The Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The advanced version is faster and adds input and output options. The pack keeps the mod defaults for it: server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks is 2 ticks between transfers, server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize is 4, and there are 4 input and 4 output filter slots.[5][9]
The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of storage. The advanced version has more filtering options and 16 filter slots in the pack (server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots).[5][9]
The Magnet Upgrade pulls items into storage from range, and the advanced version reaches further. In this pack server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange is 5 blocks, the same as the mod default. The Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick up items too.[5][9]
The Void Upgrade voids the items you select in its filter. server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true in this pack. That setting decides whether the void upgrade can void anything or only has the overflow option.[5][9]
Processing inside the storage
The auto-smelting, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade upgrades smelt, blast or smoke inside an upgrade tab and automatically pull and push items. Each has 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots in the pack, and the fuel efficiency multiplier is 1, which equals vanilla furnace fuel use. The smelting and blasting speed multipliers are also 1, which equals vanilla furnace speed. These match the mod defaults, so the pack hasn't changed them.[5][6][9]
You can craft the blasting and smoking versions straight from the Auto-smelting Upgrade in this pack.[6]

Fluids and experience
Fluid handling goes through the Tank upgrade. The Pump Upgrade moves fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it can filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage progression in this pack is guided by the "general_storage" quest chapter. It starts with one entry quest and then splits into branches, so you can go for tiers, upgrades or utility items in whatever order suits your base.[4]
Where the quests start
The chapter opens with a quest in "?", which asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade (the quest lists a second task, but the source cuts off before naming it). Four quests unlock right after it: a quest in "?" (tier upgrades), a quest in "?" (limited barrels), a quest in "?" (packing tape) and a quest in "?" (the upgrade base).[4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
2 parts
The recipes in this pack connect Sophisticated Storage with two other mods through crafting: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. Both links are about upgrades, so they matter most if you carry a backpack and also run storage blocks.[6]
Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades between backpacks and storage
You don't have to rebuild an upgrade from scratch when you move it between a backpack and a storage block. The pack has conversion recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into its Sophisticated Backpacks twin, for example the Magnet Upgrade into the Magnet Upgrade.[6]

Storage upgrade to backpack upgrade.
These storage-to-backpack recipes cover a wide range: basic upgrades such as Void Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade and Smelting Upgrade, their Advanced versions, and the stack downgrades.[6]
The stack upgrades are numbered differently on each side. The Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus converts into the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, and storage Tier 2, 3, 4 and 5 convert into backpack Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4. The Stack Upgrade Omega Tier converts into the Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[6]
Going the other way works too. The pack has backpack-to-storage recipes for the Advanced upgrades (Compacting, Feeding, Filter, Jukebox, Magnet, Pickup, Void and Alchemy), for the Alchemy Upgrade, the blasting upgrades, the auto-smelting and auto-smoking upgrades, and four of the Chipped upgrades.[6]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Sophisticated Storage shows up in two quest chapters in the pack. Nearly all of it is in the general_storage chapter, and every quest there is an item-collection task. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so you'll find them by their IDs.[2][3]
general_storage: the starting point
Everything in the chapter starts from a quest in "?". It asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade plus a second item task. That second task is cut off in the data I have, so I can't say what it is.[2]
Unverified The second item task of quest 3ACF3359B3B59A05 is incomplete in the available quest data, so what it asks for is unconfirmed.
Quests unlocked by the first quest
Five quests unlock once the first one is done. Here is what each asks for:[2]
- a quest in "?" wants any one tier upgrade: Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade or Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "?" wants any limited barrel, from Limited Barrel 1 up to Limited Barrel 4.[2]
- a quest in "?" wants the Packing Tape.[2]
- a quest in "?" has three item tasks: the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
- a quest in "?" wants the Upgrade Base. This one opens the upgrade branch below.[2]
The upgrade branch
After the Upgrade Base quest, four more quests open up. In each one, any of the listed items counts.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "?": any stack upgrade, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 and Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus through Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and Stack Upgrade Tier 4 to Stack Upgrade Tier 5.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Smelting Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Hopper Upgrade or Advanced Hopper Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
useful_items_tips
The useful_items_tips chapter has one more quest for this mod, a quest in "?". It asks for the Packing Tape again, the same item as in general_storage. No prerequisite is listed for it.[3]
Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.12.0 guide
Good news first: in this pack's server config, every value that lists a mod default matches that default. Nothing there has been retuned, so what you see in the mod's usual numbers is what you get. The options below are the ones you're most likely to run into.[10]
Breaking chests and barrels
common.dropPacked is set to false in this pack. When it's true, chests and barrels always drop packed with their contents when broken, with no packing tape needed.[11]
server.tooManyItemEntityDrops is 200. If breaking a chest or barrel would drop more item entities than that, the break is canceled unless you hold shift, and a message explains the packing tape option.[10]
Slots per tier
Chests, barrels and shulker boxes share the same slot counts per tier. Each tier is set by its own inventory and upgrade slot options, for example server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount and server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount. In this pack:[10]
- Wood: 27 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot. The plain shulker box is also 27 and 1.[10]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot.[10]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots, 2 upgrade slots.[10]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots, 3 upgrade slots.[10]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots, 4 upgrade slots.[10]
- Netherite: 132 inventory slots, 5 upgrade slots.[10]
Upgrade limits
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many upgrades of a type one storage can hold. For barrels, chests and shulker boxes, you can fit 1 furnace upgrade, 1 jukebox upgrade and 2 stack upgrades. Limited barrels get 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[10]
server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems lists items that won't stack further even with a stack upgrade. In this pack that's the bundle and every colour of shulker box, including the undyed one.[10]
Upgrade behaviour
- Hopper upgrade: server.hopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks is 8 ticks and server.hopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize is 1.[10]
- Advanced hopper upgrade: server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks is 2 ticks and server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize is 4, so it moves items faster and in bigger chunks.[10]
- Magnet upgrade: server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange is 3 blocks, and server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange is 5.[10]
- Furnace-style upgrades (smelting, smoking, blasting and their auto versions) use a speed multiplier and a fuel efficiency multiplier of 1, which matches a vanilla furnace. For example, see server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier and server.smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier.[10]
- Void upgrades: server.voidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled and server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled are true, so voiding anything is allowed rather than overflow only.[10]
- XP pump: server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true, and server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending is 5.[10]
- Controller: server.controllerRange is 15 blocks.[10]
Display options
These client options only affect what JEI and the creative tab show. client.showHigherTierTintedVariants is true, so tinted variants of iron and higher tiers appear. client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly is false, so every wood variant is listed.[12]
