What is Aquaculture 2?

2 parts

Aquaculture 2 expands fishing with over 30 new fish, and each biome type, modded biomes included, gets its own catches. You can reel them in with a rod or find them swimming around in rivers, ponds and the ocean. Any vanilla or modded rod works for catching them.[1]

The mod also adds its own rods. These let you equip hooks and bait for extra functionality, and you can customize them further with fishing line and bobbers. You apply those modifiers in the Tackle Box, which also stores spare hooks, bait, line and bobbers.[1]

Your catch can be turned into fish fillets. The amount depends on the fish, or on its weight if that config option is enabled. Fishing can also give you extra loot, including the Neptunium tools and armor. Whether that loot drops is configurable.[1]

Who it's for

If you like a relaxed side activity that feeds you and drops some surprises, this mod is for you. It suits players who want fishing to be more than a vanilla rod and a patch of water.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack ships Aquaculture 2 version 2.7.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge.[2]

The quest book has a short rod chain in the food_and_farming chapter. You start with the Iron Fishing Rod quest a quest in "?". Next comes the Golden Fishing Rod quest a quest in "?", then the Diamond Fishing Rod quest a quest in "?". The chain ends with the Neptunium Fishing Rod quest a quest in "?".[3]

Unverified The sources don't show Aquaculture 2 on the ATM Star quest path, and the pack has no in-jar guidebook for it, so there is no confirmed ATM Star progression to describe here.

How do you get started with Aquaculture 2?

5 parts

Aquaculture 2 is all about fishing, and you can start right away. Any vanilla or modded rod will catch its fish, and the mod's own rods add slots for hooks, bait, line and bobbers. Here's the order I'd go in.[1]

Make a hook first

Start with the Iron Hook. Most of the other hooks in this pack are crafted from it, and on its own it has a 20% chance to not use durability.[4][5]

Craft your first Aquaculture rod

Next comes the Iron Fishing Rod. The pack's quest chapter "food_and_farming" lines up the rods in order: a quest in "?" asks for the iron rod, then a quest in "?" the Golden Fishing Rod, then a quest in "?" the Diamond Fishing Rod, and finally a quest in "?" the Neptunium Fishing Rod. That makes a handy upgrade path to follow.[3]

Get a Tackle Box

Modifiers and customization items are applied in the Tackle Box. It also stores extra hooks, bait, line and bobbers, so it keeps your rod setup in one place.[1]

Fishing line and bobbers are the customization pieces for your rod, so craft a Fishing Line and a Bobber to go with it.[1][4]

Turn your catch into food

Fish you catch can be turned into fish fillets, and how many you get depends on the fish. The pack also has fillet knives in several tiers, and the Neptunium Fillet Knife increases the amount of fillets you get. Raw fillets can then be cooked into Cooked Fish Fillet in a furnace, a smoker or over a campfire.[1][4][5]

Campfire Cooking

Recipe id: aquaculture:cooked_fish_fillet_from_campfire

Try some hook upgrades

Tip: Neptunium tools and armor can turn up as fishing loot, and the mod lists that as configurable. The Neptunium Fishing Rod makes fish more likely to bite, so it's worth chasing once you've worked through the rod quests.[1][3][4][5]

How does Aquaculture 2 work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Aquaculture 2 doesn't have machines, power or pipes. Everything revolves around your fishing gear: the rod, the hook, the line and the bobber, plus what you do with the catch afterwards. Once you know how those pieces fit together, the whole mod clicks.[1]

Rods, tackle and the Tackle Box

The mod adds over 30 new fish, and you can catch them with any rod, modded or vanilla. Its own rods are the better choice, though, because they let you equip hooks and bait for extra functionality. Fishing line and bobbers let you customize the rod further.[1]

You apply modifiers and customization items in the Tackle Box. It also stores spare hooks, bait, line and bobbers, so it works as your fishing inventory.[1]

