What is XyCraft Machines?

XyCraft Machines is in the pack at version 0.7.45, and it has been here since version 2.2 or earlier. The pack gives it its own "xycraft" quest chapter, and that chapter is the best map of how the mod is meant to be played.[1][2]
How the quest chapter is laid out
The chapter is a chain of item quests, and most of them unlock after an earlier one. It splits into a few branches.[2]
- Starting point: the quest for Balloon on a Stick (a quest in "?") shows no prerequisite. The Machine Base, Fluid Port, Item Port and Extractor quests all unlock after the same earlier quest.[2]
- Fluid branch: the Fluid Port quest (a quest in "?") leads to the Hydro Pump quest (a quest in "?"), the Item IO quest (a quest in "?") and the Valve quest (a quest in "?"). The Hydro Pump quest also asks for a fluid pipe from one of several mods, including Pipez, Modern Dynamics, Mekanism and Immersive Engineering.[2]
- Item branch: the Item Port quest (a quest in "?") leads to the Soaryn Box quest (a quest in "?"). After that come the Collector (a quest in "?"), the Fabricator (a quest in "?") and the Void Container (a quest in "?").[2]
- Machine Base branch: the Machine Base quest (a quest in "?") is required for the Light Field, Accelerated Planter, Ignition Plate, Water Block and Fluid Void quests. Each of those also needs one other quest first.[2]
Unverified The sources don't confirm what each machine does, who the mod suits best, or how it fits the pack's overall progression. They also don't place it on the ATM Star quest path, so don't assume you need it for that.
How do you get started with XyCraft Machines?

XyCraft Machines has its own quest chapter in this pack, and following it is the easiest way to learn the mod. Most machines are built from a few basic parts, so crafting those first saves you the most work.[2][3]
Start with a Machine Base
The Machine Base is the first thing to craft. The Fabricator, Fluid Void, Ignition Plate, Item IO, Light Field, Accelerated Planter, Valve and Water Block all use it in their recipes. The chapter has a quest for it: a quest in "?".[2][3]

Make your ports
Next come the two ports. The Item Port is used in the Item IO, Soaryn Box, Collector and Buffer. The Fluid Port is used in the Valve and the Hydro Pump. The quests are a quest in "?" for the Item Port and a quest in "?" for the Fluid Port.[2][3]

Get an Extractor
The Extractor pulls items and fluids out of the environment. Its quest (a quest in "?") follows the same starting quest as the Machine Base and the two ports. The pack also has an Extractor recipe that produces Resin, which makes it a nice first machine to experiment with.[2][3][4]

The item branch
After the Item Port, the Soaryn Box (a quest in "?") is the next quest. After it come the Collector (a quest in "?"), the Fabricator (a quest in "?") and the Void Container (a quest in "?"). The Collector is filterable and collects items before they become entities. The Fabricator crafts items automatically.[2][4]

The fluid branch
The Fluid Port quest leads to the Valve (a quest in "?"), which allows the creation of tanks. The Hydro Pump (a quest in "?") automatically pumps water into a connected tank. That quest also asks for a fluid pipe, and pipes from several different mods are accepted. The Item IO quest (a quest in "?") also comes after the Fluid Port quest, and you can toggle its fill or drain side with a wrench.[2][4]

How does XyCraft Machines work?

XyCraft Machines is built from a few simple pieces: a Machine Base that many machines are crafted from, ports that handle items and fluids, and single-purpose machines. What the mod's tooltips and the pack's recipes confirm is covered here. Power, multiblocks and automation are not explained in depth by them.[3][4]

The Machine Base is the starting point for many machines in this pack, including the Fabricator, Fluid Void, Ignition Plate, Item IO, Light Field, Accelerated Planter, Valve and Water Block. Craft it first.[3]

Fluid handling
The Valve is what allows you to create tanks. The Hydro Pump automatically pumps water into a connected tank, and it can be extracted from at a higher rate. Its tooltip shows a base rate per cycle and a separate waterlogged rate per cycle.[3][4]

The Fluid Void stops fluids from flowing into adjacent blocks.[3][4]
The mod also has a Fluid Selector that creates an unlimited amount of a fluid, and an Item Selector that creates an unlimited amount of items.[4]

- Illumination Field: illuminates a volume of area.[4]
- Charger: charges items using external energy.[4]
Modular tools
The tooltips describe modules for modular tools. Area Survey unlocks a toggleable 3x3 mining ability. The Fortune module provides Fortune I and the Looting module provides Looting I. The Prospector specializes a tool with Fortune VII and the Hunter specializes a weapon for Looting VII. The Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 mining modules improve mining speed, considerably and then drastically for the higher tiers.[4]
The pack changes the smithing recipe for the Perfected Gauntlet, which is made from the Improved Gauntlet.[3]

How do you progress through XyCraft Machines?

XyCraft Machines doesn't have formal named tiers in this pack. What you get is a quest chapter called "xycraft" that walks you through the machines in a branching order. The quests in that chapter have no titles, so below I name each one by the item it asks for.[2]
Step 1: the starter items
The first quest in the chapter, a quest in "?", asks for the Balloon on a Stick and has no prerequisite. The recipe is shapeless.[2][3]

Beyond the quests: the Perfected Gauntlet
The Perfected Gauntlet is upgraded from the Improved Gauntlet at a smithing table. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version, so don't rely on guides written for the mod alone. No quest in the chapter covers it.[2][3]

Unverified The sources don't say what the pack changed about the Perfected Gauntlet recipe. They also don't name the quests that unlock the first four items in the chapter, or the other quests the Machine Base branch depends on, because those quests aren't included in the data. XyCraft Machines isn't on the ATM Star quest path, so you can skip it without blocking your main progression.
How does XyCraft Machines work with other mods?

The quest a quest in "?" has you obtain the Hydro Pump together with a fluid pipe. The pipe slot accepts any one of several options, so you can use whichever pipe type you already have.[2]
