What is Mekanism Lasers?

2 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on for Mekanism, and it can't run without it. The mod's description says it adds laser doors and security systems, and lets you upgrade lasers from basic to ultimate tiers.[1]

It's not just a security mod either. The author says you can use it to build an infinite ore generator.[1]

The laser tiers

Lasers run from Basic Laser through Advanced Laser and Elite Laser up to Ultimate Laser. Each tier also has a toggleable version, such as Basic Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser.[1][2]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack ships version 1.1.10.2 of the mod, and it has been included since pack version 1.0.1 or earlier.[3]

In the quest book, the mod shows up in the "mekanism" chapter. Quest a quest in "?" asks you to get an Ore Generator and a laser, and any laser or toggleable laser variant counts for the laser task. It comes after quest a quest in "?".[2]

It also appears in the "resources_and_you" chapter. There, quest a quest in "?" only asks for the Ore Generator, and it comes after quest a quest in "?".[4]

Tip: The mod's author recommends installing both Jade and JEI for the best experience.[1]
Watch out: The author says the mod is still under development and that a lot of things have yet to be added. It's usable, but expect it to change over time.[1]

Unverified No in-jar guidebook was found for this mod, so how the ore generator works, which ores it produces and what the lasers need in order to run are not confirmed here.

How do you get started with Mekanism Lasers?

6 parts

Mekanism Lasers builds on Mekanism and cannot run without it. The mod adds lasers you can upgrade from basic to ultimate tiers, plus extras like a laser stopper and an ore generator. Here is the order I'd go in.[1]

Start with the Basic Laser

Everything starts with the Basic Laser. The ore generator recipe uses it, and each higher laser tier is crafted from the tier below, so this is the entry point for the whole mod.[5]

Build the Ore Generator

The Ore Generator is the headline machine. Its in-game description says it uses light to convert energy to ores. The pack's quest book asks for it too: a quest in "?" in the resources_and_you chapter asks for the ore generator alone, and a quest in "?" in the mekanism chapter asks for the ore generator plus any laser, basic or toggleable, of any tier.[2][4][6]

How does Mekanism Lasers work?

5 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on that cannot run without Mekanism. It builds on Mekanism's laser with upgradable lasers, laser-based security, and a way to turn light into ore. The sources only explain these systems briefly, so this section covers what is confirmed and flags the rest.[1]

Laser tiers and toggleable lasers

Lasers can be upgraded from basic up to ultimate tier. That gives you the Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser and Ultimate Laser. Each tier above basic is crafted from the one below it.[1][5]

Every tier also has a toggleable version that can be switched on and off: the Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser. The plain versions have no switch.[5][6]

The Elite and Ultimate toggleable lasers each have a second recipe that the pack has changed. The other toggleable recipes are the mod's own.[5]

The pack changes this machine through two config options. [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is the generator's cooldown in seconds. The pack sets it to 1, where the mod default is 4.[7]

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is the energy cost of fabricating ore. The pack sets it to 50,000, far below the mod default of 16,000,000.[7]

Tip: That config file has 2 more options that are set in the same file. Open it in your own instance to see them.[7]

Laser Splitter

The Laser Splitter is part of the mod, and you can craft it with the recipe below. The sources give no description of how it behaves.[5]

Unverified The sources do not cover several mechanics: laser range or damage per tier, the energy output of the Energy Transformer, how the Ore Generator chooses which ores it makes, how the Laser Splitter divides beams, and any pipe, item or fluid automation support. Treat these as unconfirmed until tested in the pack.

How do you progress through Mekanism Lasers?

4 parts

Lasers in this pack come in four tiers: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser and Ultimate Laser. Each tier is a straight upgrade chain. The Advanced recipe takes a Basic Laser as an input, Elite takes an Advanced Laser, and Ultimate takes an Elite Laser. You build up one tier at a time.[5]

Tier by tier

The Basic Laser is your entry point. It is built from a regular Mekanism laser, so you need that mod's laser first.[5]

Toggleable versions

Every tier also has a toggleable version: Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser. What the quests ask for

The pack's Mekanism chapter has a quest, a quest in "?", that asks you to get the Ore Generator plus any one laser. Any tier counts, normal or toggleable, so the Basic Laser is enough to complete it.[2]

The Ore Generator is also the target of a quest in "?" in the resources_and_you chapter. Its recipe uses a Basic Laser, so that is the first laser to build.[4][5]

Those are the only quests in the sources that involve this mod, and neither asks for anything above a Basic Laser. Going to Advanced, Elite and Ultimate is optional as far as the quests go.[2][4]

Other craftable blocks

The pack also has recipes for Energy Transformer, Interface Block, Laser Splitter, Laser Stopper and Remote Control. They sit outside the tier chain, and no quest in the sources asks for them.[2][4][5]

Unverified The sources don't say what each tier does differently in practice, such as power or output differences, or what these extra blocks do, so those details are not covered here.

