What is Explorer's Compass?
1 part
The Explorer's Compass is a handy exploration tool that locates structures anywhere in the world. If you've ever wandered for ages looking for a specific structure, this is the item that points you straight to it.[1]
Right-click with the compass to open a menu where you pick a structure, or a group of structures, to search for. Details about the search show up on your HUD. Shift-right-click resets the compass. When it isn't tracking a structure, it points at world spawn.[1]
It works with every registered structure, vanilla and modded. That matters a lot in a big pack like this one, where plenty of mods add their own structures worth hunting down.[1]
The mod can also be configured, including the maximum search radius and blacklisted structures. It only finds structures, not biomes. For biomes, its sister item Nature's Compass does that job.[1]
Unverified The sources don't show the maximum search radius or which structures, if any, are blacklisted in this pack, so the in-pack config values are unconfirmed.
Where it fits in the pack
All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Explorer's Compass version 1.21.1-3.0.3-neoforge. It has been part of the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]
It isn't tied to a specific progression tier. It's a utility you can pick up whenever you want to go exploring. It shows up in the Tips and Tricks quest chapter: quest a quest in "?" is completed by having either an Explorer's Compass or a Nature's Compass, so crafting one ticks that quest off.[3]
How do you get started with Explorer's Compass?
3 parts
The Explorer's Compass is the only item this mod adds. It lets you locate structures anywhere in the world, so you can find a specific vanilla or modded structure without wandering around hoping to stumble onto it.[1]
Step 1: Craft the compass
This pack adds its own crafting recipe for the compass. Use the recipe shown below instead of any recipe you may have seen in other packs or on the mod's page.[4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/explorerscompass_explorerscompass

Step 2: Tick off the quest
The pack's tips and tricks chapter has a quest, a quest in "?", that you complete by having either a Nature's Compass or an Explorer's Compass. If you already made a Nature's Compass, you've done it. If not, crafting this compass completes it too.[3]
Step 3: Search for a structure
- Right-click with the compass in your hand to open its search menu.[1]
- Pick a single structure or a group of structures to search for. The compass supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded.[1]
- Once it finds something, information about the search appears on your HUD, so you can keep track of it while you travel.[1]
- When you want to start over, shift-right-click to reset the compass.[1]
The mod has config options for the maximum search radius and for blacklisting structures. If a structure never shows up or can't be found, one of these settings may be the reason.[1]
Unverified This pack's actual search radius and structure blacklist settings aren't covered by the available sources.
How does Explorer's Compass work?
3 parts
The Explorer's Compass is one item that finds structures for you anywhere in the world. There are no machines, power or multiblocks here. You hold a compass, pick what you want to find, and it tells you where to go. It works with every registered structure, from vanilla and from other mods.[1]
Getting the compass
This pack adds its own crafting recipe for the compass, so follow the recipe below.[4]

Using the compass
- Right-click with the compass in your hand to open its GUI. From there you pick a single structure or a group of structures to search for.[1]
- Once the search runs, your HUD shows information about it, so you can track your target while you move.[1]
- Follow the needle to the located structure. When the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn instead.[1]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass when you want to start a new search.[1]
How this pack sets up the compass
The compass's behaviour is controlled by its common config file. Here is how this pack sets each option and what that means for you.[5]
- Coordinates on the HUD are turned on through General.displayCoordinates (set to true). Once a structure is located, you see its exact coordinates and distance, so you don't have to rely on the needle's direction alone.[5]
- Teleporting is turned off through General.allowTeleport (set to false). This option would normally let a player in creative mode, an opped player or a player with cheats teleport to a located structure. In this pack you have to walk, fly or ride there.[5]
- General.maxRadius is set to 5,000. That is the largest radius the compass searches for a structure. A bigger radius makes searches more accurate but can cost more resources.[5]
- General.maxSamples is set to 50,000. That is the maximum number of samples the compass takes during a single structure search.[5]
- General.structureBlacklist is left empty. No structures are hidden from the GUI, so everything the compass supports can be searched for.[5]
How do you progress through Explorer's Compass?
2 parts
Good news if you like things simple: there are no tiers here. In this pack, Explorer's Compass is the only item made from this mod's recipes, so once you've crafted one you have the whole thing.[4]
Crafting your compass
The pack adds its own shaped crafting recipe for the compass. Use the recipe below rather than one you remember from another pack or an older guide.[4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/explorerscompass_explorerscompass
Custom recipe added by the pack
Where it shows up in the quests
The compass appears in the tips_and_tricks quest chapter, in quest a quest in "?". It's an untitled quest, and its task accepts either Nature's Compass or Explorer's Compass. That means you don't need both: craft whichever compass you prefer and the quest counts it.[3]
Unverified The sources don't show the quest's rewards, what it depends on, or when in your playthrough you're expected to make the compass.
How does Explorer's Compass work with other mods?
3 parts
Explorer's Compass doesn't have a big web of machine integrations in this pack, but it does tie into other mods in a few useful ways. The biggest one is how you make it: Explorer's Compass uses a crafting recipe added by the pack itself, and that recipe pulls in parts from outside the mod, including an Enderium Gear.[4]
Crafting the compass
Because the pack added its own shaped recipe for the compass, check the in-pack recipe below before you start gathering materials, rather than relying on any recipe you remember from outside this pack. The Enderium Gear means you'll need some progress with other mods before you can craft your compass.[4]

