What is Compact Machines?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Compact Machines lets you step inside a tiny pocket dimension and build there. This pack ships version 7.0.81 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1]

Here is how it works, going by the quest book. You place a Compact Machine, then enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The quest says the size of the machine depends on the recipe, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45. You can't break the walls of the compacted room, and you leave by Right Clicking the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Compact Machines" quest lives in the Building Tips chapter, which opens with "Building Tips!" quest. Its task is to get the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

It comes straight after "Paxel" quest, which itself follows "Tools!" quest. So the order is Building Tips!, then Tools!, then Paxel, then Compact Machines.[2]

Two other building quests also unlock after Paxel: "Building Gadgets" quest and "Construction Sticks" quest. Compact Machines is one of three side branches there.[2]

The part of the chapter I can see doesn't show any quest that comes after Compact Machines. 34 of the chapter's 67 quests aren't shown to me, so check the quest book itself for the rest. Nothing in the quest text ties this mod to the ATM Star path. The quest book places it in Building Tips.[2]

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Compact Machines gives you a pocket dimension you can step into. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to go inside. The pack's quest book covers it in the "Building Tips" chapter, in "Compact Machines" quest, which comes right after "Paxel" quest and asks you to make the device.[2][3]

The quest says the size of a machine depends on its recipe, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45. You can't break the walls of the room from inside, and you leave by right clicking the device. The mod also has a key binding called "Quick-Exit Compact Machine".[2][3]

What to craft, in order

  1. Make Compact Machine Wall first. One crafting makes 8 of them, and every machine recipe in the pack needs one.[4]
  2. Make an Atom Shrinking Module and an Atom Enlarging Module. You need both for the device and for every machine, so make them early.[4]
  3. Craft the Personal Shrinking Device. It uses both modules, and it is what the quest asks for and what lets you enter a machine.[2][4]
  4. Craft a machine (New Machine), place it, and use the device on it to go inside.[3][4]

Choosing a machine

The pack adds its own machine recipes. They all use a wall and both modules, plus one extra item that changes from recipe to recipe. The recipe ids are tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. Check each one below to see what it asks for, since the quest says the recipe decides the size.[2][4]

Large machine recipe, added by the pack.

Farming machine recipe, added by the pack.

Soaryn machine recipe, added by the pack.

Tip: Craft the device before your first machine. The device is what you use on a placed machine to get inside.[3]

How does Compact Machines work?

5 parts

Compact Machines gives you pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to step inside. Each machine is bound to a room of a certain size, and that size is what you are really choosing when you craft one.[3]

Getting in and out

The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is your key. Use it on a placed machine and you enter its compact space. The mod also adds a Quick-Exit keybind for leaving a room, and an Open Room Upgrade Screen keybind. Both show up under the Compact Machines category in your controls.[3]

The PSD is a mod recipe, not changed by the pack.

The mod has gamerules that control what happens to people and devices around the room boundaries. They cover whether survival, creative and spectator players may be out of bounds, whether out-of-bounds players take damage, and whether leaving a room damages your shrinking device.[3]

Crafting the machine parts

Every machine is built from a Compact Machine Wall, an Atom Shrinking Module and an Atom Enlarging Module. These three are mod recipes that the pack leaves as they are.[5]

Machine sizes in this pack

In this pack every machine is the same item, New Machine. The recipe stamps a room template and a color onto it, and the template decides the room size. The pack adds one recipe per size, and each one uses a different centre item. The recipe blocks below show the exact ingredients.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

These are the room sizes the pack defines, given as width, height and depth in blocks:[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]

  • Tiny: 3 by 3 by 3.[21]
  • Small: 5 by 5 by 5.[19]
  • Normal: 7 by 7 by 7.[18]
  • Large: 9 by 9 by 9.[17]
  • Giant: 11 by 11 by 11.[16]
  • Colossal: 13 by 13 by 13.[14]
  • Farming: 21 wide, 11 high and 21 deep, with a Grass Block floor.[15]
  • Soaryn: 45 by 45 by 45, the biggest room in the pack.[20]

Tiny room, 3 by 3 by 3.

