What is Aquaculture 2?

1 part

Aquaculture 2 turns vanilla fishing into a real hobby. It adds over 30 new fish that you can catch with a rod or find swimming in the wild, and any rod works, modded or vanilla. Each biome type has its own fish, and that includes modded biomes, so rivers, ponds and oceans all feel a bit more alive.[1]

The mod also adds its own series of fishing rods. On these you can fit hooks and bait for extra functionality, plus custom fishing line and bobbers to make the rod your own. You apply all of these in the Tackle Box, which also stores your spare hooks, bait, line and bobbers.[1]

Your catches aren't just trophies. You can turn fish into fish fillets, and how many you get depends on the fish. Fishing can also pull up extra loot such as Driftwood, Tin Cans, Messages in a Bottle, Lockboxes, Treasure Chests and Neptune's Bounty. With luck you can even fish up the fabled Neptunium tools and armor, although the mod notes that this loot is configurable.[1]

If you like a relaxed side activity that still pays off with gear, this mod is for you. All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Aquaculture 2 version 2.7.14, and the mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[1][2]

Where it fits in the pack

The Food and Farming quest chapter walks you up the rod ladder, one quest per upgrade.[3]

  1. Start with the Iron Fishing Rod in a quest in "?".[3]
  2. Upgrade to the Golden Fishing Rod in a quest in "?".[3]
  3. Move on to the Diamond Fishing Rod in a quest in "?".[3]
  4. Finish with the Neptunium Fishing Rod in a quest in "?".[3]

Neptunium also appears in the gear chapters. In the Basic Tools chapter, the Neptunium Pickaxe is one of several pickaxes that complete a quest in "?", and the Neptunium Sword has its own quest, a quest in "?".[4]

In the Basic Armor chapter, a quest in "?" asks for the full Neptunium set: the Neptunium Helmet, Neptunium Chestplate, Neptunium Leggings and Neptunium Boots.[5]

How do you get started with Aquaculture 2?

5 parts

Aquaculture 2 turns fishing into a real progression path. It adds over 30 new fish that depend on the biome, including modded biomes. You can catch them with any rod, modded or vanilla, or find them swimming in the wild. The mod's own rods go further, because you can equip hooks and bait on them for extra effects.[1]

Step 1: Your first rod

Start with the Iron Fishing Rod. It's the first Aquaculture quest in the pack's food and farming chapter, a quest in "?", and it's the entry point to the whole rod line. It's also a rod that accepts hooks and bait, which a vanilla rod doesn't.[1][3]

Step 2: Your first hook

Next, make an Iron Hook. It gives your rod a 20% chance to not use durability. More importantly, it's the base part for almost every other hook in this pack, from the Double Hook to the Note Hook and Redstone Hook.[6][7]

  • The Double Hook gives you a chance to catch two things.[7]
  • The Note Hook plays an alert when a fish is approaching, which helps a lot while you're AFK-watching the water.[7]
  • The Redstone Hook increases how long you have to reel in a fish.[7]

Step 3: The Tackle Box

The Tackle Box is where you apply modifiers and customization items to your rod. It also stores spare hooks, bait, line and bobbers. Once you have it, you can personalize your rod with Fishing Line and a Bobber.[1]

Step 4: Turning fish into food

Caught fish can be turned into fish fillets, and how many you get depends on the fish. The mod has a whole line of fillet knives, from the Wooden Fillet Knife up to the Neptunium Fillet Knife, which increases the amount of fillets you get.[1][6][7]

Unverified The sources don't confirm exactly how filleting works, for example whether you need a fillet knife to turn fish into fillets. Check the in-game tooltips or JEI to be sure. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Where to go next

The pack's quests walk you up the rod tiers in order. After the iron rod comes the Golden Fishing Rod in a quest in "?", then the Diamond Fishing Rod in a quest in "?", and finally the Neptunium Fishing Rod in a quest in "?".[3]

Fishing can also pull up special loot, including the fabled Neptunium tools and armor, and this drop is configurable. Neptunium gear also shows up in the pack's tool and armor quests: a quest in "?" for the Neptunium Sword, a quest in "?" accepts the Neptunium Pickaxe, and a quest in "?" asks for the full armor set.[1][4][5]

Tip: Neptunium armor is worth chasing if you spend time underwater. The chestplate lets you breathe underwater, the helmet improves underwater vision, the leggings make you weightless underwater and the boots increase your swim speed.[7]

How does Aquaculture 2 work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Aquaculture 2 doesn't have machines, power or pipes. Everything revolves around your fishing gear: the rod, the hook, the line and the bobber, plus what you do with the catch afterwards. Once you know how those pieces fit together, the whole mod clicks.[1]

