What is Corail Tombstone?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.14 guide
Corail Tombstone is the pack's death-safety net: when you die, your inventory goes into a decorative grave instead of scattering across the floor, so a lava dive or a surprise mob stack is an inconvenience rather than a run-ender. This pack ships version 9.4.8 for NeoForge 1.21.1.[1][2]
It does a lot more than hold your stuff, though. The mod wraps a medieval fantasy layer around death itself: souls that haunt your graves, prayers, rituals, soul-bound magic, forgotten scrolls with riddles hidden inside, tameable undead companions and a flying carpet. It has been in development since 2016 and is built to work in singleplayer and on dedicated servers alike, with broad compatibility with other mods.[1]
Who it's for
If you mostly want the insurance policy, you can ignore everything else and just walk back to your grave. If you like side progression, there's a whole knowledge system to dig into: you earn knowledge points by enchanting with a grave's soul, freeing a soul from a receptacle, praying near a decorative grave with the Ankh of Prayer, or completing the mod's advancements. Those points buy perks in the Knowledge of Death screen, which also contains a cross-linked compendium explaining the mod's features.[1]
Where it fits
Tombstone runs alongside your normal progression rather than gating it. You get the grave protection from your very first death, and the knowledge, perk and exploration content is there whenever you feel like chasing it, abandoned graves on the Overworld surface and in the ocean are a good early excuse to go looking.[1]
How do you get started with Corail Tombstone?
6 parts
Corail Tombstone keeps your inventory safe in a grave when you die, so your first goal is to be ready for that moment. When you die, a decorative grave block appears with your items. You can harvest it with a pickaxe or shovel, and it gives off a faint fog at night.[1]
First, get Grave Dust
Most of the crafts below use Grave Dust, so this is your first job. You can find it by killing undead, breaking tablets, or through the Cat Morning Gift.[1][3][4]
Then make grave marble
Marble is the base for decorative graves, and the Strange Tablet uses a marble tag too. The pack changed the dark marble recipe, while the white marble recipe is the mod's own.[3]
Both marbles also have slab, stairs and wall versions, such as the Dark Marble Slab and White Marble Wall, and you can make them in a stonecutter too.[3]
Craft a grave plate
The Grave Plate lets you personalize your grave. At an anvil, you combine a plate with an iron ingot to engrave a name, which you can then apply to your decorative graves.[1][3]

Decorative graves
Decorative graves come in several models and colors, with no gameplay difference between them, so choose whatever you like. The pack changed these recipes. Either marble works, for example for the Decorative Tombstone.[1][3]

Scrolls and tablets
Next up are the Strange Scroll and Strange Tablet, and the mod has an advancement for creating each of them. A soul will often haunt your grave, and once you free it, it enables certain enchantments through a magic scroll or tablet.[1][3][4]

Other early crafts
- Voodoo Poppet: the pack changed this recipe, and it now needs a TFC dead bush.[3]
- Impregnated Diamond, then the Familiar Receptacle. The mod has an advancement for capturing a soul in a receptacle.[3][4]
- Ankh Of Pray: one advancement has you use it on a zombie-villager.[3][4]

How does Corail Tombstone work?
6 parts
Corail Tombstone isn't a machine mod. The sources show no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for it. Its systems all revolve around what happens when you die, and how you recover, customize and get stronger from it.[1]
What happens when you die
When you die, a decorative grave appears and keeps your inventory safe. It's a block that gives off a faint fog at night, you can harvest it with a pickaxe or shovel, and you can customize it at the anvil. The different models and colors make no gameplay difference, it's purely a matter of taste.[1]
After a while a soul will often come to haunt the grave and stays until you free it. A freed soul enables certain enchantments (magic scroll or tablet) or an upgrade to the grave's key. The config lets you adjust how often souls show up.[1]
This pack's client config sets the following. Placement uses the NORMAL rule via client.grave_spawn_rule (the other options are SAFEST and NEAREST). Graves are allowed to appear in water through client.allow_grave_in_water. Graves are still created on death because client.deny_grave_on_death is false.[5]
- Sneaking on a grave activates it, thanks to client.activate_grave_by_sneaking being true.[5]
- Holding the key highlights the grave from far away when client.highlight is true. The marker style is set to WING via client.marker_type.[5]
- Fog around graves is LOW density and only appears at NIGHT, set by client.fog_density and client.fog_period.[5]
- Items are auto-equipped on recovery under the ALWAYS rule (client.auto_equip_rule). Elytra priority (client.equip_elytra_in_priority) and hotbar tool priority (client.priorize_tool_on_hotbar) are both off.[5]
Building and engraving graves
Decorative graves are crafted from marble plus an ingredient from a tag the pack uses for grave crafting, and the pack changed these recipes. Here is the dark marble version of the simple grave, followed by how you make the marble itself.[3]

