What is Explorer's Compass?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Explorer's Compass is a compass that helps you find structures anywhere in the world. Instead of wandering until you stumble on a village or a modded dungeon, you tell the compass what you want and follow it.[1]

This pack includes Explorer's Compass version 1.21.1-3.4.0-neoforge.[2]

What it does

  • Right-click with the compass to open a GUI where you pick a structure, or a group of structures, to search for.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass state.[1]
  • Information about your current structure search is shown on the HUD.[1]
  • When the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn.[1]
  • It supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded, so it also works for structures added by the other mods in the pack.[1]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who wants to find structures without long blind exploring: loot hunters, players tracking down a specific structure, and anyone who wants to head straight to something that modded worldgen has added. If you want to find biomes instead, the mod's author points to a separate mod, Nature's Compass.[1]

Tip: The mod's config file lets you adjust properties such as the maximum search radius and which structures are blacklisted. If a structure won't show up in your searches, the blacklist is a good place to check.[1]

Unverified The crafting recipe, the pack's config values and where the compass fits into this pack's progression could not be confirmed from the available sources, so check the in-game recipe viewer for the exact recipe. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Explorer's Compass?

3 parts

Good news: this mod is a single item, so your first step is simple. Make the Explorer's Compass and you can find structures anywhere in the world, vanilla or modded. It comes from Explorer's Compass.[1][3][4]

Craft the compass

This pack adds its own crafting recipe for the compass, so don't go by what you remember from other packs. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[3]

Added by the pack. One of the ingredients comes from AllTheOres, so plan your ore progression around it.

Using it for the first time

  1. Right-click with the compass to open its GUI, then pick a structure or a group of structures to search for.[1]
  2. Follow the needle. While it is not pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn instead.[1]
  3. Shift-right-click to reset the compass state when you want to start a new search.[1]

What this pack's config does for you

Search info shows on the HUD. In this pack General.displayCoordinates is true, so you see the precise coordinates and distance of a located structure and don't have to rely only on the needle direction.[1][5]

The search reaches out to a maximum radius of 5,000 blocks (General.maxRadius), taking at most 50,000 samples (General.maxSamples). If a structure is not found, it may simply be outside that radius.[5]

Watch out: General.allowTeleport is false in this pack. That option only matters in creative mode, opped, or cheat mode, so don't expect to teleport to a located structure.[5]

The structure blacklist (General.structureBlacklist) is empty here, so every registered structure can show up in the GUI.[5]

How does Explorer's Compass work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

The Explorer's Compass is one item that finds structures for you anywhere in the world. There are no machines, power or multiblocks here. You hold a compass, pick what you want to find, and it tells you where to go. It works with every registered structure, from vanilla and from other mods.[1]

Getting the compass

This pack adds its own crafting recipe for the compass, so follow the recipe below.[6]

Using the compass

  1. Right-click with the compass in your hand to open its GUI. From there you pick a single structure or a group of structures to search for.[1]
  2. Once the search runs, your HUD shows information about it, so you can track your target while you move.[1]
  3. Follow the needle to the located structure. When the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn instead.[1]
  4. Shift-right-click to reset the compass when you want to start a new search.[1]

How this pack sets up the compass

The compass's behaviour is controlled by its common config file. Here is how this pack sets each option and what that means for you.[7]

  • Coordinates on the HUD are turned on through General.displayCoordinates (set to true). Once a structure is located, you see its exact coordinates and distance, so you don't have to rely on the needle's direction alone.[7]
  • Teleporting is turned off through General.allowTeleport (set to false). This option would normally let a player in creative mode, an opped player or a player with cheats teleport to a located structure. In this pack you have to walk, fly or ride there.[7]
  • General.maxRadius is set to 5,000. That is the largest radius the compass searches for a structure. A bigger radius makes searches more accurate but can cost more resources.[7]
  • General.maxSamples is set to 50,000. That is the maximum number of samples the compass takes during a single structure search.[7]
  • General.structureBlacklist is left empty. No structures are hidden from the GUI, so everything the compass supports can be searched for.[7]
Tip: If a structure doesn't turn up, remember that searches are capped by the radius and sample limits above. Head a few thousand blocks in a new direction and search again from there.[7]
Watch out: Pack makers and server owners can hide structures by adding them to the blacklist. It supports the wildcards * (any number of characters) and ? (a single character). A blacklisted structure disappears from the GUI and can't be searched for at all.[7]

How do you progress through Explorer's Compass?

