What is Functional Storage?

2 parts

Functional Storage is an alternative take on drawer-style storage, in the spirit of Storage Drawers, with an updated look and some extra tricks. This pack includes version 26.1.2-1.6.1, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.6.0-beta or earlier. The mod's project page describes its features, and the only parts it marks as "currently" limited or "planned" are about the Armory Cabinet, covered below.[1][2]

What the mod adds

  • Pulling Upgrade: pulls items from an adjacent inventory.[1]
  • Pushing Upgrade: pushes items to an adjacent inventory.[1]
  • Collecting Upgrade: collects items on the ground.[1]
  • Storage Upgrades: according to the project page, there are fewer types than in Storage Drawers, but each gives a bigger boost.[1]
  • Storage Controller: lets you link drawers to it without direct contact. Controller Extensions act as a Storage Controller once they are linked to it.[1]
  • Fluid Drawer: stores fluids.[1]
  • Simple Compacting Drawer: works like a compacting drawer, but with only 2 slots.[1]
  • Armory Cabinet: stores 4096 non-stackable items by default in the mod. The project page says it can currently only be accessed through external tools such as the Applied Energistics or Refined Storage external storage tools, and lists easier access as a planned feature. The sources here do not show whether the pack changes that capacity.[1]

Linking drawers

The project page's usage notes say you connect drawers to a controller with the Linking Tool. Right click a controller with it to configure the controller. Then right click Normal, Compacting or Ender Drawers to link them, as long as they are in range (8 blocks radius by default in the mod).[1]

Ender Drawers work a bit differently. Left click one with the Linking Tool to copy its frequency, then right click another Ender Drawer, and the two will have their contents synced.[1]

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Functional Storage is a drawer-based storage mod with an updated look and extra features. The mod page currently lists a controller, fluid drawers and item-moving upgrades among them. Here is the order I'd go in, starting with the drawers everything else builds on.[1]

Make a drawer

Start with a plain wooden drawer. The Oak Drawer comes in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 versions: Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2). Make one to begin with. It matters because many of the mod's other recipes, such as the controller, the upgrades and the compacting drawers, take a drawer as an input.[3]

Add a controller and a Linking Tool

Once you have a few drawers, craft the Storage Controller. The mod page currently says you can link drawers to it without direct contact. To do the linking you need the Linking Tool.[1][3]

  1. The mod page currently says to right-click the controller with the Linking Tool to configure it.[1]
  2. Then right-click each drawer you want to link while it is in range.[1]
  3. The tool has a single mode, which links a drawer to a controller, and a multiple mode, which links multiple drawers between 2 points.[4]
Tip: Normal, compacting and ender drawers can all be linked to a controller this way. Left-click a drawer with the Linking Tool to copy its frequency, then right-click another Ender Drawer to sync their contents.[1]

Automate with upgrades

After the basic setup works, add upgrades. The mod page currently describes the Puller Upgrade as pulling items from an adjacent inventory and the Pusher Upgrade as pushing items to one. The Collector Upgrade collects items on the ground.[1][3]

Later you can look at the Fluid Drawer (1x1) for storing fluids, or the Simple Compacting Drawer, which works like a compacting drawer but with only 2 slots.[1][3]

One thing to know about the Armory Cabinet: by default it stores 4096 non stackable items, but it can currently only be accessed with external tools such as the ones from Applied Energistics or Refined Storage. Easier access is only planned, so don't build your first setup around it.[1][3]

How does Functional Storage work?

7 parts

Functional Storage is a drawer storage mod. In this pack it has wood-variant drawers in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts, plus framed versions, fluid drawers, compacting drawers and a controller system. Here is how the pieces work together, as far as the sources explain them.[4]

Drawers and what they hold

The mod describes itself as an alternative take on Storage Drawers. Normal drawers store items. Fluid Drawers store fluids. When you hold a fluid container at one, the mod's own hints say you can empty the container into the drawer or fill a container from the drawer.[1][4]

The mod's project page describes the Simple Compacting Drawer as a compacting drawer with only 2 slots. Both come in framed versions too: Framed Compacting Drawer and Framed Simple Compacting Drawer.[1][4]

