What is Create: Sound of Steam?
3 parts
Create: Sound of Steam is a Create addon that adds pipe organs to the game. It gives you lots of different pipe organ stops, which widens what you can do with music technology in Minecraft.[1]
What you get
The mod's project page lists these pipes: Gedackt, Diapason, Gamba, Piccolo, Subbass, Trompette, Nasard, Posaune, Vox Humana, Viola, Vox Celeste, English Horn, Rohrflote, Hohlflute, Prestant and the Haunted Steam Whistle. The author says more are on the way.[1]
Version in this pack
This pack ships Create: Sound of Steam 0.8.2+1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 1.0.1 or earlier.[2]
Quest book and ATM Star
Unverified The sources here do not show where the pack's quest book places this mod, so no chapter, group or neighbouring quests can be given. They also do not show whether the ATM Star path uses it. Check the quest book in game for that.
How do you get started with Create: Sound of Steam?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Create: Sound of Steam is a Create addon that adds pipe organ stops to Minecraft. It is an early beta release, so expect some rough edges. The order below follows the in-pack recipes: start with the shared building block, then pipes, then the parts that sit around them.[1]
Make a Pipe Base
The Pipe Base comes first because most pipe recipes in this pack use it as an ingredient. The mod also has an advancement for crafting or obtaining one.[3][4]

Craft a few simple pipes
Once you have Pipe Bases, you can start on the simple pipes, such as the Nasard and the Gamba. The Diapason, Gedeckt and Hohlflute each have an advancement for placing them, so they make good early goals.[3][4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: pipeorgans:crafting/gedeckt
A stonecutter converts the Diapason into a Prestant and back again, so you only need to craft one of them.[3]

Move on to reed pipes
The Trompette, Posaune, English Horn and Vox Humana are built with Create's sequenced assembly. Each needs a Pipe Base, a boot, a Brass Reed and a Tuning Wire. The mod's advancement describes this as deploying a boot, a Brass Reed and a Tuning Wire onto a Pipe Base.[3][4]
The pack adds its own recipes for the Brass Reed and the Tuning Wire, so use these ones.[3]

Each reed pipe uses a different boot. The Trompette uses the Brass Boot, the Posaune the Dark Oak Boot, the English Horn the Iron Boot, and the Vox Humana the Copper Boot. Here is the Trompette as an example.[3]
Build the organ hardware
Pipes need hardware around them. The pack has recipes for the Windchest, the Windchest Controller, the Keyboard Relay and the Tracker Bar. The Roll Authoring Table has a GUI listing available MIDI files.[3][4]

How does Create: Sound of Steam work?
5 parts
Create: Sound of Steam adds pipe organ stops to Minecraft. The mod describes itself as an early beta, so expect rough edges.[1]
Pipes and extensions
Every pipe has a matching extension block, for example Diapason and Diapason Extension. Pipe blocks drop themselves when broken, so a placed Diapason gives you the Diapason item back.[4][5]
Extension blocks drop nothing. The loot tables for the Diapason, English Horn, Gamba, Gedeckt, Haunted Whistle, Hohlflute, Nasard and Piccolo extensions all give air.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
It is the same for the Posaune, Prestant, Rohrflote, Subbass, Trompette, Viola, Vox Celeste and Vox Humana extensions: their loot tables give air too.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]
Everything starts with the Pipe Base. Its loot table drops the block itself, and it is the starting ingredient of the pipe recipes in this pack.[22][23]

Gedeckt, Hohlflute, Piccolo, Subbass, Gamba, Nasard, Viola, Vox Celeste and Diapason each have a normal crafting recipe in the mod. The pack has not changed them. Here are most of them:[23]

