What is Create: Sound of Steam?
2 parts
Create: Sound of Steam is a Create addon that adds pipe organs to Minecraft. It gives you a range of organ pipe stops, so you can build music setups that go well beyond note blocks.[1]
It's for players who like Create and want to build something musical, or just want a fun decorative project. The mod is not required for progression, so you can pick it up whenever you like.[1]
What's in the mod
The project page lists these pipe types, with more promised for later:[1]
- Gedackt, Diapason, Gamba and Piccolo[1]
- Subbass, Trompette, Nasard and Posaune[1]
- Vox Humana, Viola, Vox Celeste and English Horn[1]
- Rohrflote, Hohlflute, Prestant and the Haunted Steam Whistle[1]
Version in this pack
The pack includes version 0.8.2+1.21.1 of the mod, shipped as the file pipeorgans-0.8.2+1.21.1.jar.[2]
Unverified The sources I have don't show any quests, ATM Star path steps or in-jar guidebook for this mod in this pack. I also can't confirm any pack-specific recipe or config changes, so treat the mod's progression placement as unverified.
How do you get started with Create: Sound of Steam?
4 parts
Create: Sound of Steam is a Create addon that adds pipe organ stops to Minecraft. It is an early beta release, so expect some rough edges. The order below follows the in-pack recipes: start with the shared building block, then pipes, then the parts that sit around them.[1]
Make a Pipe Base
The Pipe Base comes first because most pipe recipes in this pack use it as an ingredient. The mod also has an advancement for crafting or obtaining one.[3][4]

Craft a few simple pipes
Once you have Pipe Bases, you can start on the simple pipes, such as the Nasard and the Gamba. The Diapason, Gedeckt and Hohlflute each have an advancement for placing them, so they make good early goals.[3][4]

A stonecutter converts the Diapason into a Prestant and back again, so you only need to craft one of them.[3]

Move on to reed pipes
The Trompette, Posaune, English Horn and Vox Humana are built with Create's sequenced assembly. Each needs a Pipe Base, a boot, a Brass Reed and a Tuning Wire. The mod's advancement describes this as deploying a boot, a Brass Reed and a Tuning Wire onto a Pipe Base.[3][4]
The pack adds its own recipes for the Brass Reed and the Tuning Wire, so use these ones.[3]

Each reed pipe uses a different boot. The Trompette uses the Brass Boot, the Posaune the Dark Oak Boot, the English Horn the Iron Boot, and the Vox Humana the Copper Boot. Here is the Trompette as an example.[3]
Build the organ hardware
Pipes need hardware around them. The pack has recipes for the Windchest, the Windchest Controller, the Keyboard Relay and the Tracker Bar. The Roll Authoring Table has a GUI listing available MIDI files.[3][4]

How does Create: Sound of Steam work?
7 parts
Create: Sound of Steam adds pipe organ stops to Minecraft, and it is an early beta release, so expect some rough edges. The sources I have cover how pipes are built and the MIDI upload settings. They say very little about how the Windchest, Windchest Controller, Keyboard Relay and Tracker Bar behave once placed, so I only cover what is confirmed.[1]
Everything starts with the Pipe Base
Almost every pipe in the pack is built from a Pipe Base. It is a normal crafting recipe built around a Create fluid pipe.[3]
Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: pipeorgans:crafting/base
The Diapason, Gamba, Gedeckt, Hohlflute, Nasard, Piccolo, Rohrflote, Subbass, Viola and Vox Celeste are all crafted at a crafting table, starting from a Pipe Base. Each one has its own recipe, and the Gedeckt is shown below as an example.[3]
The Prestant and the Diapason can be turned into each other in a stonecutter, so you can swap between them without crafting from scratch.[3]

