What is Compact Machines?

1 part

Compact Machines lets you step inside a tiny pocket dimension and build there. This pack ships version 7.0.81 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1]

Here is how it works, going by the quest book. You place a Compact Machine, then enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The quest says the size of the machine depends on the recipe, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45. You can't break the walls of the compacted room, and you leave by Right Clicking the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Compact Machines" quest lives in the Building Tips chapter, which opens with "Building Tips!" quest. Its task is to get the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

It comes straight after "Paxel" quest, which itself follows "Tools!" quest. So the order is Building Tips!, then Tools!, then Paxel, then Compact Machines.[2]

Two other building quests also unlock after Paxel: "Building Gadgets" quest and "Construction Sticks" quest. Compact Machines is one of three side branches there.[2]

The part of the chapter I can see doesn't show any quest that comes after Compact Machines. 34 of the chapter's 67 quests aren't shown to me, so check the quest book itself for the rest. Nothing in the quest text ties this mod to the ATM Star path. The quest book places it in Building Tips.[2]

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

2 parts

Compact Machines gives you a pocket dimension you can step into. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to go inside. The pack's quest book covers it in the "Building Tips" chapter, in "Compact Machines" quest, which comes right after "Paxel" quest and asks you to make the device.[2][3]

The quest says the size of a machine depends on its recipe, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45. You can't break the walls of the room from inside, and you leave by right clicking the device. The mod also has a key binding called "Quick-Exit Compact Machine".[2][3]

What to craft, in order

  1. Make Compact Machine Wall first. One crafting makes 8 of them, and every machine recipe in the pack needs one.[4]
  2. Make an Atom Shrinking Module and an Atom Enlarging Module. You need both for the device and for every machine, so make them early.[4]
  3. Craft the Personal Shrinking Device. It uses both modules, and it is what the quest asks for and what lets you enter a machine.[2][4]
  4. Craft a machine (New Machine), place it, and use the device on it to go inside.[3][4]

Choosing a machine

The pack adds its own machine recipes. They all use a wall and both modules, plus one extra item that changes from recipe to recipe. The recipe ids are tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. Check each one below to see what it asks for, since the quest says the recipe decides the size.[2][4]

Tiny machine recipe, added by the pack.

Small machine recipe, added by the pack.

Normal machine recipe, added by the pack.

Large machine recipe, added by the pack.

Giant machine recipe, added by the pack.

Colossal machine recipe, added by the pack.

Farming machine recipe, added by the pack.

Soaryn machine recipe, added by the pack.

Tip: Craft the device before your first machine. The device is what you use on a placed machine to get inside.[3]

How does Compact Machines work?

5 parts

Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to step inside. The room you land in is its own little space, and the machine block outside stays bound to it.[3]

Getting in and out

The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD for short) is your key. You use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space. Here is how this pack makes it:[3]

Recipe id: compactmachines:personal_shrinking_device

To leave, the mod has a Quick-Exit Compact Machine keybind, so you don't have to walk back out manually. There is also an Open Room Upgrade Screen keybind. The sources only give its name, so what upgrades the screen offers is unverified.[3]

Watch out: There is a game rule that can damage shrinking devices when you leave rooms. If your PSD seems to wear down after trips, check that rule on your world.[3]

Crafting the machines

Every machine is the same item, New Machine, and the pack adds a separate recipe for each variant. The recipe ids are named tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus the extra farming and soaryn ones. All of these recipes are added by the pack, so they are not mod defaults.[4]

The in-game text refers to a machine being bound to a room of a given size, so the size you craft decides the room you get. Here are all the pack's machine recipes:[3][4]

Building blocks and modules

The Compact Machine Wall, Atom Shrinking Module and Atom Enlarging Module have their own recipes below. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[4]

Crafting Shaped

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

The mod also has a Solid Compact Machine Wall block. The Foundations advancement asks you to obtain a breakable wall block.[3]

