What is Functional Storage?

2 parts

Functional Storage is an alternative take on drawer-style storage, with an updated look and some extra tricks. If you've used Storage Drawers, the idea will feel familiar. This pack includes Functional Storage 26.1.2-1.6.1. Everything below is what the mod's project page currently describes. That page also lists a planned feature, easier access to the Armory Cabinet, so don't treat that as something you can rely on yet.[1][2]

What it adds

  • Pulling Upgrade: as currently described on the project page, it pulls items from an adjacent inventory.[1]
  • Pushing Upgrade: as currently described on the project page, it pushes items into an adjacent inventory.[1]
  • Collecting Upgrade: as currently described on the project page, it collects items lying on the ground.[1]
  • Fluid Drawer: as currently described on the project page, it stores fluids.[1]
  • Simple Compacting Drawer: as currently described on the project page, it works like a compacting drawer, but with only 2 slots.[1]
  • Storage Controller and Controller Extensions: as currently described on the project page, you can link drawers to a controller without direct contact, and an extension acts as a controller once it's linked.[1]
  • Armory Cabinet: stores non-stackable items. By default it holds 4096, and the project page says it can currently only be accessed through external storage tools such as those from Applied Energistics or Refined Storage. Easier access is listed there as a planned feature.[1]

As currently described on the project page, Storage Upgrades have also changed a bit. There are fewer types than in Storage Drawers, but each gives a bigger boost.[1]

Linking things together

As the project page currently describes it, the Linking Tool does the connecting. Right-click a controller to configure it, then right-click Normal, Compacting or Ender Drawers to link them, as long as they're in range (8 by default).[1]

Ender Drawers work a little differently. As the project page currently describes it, you left-click one with the Linking Tool to copy its frequency, then right-click another Ender Drawer, and their contents will be synced.[1]

Tip: The 4096-item Armory Cabinet capacity and the 8-block linking range are the mod's defaults as listed on its project page. Nothing I have shows the pack changing them, but I can't confirm the pack's exact values either.[1]

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

3 parts

Functional Storage is a drawer-based storage mod with an updated look and extra features. The mod page currently lists a controller, fluid drawers and item-moving upgrades among them. Here is the order I'd go in, starting with the drawers everything else builds on.[1]

Make a drawer

Start with a plain wooden drawer. The Oak Drawer comes in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 versions: Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2). Make one to begin with. It matters because many of the mod's other recipes, such as the controller, the upgrades and the compacting drawers, take a drawer as an input.[3]

Add a controller and a Linking Tool

Once you have a few drawers, craft the Storage Controller. The mod page currently says you can link drawers to it without direct contact. To do the linking you need the Linking Tool.[1][3]

  1. The mod page currently says to right-click the controller with the Linking Tool to configure it.[1]
  2. Then right-click each drawer you want to link while it is in range.[1]
  3. The tool has a single mode, which links a drawer to a controller, and a multiple mode, which links multiple drawers between 2 points.[4]
Tip: Normal, compacting and ender drawers can all be linked to a controller this way. Left-click a drawer with the Linking Tool to copy its frequency, then right-click another Ender Drawer to sync their contents.[1]

Automate with upgrades

After the basic setup works, add upgrades. The mod page currently describes the Puller Upgrade as pulling items from an adjacent inventory and the Pusher Upgrade as pushing items to one. The Collector Upgrade collects items on the ground.[1][3]

Later you can look at the Fluid Drawer (1x1) for storing fluids, or the Simple Compacting Drawer, which works like a compacting drawer but with only 2 slots.[1][3]

One thing to know about the Armory Cabinet: by default it stores 4096 non stackable items, but it can currently only be accessed with external tools such as the ones from Applied Energistics or Refined Storage. Easier access is only planned, so don't build your first setup around it.[1][3]

How does Functional Storage work?

