What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
1 part
This pack includes Sophisticated Backpacks version 3.25.78. The mod adds the Backpack, higher tiers of it, and a set of upgrade items, and the pack's quest book walks you through them.[1][2]
The tiers that the quests accept are the Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and Netherite Backpack.[2]
Where the quest book places it
The mod appears in two chapters. In the chapter "the_beginning", "Backpacks" quest asks you to obtain a Backpack. It comes after another quest in that chapter.[3]
The main home is the chapter "general_storage". It opens with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, another Backpack task, which has no quest before it. Two quests follow it directly:[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest asks for the Upgrade Base.[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest accepts any of the copper, iron, gold, diamond or netherite backpacks.[2]
Five more quests come after the Upgrade Base quest:[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest accepts any stack upgrade, from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier up to Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest accepts the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest accepts the Void Upgrade or the Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- "Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest accepts a pickup or magnet upgrade, either basic or advanced.[2]
- "Inception Upgrade" quest asks for the Inception Upgrade.[2]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here. That would be told in the pack's quest book, and the sources here do not show it.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
2 parts
Welcome to the backpacks! Everything here starts with one item, so your first job is simple: make a Backpack. The pack uses its own recipe for it, shown below. Both the early quest chapter and the storage quest chapter ask you to get one, so you'll tick off a quest right away ("Backpacks" quest and "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest).[2][3][4]

What to make, in order
- Craft the Backpack. Every other quest in the storage chapter comes after it.[2]
- Craft an Upgrade Base. The quest for it comes straight after the backpack quest ("Upgrade Base" quest), and many of the pack's upgrade recipes use it as a building block.[2][4]
- Pick the upgrades you actually want. The upgrade quests all come after the Upgrade Base quest, so you can choose your own order.[2]

Where to go from there
The quest book splits the next steps into a few branches. Here's what each one covers and where to start.[2]
- Bigger backpacks: a quest right after the backpack one covers the tiered backpacks ("Tier Upgrades" quest). In this pack each tier is an upgrade of the one before it, from Copper and Iron up through Gold and Diamond to Netherite. Start with the Copper Backpack or Iron Backpack.[2][4]
- Stack upgrades: the quest ("Stack Upgrades" quest) runs from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier up to Stack Upgrade Omega Tier. Each higher tier is crafted from the one below it.[2][4]
- Workstations: the Crafting Upgrade puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab, and the Anvil Upgrade does the same for an anvil. The Stonecutter Upgrade is in the same quest ("Useful Upgrades" quest).[2][5]
- Collecting loot: the Pickup Upgrade and Magnet Upgrade are in one quest ("Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest) along with their advanced versions. The advanced versions add more filtering options, and the advanced magnet pulls items in from a greater range.[2][5]
- Getting rid of junk: the Void Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade share a quest ("Void Upgrades" quest). The advanced one voids the items you select in its filter.[2][5]
- The Inception Upgrade has its own quest ("Inception Upgrade" quest), which also comes after the Upgrade Base quest.[2]
If you already have matching Sophisticated Storage upgrades, the pack also has recipes that convert them into their backpack versions. That covers the pickup, magnet, void, crafting, stonecutter and stack upgrades, among others.[4]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
7 parts
A Sophisticated Backpack is a portable inventory, and nearly everything interesting it does comes from upgrades that sit in upgrade tabs. Each upgrade adds one behavior: a workstation, a smelter, an automation helper, a fluid tank and so on. Here is how those systems fit together in this pack, as far as the sources explain them.[5]
Workstations in an upgrade tab
Several upgrades put a vanilla block's interface into a tab, so you can use it without placing the block. The Crafting Upgrade gives you a crafting table in an upgrade tab, the Anvil Upgrade gives you an anvil, and the stonecutter, smithing and sawmill upgrades work the same way. Each Chipped station also has its own upgrade, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[4][5]
The pack has changed the recipes for these upgrades, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. The crafting, anvil and Chipped upgrades are all built around an Upgrade Base. Check the recipe in-game before you plan a build.[4]

Smelting, blasting and smoking
There are two kinds of furnace upgrade. The Smelting Upgrade and Blasting Upgrade give you a furnace-style interface in a tab, and a smoking version exists too. The Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade also pull items in and push results out automatically.[4][5]
The auto versions have filters for what goes in and what counts as fuel, plus speed and efficiency multipliers. The pack leaves all of these at the mod defaults. Here are the auto-smelting values:[6]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlots is 8.[6]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlots is 4.[6]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier is 1, which equals the speed of a vanilla furnace.[6]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier is 1, which equals the fuel use of a vanilla furnace.[6]
- The auto-blasting upgrade has its own matching keys, for example server.autoBlastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, which is also 1.[6]
You can move between the furnace types without starting from scratch. The pack has recipes that turn an Auto-smelting Upgrade into an Auto-blasting or Auto-smoking one.[4]

