What is Building Gadgets 2?
2 parts
Building Gadgets 2 adds a set of tools that make big building jobs quick: building many blocks at once, swapping materials, copying or moving whole structures, and clearing out space. This pack includes version 1.3.9.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
It's for anyone who is tired of placing blocks one at a time. The gadgets need Forge Energy (FE) for most of their functions, so you'll want a way to charge them. Hold the settings key (default 'g') to open a gadget's settings menu.[7][8]
The gadgets
- Building Gadget places lots of blocks at once. You Shift right-click a block to pick what to build with, and its default mode is Build to Me.[2]
- Exchanging Gadget swaps one set of blocks for another. It can't replace air, so use the Building Gadget for that. Its default mode is Surface.[6]
- Copy Paste Gadget copies a structure between opposing corners and pastes it somewhere else, with a ghostly preview before you commit.[3]
- Cut Paste Gadget moves a structure, including chest contents and block configurations. It holds only one structure at a time and has no undo.[4][9]
- Destruction Gadget clears a large area. The removed blocks are voided, but you can undo if you make a mistake.[5]
Undo remembers the last 10 actions a gadget made. You can also bind a gadget to an inventory, or to an Applied Energistics 2 system through its wireless access point, so it pulls items from there.[9][10]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack's quest book has a Building Gadgets quest in the Building Tips chapter, "Building Gadgets" quest, which comes after the Paxel quest. A second one, "Building Gadgets" quest, sits in the Tips and Tricks chapter and mentions diamonds as part of making the gadgets. Either quest is completed by getting any of the gadgets listed above. Both quests also point out that you can link the gadgets to an AE2 network by putting them in a Wireless Access Point.[8][11]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here. Check the Building Tips and Tips and Tricks quest chapters in your quest book for how the pack presents it.
How do you get started with Building Gadgets 2?
5 parts
Building Gadgets 2 gives you tools that place, swap, copy and clear huge numbers of blocks at once. Every gadget runs on Forge Energy (FE), and you open each gadget's settings menu by holding the settings key, which is G by default. Many mods can charge items with FE, so make sure you have some way to charge your gadgets before you start.[7][8]
Start with the Building Gadget
Make the Building Gadget first. It's the one you'll use most. This pack adds its own recipe for it, so follow the one below.[12]

Give it some energy, then shift right-click a block to choose what to build with. The default mode is Build to Me, and you'll see a ghostly preview of the blocks. A red overlay means you're missing items or energy. Right click to place. Blocks you don't have items for are skipped, and you can undo a mistake.[2]
Add the Exchanging Gadget
The Exchanging Gadget swaps one set of blocks for another, which is great for changing a wall's material. It can't replace air, so keep the Building Gadget for that. You can also enchant it with silk touch, otherwise grass returns dirt.[6]

Copy structures and save them
The Copy Paste Gadget replicates structures. In copy mode, right click one corner and shift right-click the opposite corner. Then switch to paste mode, check the preview and right click to place it. The items needed are taken from your inventory.[3]

Quests and AE2
The pack has two quests called "Building Gadgets" quest and "Building Gadgets" quest. Either one completes when you have any of the gadgets. They also note that you can link a gadget to an AE2 network by putting it into a Wireless Access Point.[8][11]
How does Building Gadgets 2 work?
10 parts
Building Gadgets 2 is a small set of tools that all run on Forge Energy (FE). Before you try anything below, charge your gadget with any mod that can charge items. Each gadget also has its own settings menu, which you open by holding the settings key (default 'g'). Most of the mechanics here live in that menu.[7]
Getting the gadgets
The pack handles the Building Gadget differently from the other gadgets, so check its recipe even if you know the mod. The pack adds its own recipe for the Building Gadget.[12]