The rods in this pack are the Iron Fishing Rod, the Golden Fishing Rod, the Diamond Fishing Rod and the Neptunium Fishing Rod.[6]

Hooks

Hooks give your rod extra functionality. The Iron Hook is the base for several other hooks in this pack, such as the Gold Hook, Diamond Hook, Heavy Hook, Light Hook and Double Hook.[1][6]

The mod's tooltips describe what these hooks do:[5]

  • Iron Hook: 20% chance to not use durability.[5]
  • Diamond Hook: 50% chance to not use durability.[5]
  • Quartz hook: 30% chance to not use durability.[5]
  • Nether star hook: 50% chance to not use durability and increased luck.[5]
  • Double Hook: a chance to catch two things.[5]
  • Redstone hook and soul sand hook: more time to reel in a fish.[5]
  • Note hook: plays an alert when a fish is approaching.[5]

The tooltips also list a double obsidian hook and an obsidian note hook. They carry the same descriptions as the Double Hook and the note hook.[5]

Fish, fillets and loot

You can catch fish with a rod or find them swimming in the wild. Each biome type, modded biomes included, has its own fish. You can turn a caught fish into fillets, and the number of fillets depends on the fish, or on its weight if that config option is enabled. Fishing also turns up other loot, such as a Tin Can, a Message in a Bottle you right-click to read, and Neptune's Bounty.[1]

Cutting fish needs a fillet knife. The pack has the Iron Fillet Knife, Gold Fillet Knife, Diamond Fillet Knife and Neptunium Fillet Knife. The Neptunium version increases the amount of fillets you get.[5][6]

Neptunium gear

You can find Neptunium tools and armor as fishing loot, and this is configurable. The Neptunium Nugget, Neptunium Ingot and Neptunium Block convert into one another in the crafting grid.[1][6]

Unverified Whether this pack enables the weight-based fillet option, and how often Neptunium gear drops as fishing loot, are config settings. No config files for this mod were available, so the sources here do not show those values.

How do you progress through Aquaculture 2?

4 parts

The pack's quest line for Aquaculture 2 is a fishing rod ladder. It sits in the Food and Farming chapter and walks you through four rods, one tier at a time. Each quest asks you to hold the rod itself, so there are no side tasks to track.[3]

The quest path

  1. Get the Iron Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?". It unlocks after another quest in the same chapter.[3]
  2. Get the Golden Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?".[3]
  3. Get the Diamond Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?".[3]
  4. Get the Neptunium Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?". This is the last rod in the chain.[3]

The pack's quest file gives these quests no titles, so you'll recognise them by the rod they ask for. Aquaculture 2 is not on the ATM Star quest path, so you can take this ladder at your own pace.[3]

Crafting each rod

All four rods use the same shaped layout in this pack: a material, a wooden rod and string. Only the material changes from tier to tier. These are the exact in-pack recipes.[4]

Getting Neptunium

The final rod needs a Neptunium Ingot. In this pack you can make one from nine-style compression the usual way: a Neptunium Nugget recipe feeds the ingot, and a Neptunium Block can be turned back into ingots.[4]

Neptunium IngotMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

9 × Neptunium Nugget

Recipe id: aquaculture:neptunium_ingot_from_nuggets

There is also a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe that outputs a Neptunium Nugget along with wax. The dump doesn't show its input, so check it in-game before you plan around it.[4]

Blasting works as a recycling route. Neptunium tools, armor, the bow, the fillet knife and the fishing rod can all be blasted back into a Neptunium Ingot.[4]

Unverified How you first find raw Neptunium in the world (for example from fishing or loot) is not confirmed by the pack files used for this guide.

