What is Corail Tombstone?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.14 guide

Corail Tombstone is the pack's death-safety net: when you die, your inventory goes into a decorative grave instead of scattering across the floor, so a lava dive or a surprise mob stack is an inconvenience rather than a run-ender. This pack ships version 9.4.8 for NeoForge 1.21.1.[1][2]

It does a lot more than hold your stuff, though. The mod wraps a medieval fantasy layer around death itself: souls that haunt your graves, prayers, rituals, soul-bound magic, forgotten scrolls with riddles hidden inside, tameable undead companions and a flying carpet. It has been in development since 2016 and is built to work in singleplayer and on dedicated servers alike, with broad compatibility with other mods.[1]

Who it's for

If you mostly want the insurance policy, you can ignore everything else and just walk back to your grave. If you like side progression, there's a whole knowledge system to dig into: you earn knowledge points by enchanting with a grave's soul, freeing a soul from a receptacle, praying near a decorative grave with the Ankh of Prayer, or completing the mod's advancements. Those points buy perks in the Knowledge of Death screen, which also contains a cross-linked compendium explaining the mod's features.[1]

Tip: The Knowledge of Death keybind isn't bound by default: look under the "misc" category in your controls, or open the mod's screens with the /tbgui client command.[1]

Where it fits

Tombstone runs alongside your normal progression rather than gating it. You get the grave protection from your very first death, and the knowledge, perk and exploration content is there whenever you feel like chasing it, abandoned graves on the Overworld surface and in the ocean are a good early excuse to go looking.[1]

Watch out: Don't add a second grave mod on top of this one. Player graves here are indestructible except to creative-mode players, and running another grave mod alongside it is explicitly discouraged.[1]

How do you get started with Corail Tombstone?

5 parts

Corail Tombstone keeps your inventory safe when you die. A decorative grave appears where you fell, and your stuff waits inside. This section covers what to craft first so you can make and customize your own graves.[1]

Step one: get some Grave Dust

Almost every recipe from this mod uses Grave Dust. You get it by killing undead mobs or through the Cat Morning Gift, so hunting some undead is a good first goal.[1][3]

Step two: make a Grave Plate

The Grave Plate is how you name your graves. Craft it, then combine it with an iron ingot at an anvil to engrave a name. You can then apply or change that name on your decorative graves. A config option can disable name changes.[1][3]

Next, craft some marble

Marble is the base material for the decorative grave recipes, and each color also has stairs, slabs and walls for building. White Marble and Dark Marble are the simplest to start with.[3]

Finally, build a decorative grave

A decorative grave is a block that gives off a faint fog at night. You can harvest it with a pickaxe or shovel. It comes in several models and colors, and there is no gameplay difference between them, so pick whatever you like. The mod's own description says you need Grave's Dust and an Essence of Undeath to build one. That ingredient is unlocked through advancements, and the first one comes from picking your favorite grave in the in-game config.[1]

The in-pack recipe pairs a marble with an item from the decorative grave ingredients tag. Here is the white marble version that makes Decorative Grave Normal. The other colors and models follow the same pattern.[3]

Extra loot while you get set up

Lootable abandoned graves generate on the Overworld surface and in the ocean. They come in 5 colors, and their loot is configurable in the mod's loot table config folder. They are worth a look while you hunt for undead.[1]

How does Corail Tombstone work?

6 parts

Corail Tombstone isn't a machine mod. There's no power, fluid or item-pipe handling to set up. Everything revolves around what happens when you die: your inventory is kept safe in a grave, and a web of souls, prayers and knowledge grows around it. Here's how those systems work.[1]

Decorative graves and haunting souls

When you die, a decorative grave appears. It's a special block that gives off a faint fog at night, you can harvest it with a pickaxe or shovel, and you can customise it at the anvil. It comes in several models and colors, with no gameplay difference between them. It's purely a matter of taste.[1]

After a while a soul will often come to haunt the grave, and the config lets you adjust how often that happens. The soul stays until you free it. Freeing it enables certain enchantments (via a magic scroll or tablet) or an upgrade to the grave's key.[1]

The mod's own page says building a decorative grave takes Grave's Dust and an Essence of Undeath. This pack's recipes are marble-based instead, so go by the recipe below. Marble types are made with Grave Dust, and the blue marble recipe has been changed by the pack.[1][3]

Engraving a grave

At the anvil, combine a grave plate with an iron ingot to engrave a name onto it. You can then apply or change that name on your decorative graves. A config option can disable name changes, but this pack's config isn't available, so I can't tell you whether it's turned on here.[1]

Ankh prayers and knowledge

The Ankh Of Prayer lets you perform prayers depending on your alignment, earning you knowledge points along the way. Among other things, it can grant beneficial effects when you pray at decorative graves, or charm certain creatures such as undeads into adventuring companions. The mod's advancements also cover using it on a grave and on a zombie-villager.[1][4]

Knowledge points come from four places: using a grave's soul to enchant an item, freeing a soul from a receptacle, praying near a decorative grave with the Ankh, and completing the mod's advancements. The mod's default Ankh cooldown is 6 in-game hours and is adjustable in config. I can't confirm that value for this pack.[1]

You spend points on perks in the Knowledge of Death screen. Its keybind isn't set by default and sits under "misc". Each perk is a small bonus tied to one of the mod's features, and some only appear if the related feature is enabled in the config. The same screen also holds a Compendium that gathers information about the mod.[1]