Rods, tackle and the Tackle Box

The mod adds over 30 new fish, and you can catch them with any rod, modded or vanilla. Its own rods are the better choice, though, because they let you equip hooks and bait for extra functionality. Fishing line and bobbers let you customize the rod further.[1]

You apply modifiers and customization items in the Tackle Box. It also stores spare hooks, bait, line and bobbers, so it works as your fishing inventory.[1]

The rods in this pack are the Iron Fishing Rod, the Golden Fishing Rod, the Diamond Fishing Rod and the Neptunium Fishing Rod.[8]

The mod's tooltips describe what these hooks do:[7]

  • Iron Hook: 20% chance to not use durability.[7]
  • Diamond Hook: 50% chance to not use durability.[7]
  • Quartz hook: 30% chance to not use durability.[7]
  • Nether star hook: 50% chance to not use durability and increased luck.[7]
  • Double Hook: a chance to catch two things.[7]
  • Redstone hook and soul sand hook: more time to reel in a fish.[7]
  • Note hook: plays an alert when a fish is approaching.[7]

The tooltips also list a double obsidian hook and an obsidian note hook. They carry the same descriptions as the Double Hook and the note hook.[7]

Fish, fillets and loot

You can catch fish with a rod or find them swimming in the wild. Each biome type, modded biomes included, has its own fish. You can turn a caught fish into fillets, and the number of fillets depends on the fish, or on its weight if that config option is enabled. Fishing also turns up other loot, such as a Tin Can, a Message in a Bottle you right-click to read, and Neptune's Bounty.[1]

Cutting fish needs a fillet knife. The pack has the Iron Fillet Knife, Gold Fillet Knife, Diamond Fillet Knife and Neptunium Fillet Knife. The Neptunium version increases the amount of fillets you get.[7][8]

Neptunium gear

You can find Neptunium tools and armor as fishing loot, and this is configurable. The Neptunium Nugget, Neptunium Ingot and Neptunium Block convert into one another in the crafting grid.[1][8]

How do you progress through Aquaculture 2?

5 parts

Aquaculture 2's gear in this pack climbs a simple material ladder: iron, then gold, then diamond, and finally neptunium at the top. The quest book follows that exact order for the fishing rods, so if you're wondering what to craft next, the quests have you covered.[3]

Fishing rod tiers

The rod quests live in the food and farming chapter as a straight chain. Each quest unlocks after the previous one, so you work your way up one rod at a time.[3]

  1. Start with the Iron Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?".[3]
  2. Next, craft the Golden Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?".[3]
  3. Then step up to the Diamond Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?".[3]
  4. Finish the chain with the Neptunium Fishing Rod for quest a quest in "?".[3]

Every rod is a regular shaped crafting-table recipe that comes straight from the mod. Between tiers, only the tier material changes, so once you've made one rod, the rest will feel familiar.[6]

Neptunium: the top tier

Neptunium Ingot is the material that caps off the ladder. Besides the rod, it goes into a full toolset, a full armor set, the Neptunium Bow, the Neptunium Fillet Knife and Neptune's Bounty.[3][6]

You can combine Neptunium Nugget into ingots. You can also store ingots as a Neptunium Block and break the block back down whenever you need them.[6]

If you're into bees, this pack also has a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe for neptunium honeycomb that gives you Neptunium Nuggets along with wax.[6]

    Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/aquaculture/honeycomb_neptunium

Tip: Don't throw away worn-out neptunium gear! Tools, armor, the bow, the fillet knife and the rod can all go into a blast furnace to get a Neptunium Ingot back.[6]

Unverified The pack files provided don't show where you first find neptunium in the world, for example as fishing loot, so that part of the path is unconfirmed here.

    Neptunium gear quests

The basic tools chapter has a quest just for the Neptunium Sword, a quest in "?". Quest a quest in "?" accepts the Neptunium Pickaxe, but a pickaxe from one of several other mods also completes it, so neptunium is one option there, not a requirement.[4]

    Fillet knife tiers

Fillet knives have a longer ladder than the rods: Wooden Fillet Knife, Stone Fillet Knife, Iron Fillet Knife, Gold Fillet Knife, Diamond Fillet Knife and finally the Neptunium Fillet Knife. None of the quest chapters provided here ask for a fillet knife, so you can upgrade at your own pace.[3][4][5][6]

This pack adds woodcutting recipes that cut the Wooden Fillet Knife straight from logs and wood blocks. These recipes cover lots of wood types, including modded trees, so you can make your first knife from whatever logs you have on hand.[6]

How does Aquaculture 2 work with other mods?