Beyond the rods

Once you hit the Neptunium tier, the same ingot also crafts a full gear set: Neptunium Pickaxe, Neptunium Axe, Neptunium Shovel, Neptunium Hoe, Neptunium Sword, Neptunium Bow and the armor pieces from Neptunium Helmet to Neptunium Boots. There is also a Neptunium Fillet Knife and Neptune's Bounty.[4]

Fillet knives follow their own tier ladder: Wooden Fillet Knife, Stone Fillet Knife, Iron Fillet Knife, Gold Fillet Knife, Diamond Fillet Knife and then Neptunium. The quests don't cover them, so they're optional.[4]

Hooks are a separate upgrade path. The Iron Hook is the base, and the Gold Hook, Heavy Hook, Light Hook, Redstone Hook, Note Hook, Double Hook and Diamond Hook all build on it. The top hook, the Nether Star Hook, builds on the Diamond Hook.[4]

How does Aquaculture 2 work with other mods?

2 parts

Aquaculture 2 has very few crossovers with other mods in this pack. The recipe and quest data only shows one recipe and one quest chain that touch it, so this section is short.[3][4]

Productive Bees: Neptunium from the centrifuge

The one real crossover is with Productive Bees. Its centrifuge has a recipe in the pack that gives you Neptunium Nugget along with Wax. So you don't have to wait for Neptunium to drop while fishing, because a bee setup can supply it too.[4]

Centrifuge (productivebees)

    Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/aquaculture/honeycomb_neptunium

Centrifuge recipe that outputs a Neptunium Nugget and Wax.

Unverified The recipe dump lists no item inputs for this centrifuge recipe, and the sources don't say how often the nugget is produced. Check the recipe block above for the exact in-pack input.

    Quests: the fishing rod chain

Aquaculture's rods also show up in the pack's questbook. Four quests in the food_and_farming chapter each ask you to obtain one rod, and they unlock one after another.[3]

    1. a quest in "?" asks for the Iron Fishing Rod.[3]
    2. a quest in "?" comes next and asks for the Golden Fishing Rod.[3]
    3. a quest in "?" follows with the Diamond Fishing Rod.[3]
    4. a quest in "?" finishes the chain with the Neptunium Fishing Rod.[3]

The first quest in that chain unlocks after another quest in the same chapter, so it isn't the start of the chapter. The sources only show these four quests as asking for Aquaculture items alone, so there are no other mod items involved in them.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Aquaculture 2?

In this pack, Aquaculture 2 shows up in a single quest chapter, food_and_farming. It's a short chain of four quests, and each one asks you to obtain a fishing rod from the mod.[3]

The chain hangs off an earlier quest in the same chapter, so you need to finish that one first. After that, the four quests unlock one after another, in the order below.[3]

    1. a quest in "?" asks you to obtain the Iron Fishing Rod. It's the entry point to the chain.[3]
    2. a quest in "?" unlocks after the iron rod quest. It asks for the Golden Fishing Rod.[3]
    3. a quest in "?" unlocks after the gold rod quest. It asks for the Diamond Fishing Rod.[3]
    4. a quest in "?" unlocks after the diamond rod quest. It asks for the Neptunium Fishing Rod, the last step in the chain.[3]

So the quests walk you up the rod tiers one at a time: iron, gold, diamond, then neptunium. You can't skip ahead, because each quest needs the one before it.[3]

Unverified The quest titles are blank in the pack files, and the data I have doesn't show any rewards for these four quests, so I can't say what you get for finishing them.

Which Aquaculture 2 config options matter?

I can't show you the exact config values this pack uses for Aquaculture 2, because the pack's config files for this mod weren't available to me. So I can't tell you which options the pack changed from the mod defaults, and I won't guess.[1]

The mod's project page does point to two things that can be configured. The number of fish fillets you get from a fish normally depends on the fish type, but it can depend on the fish's weight if that config option is enabled.[1]

The second is the fabled Neptunium tools and armor, which you can get as fishing loot. The project page says this loot is configurable.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack enables weight-based fillet amounts, and whether it changes the Neptunium loot settings, is unconfirmed. The option names and values are also unconfirmed. Check the mod's config file in your own instance before you rely on either behavior.