  • Ghostly Shape is a ghostly appearance you receive after a death. There's also an advancement for cancelling it.[4]
  • Preservation preserves experience and beneficial effects on death.[4]
  • The Soulbound enchantment preserves the item on death.[4]
  • The Prayer effect is received when a prayer is cast on the target.[4]

World features

Rarely, a Grave Guardian may appear near a grave. It protects the surrounding area from hostile creatures and offers trades, which are one way to obtain Essence of Undeath.[1]

Lootable abandoned graves generate on the Overworld surface or in the ocean, in 5 different colors. According to the mod's page, their loot is configurable in config/tombstone/loottables. You can find them with the structure tag #tombstone:abandoned_grave, and their biomes can be adjusted via the tags #tombstone:has_structure/abandoned_grave_land and #tombstone:has_structure/abandoned_grave_ocean. Equipment loot follows the item tags #tombstone:lootable/armor, #tombstone:lootable/weapon and #tombstone:lootable/tool.[1]

Useful commands and settings

  • /tbgui opens the in-game configuration screen. A customizable keybind does the same.[1]
  • TBShowLastGrave shows your last grave's position.[1]
  • TBRestoreInventory lets you click your grave at a distance to restore your inventory.[1]
  • TBRecovery manually backs up all players (or one), or rolls a player back from an old save.[1]

Unverified The sources don't say anything about machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for this mod. This pack's own config values for the mod (such as haunting frequency, grave rules or the Ankh cooldown) also aren't available, so treat the mod defaults above as unconfirmed for this pack.

How do you progress through Corail Tombstone?

6 parts

Here's the honest picture first: no quests in this pack involve Corail Tombstone, and the mod isn't on the main quest path. So there's no quest-driven progression to follow. What you do get is a recipe-driven ladder, and almost all of it hangs on one ingredient: Grave Dust.[3]

Step 1: Get grave dust

Nearly every recipe in the mod needs Grave Dust, so getting a supply is your real first goal. The recipes I can confirm include a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe that outputs wax plus grave dust. Other ways of getting it, like mob drops or loot, aren't covered by my sources.[3]

    Step 2: Marble

Marble is the building-block tier. Dark Marble, White Marble and Carmin Marble all use the mod's own recipes. Blue Marble and Green Marble are different: the pack changed those two recipes, so go by the recipes shown here and not by anything you remember from the mod's defaults.[3]

Each marble also has slab, stairs and wall variants, for example White Marble Slab, White Marble Stairs and White Marble Wall. You can make them at a crafting table or a stonecutter.[3]

    Step 3: Decorative graves

Any marble can be turned into decorative graves such as Decorative Tombstone, Decorative Grave Cross, Decorative Grave Normal, Decorative Grave Original, Decorative Grave Simple and Decorative Subaraki Grave. The recipes for these are named after the marble colour: black (dark marble), white, blue, green and carmin.[3]

    Step 4: Grave-dust utility items

Next come the items that are crafted from grave dust plus one common material. These include Grave Plate, Bone Needle, Strange Scroll, Strange Tablet, Ankh Of Prayer, Voodoo Poppet and Fishing Rod Of Misadventure. The sources only show how they're made, so I won't describe what they do.[3]

    Step 5: The books

The mod's books are the next tier up: Book Of Disenchantment, Book Of Magic Impregnation, Book Of Oblivion, Book Of Recycling, Book Of Repairing, Book Of Scribe and Book Of Soulbound. Their recipes use more valuable materials, such as diamonds, emeralds and amethyst. Each one uses a special disableable recipe type.[3]

Unverified Whether any of these book recipes are switched off in this pack's config can't be confirmed from the available sources, so check in-game that a book is craftable before you plan around it.

Step 6: Impregnated diamond and beyond

The top of the crafting ladder is Impregnated Diamond, which is made from grave dust and a diamond. Receptacle Of Familiar sits one step above it and is crafted from the impregnated diamond.[3]

There's also a special recipe that upgrades a Grave Key into an enchanted version. It takes a plain grave key plus an ingredient from the mod's enchanted-grave-key tag.[3]

How does Corail Tombstone work with other mods?

    1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.14 guide

The one in-pack link between Corail Tombstone and another mod is with Productive Bees. The pack has a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe that outputs Wax and Grave Dust together, and it is marked as changed by the pack.[5]

    Centrifuge (productivebees)

      Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/tombstone/honeycomb_grave

A centrifuge recipe changed by the pack. It outputs Wax and Grave's Dust.

      Why this matters

Grave's Dust is one of the things you need to build your own decorative graves, along with an Essence of Undeath. The mod's own description says you normally get the dust by killing undead mobs or through the Cat Morning Gift. In this pack, the centrifuge recipe gives you another source of it, so you aren't limited to hunting undead.[1][5]

The mod's project page says Corail Tombstone offers many compatibilities with other mods, but the part of it available here does not name them. Beyond the centrifuge recipe, no other connections with other mods are confirmed for this pack.[1]

Which Corail Tombstone config options matter?

Corail Tombstone is described as deeply configurable, covering everything from solo tweaks to server rules. It also works in singleplayer and on dedicated servers, so the options can matter on either setup.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual config values for this mod aren't available, so I can't say which options the pack changed from the mod defaults or what they are set to. Check the mod's config in your own instance before relying on any specific grave, perk or multiplayer setting.