How does Mekanism Lasers work with other mods?

3 parts

Mekanism Lasers is an add-on, and it can't run without Mekanism. In this pack, every connection to another mod goes through Mekanism, and that shows up in both the recipes and the quests.[1][2][5]

Recipes that use Mekanism items

Every Mekanism Lasers recipe I could check in this pack pulls in Mekanism parts. That covers the Basic Laser, the Interface Block, the Laser Stopper, the Laser Splitter, the Ore Generator and the toggleable laser upgrades. Many also take common-tag items like circuits, redstone dust, iron, gold, steel, diamond or cheap glass, so any matching item from any mod works for those slots.[5]

The Ore Generator is the clearest crossover. Its recipe builds directly on a Mekanism machine and on one of this mod's own lasers, so you need to progress through both mods to get it.[5]

Pack-changed toggleable laser recipes

The pack changed two of the toggleable laser upgrade recipes: the Elite Toggleable Laser and the Ultimate Toggleable Laser. These are the pack's versions, not the mod's defaults. Both are upgrades of the previous tier's toggleable laser, and they take Mekanism alloys and control circuits.[5]

Quests

Quest a quest in "?" sits in the Mekanism chapter. It asks you to get the Ore Generator and any one of the laser items, basic through ultimate, toggleable or not.[2]

Quest a quest in "?" is in the Resources and You chapter and asks for the Ore Generator. The pack treats it as one of its resource-gathering options.[4]

Unverified The mod author recommends Mekanism Turrets & Fences for extra base protection, and Jade and JEI for the best experience. None of the pack recipes or quests I checked use these, so I can't confirm any integration in this pack. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Mekanism Lasers?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Mekanism Lasers shows up in the quest book in the "mekanism" and "resources_and_you" chapters. Neither quest has a title in the quest data, and both ask you to have the Ore Generator.[8][9]

Chapter "mekanism"

Quest a quest in "?" has item tasks for the Ore Generator and for a laser. For the laser task, any of the tiers is accepted: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser. The toggleable versions count too: Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser.[8]

You don't need a specific tier, so whichever laser you have ready satisfies that task. This quest comes after another quest in the same chapter, so finish that one first.[8]

Chapter "resources_and_you"

Quest a quest in "?" is simpler. Its only task is an item task for the Ore Generator. It also comes after an earlier quest in its chapter, which you need to complete first.[9]

Tip: Both quests ask for the Ore Generator, so you can hand in the same machine type for each of them.[8][9]

Which Mekanism Lasers config options matter?

3 parts

Mekanism Lasers has a small config file, and its infinite ore generator is where the pack's tweaks matter. Everything lives in config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml. The pack changed two of the values from the mod's defaults, and both make the ore generator much friendlier.[1][7]

Values the pack changed

  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is set to 1 in this pack. The mod default is 4. It is the ore generator's cooldown in seconds, so the generator cycles faster than it would in a plain install.[7]
  • [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is set to 50,000 in this pack. The mod default is 16,000,000. This is the energy cost of fabricating ore, and the pack cuts it dramatically. The allowed range is 0 to 2,147,483,647.[7]
Tip: Because the pack lowers the fabrication cost from 16,000,000 to 50,000, you don't need a huge power setup to get an ore generator running. Guides written for the mod's defaults will overstate the energy you need.[7]

Values left at the default

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorNumberOfOres]] controls how many ores you get from one cycle. The pack keeps it at 1, the same as the mod default.[7]

Unverified The config file lists the range for the number-of-ores option as above 1, even though the value is 1. How the option behaves if you raise it has not been confirmed, so test it yourself before relying on it.

The ore blacklist

[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.blacklistedOres]] is a list of ores that the generator is not allowed to produce. The pack's list is long and covers ores from many mods. It includes Mekanism's Osmium Ore, Tin Ore and Uranium Ore, vanilla ores such as Deepslate Iron Ore and Deepslate Diamond Ore, and Uranium Ore. It also covers many ftbmaterials variants, such as the end and nether versions of tin, zinc and silver.[7]

If an ore you expected from the generator never shows up, check this list first. The file does not say whether the pack changed this list from the mod's default, so treat the list as the pack's setup and don't assume it matches a plain install.[7]

What changed in Mekanism Lasers between versions?

FTB Skies 2 1.3.1 ships Mekanism Lasers 1.1.10.2. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so you have had it from the start of the pack's releases covered here.[3]

The one change the mod's changelog lists for 1.1.10.2 is the addition of the Energy Transformator, which converts lasers to usable energy.[10]

I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't tell you about any other changes between pack releases.[3]