Reed pipes
Reed pipes work differently. They are assembled by deploying parts onto a Pipe Base rather than crafted in a grid. In this pack the English Horn, Posaune, Trompette and Vox Humana are made with Create sequenced assembly. Each pipe uses its own boot and its own incomplete intermediate item.[3][4]
- English Horn uses the Iron Boot.[3]
- Posaune uses the Dark Oak Boot.[3]
- Trompette uses the Brass Boot.[3]
- Vox Humana uses the Copper Boot.[3]
The other reed pipes follow the same pattern with their own boot.
The boots themselves are plain crafting recipes: the Iron, Brass and Copper boots use plates, and the Dark Oak Boot uses dark oak planks.[3]

Pack changes to reed parts
The pack adds its own recipes for the reed-pipe parts. The Brass Reed is made by pressing a brass nugget with Create. The Tuning Wire is crafted from a copper nugget. Both recipes are added by the pack, so check the recipes below rather than relying on the mod's own.[3]

Haunted Whistle
The Haunted Whistle comes from Create's haunting process, applied to a Steam Whistle.[3]
Organ control blocks
The mod has several non-pipe blocks, each with a crafting recipe in the pack: Windchest, Windchest Controller (the Windchest Controller), Keyboard Relay, Tracker Bar and Roll Authoring Table (the Roll Authoring Table).[3]

Unverified How the Windchest, Windchest Controller, Keyboard Relay and Tracker Bar connect to pipes, and what steam or fluid they need, is not covered by the available sources, since no in-jar guidebook was found. Test it in-world before building a large organ.
MIDI upload limits
The Roll Authoring Table has a screen that lists your available MIDI files. Uploads are limited by the server config, and this pack leaves every one of these values at the mod default.[4][5]
- maxMidiFiles is 16, with an allowed range of 1 to 128. It is the number of MIDI files a player can upload before older ones are overwritten.[5]
- midiFileSizeLimit is 256 kilobytes, with a range of 64 to 1,024. It is the largest MIDI file you can upload.[5]
- maxMidiPacketSize is 1,024 bytes, with a range of 256 to 32,767. Uploaded files are split into packets of at most this size.[5]
- midiIdleTimeout is 600 ticks, with a range of 100 to 1,200. If no new packets arrive for this long, an active upload is discarded.[5]
Goggle display options
The client config controls what goggles show. displayMutationSoundingPitch is true in this pack, so mutation pipes display their sounding pitch while you wear goggles. showOctaveBrackets is false, so octave values in goggle tooltips are not shown in parentheses.[6]
How do you progress through Create: Sound of Steam?
4 parts
Progression for this mod comes straight from its in-pack recipes, which build on Create's own items. Here is the order I'd go in, grouped by what each recipe asks of you.[3]
Unverified The sources here do not show any quest for this mod in the pack's quest book, so there is no quest-driven order. The tiers below follow the in-pack recipes only.
The foundation
Everything starts with the Pipe Base. It is crafted from Create's Fluid Pipe plus a copper ingot, so you need basic Create plumbing before you make any organ pipe.[3]
Crafting Shaped
| any copper ingot |

The Windchest and Windchest Controller use planks, a spruce slab and redstone. The Windchest also takes a Fluid Pipe, while the Windchest Controller takes a zinc ingot instead.[3]

Flue pipes
Once you have a Pipe Base, a whole family of pipes is one crafting step away: Nasard, Diapason, Gamba, Rohrflote, Gedeckt, Hohlflute, Subbass and Piccolo. Here is the Nasard as an example.[3]
Viola and Vox Celeste each ask for a Create metal block next to the Pipe Base: industrial iron for the Viola and weathered iron for the Vox Celeste.[3]

Reed pipes
The reed pipes are Vox Humana, Trompette, English Horn and Posaune. They are made with Create's sequenced assembly, and each one has its own boot item: Copper Boot, Brass Boot, Iron Boot and Dark Oak Boot. Each of these recipes also uses a Pipe Base, a Brass Reed and a Tuning Wire. The recipes are below.[3]

How does Create: Sound of Steam work with other mods?
3 parts
Sound of Steam is a Create addon, and in this pack that shows clearly in the recipes. Most of its key parts are crafted from Create components, so you'll want to be comfortable with Create before you build an organ. The pack also adds its own recipes for the Brass Reed and the Tuning Wire.[1][3]
Pack-added recipes
The pack added its own recipes for the Brass Reed and the Tuning Wire. The Brass Reed is made with Create's pressing process, using a Brass Nugget. The Tuning Wire is a shaped crafting recipe added through KubeJS, using a Copper Nugget. These are pack changes, not the mod's own recipes.[3]
Added by the pack, made with Create pressing.

