What is Immersive Engineering?

2 parts

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machinery. Think BioShock-style industry rather than clinical white and grey cubes. Instead of glowing tubes, power travels through actual hanging cables strung between connectors, not through lanes of blocks.[1]

Many of its machines are multiblocks. The crusher is a big 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels, and the excavator is a resource-hungry 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a bucketwheel. Power generation comes from water wheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The mod uses the Forge Energy API, so it can link up with other tech mods, but it also works fully standalone.[1]

This pack ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

It's for you if you enjoy building big, good-looking machines and running wires across your base, and you don't mind a bit of planning. The mod comes with its own in-game documentation, the Engineer's Manual, so check it whenever a multiblock layout confuses you.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

The pack gives Immersive Engineering its own quest chapter. The first quests ask for the basic tools: the Engineer's Screwdriver (a quest in "?"), the Engineer's Wire Cutters (a quest in "?") and the Engineer's Hammer (a quest in "?"). There's also one for Treated Wood Planks (a quest in "?").[3]

The rest of the chapter branches off those four. The hammer leads to the Blast Brick, the Coke Brick, the Light Engineering Block and the Redstone Engineering Block. The wire cutters lead to wire coils, the Kinetic Dynamo and the Thermoelectric Generator. The screwdriver leads to the Fluid Pipe, Conveyor Belt and storage crates. Several later quests ask for stacks of engineering blocks, scaffolding and fences. That fits the mod's multiblock design, but I can only see part of the chapter, so I can't say what those quests unlock.[3]

Unverified The full quest chapter was cut off in the material provided, so the later quests and their rewards are unconfirmed. This guide does not cover how the mod fits into the wider progression.

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

4 parts

Immersive Engineering has a big quest chapter in this pack, and it opens with four starter items: the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Screwdriver, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and Treated Wood Planks. Most of what follows branches off one of these four, so this is the order I'd follow.[3]

For anything this page doesn't cover, the mod has its own in-game documentation, the Engineer's Manual.[1]

Step by step

  1. Get the Engineer's Hammer first (a quest in "?"). The quests for Blast Brick, Kiln Brick, Coke Brick, the Light Engineering Block and the Redstone Engineering Block all come after it, so it unlocks most of your early building blocks.[3]
  2. Make the brick blocks. The Kiln Brick quest asks for 8 of them, so expect to build more than one. Coke Brick comes next in the chain.[3]
  3. Get Coal Coke (a quest in "?") and a bucket of Creosote Oil (a quest in "?"). Both quests come after the Coke Brick quest.[3]
  4. Make Treated Wood Planks. A later quest asks for them again right after the Creosote Oil quest, so the chapter expects you to have Creosote Oil by then.[3]
  5. Craft the Engineer's Crafting Table (a quest in "?"). Its quest comes after that second Treated Wood quest.[3]

The bricks

Here are the in-pack recipes for the bricks. Kiln Brick and Reinforced Blast Brick also have an extra Create item-application recipe that the pack changed, so you can make them with Create as well as at a crafting table.[4]

Tip: Treated Wood Planks open up several quests in a row: External Heater, Garden Cloche, Electromagnet, Turntable and Charging Station. Once you have some planks, you can pick any of these.[3]

Wires, power and pipes

After the bricks, the wire cutters lead into power. The Kinetic Dynamo (a quest in "?") and the Thermoelectric Generator (a quest in "?") both come after the wire cutters quest. The Water Wheel and Windmill quests come after the Dynamo.[3]

Wire coils (a quest in "?") are another follow-up to the wire cutters, and they unlock connectors, relays, accumulators and transformers. The screwdriver is the start of the logistics branch: fluid pipes, storage crates, barrels and conveyor belts all come after it.[3]

How does Immersive Engineering work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Immersive Engineering plays differently from most tech mods, and the key ideas are simple. It uses the Forge Energy API, but power doesn't travel through lanes of adjacent blocks. You span actual cables between connectors, so your factory ends up with hanging powerlines. Many of the machines are multiblocks, which are big structures you build from several blocks.[1]

The mod's project page says it can be played fully standalone, and that its in-game documentation is the Engineer's Manual, crafted with a book and a lever. When you're unsure how a machine is built, open the manual first. It is the mod's own reference.[1]

Multiblocks

The project page gives two examples of the scale involved. The crusher is a 5x3x3 multiblock with rotating wheels. The excavator is a 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a big rotating bucketwheel, and it is resource intensive to build.[1]

The mod also tracks you forming a few key machines: the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Arc Furnace, the Metal Press and the Diesel Generator. These make good milestones as you progress.[5]

Power

Power generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The mod also has a Kinetic Dynamo and a Diesel Generator. Energy is measured in Flux.[1][5]

The mod can report what your network is doing. Storage blocks show the energy stored out of their capacity in Flux. You can also check the average energy transferred over a number of ticks in Flux per tick, and the average loss between points on a wire. Use these readouts when a line isn't delivering what you expect.[5]

Machine settings and redstone

Several machines have settings you can toggle. Redstone control can be inverted or not, and some blocks can also switch a strong redstone signal on or off. The Bottling Machine can either hold containers until they're full or allow partial filling. Pumps can be set to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone, but the game warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[5]

