BEER is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.4.4. Block Entity Extended Rendering (or BEER for short) is a small mod to make block entities render from further away. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is BEER?

BEER is part of the mod lineup in this pack. The pack ships version 1.4.4 of the mod, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 (file beer-1.21.1-1.4.4.jar), and it was already present in this pack version or an earlier one.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what BEER adds, who it suits best, or where it fits in the pack's progression. No quests in this pack were found for it, and it isn't on the ATM Star path as far as the available information shows. I'd rather leave those details out than guess, so check the mod in-game before relying on any particular feature.

How do you get started with BEER?

3 parts

BEER is all about the enchanting table. It extends how far the table can detect bookshelves, so you can place them further away than in vanilla. The mod's own text says bookshelves work with enchanting tables at extended ranges, which gives you more freedom in how you lay out your enchanting room.[2]

First, check your table's range

Look at the enchanting table's tooltip. It shows a Bookshelf Range as width by height by width, which tells you how big the detection area is for that table. Check this before you build your bookshelf setup, so you know how far out you can place them.[2]

Then, adjust the range with items

The mod lets you use items to change the range of an individual table. You do this by right-clicking the enchanting table. A modifier can change the width along the X-axis, the height along the Y-axis, or the width along the Z-axis.[2]

Tip: Made the range too big? Hold the modifier item in your offhand to decrease the range instead of increasing it.[2]

The recipe viewer entries for these modifiers also tell you whether an item is consumed or not consumed when you use it, so check that before you spend anything rare.[2]

Where the range is set

The mod's own text says the range can be configured in the mod's config file. That is where the default range for enchanting tables comes from.[2]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve BEER, and the sources here show no recipes that produce its items. Check the recipe viewer in game for how the range modifier items are obtained. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does BEER work?

4 parts

BEER doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling that the sources describe. Its mechanics all revolve around one thing: the enchanting table. It extends how far away bookshelves can be, and it lets you adjust that range per table by right-clicking with items.[2]

Enhanced bookshelf detection

The mod's in-game info says bookshelves can sit further from an enchanting table than in vanilla. Each table also shows its own range in its tooltip as a width x height x width value, so you can check what a table is set to without guessing.[2]

The default range is also configurable through the mod's config file. The exact default numbers aren't in the sources I have, so check the in-game tooltip on your table.[2]

Changing a table's range with items

You modify an individual table by right-clicking it with a modifier item. Each modifier item changes one axis: width along X, height along Y, or width along Z. Holding the item in your offhand decreases the range instead of increasing it.[2]

Item-based modifiers are switched on in this pack through enableItemModifiers. Each use changes the range by 1, set by modifierAmountPerUse. The mod allows that setting to go from 1 to 10.[3]

You can't stack changes forever. maxItemModifiersPerAxis caps the modifiers on each axis, positive or negative, at 5 in this pack. The mod allows values from 1 to 32.[3]

Item consumption

The recipe viewer marks each modifier item as either consumed or not consumed. In this pack consumeItems is true, so items are consumed when you modify a table.[2][3]

XP costs

enableXpCosts is false in this pack, so changing a table's range costs no XP. If you turn it on, increasing the range costs XP and decreasing it gives XP back. The amount is set by xpCostPerModifier, which is 50 per modifier level here.[3]

Tip: Every value in this pack's BEER config matches the mod default. Nothing has been tightened or loosened, so guides written for the default mod behavior should apply here too.[3]

Unverified The sources don't say which items work as range modifiers, what a table's default range is, or how the modifiers are obtained. No recipes for BEER items were provided either.

How do you progress through BEER?

2 parts

The quest book shows BEER (Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach) in a single quest, a quest in "Gearing Up", which is named after an item, Glowstone. It has a checkmark task plus an item task that accepts Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone.[4]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest is in the Gearing Up chapter (Exploration group, chapter 17 of 41 in the book), and the quest book lists it as coming after "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest. Several other enchanting quests are listed after that same quest too, including the shelf upgrade quests and the Enchantment Library.[4]

What BEER does: normally an enchanting table only looks for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area around it. BEER lets you change that range, so you can widen the horizontal reach, raise the vertical reach, and build enchanting setups beyond vanilla limits.[4]

  1. The quest text says to hold the modifier item in your main hand.[4]
  2. The quest text says you can optionally hold a specific item in your offhand to decrease the range.[4]
  3. The quest text says to sneak (Shift) and right-click the enchanting table.[4]

The enchanting ladder around it

The quest text for the enchanting table says your Eterna is capped based on the tier of your bookshelves as well as your World Tier. Here is how the quest book steps it up, quest by quest.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use BEER?

3 parts

BEER (Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach) shows up in one quest in the pack, and it sits in the Gearing Up chapter. That chapter is in the Exploration group and is chapter 17 of 41 in the quest book. It opens with "Gearing Up For Adventure!" quest, a checkmark quest explaining that the chapter is about crafting, enhancing and enchanting your gear.[4]

Where the BEER quest sits

The BEER quest is a quest in "Gearing Up", and the book doesn't give it a title of its own, so it is named after the item it asks for. It comes right after "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest, the quest that introduces Apotheosis enchanting and asks you for an Enchanting Table. Several other enchanting quests also follow that same quest, such as the shelf and library quests. No quest in this chapter lists the BEER quest as its prerequisite.[4]

What it asks for

What the quest teaches

The quest explains that enchanting tables normally only look for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area around them. With BEER you can widen the X and Z range, raise the Y height, use special items to change those dimensions, and build enchanting setups beyond the vanilla limits.[4]

To change a table's range, the quest gives these steps:[4]

  1. Hold the modifier item in your main hand.[4]
  2. Optionally hold a specific item in your offhand, which decreases the range.[4]
  3. Sneak (Shift) and right-click on the enchanting table.[4]

Unverified The quest text does not say which of the three accepted items changes which dimension, or which item goes in the offhand to decrease the range, so check in game before relying on a specific item.

Which BEER config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: BEER keeps its settings simple, and everything lives in one file, config/beer-common.toml. In this pack, every option matches the mod default, so nothing here has been changed from what the mod ships with.[3]

Turning the feature on and off

  • enableItemModifiers is true. This enables item-based enchanting table modifications, which is the main feature of the mod. Set it to false and that feature is switched off.[3]
  • consumeItems is true. Items are consumed when you use them to modify enchanting tables. That is the mod default.[3]

XP costs

  • enableXpCosts is false, so XP costs for item modifiers are off. If you turn it on, increasing costs XP and decreasing gives XP back.[3]
  • xpCostPerModifier is 50, the same as the mod default. It only matters once XP costs are enabled. Increasing costs that much XP and decreasing gives that much back. The allowed range is above 1.[3]

How far you can push the modifiers

  • maxItemModifiersPerAxis is 5, the mod default. It caps how many item modifiers you can apply per axis, positive or negative. The allowed range is 1 to 32.[3]
  • modifierAmountPerUse is 1, the mod default. It sets how much each item use modifies the range. The allowed range is 1 to 10.[3]
Tip: Since the pack leaves everything at the mod default, you don't need to touch this file to follow the guide. If you do edit it, the XP cost options only do anything after you set enableXpCosts to true.[3]

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as beer, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