Reed pipes
Reed pipes are assembled by deploying a boot, a Brass Reed and a Tuning Wire onto a Pipe Base. Boots come in four types: Copper Boot, Brass Boot, Iron Boot and Dark Oak Boot.[4][23]
The Trompette, Posaune and English Horn have Create sequenced assembly recipes, shown below. The Incomplete Trompette, Incomplete Posaune and Incomplete English Horn items are the in-progress items of those recipes.[4][23]
Sequenced Assembly (create)
Recipe id: pipeorgans:sequenced_assembly/english_horn
The pack adds its own recipes for the two small parts these need. Brass Reed is made by pressing, and Tuning Wire comes from a shaped recipe that makes 6 at a time.[23]

Recipe id: ftb:pipeorgans/tuning_wire
Haunted Whistle
The Haunted Whistle is not crafted at a bench. It comes from a Create haunting recipe applied to a Steam Whistle. Like the other pipes, it has its own extension block.[4][23]
Windchests
The mod has recipes for the Windchest (6 per craft) and the Windchest Controller, shown in-game as the Windchest Controller.[4][23]

Playing music with MIDI
The mod has a MIDI side. The Roll Authoring Table is shown in-game as the Roll Authoring Table. Its screen lists your saved MIDI files, has buttons to open the folder and refresh the list, and shows upload progress. The mod also has a Music Roll item, plus the Tracker Bar and Keyboard Relay blocks, each with its own screen.[4]

There is also a MIDI Input Device Config screen. You can open it with a keybind called Open MIDI Config GUI, listed under the Create: Sound of Steam category in your controls.[4]
Uploads are limited by the server config. The pack's values are the same as the mod's defaults:[24]
- maxMidiFiles is 16, the number of MIDI files a player can upload before older ones are overwritten.[24]
- midiFileSizeLimit is 256 KiB, the largest allowed uploaded MIDI file.[24]
- maxMidiPacketSize is 1,024 bytes, the packet size uploads are split into.[24]
- midiIdleTimeout is 600 game ticks without new packets before an active upload is discarded.[24]
How do you progress through Create: Sound of Steam?
5 parts
The order below follows how the in-pack recipes build on each other: the Pipe Base first, then simple pipes, then reed pipes made with Create's sequenced assembly, then the control parts.[23]
Unverified Where this mod sits in the pack's quest book is not shown in the sources here, so no quest chapter is named for it. If the quest book covers it, that detail lives in the quest chapters and is unconfirmed.
Step 1: the Pipe Base
Nearly every pipe starts with Pipe Base. It is a normal crafting recipe, and one craft gives you 6 bases.[23]

Recipe id: pipeorgans:crafting/base
Step 2: simple pipes
These pipes are all ordinary crafting recipes built around the base: Nasard, Diapason, Gedeckt, Hohlflute, Subbass, Piccolo, Gamba and Rohrflote. Each one uses different woods or metals, so check the recipe viewer for the one you want.[23]
Viola and Vox Celeste are crafted too, but each is built from a Create iron block variant.[23]

Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: pipeorgans:crafting/vox_celeste
You can also swap between Diapason and Prestant in a stonecutter, in either direction.[23]
Step 3: reed pipes
The reed pipes are Trompette, Posaune, Vox Humana and English Horn. The mod groups them in its reed tag. Each is made with a Create sequenced assembly recipe instead of a crafting grid.[23][25]
Each reed pipe takes a different boot: Brass Boot for the Trompette, Dark Oak Boot for the Posaune, Copper Boot for the Vox Humana and Iron Boot for the English Horn. The boots are all crafted, and each craft gives you 6.[23]
Some parts these recipes need were added by the pack. Brass Reed is made by pressing, and Tuning Wire comes from a pack crafting recipe that gives 6 wires per craft.[23]

Here is the Trompette as an example of the sequenced assembly format. The other reed pipes have their own sequenced assembly recipes, each with its own boot.[23]
Step 4: the control parts
Windchest (6 per craft), Windchest Controller and Roll Authoring Table are all crafted in the grid. Keyboard Relay and Tracker Bar are crafted from Create components, including a Brass Casing and a Precision Mechanism, so get your Create basics sorted first.[23]

