What is BEER?
2 parts
BEER stands for Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach. This pack ships version 1.4.4 of it. It changes how far an Enchanting Table looks for bookshelves. Normally a table only scans a 5x5x3 area around itself, and BEER lets you go past that.[1][2]
With BEER you can widen the X and Z range, raise the Y height, use special items to change those dimensions, and build enchanting setups beyond the vanilla limits.[2]
How you use it
- Hold the modifier item in your main hand.[2]
- Optionally hold a specific item in your offhand if you want to decrease the range instead.[2]
- Sneak (Shift) and right-click on the enchanting table.[2]
Where the quest book puts it
BEER has its own quest, "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest, in the "Gearing Up" chapter. That chapter is in the "Exploration & Combat" group and is chapter 14 of 31 in the book. It has 94 quests, and its opening quest says the chapter is about crafting, enhancing and enchanting the gear you need for adventures.[2]
The BEER quest comes right after "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest, the quest that explains the Apotheosis enchanting stats. Two other quests also follow that one: "Enchantment Library" quest and "Miscellaneous Shelves" quest. So BEER sits in the enchanting branch of the chapter, alongside the Apotheosis shelves and library.[2]
The quest has a checkmark task plus an item task that accepts a redstone block, a lapis block or glowstone. Part of the chapter's quest text didn't fit in the material I worked from, so check the quest book itself for anything that comes after BEER.[2]
How do you get started with BEER?
3 parts
BEER (Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach) changes how far an enchanting table looks for bookshelves. Vanilla tables only scan a 5x5x3 area around them. With BEER you can widen the horizontal range, raise the vertical range, and build enchanting setups beyond the vanilla limits.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The BEER quest, "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest, is in the "Gearing Up" chapter (group "Exploration & Combat"). It comes right after "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest, which asks you for an Enchanting Table. Its tasks are a checkmark plus one of Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone.[2]
Your first steps
- Place an Enchanting Table. This is the block BEER modifies, and the quest before BEER asks you for it.[2]
- Get one of the items the BEER quest asks for: a redstone block, a lapis block or glowstone.[2]
- Hold the modifier item in your main hand. Optionally hold a specific item in your offhand if you want to decrease the range instead of increasing it.[2][3]
- Sneak (Shift) and right-click the enchanting table. That changes the range of that one table.[2][3]
- Hover over the table afterwards. Its tooltip shows the current Bookshelf Range.[3]
The modifiers work along the X width, Y height and Z width axes. In JEI, look for the "Enchanting Table Modifiers" category. It lists the modifier items and shows whether each one is consumed.[3]
What the pack's settings mean for you
In this pack's enableItemModifiers is true, so item-based modifications are on. consumeItems is true, so the modifier item is used up each time. enableXpCosts is false, so changing a table's range costs no XP. The XP cost option is set to 50 per modifier in xpCostPerModifier, but it only matters if you turn XP costs on.[4]
Each use changes the range by 1, set by modifierAmountPerUse. maxItemModifiersPerAxis caps it at 5 modifiers per axis, positive or negative. These values match the mod's defaults.[4]
How does BEER work?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
BEER doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling that the sources describe. Its mechanics all revolve around one thing: the enchanting table. It extends how far away bookshelves can be, and it lets you adjust that range per table by right-clicking with items.[5]
Enhanced bookshelf detection
The mod's in-game info says bookshelves can sit further from an enchanting table than in vanilla. Each table also shows its own range in its tooltip as a width x height x width value, so you can check what a table is set to without guessing.[5]
The default range is also configurable through the mod's config file. The exact default numbers aren't in the sources I have, so check the in-game tooltip on your table.[5]
Changing a table's range with items
You modify an individual table by right-clicking it with a modifier item. Each modifier item changes one axis: width along X, height along Y, or width along Z. Holding the item in your offhand decreases the range instead of increasing it.[5]
Item-based modifiers are switched on in this pack through enableItemModifiers. Each use changes the range by 1, set by modifierAmountPerUse. The mod allows that setting to go from 1 to 10.[6]
You can't stack changes forever. maxItemModifiersPerAxis caps the modifiers on each axis, positive or negative, at 5 in this pack. The mod allows values from 1 to 32.[6]
Item consumption
The recipe viewer marks each modifier item as either consumed or not consumed. In this pack consumeItems is true, so items are consumed when you modify a table.[5][6]
XP costs
enableXpCosts is false in this pack, so changing a table's range costs no XP. If you turn it on, increasing the range costs XP and decreasing it gives XP back. The amount is set by xpCostPerModifier, which is 50 per modifier level here.[6]
Unverified The sources don't say which items work as range modifiers, what a table's default range is, or how the modifiers are obtained. No recipes for BEER items were provided either.
How do you progress through BEER?
