What is Akashic Tome?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Akashic Tome is the "book of books". In a big pack, nearly every mod ships its own documentation book, and they quickly clog your inventory. This mod lets you keep them all in a single slot and swap between them whenever you need one.[1]

The pack includes version 1.8-30 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since 2.25 or earlier. The only item it adds is the Akashic Tome itself. It pairs with Morph-o-Tool.[1][2]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who is tired of juggling guidebooks. If you like to look things up in-game while you build and explore, the Tome keeps your hotbar and inventory tidy.[1]

How it works

  • To store a book, combine it with the Tome in a crafting table. You can add as many books as you like, duplicates included.[1]
  • You get the real item from the other mod, not an imitation or a container, so it works exactly like the original book.[1]
  • Right-click the Tome and pick a book from the menu to transform it into that book.[1]
  • Sneak-right-click a modded block to turn the Tome into that mod's book, if you have one stored. If you have several books from the same mod, you get the first one you added.[1]
  • To turn back into the Tome, punch the air.[1]
  • To remove a stored book, transform the Tome into that book, then sneak and press your drop key.[1]
Watch out: You can use a transformed Tome as a crafting ingredient, but you'll lose all the other books attached to it. It's best not to.[1]

Configuration

The mod's config lets you allow every item to be attached, which is off by default. It also has a blacklist for mods, name and item whitelists for what counts as a book, and an alias list that redirects one mod's blocks to another mod's book. These are the mod's general options. The sources don't show whether this pack changes any of them.[1]

Unverified The mod's own description says the Tome is crafted from a Book and a Bookshelf, but the sources don't confirm the recipe used in this pack. The sources also don't show any quests or ATM Star path involvement for this mod, and no in-jar guidebook was found.

How do you get started with Akashic Tome?

2 parts

The Akashic Tome mod adds one item, the Akashic Tome. It exists for big packs like this one, where lots of mods each bring their own documentation book. Instead of filling your inventory with them, you keep them all inside the Tome and swap between them in a single slot.[1][3]

Unverified How you get your first Akashic Tome in this pack is not shown in the sources here. The mod's own project page describes a default crafting recipe, but whether this pack keeps it is unverified, so there is no recipe block in this section. The sources also show no quests in this pack that involve the mod.

Putting books into the Tome

  1. Combine the Tome with a mod's documentation book in the crafting table. You can add as many books as you like, duplicates included.[1]
  2. Right click with the Tome and pick the book you want from the menu. You get the real item from that mod, not a copy, so it works exactly like the original.[1]
  3. Or sneak and right click a modded block. The Tome turns into that block's book if you have stored one. With several books from the same mod, you get the first one you added.[1]
  4. Punch the air to turn back into the Tome.[1]
  5. To remove a stored book, turn the Tome into that book, then sneak and press your drop key.[1]
Watch out: You can use a transformed Tome as a crafting ingredient, but you will lose all the other books attached to it. Better not to.[1]

What the pack lets you attach

In this pack [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Allow all items to be added]] is false, so not every item can go into the Tome. Items qualify if their name contains one of the words in [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Whitelisted Names]], such as book, tome, lexicon, manual, guide, codex, dictionary or journal.[1][4]

Items without those words can still be attached if they are in [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Whitelisted Items]]. The pack's list includes On the Dynamics of Integration from IntegratedDynamics and Dictionary Of Spirits from Occultism. The pack also leaves [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Blacklisted Mods]] and [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Blacklisted Items]] empty, so nothing is specifically banned.[4]

The [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Mod Aliases]] option redirects one mod to another when you sneak-click a block. For example, the pack lists "rftoolsdim=rftools", so looking at a block from the first mod can pick up a stored book from the second.[1][4]

How does Akashic Tome work?