Watch out: Leave the pump's cobblestone-replacement option off when you're dealing with large amounts of fluid. The mod itself warns that it can cause lag and isn't advisable in that case.[5]

Fluid containers can also refuse certain contents. Some will tell you they can't store gases.[5]

Item handling and automation

The mod has its own logistics tools. The Conveyor Belt comes with Dropping and Extracting variants, and the Extracting Conveyor Belt reports how many items per second it will extract. You also get the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. These cover most of what you need for moving items between machines.[5]

Mineral veins and core samples

Ore generation is tied to mineral veins. You take a core sample with a drill, and it either finds a vein or reports that no minerals were found. If it finds one, it also tells you the vein's integrity. Survey hints point you toward nearby veins. A core sample only works on a map from the same dimension, and only if the sample lies within that map's borders. You can also buy a Mineral Deposit Map from the Structural Engineer villager.[5]

Unverified Pack-specific numbers such as machine energy use, wire transfer rates and vein sizes aren't confirmed here. No config files for this mod were available, so check the in-game Engineer's Manual for exact values.

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in this pack. The quests are untitled, so I'm describing them by what they ask you to hold. The chapter is a tree with four starting points: Engineer's Hammer, Engineer's Wire Cutters, Engineer's Screwdriver and Treated Wood Planks. Each one opens its own branch.[3]

Tier 1: tools and treated wood

The a quest in "?" quest for Treated Wood Planks unlocks the External Heater (External Heater), the Garden Cloche, the Electromagnet, the Turntable and the Charging Station. Create can make the planks too. The pack changed that recipe, so you can use a Create filling recipe instead of the mod's own route.[3][4]

Tier 2: bricks, coke and the workbench

The Hammer opens the brick quests. After it you'll collect Blast Brick, 8 Kiln Brick and Coke Brick. Coke Brick leads on to Coal Coke and a Bucket of Creosote Oil. That bucket leads to Treated Wood Planks again, then to the Engineer's Crafting Table, then to the Engineer's Workbench.[3]

The pack also changed the Create item application recipes for Kiln Brick and Reinforced Blast Brick, so you can make both with Create instead of only crafting them.[4]

Engineering blocks and build quests

The Hammer also unlocks the Light Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block block quests. Most of the chapter's big build quests need both. They then ask for scaffolding, fences, sheetmetal, conveyors, pipes and vanilla parts. One of them wants 10 Light Engineering Blocks, 10 Steel Scaffolding, 8 Steel Fences and 9 hoppers.[3]

Heavy tier quests start at the Heavy Engineering Block block, then the Generator Block and Radiator Block. One build quest asks for 9 Radiator Blocks, 4 Generator Blocks and 13 Heavy Engineering Blocks. Steel-tier quests add Steel Sheetmetal and steel blocks from outside Immersive Engineering. One asks for 27 Reinforced Blast Brick.[3]

Power and wiring

The Wire Cutters open the power branch. The Thermoelectric Generator and the Kinetic Dynamo come first, and the dynamo leads on to the Water Wheel and Windmill. Wire coils come in LV, MV and HV, and a quest in "?" wants all three. Connectors, relays, accumulators and transformers all unlock after the first coil.[3][4]

The three accumulators each have their own in-pack recipe.[4]

Fluids and item logistics

The Screwdriver opens logistics. The Fluid Pipe leads to the Fluid Pump, Fluid Outlet, Pipe Valve and Fluid Router. Crates and barrels are there too. The Conveyor Belt leads to the Item Router, Item Batcher and the sheetmetal chutes. Another chapter's hydro pump quest also accepts the Fluid Pipe.[3][7]

Workbench tier: tools and upgrades

The Engineer's Workbench is the gateway to the late branch. Straight after it you'll find several Engineer's Blueprint quests plus the Revolver, Mining Drill, Buzzsaw, Railgun, Chemical Thrower, Engineer's Skyhook, Heavy Plated Shield, Accumulator Backpack and Engineer's Toolbox. Each tool has its own upgrade quests, such as the Extended Magazine and Advanced Lubrication System. Revolver ammo is split into two quests: standard cartridges, and special ones like Homing Cartridge.[3]

Tip: The Chemical Thrower recipe needs a Pressurized Air Tank (Pressurized Air Tank), which is a Mining Drill upgrade. Plan on getting the drill first.[3][4]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

3 parts

In this pack, the recipes tie Immersive Engineering to All the Ores, Farmer's Delight, Oritech and Productive Bees. The recipe data marks every one of them as changed by the pack, so this is how the pack wires things together, not how the mod behaves by default.[4]

All the Ores: plates, blocks and recycling

Hammering plates is the biggest link. Craft with the Engineer's Hammer and an ingot from the matching tag, and the plate you get comes from All the Ores. That covers aluminum, constantan, copper, electrum, gold, iron, lead, nickel, silver, steel and uranium, for example Steel Plate and Copper Plate.[4]

Steel PlateChanged by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Storage works the same way. Immersive Engineering's metal slabs craft into All the Ores blocks, such as Steel Block from the Steel Slab. Aluminum, constantan, electrum, lead, nickel, silver and uranium have matching recipes.[4]

Old gear can be recycled too, by smelting or by blasting. Steel tools and armor (axe, pickaxe, shovel, sword, helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots) give you Steel Nugget. The Faraday armor pieces give you Aluminum Nugget.[4]

Farmer's Delight: seeds and Plant Oil

The pack has squeezer recipes that connect Farmer's Delight seeds to Immersive Engineering's Plant Oil. They use Cabbage Seeds and Tomato Seeds.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Immersive Engineering?