There is no tier ladder for Explorer's Compass in this pack. The only recipe the pack lists for it makes one item, the Explorer's Compass, so progression here comes down to getting that one craft done.[3]

The recipe is a shaped crafting recipe added by the pack itself, so it is the pack's own recipe and not something you can assume from the mod alone. Here is the exact in-pack version:[3]

How does Explorer's Compass work with other mods?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Explorer's Compass doesn't have a big web of machine integrations in this pack, but it does tie into other mods in a few useful ways. The biggest one is how you make it: Explorer's Compass uses a crafting recipe added by the pack itself, and that recipe pulls in parts from outside the mod, including an Enderium Gear.[6]

Crafting the compass

Because the pack added its own shaped recipe for the compass, check the in-pack recipe below before you start gathering materials, rather than relying on any recipe you remember from outside this pack. The Enderium Gear means you'll need some progress with other mods before you can craft your compass.[6]

Finding modded structures

The compass isn't limited to vanilla builds. It supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded, so structures added by other mods in the pack should show up in the selection menu alongside the vanilla ones. Right-click to open the menu and pick a structure or group of structures. Shift-right-click resets the compass.[1]

Quests and Nature's Compass

The compass also appears in the pack's quest book. Quest a quest in "?" in the tips and tricks chapter accepts either the Explorer's Compass or Nature's Compass, so crafting either one completes it.[8]

Tip: The two compasses work well as a pair: Explorer's Compass finds structures, while Nature's Compass is the one for finding biomes. If you're hunting for a structure that only spawns in a specific biome, having both makes the search much easier.[1]

Which Explorer's Compass config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Explorer's Compass keeps its settings in one file, and the options below are the ones you're most likely to touch. The mod's own description says you can adjust things like the maximum search radius and blacklisted structures there. Here's exactly how this pack sets each one.[1][9]

Search settings

  • General.maxRadius is set to 5,000 in this pack. It's the furthest the compass will search for a structure, and the allowed range is 0 to 1,000,000. Raising it increases search accuracy but can make the search more resource intensive.[9]
  • General.maxSamples is set to 50,000 in this pack. It caps how many samples the compass takes while searching for a structure, and the allowed range is 0 to 100,000,000.[9]

HUD and teleporting

  • General.displayCoordinates is true in this pack. When you locate a structure, the HUD shows its precise coordinates and distance, so you don't have to rely on where the compass needle points.[9]
  • General.allowTeleport is false in this pack. If you turn it on, a player in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode can teleport to a located structure.[9]

Hiding structures

General.structureBlacklist is an empty list in this pack, so no structures are hidden. Anything you add disappears from the compass GUI and can't be searched for. Wildcards work: * matches any number of characters and ? matches exactly one. For example, minecraft:*village* would match every village structure.[9]

Tip: If searches feel slow after you raise the search radius, bring it back down. The config notes that a larger radius makes the search potentially more resource intensive.[9]

Unverified The sources list the values this pack uses but don't say which of them differ from the mod's defaults, so this guide doesn't claim that any of them were changed.

What changed in Explorer's Compass between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 1.17 ships Explorer's Compass 1.21.1-3.0.3-neoforge. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier, so the exact release that first added it isn't confirmed.[10]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 3.0.3 (the version in this pack): updated to NeoForge 1.21.1.[10][11]
  • 3.0.2 (built for 1.21): fixed the Explorer's Compass recipe, which had been uncraftable.[12]

Pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there's no record of the pack changing it between releases.[10]