Building and exchanging
With the Building Gadget, first make sure it has energy. Then shift right-click a block to choose what to build with. Aim at a block and you'll see a ghostly preview of what will be placed. Blocks you lack the items or energy for get a red overlay. Right-click to build. Items come out of your inventory, and any block you don't have the item for is skipped.[2]
The Exchanging Gadget works the same way, but it swaps existing blocks for your chosen block. It cannot replace air, so use the Building Gadget for that. The items from the removed blocks are returned to you. You can enchant the gadget with silk touch, and without it grass returns dirt, for example.[6]
Hold the settings key to pick a mode. The Building Gadget defaults to Build to Me and the Exchanging Gadget defaults to Surface.[2][6]
Modes and range
Building and exchanging both have a range setting. Each mode treats it a little differently, but it generally describes an area. In Horizontal Row, a range of 3 means 3 blocks total, 1 on each side of the block you're looking at. For walls, a range of 3 builds a 3x3 wall. Even numbers are rounded, or change the wall's height slightly.[14]
- Build to Me builds a row from the block face you're looking at to you, horizontal or vertical depending on the face. It ignores range, and 'place on top' makes it build to your head instead of your feet.[15]
- Grid places blocks in a grid, which is handy for torches. A bigger range spreads the blocks further apart until the area itself grows. It also works as an exchanger mode.[16]
- Horizontal Row builds away from you in the direction you're looking, which is good for bridges. On the exchanger it swaps blocks to the left and right of your view.[17]
- Horizontal Wall builds an area above the block you're looking at (or toward you if you're looking at a side) when 'place on top' is on. With it off, the wall builds around the block.[18]
- Vertical Wall builds up or down from the top or bottom of a block, or around it if you're looking at a side.[19]
- Vertical Column builds up or down from the top or bottom of a block, or both up and down around a side. It's available on both the building and exchanging gadgets.[20]
- Surface extends the set of blocks you're looking at. Fuzzy mode lets it target any blocks, or only blocks matching the one you're looking at. On the exchanger, connected mode only swaps blocks connected to the ones you're looking at.[21]
- Stairs builds up and away from you or up and towards you, depending on whether you're above or below the block. The in-game guide itself calls this mode confusing.[22]
'Place on top' behaves a bit differently in each mode, and in some modes it does nothing. Anchor locks in the block you're looking at so you can move around freely. You can still right-click to build while anchored. A range change may not apply until you remove and replace the anchor.[23][24]
Undo
Undo reverses the last task your gadget did and remembers the last 10 actions. You can reach it by hotkey or from the settings menu. Undoing an exchange needs the original items in your inventory. If you turned grass into stone bricks, you need grass to swap it back. The Cut Paste Gadget has no undo at all.[6][9]
Destruction
The Destruction Gadget clears a large area, and the cleared blocks are voided. Set the area in the settings menu. It's relative to the block and face you're looking at, so if you aim at a top face, 'up' follows your screen. Right-click to void the highlighted blocks. Undo puts the blocks back without taking anything from your inventory.[5]
Copy, cut and paste
For the Copy Paste Gadget, set 'copy' mode in the settings menu. Right-click one corner of the structure and shift-right-click the opposite corner. A green outline appears if you got it right. Switch to 'paste' mode to see a ghostly preview, with the first block you clicked as the starting point. Right-click to place it. Items are taken from your inventory, and blocks you lack items for are skipped.[3]
The settings menu also has a 'material list', a scrollable and sortable list of the items you have or are missing. The Adjust Placement window lets you nudge the start and end blocks with plus and minus buttons, or switch to 'absolute' coordinates and type in world coordinates. Paste mode has a similar window for the starting block's position. Rotate turns a copy or cut paste around its starting point.[3][25]
The Cut Paste Gadget works like the copy gadget, but in 'cut' mode the outline is red. Nothing is removed until you click the 'cut' button in the settings menu. Pasting needs no items, because it reuses the blocks you removed. All block-entity data moves with the structure, including chest contents and block configurations.[4]
Paste Replace
Paste Replace is only available on the cut paste and copy paste gadgets. When it's off, pastes only overwrite blocks you could normally overwrite, like water and tall grass. That can still 'lose' blocks with the Cut Paste Gadget. When it's on, the paste replaces any block in the world, air included, which is great for building a house into a mountain. Replaced blocks are voided and drop nothing.[26]
Template Manager
The Template Manager saves structures from the Copy Paste Gadget. Put the gadget in the top slot and paper in the bottom slot, then click 'Save' to turn the paper into a template. A render of the structure appears that you can pan, spin and zoom. Click 'load' to copy a template's structure back to the gadget. The 'Render' button toggles a Materials Mode that lists the needed materials. Templates can be named, and the name shows on the item.[13]
To share a structure outside the game, click 'copy' to put a json string on your clipboard. A friend copies that string, clicks 'paste' in the same GUI, and gets your structure, as long as there's paper in the bottom slot.[13]
Inventories and fluids
Bind Inventory lets a gadget pull from and insert into an inventory. Enable 'bind inventory' in the gadget's settings menu, then shift-right-click a chest or other inventory. A blue box confirms the bind. Shift-right-click a non-inventory block, like grass, to disconnect. You can also bind to an Applied Energistics 2 system through its wireless access point, and the gadget then has unlimited range.[10]
Gadgets can handle fluids too. Raytrace Fluids must be on to select a fluid with shift-right-click. With it on, exchangers can swap out fluids and builders can build on top of fluids. With it off, gadgets ignore fluids and build on the blocks behind them. To place fluids you need a bucket holding that fluid, or a tank from a mod like Mekanism, which fluids are taken from and put into. The copy paste gadget handles fluids as well.[27][28]
Animations
Each gadget can have its own build animation, defaulting to 'grow'. Animations are cosmetic only and don't change how the gadgets work.[29]
Unverified The sources don't give the FE capacity of each gadget or the energy cost per block, and the pack has no config files for this mod. Check those numbers in-game before relying on them.
How do you progress through Building Gadgets 2?
3 parts
Building Gadgets 2 doesn't climb a tier ladder in this pack. Each gadget has its own recipe, and the pack's quests treat them as one group: you complete the quest by getting any one of the Building Gadget, Exchanging Gadget, Copy Paste Gadget, Cut Paste Gadget or Destruction Gadget.[8][11][12]
What the quests tell you
- "Building Gadgets" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter and comes after the Paxel quest. It tells you every gadget needs energy and has a menu that opens with G by default.[8]
- "Building Gadgets" quest is in the Tips and Tricks chapter. It pitches the gadgets as a way to build bigger bases and to clear space with the Destruction Gadget.[11]
Both quests also mention that you can link a gadget to an AE2 network by putting it into a Wireless Access Point. The in-game guide adds that a gadget bound to an AE2 system has unlimited range.[8][10][11]
The gadgets and their recipes
The Building Gadget is the only one here with a recipe added by the pack. The others use the mod's own recipes. Use the recipe boxes below rather than assuming mod defaults.[12]
The Building Gadget places lots of blocks at once. Shift right-click a block to pick what to build with, choose a mode from the settings menu, and right-click to place what the preview shows. Blocks you don't have items for are skipped.[2]