Item handling and automation
The Filter Upgrade filters items that are piped into or out of the backpack, which is how you control hoppers and pipes touching it. The advanced version adds more filtering options. Its filter slot count is set by server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots, which is 16 here, and the number shown per row is server.advancedFilterUpgrade.slotsInRow, which is 4.[5][6]
- The Deposit Upgrade moves items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click. The restock upgrade works the other way and refills the backpack from that inventory.[4][5]
- The Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the backpack. The Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets.[4][5]
- The Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only 2x2 recipes. The advanced version also handles 3x3 recipes.[4][5]
- The pickup and magnet upgrades pull items into the backpack. The advanced magnet's range is 5 blocks around the storage in this pack, set by server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange.[5][6]
- The void upgrade voids items selected in its filter. In this pack server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled is true, so the advanced void upgrade can void at any time and isn't limited to overflow.[5][6]
- The refill upgrade keeps a stack of selected items topped up in your inventory. The tool swapper automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that's effective on the block or entity you left-click.[5]
Fluids, energy and experience
The tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage, and the battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. The pump upgrade moves fluids between the tank and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it can filter which fluids are pumped. The XP pump moves experience between the tank and the player.[5]
Capacity upgrades
Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot: 1.5 for the starter tier, then 2, 4, 8 and 16 for tiers 1 to 4. The omega tier multiplies by the maximum value, 33,554,431. Stack downgrades go the other way, dividing by 8, 16 or 32 depending on tier.[5]
Protection and special upgrades
The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, and it can't despawn or fall into the void. The pack changed its recipe.[4][5]

The inception upgrade lets you put backpacks inside a backpack. The infinity upgrades make all items in the backpack infinite. The admin-only one limits who can set infinite items and break or pick up the backpack, while the survival version lets all players do it.[5]
Pack-specific settings
The pack changes several server settings, so don't assume the mod defaults.[6]
- server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 1 here, down from the mod default of 3. It is the number of backpacks you can carry before getting slowness, so carry only one.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance, the chance of a mob spawning with a backpack, is 0.05 instead of 0.01.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance, the chance of such a mob dropping its backpack when a player kills it, is 0.05 instead of 0.5.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel is 0 instead of 0.15, so Looting does not raise the drop chance.[6]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true. Another player can open your worn backpack by right-clicking your back, unless you turn that off in the backpack's settings.[5][6]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
6 parts
Progression with Sophisticated Backpacks in this pack has two parts: upgrading the backpack itself through its material tiers, then filling it with upgrades. The quest book follows that order. It lives in the general_storage chapter, and the first quest there is just to get a Backpack. The Beginning chapter also has a quest that asks for the same item.[2][3]
The recipe dump marks every recipe below as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The recipe blocks show the exact in-pack versions.[4]

Both "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest (general_storage) and "Backpacks" quest (The Beginning) ask for this item.
The general_storage quest "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest is the root of the chapter. Every other quest in it sits somewhere below it.[2]
Step 2: Backpack tiers
The tier ladder runs Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, then Netherite. Gold, Diamond and Netherite are each crafted from the backpack one step below. Iron has a shortcut: you can make it straight from the plain Backpack, or from the Copper Backpack.[4]
- Copper Backpack: made from the plain Backpack.[4]
- Iron Backpack: made from the plain Backpack or from the Copper Backpack.[4]
- Gold Backpack: made from the Iron Backpack.[4]
- Diamond Backpack: made from the Gold Backpack.[4]
- Netherite Backpack: made from the Diamond Backpack.[4]

- Stack upgrades ("Stack Upgrades" quest): the Starter Tier, Tier 1 to Tier 4, or the Omega Tier, for example Stack Upgrade Starter Tier and Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2]
- Crafting, stonecutter and anvil upgrades ("Useful Upgrades" quest): Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade.[2]
- Void upgrades ("Void Upgrades" quest): Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- Pickup and magnet upgrades ("Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest): Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
- Inception ("Inception Upgrade" quest): Inception Upgrade.[2]
The stack upgrade ladder
Stack upgrades follow the same pattern as the backpack tiers: Starter, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4, then Omega. Tier 1 can be crafted from the Upgrade Base or from the Starter Tier. Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4 each need the tier below, and Omega is made from Tier 4.[4]

