What is Functional Storage?
2 parts
Functional Storage adds drawers: compact storage blocks that hold lots of one item type and plug into automation. This pack ships version 1.21.1-1.5.8 of the mod. It's for you if you're tired of chest walls and want tidy, expandable storage that pipes and hoppers can work with.[1][2]
What you can build
- Drawers store items, and Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) work the same way but hold fluids.[2]
- The Storage Controller acts as a hub for linked drawers. Its maximum range is 40 blocks on all sides, a cube of 80x80x80. Use the Linking Tool to connect drawers to it.[2]
- The Ender Drawer works like an Ender Chest in drawer form. You link two of them with the Linking Tool to sync their contents.[2]
- The Compacting Drawer converts items between their nugget, ingot and block forms. The Simple Compacting Drawer auto-converts an item into its compacted form.[2]
- Framed drawers, such as Framed Drawer (1x1), can mimic the texture of other blocks.[2]
Upgrades and progression
The pack's Basic Storage quest chapter walks you through the mod. Once you have the Linking Tool, the controller, Ender, compacting, fluid and framed drawers, and the Configuration Tool all unlock from it.[2]
Storage upgrades form a quest chain: Copper Upgrade (x8), then Gold Upgrade (x16), Diamond Upgrade (x24) and finally Netherite Upgrade (x32). The quests are "Copper Upgrade" quest, "Gold Upgrade" quest, "Diamond Upgrade" quest and "Netherite Upgrade" quest.[2]
Utility upgrades cover automation. The Puller Upgrade and Pusher Upgrade move items in and out, and the Collector Upgrade vacuums items in. The Void Upgrade destroys overflow, the Redstone Upgrade outputs a fullness signal, and the Iron Downgrade cuts a drawer's capacity to a stack.[2]
Unverified The sources do not show whether this mod sits on the ATM Star quest path, so treat that as unconfirmed.
How do you get started with Functional Storage?
5 parts
Functional Storage is all about drawers, and this pack's Basic Storage quest chapter walks you through the mod in a sensible order. The order I'd follow: a drawer first, then storage upgrades, then the Linking Tool and a controller to tie it all together, then the Configuration Tool to lock things down.[2]
Craft a drawer
Everything starts with a drawer. Wooden drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, for example Birch Drawer (1x1), Birch Drawer (1x2) and Birch Drawer (2x2). The pack has changed these recipes. Make a few, because many of the tool and upgrade recipes in this mod take a drawer as an ingredient.[3]

Birch is just one example of the wooden drawers, which the pack has changed.
Grow your capacity with storage upgrades
Storage upgrades are a tier chain. The Copper Upgrade is an x8 upgrade ("Copper Upgrade" quest), the Gold Upgrade is x16 ("Gold Upgrade" quest), the Diamond Upgrade is x24 ("Diamond Upgrade" quest) and the Netherite Upgrade is x32 ("Netherite Upgrade" quest). Each tier is crafted from the previous one, so start with copper. The Netherite Upgrade uses a smithing recipe instead of a crafting grid.[2][3]

Link everything to a controller
Once you have several drawers, craft the Linking Tool and the Storage Controller. The tool has one mode that links a single drawer to a controller and another that links multiple drawers between 2 points. In the quest book, the Linking Tool quest (a quest in "Basic Storage") leads on to the controller quest (a quest in "Basic Storage").[2][3][4]

The pack changed this recipe too.
- Place the controller, then right-click it with the Linking Tool to start configuring.[2]
- Right-click each drawer you want to add to the network. While you hold the tool, it shows which drawers are connected.[2]
- Double right-click the controller to pull in everything from your inventory that has a slot in the network.[2]
- Sneak right-click the controller with an empty hand to open the upgrades tab. Normal storage upgrades there increase its range, up to 40 blocks on every side (a cube of 80x80x80).[2]
The Controller Access Point acts as a Storage Controller when linked to one. You can push items into it or pull them out of it, so it works as an entry point to your drawers.[2]
Lock your drawers
The Configuration Tool locks a drawer so it remembers the item inside. A locked drawer won't swap that item for something else, which matters once you start pushing items into and pulling them out of drawers automatically.[2]

