What is Compact Machines?
1 part
Compact Machines lets you step inside a small pocket dimension. You place a Compact Machine, then enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The pack includes version 7.0.22 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1][2]
How big the inside is depends on the recipe you craft the machine from. Sizes range from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. You can't break the walls of a Compact Machine. To get out, right click with the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack's quest book covers it in the "Compact Machines" quest quest, in the "Building Tips" chapter. The task is to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]
It sits on the tools side of the chapter. "Building Tips!" quest leads to "Tools!" quest, which leads to "Paxel" quest, and the Compact Machines quest comes right after Paxel. "Building Gadgets" quest and "Construction Sticks" quest also follow Paxel, so the three sit side by side.[2]
None of the quests shown for this chapter come after the Compact Machines quest. The chapter has 66 quests and 33 of them aren't shown here, so check the quest book itself for anything further along.[2]
How do you get started with Compact Machines?
4 parts
Compact Machines lets you place a block and step inside it to reach your own pocket dimension. In this pack the "Compact Machines" quest quest in the Building Tips chapter introduces it, and it comes after the Paxel quest. The quest task is to get a Personal Shrinking Device, so that's our first goal.[2]
Step 1: the two modules
The Personal Shrinking Device and every machine recipe in this pack use the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Make these first, because you'll need both again for every machine.[3]

Step 2: the Personal Shrinking Device
The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is your key to getting in and out. You use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space, and right-clicking with it takes you back out.[2][4]

Step 3: the wall
Every machine recipe in the pack also uses the Compact Machine Wall, so craft one for each machine you plan to make.[3]
Finally: craft and place a machine
Machines come in several sizes, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45, and the size depends on the recipe you use. The pack adds its own recipe for each of these: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. Each one needs both modules and a wall plus one extra item that sets the variant, so check the recipe viewer for the one you want. Here's the tiny one as an example.[2][3]

This recipe is added by the pack. The other sizes each have their own recipe.
Place the machine in the world, then use your PSD on it to go inside.[4]
How does Compact Machines work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to step inside. The room you land in is its own little space, and the machine block outside stays bound to it.[5]
Getting in and out
The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD for short) is your key. You use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space. Here is how this pack makes it:[5]

To leave, the mod has a Quick-Exit Compact Machine keybind, so you don't have to walk back out manually. There is also an Open Room Upgrade Screen keybind. The sources only give its name, so what upgrades the screen offers is unverified.[5]
Crafting the machines
Every machine is the same item, New Machine, and the pack adds a separate recipe for each variant. The recipe ids are named tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus the extra farming and soaryn ones. All of these recipes are added by the pack, so they are not mod defaults.[6]
The in-game text refers to a machine being bound to a room of a given size, so the size you craft decides the room you get. Here are all the pack's machine recipes:[5][6]

Building blocks and modules
The Compact Machine Wall, Atom Shrinking Module and Atom Enlarging Module have their own recipes below. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[6]

The mod also has a Solid Compact Machine Wall block. The Foundations advancement asks you to obtain a breakable wall block.[5]
Staying inside the room
Rooms have boundaries, and the mod has game rules for what happens when a player gets out of bounds. You can allow or disallow out-of-bounds survival players, creative players and spectators separately. A further rule decides whether players who are out of bounds take damage.[5]
Other bits you'll notice
- Room templates can generate structures when a room is created. The tooltip says how many structures a template generates.[5]
- Machine rooms have their own biome, called Compact Machine.[5]
- There is a villager profession called the Spatial Tinkerer. The sources don't say what it trades.[5]
- If you use Jade, there are options to show bound Compact Machines and to show machine owners.[5]
- Info text can tell you which room a machine is bound to, and which room a given player is inside.[5]
Unverified How power, fluids and items move between a machine and the outside world, and how to automate through machines, is not explained in the available sources, so it is unverified here.
How do you progress through Compact Machines?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Compact Machines progression in this pack is short and recipe-driven. The quest book gives you one quest for it, and everything after that is choosing which machine recipe to craft. Here is the path.[6][7]
Where the quest book puts it
The quest "Compact Machines" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter, right after the "Paxel" quest quest. It asks you to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device. The quest text explains that you place a Compact Machine, then enter it with that device. You can't break the machine's walls, and you leave by right-clicking the device.[7]
The same quest says the size of a machine depends on the recipe, ranging from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. That is the whole tier system: you pick the recipe, and the recipe sets the size.[7]
Step 1: the building blocks
Every machine starts with the same parts: the Compact Machine Wall, the Atom Enlarging Module and the Atom Shrinking Module. These parts use the mod's own recipes.[6]

Step 2: the Personal Shrinking Device
This is what the quest asks for, and you need it to get inside your machines. It is built from both modules plus a few common materials, and it uses the mod's own recipe.[6][7]
Crafting Shaped
| any iron nugget | any glass panes | any iron nugget |
| any iron ingot | any copper ingot | any iron ingot |

Step 3: pick your machine tier
The pack adds eight machine recipes: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. Each recipe outputs the same New Machine item. They share one pattern, and a single slot changes to set the tier. The recipe dump marks these recipes as added by the pack, not taken from the mod's defaults.[6]

A related option in Applied Energistics 2
If you like the idea of storing whole spaces, the AE2 quest "Spatial IO" quest compares its Spatial IO system to the Compact Machines mod. It works differently, capturing structures in storage cells, so read that quest in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter before comparing the two.[8]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Compact Machines?
3 parts
Compact Machines only has one quest in this pack, and it sits in the Building Tips chapter, which has 66 quests. It is a builder's quest rather than part of a tech chain, so you can pick it up as soon as you have the Paxel.[2]
The Building Tips path
- Start with "Building Tips!" quest, the chapter's opening quest.[2]
- Next comes "Tools!" quest, which asks you for a Stick.[2]
- Then "Paxel" quest, the Paxel quest.[2]
- Finally "Compact Machines" quest, which unlocks right after the Paxel quest.[2]
The Paxel quest also leads to a few other building quests: "Building Gadgets" quest, "Construction Sticks" quest and "Quarries and Mines" quest. They sit beside Compact Machines in the chapter.[2]
What the Compact Machines quest asks for
The task is to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device. The quest explains that after you place a Compact Machine, you use this device to enter the compacted dimension inside it.[2]
The quest text also tells you a few useful things. The size of a Compact Machine depends on its recipe, ranging from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. You can't break the machine's walls. To leave, you Right Click with the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]
A mention in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter
The Compact Machines mod is also named in the text of "Spatial IO" quest in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter. That quest compares AE2's way of storing whole structures in storage cells to Compact Machines. It is an AE2 quest and asks for AE2's Spatial IO Port, not anything from Compact Machines.[9]
