What is BEER?
2 parts
BEER stands for Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach, and it does one job: it lets you change how far an enchanting table looks for bookshelves. This pack includes BEER 1.4.4.[1][2]
Normally an Enchanting Table only looks for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area around itself. With BEER you can extend that range further out.[2]
How you change the range
- To extend the range, hold a modifier block in your main hand and Sneak + Right-click it on the table.[2]
- To decrease the range instead, hold a piece of nether quartz in your offhand while you do it.[2]
- The quest's item task accepts Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack's quest book covers BEER with the quest "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest, which is also labelled BEER for short. It lives in the chapter Gearing Up, which is in the group Forgotten Knowledge and is chapter 12 of 22 in the book. The quest has two tasks: a checkmark, and handing in one of the items listed above.[2]
The same chapter also has an enchanting table quest, a quest in "Gearing Up", which explains how Apotheosis overhauls vanilla enchanting with its Eterna, Quanta and Arcana values.[2]
Gearing Up has 107 quests in total, and most of them are not shown in the sources here. For the quests that sit around BEER in the chapter, check the quest book itself.[2]
How do you get started with BEER?
2 parts
BEER (Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach) lets you change how far an enchanting table looks for bookshelves. Without it, a table only scans a 5x5x3 area around itself. In this pack the quest book covers it in the "Gearing Up" chapter, in the quest "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest, which is chapter 12 of 22 in the Forgotten Knowledge group.[2]
Your first steps
- Place an Enchanting Table and put your bookshelves around it. The table is the thing BEER changes, so set it up first.[2]
- Grab one of the modifier blocks the quest asks for: Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone. Any one of them counts for the quest.[2]
- Hold the modifier block in your main hand, then Sneak + Right-click the enchanting table. That extends its bookshelf range.[2]
- To shrink the range instead, hold a piece of nether quartz in your offhand while you do the same thing.[2]
- Check your result. The table's tooltip shows its current Bookshelf Range as three numbers.[3]
What to know about the pack's settings
The pack leaves item-based modifiers switched on (enableItemModifiers), and each use changes the range by 1 (modifierAmountPerUse). Both are the mod's default values.[4]
Each axis can be modified up to 5 times, in the positive or negative direction (maxItemModifiersPerAxis). This is also the mod's default. The in-game recipe viewer lists the modifiers under Enchanting Table Modifiers and tells you which axis each one changes: width along X, height along Y, or width along Z.[3][4]
How does BEER work?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
BEER doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling that the sources describe. Its mechanics all revolve around one thing: the enchanting table. It extends how far away bookshelves can be, and it lets you adjust that range per table by right-clicking with items.[5]
Enhanced bookshelf detection
The mod's in-game info says bookshelves can sit further from an enchanting table than in vanilla. Each table also shows its own range in its tooltip as a width x height x width value, so you can check what a table is set to without guessing.[5]
The default range is also configurable through the mod's config file. The exact default numbers aren't in the sources I have, so check the in-game tooltip on your table.[5]
Changing a table's range with items
You modify an individual table by right-clicking it with a modifier item. Each modifier item changes one axis: width along X, height along Y, or width along Z. Holding the item in your offhand decreases the range instead of increasing it.[5]
Item-based modifiers are switched on in this pack through enableItemModifiers. Each use changes the range by 1, set by modifierAmountPerUse. The mod allows that setting to go from 1 to 10.[6]
You can't stack changes forever. maxItemModifiersPerAxis caps the modifiers on each axis, positive or negative, at 5 in this pack. The mod allows values from 1 to 32.[6]
Item consumption
The recipe viewer marks each modifier item as either consumed or not consumed. In this pack consumeItems is true, so items are consumed when you modify a table.[5][6]
XP costs
enableXpCosts is false in this pack, so changing a table's range costs no XP. If you turn it on, increasing the range costs XP and decreasing it gives XP back. The amount is set by xpCostPerModifier, which is 50 per modifier level here.[6]
Unverified The sources don't say which items work as range modifiers, what a table's default range is, or how the modifiers are obtained. No recipes for BEER items were provided either.
How do you progress through BEER?