5 parts

Functional Storage is described on its project page as an alternative take on drawer-style storage, so most of how it works comes down to drawers, upgrades and a linking system. Here is what the available sources confirm about each part. The page's notes about what is "currently" possible and what is "planned" only apply to the Armory Cabinet, which has its own section below.[1]

Drawers and what they hold

Drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts, and wood types such as Acacia Drawer (1x1), Birch Drawer (1x2) and Cherry Drawer (2x2) show the pattern. Framed variants like Framed Drawer (1x1) exist too.[3]

The project page lists a Fluid Drawer that stores fluids instead of items. The GUI shows hints for emptying a container into the drawer and for filling a container from the drawer. Fluid drawers also come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, for example Fluid Drawer (1x1) and Fluid Drawer (2x2).[1][3][4]

The Compacting Drawer is the compacting version of a drawer. The project page describes the Simple Compacting Drawer as like a compacting drawer but with only 2 slots. Both have framed versions: Framed Compacting Drawer and Framed Simple Compacting Drawer.[1][3]

Upgrades

Storage upgrades were reworked compared with Storage Drawers. There are fewer types, but each gives a bigger boost. Upgrade tooltips describe their effect on a base value: it can be set to a value, increased by a value, or decreased by a value. The sources do not list the actual numbers for this pack. Examples are Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade and Diamond Upgrade.[1][3][4]

Beyond storage size, the project page lists upgrades that move items around. A Pulling Upgrade pulls items from an adjacent inventory, and a Pushing Upgrade pushes items to an adjacent inventory. The Collector Upgrade collects items on the ground.[1][3]

Some upgrades are configured in their GUI: right click there to change the direction or the slot.[4]

Controllers and linking

The project page says a Storage Controller lets you link drawers to it without direct contact. To link, right click the controller with the Linking Tool to configure it. Then right click Normal, Compacting or Ender drawers to link them if they are in range. The default range listed is a radius of 8.[1]

The linking tool has two modes. Single mode links a drawer to a controller. Multiple mode links multiple drawers between 2 points, which saves a lot of clicking on a big wall of drawers.[4]

According to the project page, the Controller Access Point (Controller Access Point) acts as a Storage Controller when linked to one. There is also a framed version, Framed Controller Access Point. A framed controller exists as well: Framed Storage Controller.[1][3]

Ender Drawers

To sync two Ender Drawer blocks, the project page says to left click one with the Linking Tool to copy its frequency, then right click another Ender Drawer. They then have their contents synced.[1][3]

Armory Cabinet

The Armory Cabinet stores non-stackable items. By the mod's default it holds 4,096 of them. The project page says it can currently only be accessed with external tools, such as the external storage tools from Applied Energistics or Refined Storage. Easier access is listed there as a planned feature, not something the sources confirm as available.[1][3]

Unverified The 4,096 Armory Cabinet capacity and the linking radius of 8 are mod defaults from the project page. The sources here do not show whether this pack changes them, nor the exact upgrade values, because no config files for this mod are available.

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

3 parts

The sources I have for Functional Storage in this pack show recipes, not a gated tier ladder. So here is what exists and how the pieces are made, which lets you plan your own upgrade path.[3]

Drawers: the starting point

Drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts, for example Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2). Each of those layouts exists for Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Dark Oak, Mangrove, Cherry, Pale Oak, Crimson and Warped. Here is the Acacia 1x1 drawer as an example.[3]

Beyond the wooden drawers, the pack has Framed Drawers, such as Framed Drawer (1x1), and Fluid Drawers, such as Fluid Drawer (1x1). It also has the Compacting Drawer, the Simple Compacting Drawer and the Ender Drawer.[3]

Material upgrades

The material upgrades are Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. There is also an Iron Downgrade. The Copper, Gold and Diamond Upgrades are crafted in a normal crafting grid, while the Netherite Upgrade is made through smithing, which makes it the odd one out.[3]

    Functional upgrades and tools

Besides the material tiers, there are utility upgrades: Puller Upgrade, Pusher Upgrade, Collector Upgrade, Redstone Upgrade and Void Upgrade. There are also generator upgrades: Water Generator Upgrade, Obsidian Generator Upgrade and Dripping Upgrade. The Puller and Pusher Upgrades can each also be made from the other.[3]

What changed in Functional Storage between versions?

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Functional Storage 26.1.2-1.6.1. The mod was first included in All the Mods 11 0.6.0-beta or earlier, so it has been in the pack for a while.[2]

The mod's own changelogs list the 26.1.2-1.6.0 and 26.1.2-1.6.1 releases, and 1.6.1 is the one you get in this pack version.[2][5][6]

Unverified The changelog entries for 1.6.0 and 1.6.1 weren't available to me, so I can't say what changed between them. The pack changelogs also have no entries for this mod, so no pack-specific changes are confirmed.