Extras to unlock next
In the quest book, the Configuration Tool, controller, compacting, Ender, fluid and framed drawer quests all come after the Linking Tool quest. The pusher, puller, void, collector and redstone upgrades hang off an earlier quest instead. Pick whichever fits your base.[2]
- Pusher Upgrade and Puller Upgrade let a drawer push items out of or pull them in from any side. Each one can be crafted into the other.[2][3]
- Void Upgrade voids extra items when a drawer is full, which stops a setup from backing up.[2]
- Collector Upgrade makes a drawer vacuum in items from one of its sides.[2]
- Redstone Upgrade outputs a signal from 0 (empty) to 15 (full) on all sides.[2]
- Compacting Drawer converts what you put in to its nugget or block form. For example, an iron ingot lets you pull out 9 nuggets.[2]
- Two Ender Drawer blocks can sync their contents, like an Ender Chest. Left-click the first with the Linking Tool, then crouch and right-click the second.[2]
- Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) work like regular drawers but store fluids.[2]
- Framed Drawer (1x1) and the other framed drawers can mimic a block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[2]
How does Functional Storage work?
5 parts
Functional Storage is a drawer-based storage mod. Every recipe for it that appears in the pack's recipe dump is marked as changed by the pack. If you remember the mod's default recipes, check the recipe boxes below instead of trusting your memory.[3]
Fluid drawers
The mod has fluid drawers in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts: Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2). The mod's tooltips show two GUI hints for them. One empties a container into the drawer, and the other fills a container from the drawer. The text doesn't say which key or click triggers each hint.[3][4]

Changing direction and slot
Some of the mod's utility items let you right click inside a GUI to change a direction, and others let you right click inside a GUI to change a slot. The sources don't say which items do which, so check in game.[4]
Linking drawers to a controller
The mod's linking tool has two modes. Single mode links a drawer to a controller. Multiple mode links multiple drawers between 2 points.[4]
The Controller Access Point (Controller Access Point) has its own pack recipe, and so does the Configuration Tool.[3]

Upgrades
Storage upgrades in the mod describe their effect in one of a few ways. They increase a base value by an amount, decrease a base value by an amount, or set a base value to a fixed amount. The tooltip text uses placeholders, so these sources don't give the actual values this pack uses.[4]
The pack has upgrade items such as Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade and Diamond Upgrade. The Diamond Upgrade has its own pack recipe, shown here.[3]

Unverified The sources here show no config files for this mod in the pack, so settings such as drawer capacities and upgrade values are not confirmed. Check in game for the exact numbers.
How do you progress through Functional Storage?
6 parts
Functional Storage progression in this pack follows the Basic Storage quest chapter. It splits into three paths: a straight line of storage upgrades, a Linking Tool branch that leads to the Storage Controller and the specialty drawers, and a set of utility upgrades you can pick up in any order. Almost every Functional Storage recipe in the pack is changed from the mod's own, so follow the recipe blocks below rather than any recipe you remember from elsewhere.[2][3]
Drawers: where you start
Each wood type has its own drawer in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes. Oak is the example here: Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2). The other woods, such as Spruce Drawer (1x1) and Cherry Drawer (2x2), have their own pack recipes too.[3]

The storage upgrade line
This is the main tier ladder, and the quests chain in order: "Copper Upgrade" quest, then "Gold Upgrade" quest, then "Diamond Upgrade" quest, then "Netherite Upgrade" quest. The quest titles give the multipliers: x8 for Copper, x16 for Gold, x24 for Diamond and x32 for Netherite.[2]
Each tier is crafted from the one before it. The Gold Upgrade uses the Copper Upgrade, and the Diamond Upgrade uses the Gold Upgrade. The Netherite Upgrade is a smithing recipe that starts from the Diamond Upgrade.[3]

Linking Tool and Storage Controller
The Linking Tool quest (a quest in "Basic Storage") opens the next branch. You use the tool to link Drawers to a Controller: right-click the Controller to start configuring, then right-click Drawers to add them. Holding the tool shows which Drawers are connected.[2]
The Storage Controller (a quest in "Basic Storage") acts as a hub for the network. Double right-click it and everything in your inventory that has a slot in the network gets pulled in. Sneak right-click it with an empty hand to open the upgrades tab. Normal storage upgrades placed there increase the Controller's range, up to a maximum of 40 blocks on all sides, a cube of 80x80x80.[2]