Finding modded structures
The compass isn't limited to vanilla builds. It supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded, so structures added by other mods in the pack should show up in the selection menu alongside the vanilla ones. Right-click to open the menu and pick a structure or group of structures. Shift-right-click resets the compass.[1]
Quests and Nature's Compass
The compass also appears in the pack's quest book. Quest a quest in "?" in the tips and tricks chapter accepts either the Explorer's Compass or Nature's Compass, so crafting either one completes it.[3]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Explorer's Compass?
Explorer's Compass shows up in just one quest in this pack, in the tips_and_tricks chapter. It's a quest in "?", which has no title of its own.[3]
The task is an item task that you can complete in one of two ways: get either an Explorer's Compass or an Nature's Compass. So if you've already made the other compass, you don't strictly need the Explorer's Compass to tick this one off.[3]
Unverified The quest's rewards, its prerequisites and where it sits in the tips_and_tricks chapter's order couldn't be confirmed, so check the quest book in-game for those details.
Which Explorer's Compass config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Explorer's Compass keeps its settings in one file, and the options below are the ones you're most likely to touch. The mod's own description says you can adjust things like the maximum search radius and blacklisted structures there. Here's exactly how this pack sets each one.[1][6]
Search settings
- General.maxRadius is set to 5,000 in this pack. It's the furthest the compass will search for a structure, and the allowed range is 0 to 1,000,000. Raising it increases search accuracy but can make the search more resource intensive.[6]
- General.maxSamples is set to 50,000 in this pack. It caps how many samples the compass takes while searching for a structure, and the allowed range is 0 to 100,000,000.[6]
HUD and teleporting
- General.displayCoordinates is true in this pack. When you locate a structure, the HUD shows its precise coordinates and distance, so you don't have to rely on where the compass needle points.[6]
- General.allowTeleport is false in this pack. If you turn it on, a player in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode can teleport to a located structure.[6]
Hiding structures
General.structureBlacklist is an empty list in this pack, so no structures are hidden. Anything you add disappears from the compass GUI and can't be searched for. Wildcards work: * matches any number of characters and ? matches exactly one. For example, minecraft:*village* would match every village structure.[6]
Unverified The sources list the values this pack uses but don't say which of them differ from the mod's defaults, so this guide doesn't claim that any of them were changed.
What changed in Explorer's Compass between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Explorer's Compass 1.21.1-3.0.3-neoforge. The mod was first included in All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier, so it has been in the pack for a long time.[2]
Mod changelog highlights
- 1.21-3.0.2-neoforge: fixed the uncraftable Explorer's Compass recipe. If you read about the compass being impossible to craft, that was a bug in this earlier release.[7]
- 1.21.1-3.0.3-neoforge: updated to NeoForge 1.21.1. This is the build the pack uses in 4.5.[2][8]
Unverified Changes made to this mod in the pack's own release changelogs are not shown in the sources here, so any pack-specific changes to Explorer's Compass are unverified. Check the All the Mods 10 changelogs for those.