The Exchanging Gadget swaps one set of blocks for another, but it can't replace air. You can enchant it with silk touch, and undoing an exchange requires you to still have the needed items.[6]

How does Building Gadgets 2 work with other mods?
3 parts
Building Gadgets 2 connects to other mods in this pack in a few ways. The quests point you to Applied Energistics 2 (AE2), and the pack adds its own crafting recipe for the Building Gadget.[8][10][11][12]
Crafting the Building Gadget
The pack adds its own recipe for the Building Gadget with a KubeJS script. It uses items from other mods, including tag-based slots that accept any matching item. Check the recipe below before you start gathering materials.[12]

| any iron ingot | any redstone dust | any iron ingot |
| any iron ingot | any allthemodium nugget | any iron ingot |
Recipe id: kubejs:kjs/buildinggadgets2_gadget_building
This recipe is added by the pack through a KubeJS shaped recipe.
The "Tips and Tricks" quest "Building Gadgets" quest presents the gadgets as something diamonds let you make. It recommends them for building bigger bases and for clearing space with the Destruction Gadget.[11]
The "Building Tips" chapter has its own quest, "Building Gadgets" quest, which comes after the Paxel quest. Its task accepts the Building Gadget, Exchanging Gadget, Copy Paste Gadget, Cut Paste Gadget or Destruction Gadget. The quest text says each gadget needs energy and has a menu opened with G by default.[8]
Applied Energistics 2
Both gadget quests, "Building Gadgets" quest and "Building Gadgets" quest, tell you that you can link the gadgets to an AE2 network by putting a gadget into a Wireless Access Point.[8][11]
The mod's own guide explains the other side of it. Enable bind inventory mode in the gadget's settings menu, then connect to the wireless access point of your AE2 system. The gadget then has unlimited range, so you don't need range upgrades.[10]
Energy and fluids
Every gadget needs Forge Energy (FE) for most of its functions. The mod's guide says many mods add support for charging items with FE, and it points to a separate mod called Charging Gadgets if you have none of them.[7]
For fluids, you need a bucket holding the right fluid to place it in the world. The mod's guide also says tanks from other mods, such as Mekanism, can be used.[27]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Building Gadgets 2?
2 parts
Building Gadgets 2 shows up in two quest chapters in the pack. Both quests are named Building Gadgets, and both are satisfied by owning any one of the mod's gadgets, so you don't need to craft every type.[8][11]
Building Tips
In the Building Tips chapter, the quest "Building Gadgets" quest comes after the Paxel quest. It asks you to get any one of these: the Building Gadget, Exchanging Gadget, Copy Paste Gadget, Cut Paste Gadget or Destruction Gadget.[8]
The quest text gives you a few handy pointers. Each gadget needs Energy to work, and each has a menu that opens with G by default. You can also link a gadget to an AE2 network by putting it into a Wireless Access Point.[8]
Tips and Tricks
The Tips and Tricks chapter has a second quest, "Building Gadgets" quest, with the same any-one-gadget task. No prerequisite quest is listed for it. Its text says diamonds let you create these gadgets, and it describes them as great for building bigger bases. It also points out that the Destruction Gadget is useful for clearing out space.[11]
This quest repeats the tip about linking a gadget to an AE2 network by putting it into a Wireless Access Point.[11]