Converting Sophisticated Storage upgrades
The pack also has recipes that turn Sophisticated Storage versions of several upgrades into their backpack equivalents. These cover the stack upgrades, crafting, stonecutter, void, pickup and magnet upgrades, and the advanced versions. If you already have storage upgrades lying around, you can convert them instead of crafting from scratch.[4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, the links between Sophisticated Backpacks and other mods come from crafting recipes. They cover two mods: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. The pack's quests in the chapters I checked only list Sophisticated Backpacks items, so they don't tie it to any other mod.[2][3][4]
In the quest book, the general_storage chapter starts with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest for the Backpack. The Upgrade Base quest "Upgrade Base" quest comes after it, and the upgrade quests follow from there.[2]
Chipped workbench upgrades
There is one backpack upgrade for each Chipped workbench, so you can use those tables straight from your backpack. The pack changed all seven recipes. The upgrades are Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade.[4]
Each one is crafted around the matching Chipped table, such as the Glassblower or the Mason Table. Here are the exact in-pack recipes:[4]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
Sophisticated Storage upgrades can be converted into Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades with their own recipes, and the pack changed these too. If you already have a storage upgrade, you can turn it into the backpack version instead of starting from scratch. This covers the basic and advanced upgrades, such as the Magnet, Pickup, Void, Feeding, Filter, Jukebox, Alchemy, Compacting and Crafting upgrades. It also covers the smelting-type upgrades and the Chipped upgrades.[4]

Stack upgrades use different names
The stack upgrades don't line up one-to-one by name, so check this list before you convert anything. The storage upgrade becomes the backpack upgrade beside it:[4]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes Stack Upgrade Starter Tier.[4]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 2 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 1.[4]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 3 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 2.[4]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 4 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 3.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: a single early quest in "the_beginning" and a full chain in "general_storage". Every quest here is an item-collection task, and none of them have titles in the quest files, so they're identified below by their IDs.[2][3]
The Beginning
Quest "Backpacks" quest asks you to get a Backpack. It unlocks after another quest in that same chapter is done, so you'll meet it as part of the early progression.[3]
General Storage
This chapter is the main backpack path. You start with the basic backpack and an Upgrade Base, then pick which upgrades you want to chase. Here's the order:[2]
- Quest "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest is the starting point and asks for a Backpack.[2]
- Quest "Upgrade Base" quest unlocks after the first one and asks for an Upgrade Base. This is the gate to all the upgrade quests.[2]
- Quest "Tier Upgrades" quest also unlocks after the first quest. It accepts one of the higher-tier backpacks: Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack or Netherite Backpack.[2]
Upgrade quests
Once the Upgrade Base quest is done, five upgrade quests open up. They all depend on that same quest, so you can do them in any order:[2]
- Quest "Stack Upgrades" quest is for stack upgrades. It accepts Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3, Stack Upgrade Tier 4 or Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2]
- Quest "Useful Upgrades" quest is for utility upgrades: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade.[2]
- Quest "Void Upgrades" quest is for voiding items: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- Quest "Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest is for collecting items: Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
- Quest "Inception Upgrade" quest asks for the Inception Upgrade.[2]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
3 parts
Everything here lives in the server config file for the mod. Most of it is untouched mod defaults, but the pack changed four values, and they all affect how you get and carry backpacks. I'll cover those first.[6]
What the pack changed
- server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 1 in the pack (mod default 3). It sets how many backpacks you can carry in your inventory before you get slowed down, so carry just one.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance is 0.05 (mod default 0.01). This is the chance a mob spawns wearing a backpack, so you'll see backpack-wearing mobs more often than the mod default would give you.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance is 0.05 (mod default 0.5). This is the chance a mob drops its backpack when a player kills it, so it is much lower than the default.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel is 0 (mod default 0.15). Looting does not raise the backpack drop chance in this pack.[6]
The slowness itself comes from server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness, which is true. server.nerfs.slownessLevelsPerAdditionalBackpack is 1, the same as the mod default.[6]
Backpack sizes (mod defaults)
The pack does not change any backpack sizes. Inventory slots and upgrade slots by tier are:[6]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[6]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[6]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[6]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots.[6]
Other options worth knowing
- server.maxUpgradesPerStorage limits each backpack to 1 of each: furnace-type upgrades, stack upgrades and the jukebox upgrade.[6]
- server.disallowedItems blocks Personal Barrel and Personal Chest from being put inside backpacks.[6]
- server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange is 3 blocks for the normal magnet. server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange is 5 blocks for the advanced one.[6]
- server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow gives the tank upgrade 4,000 mB per row of storage slots.[6]
- server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false, so active upgrades like magnet and pickup are not limited to the backpack you're wearing.[6]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true, so on a server players can right-click a backpack another player is wearing to open it.[6]
- server.itemFluidHandlerEnabled is false. The config notes this prevents dupe bugs when a backpack is filled or drained as an item in another mod's tank.[6]
- The mob catcher upgrade has hard limits on slot cost: 18 for the basic one (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.basicMaxSlotCost) and 72 for the advanced one (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.advancedMaxSlotCost). server.mobCatcherUpgrade.hostileMultiplier is 2, so hostile mobs cost double.[6]