2 parts
In this pack, BEER has no tier ladder of its own. The quest book places it in the Gearing Up chapter (Exploration & Combat group, chapter 14 of 31), as a quest that comes right after "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest, the one that asks for the Enchanting Table. So the progression you follow is the enchanting setup that BEER plugs into.[2]
What the BEER quest covers
"Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest explains that a normal enchanting table only looks for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area. BEER lets you widen the horizontal range (X and Z), raise the vertical range (Y), use special items to modify these dimensions, and build enchanting setups beyond vanilla limits. The quest asks for a checkmark and one of these items: Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone.[2]
- Hold the modifier item in your main hand.[2]
- Optionally hold a specific item in your offhand, which decreases the range.[2]
- Sneak (Shift) and right-click the enchanting table.[2]
The enchanting path around it
Eterna sets the maximum enchant level, and the quest says it is capped by your bookshelf tier and your World Tier. Quanta controls the randomness of enchants, and Arcana controls their rarity and how many enchants you get per use. The quests that follow the enchanting table lay out the route in this order:[2]
- "Upgraded Shelves" quest: aim for 45 Eterna by reaching the Frontier World Tier. The Hellshelf is easier to craft and boosts Quanta, while the Seashelf needs some fishing and builds Arcana.[2]
- "Hellshelf Infusion" quest: infused versions of those shelves, Infused Hellshelf and Infused Seashelf.[2]
- "Upgraded Shelves" quest: the next goal is 60 Eterna, 40 Quanta and 40 Arcana, which needs the Ascent World Tier and upgrading the infused shelves.[2]
- "Venturing Deeper" quest: Deepshelves, plus the Summit World Tier, push Eterna to a max of 75. The Deepshelf of Arcane Treasures lets the table enchant Treasure Enchantments.[2]
- "Achieving Enlightenment" quest: the final shelf tier is locked behind Infused Dragon's Breath. You need 80 Eterna, between 15 and 30 Quanta and at least 60 Arcana, and candles can give a small Arcana boost.[2]
- "Endshelf" quest and "Level 100 Enchanting" quest: the Draconic Endshelf adds 20 Eterna so you can hit a max of 100, and the Pearlescent Endshelf is the best general-purpose shelf for Quanta and Arcana.[2]
- "Enchanting Table of the Raven" quest: the Enchanting Table of the Raven lets you set Eterna, Quanta and Arcana by hand without nearby bookshelves.[2]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use BEER?
3 parts
BEER has a single quest in the pack's quest book. It sits in the "Gearing Up" chapter, which is chapter 14 of 31 in the book, in the "Exploration & Combat" group. The chapter's intro quest says it teaches you ways to craft, enhance and enchant the gear you need for your adventures.[2]
Where it sits in the chapter
"Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest comes straight after "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest, the quest that asks for an Enchanting Table and explains Eterna, Quanta and Arcana. Several other enchanting quests also unlock from that same quest, such as "Enchantment Library" quest, "Miscellaneous Shelves" quest, "Hotswapping Enchantments" quest, "Upgraded Shelves" quest and "Stabilizing Your Enchantments" quest. So the BEER quest is one of the branches off the enchanting table.[2]
None of the quests in the chapter list it as a prerequisite, so it is a side branch rather than a step you must pass to continue.[2]
What the quest asks for
It has two tasks: a checkmark, and one item, which can be Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone.[2]
The quest text explains the idea. Normally an enchanting table only looks for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area around it. With BEER you can expand the horizontal width on X and Z, increase the vertical height on Y, use special items to change those dimensions, and build custom enchanting setups beyond vanilla limits.[2]
How the quest says to use it
- Hold the modifier item in your main hand.[2]
- Optionally hold a specific item in your offhand, which decreases the range.[2]
- Sneak (Shift) and right-click on an enchanting table.[2]
Unverified The quest text does not say which item changes which dimension, or how far each use changes the range, so check that in game before you plan a big shelf layout.
Which BEER config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Good news: BEER keeps its settings simple, and everything lives in one file, config/beer-common.toml. In this pack, every option matches the mod default, so nothing here has been changed from what the mod ships with.[6]
Turning the feature on and off
- enableItemModifiers is true. This enables item-based enchanting table modifications, which is the main feature of the mod. Set it to false and that feature is switched off.[6]
- consumeItems is true. Items are consumed when you use them to modify enchanting tables. That is the mod default.[6]
XP costs
- enableXpCosts is false, so XP costs for item modifiers are off. If you turn it on, increasing costs XP and decreasing gives XP back.[6]
- xpCostPerModifier is 50, the same as the mod default. It only matters once XP costs are enabled. Increasing costs that much XP and decreasing gives that much back. The allowed range is above 1.[6]
How far you can push the modifiers
- maxItemModifiersPerAxis is 5, the mod default. It caps how many item modifiers you can apply per axis, positive or negative. The allowed range is 1 to 32.[6]
- modifierAmountPerUse is 1, the mod default. It sets how much each item use modifies the range. The allowed range is 1 to 10.[6]