Once the Controller is down, the Controller Access Point (a quest in "Basic Storage") gives you an entry point to the network. It acts as a Controller when linked, so you can push into it and pull from it.[2]
Specialty drawers
These quests also unlock from the Linking Tool quest. Take them as your setup needs them:[2]
- Framed Drawer (1x1) and the other Framed blocks (a quest in "Basic Storage") can mimic one block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[2]
- Ender Drawer (a quest in "Basic Storage") syncs contents between two linked Ender Drawers, like an Ender Chest. Left-click the first one with the Linking Tool on the outside, not the item face, then crouch and right-click the second.[2]
- Compacting Drawer (a quest in "Basic Storage") converts what you put in to nugget or block forms. An Iron Ingot lets you pull out 9 nuggets, and more Iron is converted to Iron Blocks.[2]
- Simple Compacting Drawer (a quest in "Basic Storage") automatically converts the item inside into its compacted form.[2]
- Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) (a quest in "Basic Storage") work like regular Drawers but store fluids.[2]
- Configuration Tool (a quest in "Basic Storage") locks a Drawer so it remembers its item. A locked Drawer will not replace the item that was locked on it, which helps when you push and pull automatically.[2]

Utility upgrades
These quests sit after the same earlier quest as the Linking Tool, so none of them depends on the Controller and you can take them in any order.[2]
- Pusher Upgrade lets Drawers push items out of any side, and Puller Upgrade lets them pull items in from any side.[2]
- Collector Upgrade makes the Drawer vacuum in items from one of its sides.[2]
- Void Upgrade voids the extra items that arrive when a Drawer is full. That stops overflow and keeps a setup from backing up.[2]
- Redstone Upgrade makes Drawers output a Redstone signal on all sides, from 0 (empty) to 15 (full). On multi-slot Drawers you can configure which slot it monitors.[2]
- Iron Downgrade cuts the Drawer's maximum space down to a single stack, which is handy for keeping an item in stock without storing too much.[2]
The Pusher and Puller Upgrades can be swapped for each other with a shapeless recipe, so if you crafted the wrong one you can convert it instead of starting over. That swap is a mod recipe the pack did not change.[3]
Recipes without a quest
Some items have in-pack recipes but no quest in the Basic Storage chapter: Armory Cabinet, Dripping Upgrade, Water Generator Upgrade and Obsidian Generator Upgrade. The Obsidian Generator Upgrade is a shapeless combination of the Dripping and Water Generator Upgrades, and the pack did not change that recipe.[2][3]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Functional Storage?
3 parts
Functional Storage has a single quest chapter in the pack, called Basic Storage. Every quest in it asks you to get one of the mod's items (or one of a small group of variants). Nearly all of them hang off one earlier quest in the chapter that the sources don't show, so I can't tell you what that first step is.[2]
Upgrades and downgrades unlocked first
These quests all unlock straight after that opening quest, so you can do them in any order. Each one is a single upgrade item.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Collector Upgrade, which makes a drawer vacuum items in from one of its sides.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Pusher Upgrade, which lets drawers push items out into any side.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Puller Upgrade, which lets drawers pull items in from any side.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Void Upgrade, which voids extra items once a drawer is full. That stops overflow and keeps a setup from backing up.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Redstone Upgrade. Drawers then output a redstone signal where 0 means empty and 15 means full.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Iron Downgrade, which cuts a drawer's max space down to a single stack. It's handy for keeping some items in stock without hoarding too many.[2]
The storage upgrade line
The storage upgrades form their own chain. Each quest unlocks after the previous one, and the quest subtitles give the multiplier for each tier.[2]
- "Copper Upgrade" quest: the Copper Upgrade, an x8 storage upgrade.[2]
- "Gold Upgrade" quest: the Gold Upgrade, an x16 storage upgrade.[2]
- "Diamond Upgrade" quest: the Diamond Upgrade, an x24 storage upgrade.[2]
- "Netherite Upgrade" quest: the Netherite Upgrade, an x32 storage upgrade.[2]
The Linking Tool branch
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Linking Tool, which links drawers to a controller and links Ender Drawers together. It also opens up most of the rest of the chapter.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" accepts any framed drawer, framed compacting drawer, framed controller or framed controller extension, such as the Framed Drawer (1x1) or Framed Storage Controller. Framed blocks can mimic a block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Ender Drawer. You can link two of them with the Linking Tool to sync their contents, like an Ender Chest.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Compacting Drawer, which converts items to their nugget or block forms and back. An iron ingot inside lets you pull out 9 nuggets.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Simple Compacting Drawer, which auto-converts the item inside into its compacted form.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" accepts any of the fluid drawers: Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) or Fluid Drawer (2x2).[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Configuration Tool, which locks a drawer so it remembers its item. That's useful when you push and pull from drawers.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller (the framed version also counts for the second task). The quest text gives its max range as 40 blocks on all sides, a cube of 80x80x80.[2]
The last quest in the chapter is a quest in "Basic Storage", which unlocks after the controller quest. It asks for the Controller Access Point, an entry point that acts like the Storage Controller when linked to it.[2]
