What is Functional Storage?

This pack includes Functional Storage at version 26.1.2-1.6.4, and it has been part of the pack since All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta or earlier.[1]

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

4 parts

Welcome to Functional Storage! This mod is built around drawers, which come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts and in many wood types, so you can match your base. Here is the order I'd make things in.[2]

Start with some drawers

Begin with Oak drawers. The pack has an Oak recipe for each layout, and you will want a few of them. Drawers matter later too, because many other Functional Storage recipes in the pack are crafted from a drawer.[3]

Add a Storage Controller

Once you have a few drawers, make the Storage Controller. Drawers get linked to a controller, and the next step shows how.[2][3]

Make the Linking Tool

The Linking Tool connects your drawers to the controller. It has two modes: one links a single drawer to a controller, and the other links multiple drawers between 2 points.[2]

Upgrades and downgrades

When the basics are working, look at the upgrade items. The Iron Downgrade is a good one to know about: its tooltip says it downgrades the slots to a max of 64 items.[2]

How does Functional Storage work?

4 parts

Functional Storage (Functional Storage) is built around drawers. Wooden drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, for example Acacia Drawer (1x1), Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2). Fluid drawers and framed drawers come in the same sizes. The mod also has special blocks like the Ender Drawer, the Compacting Drawer and the Armory Cabinet.[2]

Opening a drawer and using fluid drawers

To open a drawer's GUI you right click it while crouching. The mod's screens show the item, the amount and the slot, and there are also fields for priority and range.[2]

Fluid drawers show a hint on screen for each of the actions they support: empty a container into the drawer, and fill a container from the drawer.[2]

Controllers and linking

The Storage Controller and the Framed Storage Controller are the controller blocks. The Controller Access Point (Controller Access Point) and the Framed Controller Access Point (Framed Controller Access Point) are the matching access blocks. Each of these drops itself when broken.[2][4][5][6][7]

The Linking Tool has a single mode and a multiple mode. Single mode links a drawer to a controller. Multiple mode links multiple drawers between 2 points, so you can connect a whole wall of drawers in one go.[2]

Upgrades

The mod's language file lists these upgrade items:[2]

The mod's upgrade text describes storage upgrades that set a base value, increase it or decrease it. The downgrade text says downgrades limit the slots to a max of 64 items. The tool text for direction and slot says to right click in a GUI to change them.[2]

The Obsidian Generator Upgrade is a shapeless crafting recipe. Several other recipes, including the collector upgrade, the compacting drawer, the copper upgrade and the ender drawer, ask for any drawer from the drawer tag.[3]

    Compacting in this pack

The pack adds its own custom compacting recipes using the mod's custom compacting recipe type: one pairs Tiny Charcoal with Charcoal, and the other pairs Tiny Coal with Coal. The tiny items come from Utilitarian.[8]

The pack also adds items to the tag functionalstorage:ignore_crafting_check: snowball, string, honeycomb and magma cream, plus the Productive Bees draconic dust and obsidian shard. When the Bumblezone is loaded it adds the pollen puff, and when Xycraft World is loaded it adds pointed dripstone. The sources here do not explain what the tag does.[9][10][11][12]

Unverified The fluid drawer denylist, the items the Armory Cabinet accepts and the items the Creative Vending Upgrade cannot be combined with are set in data tags (fluid_drawer_storage_denylist, armory_cabinet_insertable and creative_vending_upgrade_incompatible). The sources here do not show their contents. The pack also has no Functional Storage config files in the sources, so drawer capacities and upgrade values are not shown here.

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

    5 parts

Here is how Functional Storage fits together in this pack. The sources I have cover the in-pack recipes, so this section walks through the tiers by what you can craft, and I won't invent an order the pack doesn't show.[3]

    Drawer sizes

Wooden drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes. Acacia Drawer (1x1), Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2) show the pattern. The same sizes exist for birch, cherry, crimson, dark oak, jungle, mangrove, pale oak, spruce and warped, plus oak.[3]

The 2x2 size makes 4 drawers per craft.

Oak drawers (Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2)) use recipe ids with "alternate" in the name. Here is the 1x1 one.[3]

    Material upgrades

Beyond the drawers themselves, the pack has material upgrades: Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. The netherite one uses a smithing transform recipe, so you make it at a smithing table instead of a crafting table.[3]

This one is a smithing recipe.

There is also an Iron Downgrade, which is crafted with a shaped recipe too.[3]

      Specialty drawers

Several framed drawers also have a second recipe whose id ends in "from_simple". These use the copy_components recipe type instead of normal shaped crafting.[3]

      Controllers and tools

To manage a bank of drawers, the pack has the Storage Controller and the Framed Storage Controller. Their extensions are the Controller Access Point and the Framed Controller Access Point. The Configuration Tool and Linking Tool round out the toolkit.[3]

      Function upgrades

The other upgrades are Puller Upgrade, Pusher Upgrade, Collector Upgrade, Redstone Upgrade, Void Upgrade, Dripping Upgrade, Water Generator Upgrade and Obsidian Generator Upgrade. The puller and pusher each also have a recipe that turns one into the other, so you can swap between them.[3]

What changed in Functional Storage between versions?

All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta ships Functional Storage version 26.1.2-1.6.4. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in 0.12.0-beta or an earlier release, so that is the version this guide describes.[1]

Unverified The detailed list of changes between Functional Storage releases lives in the mod's own changelog file, and the pack changelogs would be where any pack-specific change to this mod is recorded. The sources here do not show the contents of either, so this guide cannot say what changed from one release to the next.