Core parts built from Create items
The Pipe Base and the Windchest both use the Create Fluid Pipe in their crafting recipes. These are the mod's own recipes, so the pack didn't change them.[3]

The Haunted Whistle isn't crafted at a table. It comes from Create's haunting process applied to a Steam Whistle.[3]
Which Create: Sound of Steam config options matter?
2 parts
Good news: there isn't much you need to fiddle with here. The pack's config for the pipe organs is small, and every server-side value is left at the mod default. The options are split between a client file, which affects what you see, and a server file, which controls MIDI uploads.[5][6]
Server: MIDI uploads
These options live in the server file and limit how players upload MIDI files to play on the organs. In this pack, none of them has been changed from the mod default.[5]
- maxMidiFiles is 16, the same as the mod default. It is how many MIDI files a player can upload before the previous ones are overwritten. The allowed range is 1 to 128.[5]
- midiFileSizeLimit is 256 KiloBytes, the same as the mod default. It is the maximum file size of an uploaded MIDI file. The allowed range is 64 to 1,024.[5]
- maxMidiPacketSize is 1,024 Bytes, the same as the mod default. Uploaded MIDI files are split into packets of up to this size. The allowed range is 256 to 32,767.[5]
- midiIdleTimeout is 600 game ticks, the same as the mod default. If no new packets arrive for this long, an active MIDI upload is discarded. The allowed range is 100 to 1,200.[5]
Client: goggle tooltips
Two client options change what you see in goggle tooltips. The sources don't list mod defaults for these, so I can't say whether the pack changed them. These are the values the pack uses.[6]
- displayMutationSoundingPitch is true, so mutation pipes show their sounding pitch while you wear goggles.[6]
- showOctaveBrackets is false, so octave values in goggle tooltips are not shown in parentheses. Set it to true if you want the brackets.[6]
What changed in Create: Sound of Steam between versions?
3 parts
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Create: Sound of Steam 0.8.2+1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier. The history below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]
0.8.2: MIDI and new pipes
This is the version you have in the pack, and it is a big one. It brings MIDI compatibility to your organs.[2][7]
- The Keyboard Relay lets you connect a physical piano keyboard to your computer and play your organ.[7]
- The Tracker Bar is a new way to play MIDI files using paper rolls.[7]
- The Roll Authoring Table lets you punch paper rolls with music on them.[7]
- New pipes: Viola, Vox Celeste, Rohrflote, Hohlflute, Prestant, English Horn and Haunted Whistle.[7]
Some existing things changed too:[7]
- Reed pipes (Trompette, Subbass, Vox Humana, English Horn) are now crafted via sequenced assembly, using new reed and tuning wire items.[7]
- The tooltip on a pipe while you wear Engineer's Goggles now shows the octave as well as the pitch.[7]
- The Gedeckt is now visually stopped.[7]
- Subbass and Posaune now have the full 5-octave range.[7]
- Pipe extensions no longer flood the logs with errors on startup.[7]
0.6.4: crash fix
This release fixed a crash when placing pipes or loading a world with pipes placed, caused by a rendering error.[8]
0.6.3: translations and fixes
- Added translations for Czech, Dutch, French, German, Polish, Russian and Spanish.[9]
- Updated to Create 6.0.6, and gave the windchest and windchest master a new particle texture.[9]
- Fixed a crash when placing the base block.[9]
- Fixed blocks not dropping when mined or picked up with a wrench.[9]
- Fixed the windchest powered state not updating when rotated with a wrench.[9]