4 parts

Akashic Tome is a different kind of mod from the machine and automation mods you may be used to. The sources show no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item pipes. The only thing it adds is one item, the Akashic Tome, and everything about how it works comes down to that item and one config file.[1][3]

The idea is simple: big modpacks have a documentation book for nearly every mod, and they clutter your inventory. The Tome lets you hold them all in one slot and swap between them when you need one.[1]

Storing books in the Tome

  • To add a book, combine it with the Tome in a crafting table. You can add as many books as you like, including duplicates.[1]
  • You get the real item from the other mod, not an emulated item or a container, so it keeps that item's full functionality.[1]
  • The item gets some NBT data attached so the game knows how to turn it back into the Tome.[1]
Watch out: You can use a transformed Tome as a crafting ingredient, but you probably shouldn't. You would lose all the other books attached to it.[1]

Switching and removing books

  1. Right click with the Tome and pick the book you want from the menu. The Tome transforms into that book.[1]
  2. Alternatively, sneak and right click a modded block. The Tome transforms into that mod's book, if you have one stored. If you have several books from the same mod, you get the first one you added.[1]
  3. To turn back into the Tome, punch the air.[1]
  4. To remove a stored book, transform the Tome into that book, then sneak and press your drop key.[1]

What can be attached in this pack

The config decides which items the Tome accepts. In this pack, [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Allow all items to be added]] is false, so the Tome does not take every item. It only takes items that pass the name whitelist or the item whitelist.[1][4]

The name whitelist, [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Whitelisted Names]], lets in any item whose name contains one of these words: book, tome, lexicon, nomicon, manual, knowledge, pedia, compendium, guide, codex, dictionary or journal.[1][4]

For books that do not have one of those words in the name, [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Whitelisted Items]] lists specific items. In this pack it includes On the Dynamics of Integration from IntegratedDynamics and Dictionary Of Spirits from Occultism. It also includes an Immersive Engineering tool entry and entries for several other mods.[4]

This pack leaves both [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Blacklisted Mods]] and [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Blacklisted Items]] empty, so nothing is specifically blocked. [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Hide Book Render]] is set to false.[4]

Mod aliases

[[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Mod Aliases]] redirects one mod to another when you look at a block. The mod's own example: RFTools adds the Smart Wrench, and the alias "rftoolsdim=rftools" means that looking at an RFTools Dimensions block while you have a Smart Wrench stored makes the Tome grab that item instead.[1]

This pack sets a long alias list. It includes "rftoolsdim=rftools", "xnet=rftools", "mekanismgenerators=mekanism", "thermaldynamics=thermalfoundation" and "integrateddynamics=integratedtunnels".[4]

Unverified How you obtain the Akashic Tome in this pack is not shown by the sources here. The mod's own page describes a crafting recipe, but no pack recipe for the Tome was provided, so the pack's version of it is unverified.

Which Akashic Tome config options matter?

2 parts

Akashic Tome has a single config file, config/akashictome-common.toml. Here is how the pack sets each option.[4]

  • [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Allow all items to be added]] is false in the pack.[4]
  • [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Blacklisted Items]] and [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Blacklisted Mods]] are both empty, so nothing is blacklisted through them.[4]
  • [[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Hide Book Render]] is false.[4]

Whitelists

[[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Whitelisted Names]] holds these words: book, tome, lexicon, nomicon, manual, knowledge, pedia, compendium, guide, codex, dictionary and journal.[4]

[[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Whitelisted Items]] lists specific items by id, for books that the name words might not cover. One example is Dictionary Of Spirits. The list also includes several Tinkers' Construct books, among other mods' guides.[4]

Mod aliases

[[config:config/akashictome-common.toml#Mod Aliases]] is a list of pairs written as one mod name equals another. In the pack, mekanismgenerators and mekanismtools both point to mekanism. The xnet, rftoolspower and deepresonance entries all point to rftools. The Thermal add-ons such as thermalexpansion and redstonearsenal point to thermalfoundation, and the buildcrafttransport, buildcraftfactory and buildcraftsilicon entries point to buildcraft.[4]

What changed in Akashic Tome between versions?

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Akashic Tome 1.8-30. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so it's been part of the modpack for a long time.[5]

Versions 1.8-29 and 1.8-30 both have release changelogs, but the entries aren't available to me here. I can't tell you what changed between them.[6][7]

Unverified What changed in Akashic Tome 1.8-29 and 1.8-30 is unverified, and so is whether the pack changed anything about the mod across its releases. There are no pack changelog entries for this mod.