Staying inside the room

Rooms have boundaries, and the mod has game rules for what happens when a player gets out of bounds. You can allow or disallow out-of-bounds survival players, creative players and spectators separately. A further rule decides whether players who are out of bounds take damage.[3]

Other bits you'll notice

  • Room templates can generate structures when a room is created. The tooltip says how many structures a template generates.[3]
  • Machine rooms have their own biome, called Compact Machine.[3]
  • There is a villager profession called the Spatial Tinkerer. The sources don't say what it trades.[3]
  • If you use Jade, there are options to show bound Compact Machines and to show machine owners.[3]
  • Info text can tell you which room a machine is bound to, and which room a given player is inside.[3]

Unverified How power, fluids and items move between a machine and the outside world, and how to automate through machines, is not explained in the available sources, so it is unverified here.

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

5 parts

Compact Machines progression in this pack is short and recipe-driven. The quest book gives you one quest for it, and everything after that is choosing which machine recipe to craft. Here is the path.[2][4]

Where the quest book puts it

The quest "Compact Machines" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter, right after the "Paxel" quest quest. It asks you to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device. The quest text explains that you place a Compact Machine, then enter it with that device. You can't break the machine's walls, and you leave by right-clicking the device.[2]

The same quest says the size of a machine depends on the recipe, ranging from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. That is the whole tier system: you pick the recipe, and the recipe sets the size.[2]

Step 1: the building blocks

Every machine starts with the same parts: the Compact Machine Wall, the Atom Enlarging Module and the Atom Shrinking Module. These parts use the mod's own recipes.[4]

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

Step 2: the Personal Shrinking Device

This is what the quest asks for, and you need it to get inside your machines. It is built from both modules plus a few common materials, and it uses the mod's own recipe.[2][4]

Step 3: pick your machine tier

The pack adds eight machine recipes: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. Each recipe outputs the same New Machine item. They share one pattern, and a single slot changes to set the tier. The recipe dump marks these recipes as added by the pack, not taken from the mod's defaults.[4]

Tip: Check each recipe above to see what the tier slot asks for, and plan your upgrades around that. The quest only gives the overall range of 5x5x5 to 45x45x45, so test a machine in your own world to see exactly how big a given tier is.[2][4]

If you like the idea of storing whole spaces, the AE2 quest "Spatial IO" quest compares its Spatial IO system to the Compact Machines mod. It works differently, capturing structures in storage cells, so read that quest in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter before comparing the two.[5]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Compact Machines?

2 parts

Compact Machines has one quest of its own in this pack, and it sits in the Building Tips chapter. A second quest, in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter, mentions the mod as a point of comparison.[2][5]

Building Tips chapter

The quest is "Compact Machines" quest, and it asks you to get the Personal Shrinking Device. In the quest book it comes right after "Paxel" quest. That quest comes after "Tools!" quest, which follows the chapter's opening quest, "Building Tips!" quest.[2]

"Paxel" quest also leads to "Building Gadgets" quest, "Construction Sticks" quest and "Quarries and Mines" quest. So Compact Machines sits in the tools and building-aid branch of the chapter, next to those three.[2]

The quest text explains the basics. You place a Compact Machine and enter its compacted dimension with the Personal Shrinking Device. The size depends on the recipe and ranges from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. You can't break the machine's walls, and you leave by right-clicking the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

Tip: To get back out, right-click with the Personal Shrinking Device. The walls can't be broken, so that is your way out.[2]

Applied Energistics 2 chapter

"Spatial IO" quest asks for the Spatial IO Port. Its text says AE2 can store entire structures inside storage cells, "not too dissimilarly to the Compact Machines mod". It also warns that a mob or player standing inside the Spatial Containment Structure when it is captured goes along with the space, so make sure you have a way back out and in.[5]

Two quests follow it in order. a quest in "Applied Energistics 2" covers the cage of Spatial Pylons, with spaces of up to 128x128x128. After that, "Spatial Storage Cell" quest covers the cells that hold the captured space. These AE2 quests are about AE2's own spatial storage, not Compact Machines items.[5]