    8 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in the pack, and it also shows up in two other chapters. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so you'll find them by their reward items and by what they ask you to hand in. Most tasks are simply 'have this item', and many accept any one of several variants.[3][6][7]

    Where the chapter starts

Four quests have no prerequisite, so you can open the chapter from any of them: a quest in "?" (Engineer's Screwdriver), a quest in "?" (Engineer's Wire Cutters), a quest in "?" (Engineer's Hammer) and a quest in "?" (Treated Wood Planks). Everything else hangs off one of these.[3]

Hammer branch: bricks and multiblock parts

    Multiblock build quests

Once you have both engineering blocks, a run of quests asks you to gather the materials for a whole structure, such as a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". They ask for stacks of engineering blocks, steel scaffolding and sheetmetal, plus things like fluid pipes, conveyors, pistons, hoppers and cauldrons depending on the quest.[3]

After a quest in "?" (Heavy Engineering Block) the requirements get bigger. a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" all need heavy engineering blocks. a quest in "?" asks for 27 Reinforced Blast Brick along with steel sheetmetal and steel blocks. a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" are the largest, and they also need Radiator Block blocks.[3]

Side quests around those: a quest in "?" asks for the Generator Block, a quest in "?" asks for a radiator, and a quest in "?" asks for a reinforced blast brick plus a hopper. That last one unlocks a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", which both ask for the Blast Furnace Preheater.[3]

    Power and wiring

a quest in "?" opens the electrical side. a quest in "?" accepts any one wire coil, and a quest in "?" then wants all three types. Also unlocked by the first coil quest are a quest in "?" (connectors), a quest in "?" (relays), a quest in "?" (accumulators) and a quest in "?" (transformers).[3]

Generation quests come straight off the wire cutters: a quest in "?" (Thermoelectric Generator) and a quest in "?" (Kinetic Dynamo). The dynamo quest leads to a quest in "?" (Water Wheel) and a quest in "?" (Windmill). a quest in "?" is a big bulk-materials quest that also follows the wire cutters.[3]

Screwdriver branch: pipes, belts and storage

    Treated wood branch

Treated Wood Planks also unlock five single-item quests: a quest in "?" (External Heater), a quest in "?" (Garden Cloche), a quest in "?" (Electromagnet), a quest in "?" (Turntable) and a quest in "?" (Charging Station).[3]

Workbench branch: tools, weapons and upgrades

The longest chain runs treated wood planks, then a quest in "?" (Engineer's Crafting Table), then a quest in "?" (Engineer's Workbench). The workbench unlocks the tool quests and several blueprint quests, which ask for the Engineer's Blueprint: a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[3]

    Other chapters

In the farming chapter, a quest in "?" accepts Industrial Hemp Seeds or flax seeds from several other mods, so any of them completes it.[6]

In the XyCraft chapter, a quest in "?" asks for a hydro pump and a pipe. The pipe slot accepts many pipe types, including Fluid Pipe.[7]

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

    2 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The pack has had this mod since version 1.0 or earlier, so the changelog below is the one that applies to the version you are playing.[2]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Immersive Engineering were available, so any changes made to it between pack releases are unverified.

    What's new in 12.4.2-194

    • The item router can now filter by mod, in addition to tags.[8]
    • There is a new item hatch, which pulls a single stack from an inventory.[8]
    • Cloche recipes can now have an optional "fluid" element. If a recipe doesn't specify one, it uses water. Crimson and warped fungi are now grown with lava.[8]
    • Extracting conveyors now have a configurable stack size instead of a configurable tick rate.[8]
    • The storage shelf has new insertion logic. It tries to fill slots that already hold the same item, otherwise it places the item in the slots right after it. This keeps the individual crates on the shelf more organized, and it works for shift-clicking and automatic insertion.[8]
    • Illager loot tables changed: fusiliers and bulwarks now respect looting, and commandos no longer drop emeralds.[8]
Watch out: The extracting conveyor change means your existing conveyors need to be adjusted again. If you have conveyors from an older version, check them after updating.[8]

    Bug fixes

    • The mixer no longer accidentally crafts a lingering awkward potion.[8]
    • Catwalks now work properly when you use a hammer on them.[8]
    • Shift-click behavior in the Engineer's Crafting Table is fixed.[8]
    • Chutes now accept item input from the side.[8]
    • Engineer illagers now drop their raid banner.[8]
    • Shelves no longer cause crashes when accessed from unexpected sides.[8]
    • Windows used in multiblocks are less directionally dependent.[8]
    • The backpack antenna now visually disconnects from wires.[8]

This release also added or updated the zh_cn translation.[8]