    3 parts

Aquaculture 2 connects to the rest of the pack in two main ways: recipes from other mods that produce Aquaculture items, and quests that ask you to make Aquaculture gear. Most of the recipe links are extra ways to get a Wooden Fillet Knife. There's also a bee product that gives you Neptunium.[3][4][5][6]

    Neptunium from the centrifuge

There's a centrifuge recipe for a Neptunium honeycomb that outputs a Neptunium Nugget along with Wax. This recipe ships with the mod itself rather than being added by the pack. It's a nice alternative source of Neptunium if fishing isn't giving you any.[6]

    Centrifuge (productivebees)

      Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/aquaculture/honeycomb_neptunium

Unverified Which bee produces the Neptunium honeycomb, and how much it yields, can't be confirmed from the available sources. Check the bee's entry in JEI in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

      Fillet knives from modded wood

The pack adds a large set of sawmill woodcutting recipes that turn modded wood into a Wooden Fillet Knife. Each recipe accepts the log, wood and stripped variants of one tree type. So whatever wood you've got piling up, there's a good chance it can become a knife.[6]

Wooden Fillet KnifeAdded by the pack

      Woodcutting (sawmill)

      Recipe id: sawmill:aquaculture_wooden_fillet_knife_166

One example: the Twilight Oak version.

      Aquaculture in the quest book

The food and farming chapter has a fishing rod progression. You start with a quest in "?" for the Iron Fishing Rod. Next is a quest in "?" for the Golden Fishing Rod, then a quest in "?" for the Diamond Fishing Rod. The chain ends with a quest in "?" for the Neptunium Fishing Rod, and each quest unlocks after the previous one.[3]

Neptunium gear also shows up alongside other mods' gear. In the basic tools chapter, a quest in "?" accepts a Neptunium Pickaxe or one of several pickaxes from other mods. a quest in "?" asks for a Neptunium Sword. Over in the basic armor chapter, a quest in "?" wants the full set: Neptunium Helmet, Neptunium Chestplate, Neptunium Leggings and Neptunium Boots.[4][5]

Tip: Neptunium tools and armor can turn up as fishing loot, and any modded or vanilla rod can catch Aquaculture fish. Modded biomes also get their own fish types, so fishing in this pack's new biomes is worth a try.[1]

Unverified Neptunium fishing loot is configurable in the mod. This pack's setting for it couldn't be confirmed from the available sources.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Aquaculture 2?

      3 parts

Aquaculture 2 shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. The biggest one is a fishing rod progression in the food and farming chapter. The basic tools and basic armor chapters also have quests for its Neptunium gear.[3][4][5]

Food and farming: the fishing rod ladder

This chapter has four quests in a straight chain. Each one asks for the next tier of fishing rod and unlocks only after you finish the one before it. The first rod quest opens after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[3]

      1. a quest in "?": get an Iron Fishing Rod.[3]
      2. a quest in "?": step up to a Golden Fishing Rod.[3]
      3. a quest in "?": next comes a Diamond Fishing Rod.[3]
      4. a quest in "?": finish the line with a Neptunium Fishing Rod.[3]

Basic tools: Neptunium pickaxe and sword

Two quests in the basic tools chapter use Neptunium gear, and both unlock after the same earlier quest in that chapter. You can do them in either order.[4]

Basic armor: the full Neptunium set

In the basic armor chapter, a quest in "?" wants the whole set: Neptunium Helmet, Neptunium Chestplate, Neptunium Leggings and Neptunium Boots. Each piece is its own task, so you need all four to complete the quest.[5]

Tip: The Neptunium Fishing Rod, pickaxe, sword and armor pieces all count toward quests. If you're collecting Neptunium gear, you can tick off quests in three different chapters at once.[3][4][5]

What changed in Aquaculture 2 between versions?

The version history for Aquaculture 2 in this pack is short, and that's because the sources only cover a couple of points in time. Here's what I can confirm.[2][9]

      • Aquaculture 2 was already in the pack as of All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, so it's been a part of the pack from very early on.[2]
      • All the Mods 10 2.42 updated Aquaculture 2 from 2.7.13 to 2.7.14.[9]
      • All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Aquaculture 2 2.7.14, using the file Aquaculture-1.21.1-2.7.14.jar. That means the 2.42 update is still the version you get in this release.[2][9]

Unverified What actually changed between Aquaculture 2 2.7.13 and 2.7.14 is not confirmed. No changelogs for the shipped jars were available, so I can't say whether that update brought fixes, new features or balance changes. Any other pack releases that touched this mod between 2.2 and 4.5 are also unconfirmed.