Compacting in this pack

This pack adds compacting recipes of its own to the mod. Eight Tiny Coal compact into one coal, and eight Tiny Charcoal compact into one charcoal. The tiny items come from Utilitarian.[5]

The pack also adds a handful of items to the functionalstorage:ignore_crafting_check item tag: snowball, string, honeycomb, magma cream, pointed dripstone, Productive Bees draconic dust, Productive Bees obsidian shard and Bumblezone pollen puff. The sources here do not spell out what that tag does inside the mod, only that the pack fills it.[6][7][8][9]

Controllers and linking

The mod's project page says a Storage Controller lets you link drawers to it without direct contact. You do the linking with the Linking Tool: right click a controller to configure it, then right click normal, compacting or ender drawers that are in range to link them. The page gives that range as 8 by default.[1][4]

The Linking Tool has two modes. One links a single drawer to a controller, and the other links multiple drawers between 2 points, which saves a lot of clicking on a big drawer wall.[4]

According to the mod's project page, Controller Access Points act as a Storage Controller when they are linked to one. The pack has both the plain Controller Access Point and a framed version, Framed Controller Access Point.[1][4]

Ender Drawers

The mod's project page explains how Ender Drawers share their contents. Left click a drawer with the Linking Tool to copy its frequency, then right click another Ender Drawer and the two will have their contents synced.[1]

Automation upgrades

The mod's project page lists a few upgrades that handle item movement. The Puller Upgrade pulls items from an adjacent inventory. The Pusher Upgrade pushes items to an adjacent inventory. The Collector Upgrade collects items on the ground.[1][4]

If you built the wrong one, you can swap between puller and pusher with a shapeless craft in either direction.[10]

Storage upgrades

Storage upgrades were reworked in this version of the mod: there are fewer types, but each gives a bigger boost. Their tooltips describe effects on a drawer's base value: setting it, increasing it or decreasing it. In this pack you can make the Copper Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade with the recipes below. The Netherite one is a smithing transform.[1][4][10]

    Armory Cabinet

The mod's project page says the Armory Cabinet stores 4,096 non-stackable items by default. It says the cabinet can currently only be accessed with external tools, such as the external storage tools of Applied Energistics or Refined Storage. Easier access is listed there as a planned feature, so this may change.[1]

Unverified The sources here include no config file for Functional Storage, so whether the pack changes the Armory Cabinet capacity of 4,096 or the controller linking range of 8 is not shown. Treat both as the mod's defaults; any pack change would be set in the mod's own config.

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

    4 parts

In this pack, Functional Storage items come from crafting recipes. The groups below follow what each recipe unlocks, roughly in the order you will want them.[10]

    Basic drawers

Wood drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes. There is a set for Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Dark Oak, Mangrove, Cherry, Pale Oak, Crimson and Warped. Start with something like Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) or Oak Drawer (2x2).[10]

    Recipe id: functionalstorage:oak_drawer_alternate_x2

One craft of this recipe gives you 2 Oak Drawers (1x2). The 2x2 version gives 4.

Fluid drawers (Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2)) come in the same sizes, and so do the framed versions of the normal and fluid drawers.[10]

    Copy Components (functionalstorage)

The framed drawers also have extra recipes with from_simple in their ids, which use the copy-components recipe type.

    Upgrades and downgrades

The material upgrades are Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. There is also an Iron Downgrade. The netherite one is the odd one out, as the recipe below shows.[10]

    Smithing Transform

      Recipe id: functionalstorage:netherite_upgrade

This is a smithing transform recipe, not a crafting table recipe.

      Then come the utility upgrades:[10]

      Compacting and special drawers

For compacting storage you have the Simple Compacting Drawer and the Compacting Drawer. Each has a framed version: Framed Simple Compacting Drawer and Framed Compacting Drawer. The Ender Drawer and Armory Cabinet round out the special drawers.[10]

What changed in Functional Storage between versions?

All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta ships Functional Storage version 26.1.2-1.6.1. The mod was first included in the pack in 0.6.0-beta or earlier, so it has been part of ATM 11 for a good while.[2]

Unverified The pack changelogs list no entries for Functional Storage that the sources here show, so what changed for this mod between pack releases is not confirmed. Check the pack's own release changelogs for that detail.