The pack changed this recipe. It needs Grave Dust.
This one is the mod's own recipe, not changed by the pack.
Grave Dust comes from killing undead, breaking tablets, or the Cat Morning Gift. The mod's page also names an Essence of Undeath, an ingredient unlocked through advancements, as something you need to build your own decorative grave.[1][3][4]
To engrave a name, combine a Grave Plate with an iron ingot at the anvil. You can then apply or change that name on your decorative graves. A config option can disable name changes.[1][3]

Ankh, alignment and Knowledge of Death
The Ankh Of Pray lets you pray, and what you can do depends on your alignment. Praying at decorative graves can grant beneficial effects, and it can charm certain creatures such as undead into companions. Each prayer earns knowledge points.[1][3]

Alignment is shaped by what you do. In this pack's common config, alignment.points_pray_of_protection gives 2 points, alignment.points_exorcism_zombie_villager gives 3, alignment.points_free_soul_receptacle gives 10, and alignment.points_kill_raider gives 1.[6]
The penalties are -3 for killing a villager (alignment.points_kill_villager), -2 for plundering a player's grave (alignment.points_plunder_player_grave), and -2 for the tablet of cupidity (alignment.points_tablet_of_cupidity).[6]
Knowledge points come from using a grave's soul to enchant an item, freeing a soul from a receptacle, praying near a decorative grave, or completing the mod's advancements. You spend them on perks in the Knowledge of Death screen. Its keybind isn't set by default and sits under misc. The same screen has a Compendium that gathers info about the mod.[1]
The mod's default Ankh cooldown is 6 in-game hours, and it's adjustable in config.[1]
Magic books, souls and the grave key
The mod has magic books for disenchanting, magic impregnation, recycling and repairing: Book Of Disenchantment, Book Of Magic Impregnation, Book Of Recycling and Book Of Repairing. Their recipes are mod recipes, and each uses grave dust.[3]

The advancement list also credits these books with items disenchanted, impregnated, recycled and repaired, and with enchanting an arrow via the Book of Magic Impregnation. With the Curios mod, the pack lets magic books use a dedicated slot to enchant with a soul (compatibility.curio_magic_book_support). Automatically equipping magic books into it is off (client.equip_curio_slot_magic_book).[4][5][6]
A freed soul can upgrade the Grave Key. That upgrade is a mod recipe that takes the key plus an ingredient from a dedicated tag.[1][3]
Enchanted Grave Key (tombstone)
Grave Key

The Soulbound enchantment's description says it preserves the item on death.[4]
Compatibility on death
- Cosmetic armor is kept when you die (compatibility.keep_cosmetic_armor is true).[6]
- Potion effects stay on you after returning from the conquered End (compatibility.preserve_effects_on_return_end_conquered is true).[6]
- Curios slots are auto-equipped and bundles get default Curios support (compatibility.curio_auto_equip and compatibility.curio_bundle_support are both true).[6]
Abandoned graves and commands
Lootable abandoned graves can be found on the Overworld surface or in the ocean. They come in 5 colors, and their loot is configurable in the mod's loottables config folder.[1]
There's also an in-game config screen, opened with the /tbgui command or a customizable keybind. The mod page lists commands including TBTeleport, TBShowLastGrave, TBRestoreInventory, TBRecovery and TBKnowledge.[1]
How do you progress through Corail Tombstone?
4 parts
The sources I have for Corail Tombstone in this pack are its recipes, so that is how I've laid out progression: groups of crafts, from the simple ones to the more involved ones. Nearly everything starts from Grave Dust, and the pack has changed a lot of these recipes from the mod's defaults. Each recipe block below is the exact in-pack version.[3]
Basic crafts
These are the small utility items. The Grave Plate, Bone Needle, Strange Scroll and Ankh Of Pray all have recipes the pack has changed, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[3]