How does Create: Sound of Steam work with other mods?
4 parts
The in-pack recipes that connect Create: Sound of Steam to other mods all run through Create, plus a pair of nugget recipes the pack added itself. Here is how they fit together.[23]
Create parts for the basic organ pieces
The Pipe Base is the building block for the pipes, and it needs a Create Fluid Pipe to craft. One craft gives you 6 of them. The Windchest also uses a Fluid Pipe and makes 6 per craft.[23]

Haunting a Steam Whistle
You don't craft the Haunted Whistle at a table. It comes from Create's haunting process, applied to a Steam Whistle.[23]
Recipes the pack added
The pack itself adds the recipes for the mod's materials, rather than the mod. The Brass Reed is made by pressing a Brass Nugget, using Create's pressing recipe type. The Tuning Wire is crafted from a Copper Nugget and gives 6 wires per craft.[23]

Which Create: Sound of Steam config options matter?
2 parts
Create: Sound of Steam only has a handful of options, and they split into two files: a server file for MIDI uploads and a client file for goggle tooltips. The pack leaves every server option at the mod default, so you won't need to change anything to get the normal behaviour.[24][26]
Server: MIDI uploads
These options live in config/pipeorgans-server.toml and control how players upload MIDI files to play on their organs. Every value below matches the mod default.[24]
- maxMidiFiles is 16 in the pack (range 1 to 128). It is how many MIDI files a player can upload before the previous ones start being overwritten.[24]
- midiFileSizeLimit is 256 in the pack (range 64 to 1,024). It is the maximum size of an uploaded MIDI file, in kilobytes.[24]
- maxMidiPacketSize is 1,024 in the pack (range 256 to 32,767). Uploaded files are split into packets of at most this size, in bytes.[24]
- midiIdleTimeout is 600 in the pack (range 100 to 1,200). If that many game ticks pass without new packets arriving, an active upload is discarded.[24]
Client: goggle tooltips
These two options are in config/pipeorgans-client.toml and only change what you see on your own screen.[26]
- displayMutationSoundingPitch is true in the pack, so mutation pipes show their sounding pitch while you wear goggles.[26]
- showOctaveBrackets is false in the pack, so octave values in goggle tooltips are not shown in parentheses. Set it to true if you want the brackets.[26]
What changed in Create: Sound of Steam between versions?
2 parts
FTB Skies 2 1.23.0 ships Create: Sound of Steam 0.8.2+1.21.1, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]
0.8.2: the version in the pack
This is the big one, and it's what you get in 1.23.0. It added MIDI compatibility, plus a few new ways to get music into your organ:[27]
- The Keyboard Relay lets you connect a physical piano keyboard to your computer and play your organ.[27]
- The Tracker Bar is a new way to play MIDI files using paper rolls.[27]
- The Roll Authoring Table lets you punch paper rolls with music on them.[27]
- New pipes: Viola, Vox Celeste, Rohrflote, Hohlflute, Prestant, English Horn and Haunted Whistle.[27]
Some existing things changed too:[27]
- Reed pipes (Trompette, Subbass, Vox Humana, English Horn) are now crafted via sequenced assembly, using new reed and tuning wire items.[27]
- The tooltip when you look at a pipe while wearing Engineer's Goggles now shows the octave as well as the pitch.[27]
- The Gedeckt is now visually stopped.[27]
- Subbass and Posaune now have the full 5-octave range.[27]
- Pipe extensions no longer flood the logs with errors on startup.[27]
Earlier fixes
Version 0.6.4 fixed a crash that happened when placing pipes or loading a world with pipes placed, caused by a rendering error.[28]
Version 0.6.3 added translations (Czech, Dutch, French, German, Polish, Russian, Spanish), updated the mod to Create 6.0.6, and gave the windchest and windchest master a new particle texture. It also fixed a crash when placing the base block, blocks not dropping when mined or picked up with a wrench, and the windchest powered state not updating when rotated with a wrench.[29]