3 parts
BEER (Bookshelf Extended Enchanting Reach) doesn't have crafting tiers in this pack. The quest book gives it one quest, "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest, in the Gearing Up chapter. That chapter is chapter 12 of 22 in the Forgotten Knowledge group, and it's about crafting, enhancing and enchanting your gear. The quest shows no quest before it, and no quest is listed as coming after it.[2]
What the quest asks for
The quest has a checkmark task, plus an item task that accepts a Redstone Block, a Lapis Block or Glowstone. The idea is to give you something to hold as a range modifier for your enchanting table.[2]
Changing your table's range
Normally an enchanting table only looks for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area around it. BEER lets you push that range out further.[2]
- Hold a modifier block in your main hand.[2]
- Sneak and right-click the enchanting table with it to modify its range.[2]
- To decrease the range instead, hold a piece of nether quartz in your offhand while you do it.[2]
Unverified The quest doesn't say how much each modifier block changes the range, or what the maximum range is, so check that in game before you plan a build around it.
The enchanting ladder around it
The rest of the chapter lays out the shelf tiers for your enchanting setup, and these have real numbers. Start with the a quest in "Gearing Up" quest, which explains Eterna, Quanta and Arcana. Eterna sets the maximum enchant level, and it's capped by your shelf tier and your World Tier.[2]
- "Upgraded Shelves" quest: aim for 45 Eterna by reaching the Frontier World Tier, using the Hellshelf, Seashelf or Spirit Attuned Crystals.[2]
- "Infused Shelves" quest: once you hit 45 Eterna you can infuse shelves, which gets you to a max of 60 Eterna. Infused Hellshelves need at least 30 Quanta, and Infused Seashelves need 15 Quanta and 10 Arcana.[2]
- a quest in "Gearing Up": the next goal is 60 Eterna, 40 Quanta and 40 Arcana, and it needs the Ascent World Tier.[2]
- "Shelves of the Deep" quest: Deepshelves need the Summit World Tier and push your Eterna to a max of 75.[2]
- "Achieving Enlightenment" quest: the last shelf tier needs Infused Dragon's Breath, and the quest asks for 80 Eterna, between 15 and 30 Quanta, and at least 60 Arcana. Candles can top up Arcana.[2]
- "Endshelf" quest and "Level 100 Enchanting" quest: the Draconic Endshelf boosts Eterna by 20, for a max of 100.[2]
- "Enchanting Table of the Raven" quest: once Eterna is maxed, this table lets you set Eterna, Quanta and Arcana by hand with no nearby bookshelves.[2]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use BEER?
1 part
This mod has just one quest in the pack, and it sits in the "Gearing Up" chapter. That chapter is chapter 12 of 22 in the book, in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group. The chapter's intro quest, "Gearing Up For Adventure!" quest, says the chapter is about teaching you different ways to craft, enhance and enchant the gear you need on your adventures.[2]
Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach
The quest is "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach" quest, titled "Bookshelf Extended Enchantment Reach", or BEER for short. It has two tasks: a checkmark, and handing in one of three items: Redstone Block, Lapis Block or Glowstone.[2]
The quest text explains what the mod does. Normally an enchanting table only looks for bookshelves in a 5x5x3 area around it, and BEER lets you extend that range.[2]
- Hold a modifier block in your main hand.[2]
- Sneak and right-click the enchanting table with it to change its range.[2]
- To decrease the range instead, hold a piece of nether quartz in your offhand while you do this.[2]
The same chapter also holds the pack's enchanting setup quests. They start with a quest in "Gearing Up", which explains Eterna, Quanta and Arcana, and they continue through the bookshelf upgrade quests.[2]
Which BEER config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Good news: BEER keeps its settings simple, and everything lives in one file, config/beer-common.toml. In this pack, every option matches the mod default, so nothing here has been changed from what the mod ships with.[6]
Turning the feature on and off
- enableItemModifiers is true. This enables item-based enchanting table modifications, which is the main feature of the mod. Set it to false and that feature is switched off.[6]
- consumeItems is true. Items are consumed when you use them to modify enchanting tables. That is the mod default.[6]
XP costs
- enableXpCosts is false, so XP costs for item modifiers are off. If you turn it on, increasing costs XP and decreasing gives XP back.[6]
- xpCostPerModifier is 50, the same as the mod default. It only matters once XP costs are enabled. Increasing costs that much XP and decreasing gives that much back. The allowed range is above 1.[6]
How far you can push the modifiers
- maxItemModifiersPerAxis is 5, the mod default. It caps how many item modifiers you can apply per axis, positive or negative. The allowed range is 1 to 32.[6]
- modifierAmountPerUse is 1, the mod default. It sets how much each item use modifies the range. The allowed range is 1 to 10.[6]