Marble and decorative graves
The pack changed the Dark Marble recipe, while White Marble still uses the mod's own recipe. Marble is also the base for the decorative graves, and the pack changed those recipes as well.[3]
The Strange Tablet is a pack-changed recipe built around marble.[3]

Dark and white marble also come as slabs, stairs and walls. The slab crafting recipes were changed by the pack, while the stairs, the walls and the stonecutting versions use the mod's defaults.[3]
For decorations, the dark and white marble versions cover the same set: Decorative Tombstone, Decorative Grave Normal, Decorative Grave Simple, Decorative Grave Original, Decorative Grave Cross and Decorative Subaraki Grave. All of these recipes are pack-changed. Here is an example:[3]

How does Corail Tombstone work with other mods?
1 part
Corail Tombstone's project page says the mod offers many compatibilities with other mods. In this pack, the connection the recipes confirm is the Voodoo Poppet, and it's a fun one.[1][3]
Voodoo Poppet and Dead Bush
The pack changed the Voodoo Poppet recipe so it uses Dead Bush, an item from the tfc namespace. It also uses Grave Dust from this mod, plus items from the leather and string tags.[3]

Which Corail Tombstone config options matter?
4 parts
Tombstone has a huge number of options, but only a handful are changed from the mod's defaults in this pack. These are the ones that actually change how dying feels, so they're the ones worth knowing.[6][7]
What the pack changed from the default
- player_death.decay_time is 60 in this pack. It's the number of minutes before a grave is unlocked to anyone. The mod default is -1, which disables it, so here your grave becomes open to other players after an hour.[7]
- allowedMagicItems.allow_lost_tablet is false in this pack, while the mod default is true. The Lost Tablet is switched off.[7]
- decorative_grave.allow_grave_gardian is false in this pack, while the mod default is true. The merchant Grave Guardian is disabled.[6]
- player_death.restore_effects_on_death is false in this pack, while the mod default is true. Your beneficial potion effects are not restored after you die.[6]
- recovery.backup_on_death is true in this pack (the mod default is false), so players are backed up when they die. recovery.recovery_player_timer is 19 minutes between automatic backups, compared with a default of 40, and recovery.recovery_player_max_saves keeps 15 backups per player.[6]
- enchantments.soulbound_enchanting_table is true in this pack, while the mod default is false. Soulbound can show up at the enchanting table here.[7]
- enchantments.frostbite_combining_fire_aspect is true in this pack, while the mod default is false. Frostbite can be combined with Fire Aspect.[7]
Left at the default
- player_death.xp_loss is 80, which matches the mod default. It's the percentage of experience lost on death.[7]
- player_death.chance_loss_on_death and player_death.percent_loss_on_death are both 0, and player_death.knowledge_loss is 0, so the options for losing items or Knowledge of Death on death are not turned on.[6]
- The teleport command cooldowns general.cooldown_teleport_death, general.cooldown_teleport_bind and general.cooldown_request_teleport are all -1, the default.[6]
- general.ghostly_shape_duration is 120 seconds, the same as the default. Tablets use magic_item.tablet_max_use = 3 and magic_item.tablet_cooldown = 300 seconds.[7]
Modpack-specific lists
loot.unhandled_tameable_entities lists the Vibranium Dragon, Unobtainium Dragon and Allthemodium Dragon, so they can't be found as loot in a Familiar Receptacle. general.unhandled_beneficial_effects holds several modded effects from other mods (Astral Sorcery's time freeze and a set of Potions Master metal effects), which certain Tombstone features can't use. general.unhandled_harmful_effects lists nausea.[6]
This pack sets a graveless area through player_death.no_grave_location, with the entry "0, -300, 0, minecraft:overworld, 20". The config file labels this option Graveless Areas.[6]
Client-side look
Some client options also differ from the defaults. client.fog_color is 16,777,215, where the listed default is 125,656, and client.particle_casting_color is 14,937,088, also against a listed default of 125,656. These only change colors you see on your own screen, and you can edit them to suit your taste.[5]