Small room, 5 by 5 by 5.

Normal room, 7 by 7 by 7.

Large room, 9 by 9 by 9.

Giant room, 11 by 11 by 11.

Colossal room, 13 by 13 by 13.

Farming room, with a grass block floor.

Soaryn room, 45 by 45 by 45.

Tip: The recipe for each machine size unlocks once you have a Compact Machine Wall in your inventory, so craft a wall first and the recipes will show up.[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]

Inside the rooms

The mod defines a biome called Compact Machine. It has no precipitation. Its spawn lists include sheep, pigs, chickens, cows and horses, plus hostile mobs such as zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers, slimes, endermen and witches.[3][30]

Seeing what a machine is bound to

The mod has Jade support. You can show bound compact machines and their owners in the tooltip. The mod's text also describes a machine as bound to a room of a given size at a given position, and a player as being inside a given room.[3]

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

3 parts

Compact Machines lets you place a machine and step inside a pocket dimension of its own. In this pack the quest book puts it in the "Building Tips" chapter, in the "The Basics" group (chapter 14 of 54). The quest "Compact Machines" quest comes right after "Paxel" quest, and it asks you to get the Personal Shrinking Device.[31]

Getting started

  1. Craft Compact Machine Wall blocks. Every machine recipe in the pack uses one, so this is the first step.[5]
  2. Craft the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. You need both for the device and for every machine recipe.[5]
  3. Craft the Personal Shrinking Device from those two modules plus a few extra parts. This is the item the quest asks for.[5][31]
  4. Pick a tier recipe from the list below, craft the machine and place it. Then use the Personal Shrinking Device to enter it, and right click the device again to leave.[5][31]

The wall, both modules and the device use the mod's own recipes. The machine recipes below are different, because the pack added all of them.[5]

The tiers

Every tier recipe produces the same New Machine item. Which recipe you use decides the room you get, and the quest says the size depends on the recipe. The pack has recipes for tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal machines, plus two special ones called soaryn and farming.[5][31]

Tiny tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Small tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Normal tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Large tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Giant tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Colossal tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Soaryn variant, a recipe added by the pack.

Farming variant, a recipe added by the pack.

The advancement files for the colossal, farming, giant and large recipes unlock the recipe once you have a Compact Machine Wall in your inventory.[22][23][24][25]

Room sizes

The quest text says machine sizes range from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. The pack's colossal room template is 13x13x13.[14][31]

Watch out: The quest text (up to 45x45x45) and the colossal template (13x13x13) don't match, and the sources don't explain why. Check the actual room size in game before you plan a build around it.[14][31]

Unverified The room sizes for the small, normal, large and giant tiers are set in the pack's room template files for each tier. The sources here do not show those numbers.

The farming variant is a special room. Its template is 21 wide, 21 deep and 11 high, and its floor is a Grass Block.[15]

When you pick a machine back up, it keeps its custom name, its color and its room template.[32]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Compact Machines?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Compact Machines has one quest of its own in this pack, and it sits in the Building Tips chapter. A second quest, in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter, mentions the mod as a point of comparison.[2][33]

Building Tips chapter

The quest is "Compact Machines" quest, and it asks you to get the Personal Shrinking Device. In the quest book it comes right after "Paxel" quest. That quest comes after "Tools!" quest, which follows the chapter's opening quest, "Building Tips!" quest.[2]

"Paxel" quest also leads to "Building Gadgets" quest, "Construction Sticks" quest and "Quarries and Mines" quest. So Compact Machines sits in the tools and building-aid branch of the chapter, next to those three.[2]

The quest text explains the basics. You place a Compact Machine and enter its compacted dimension with the Personal Shrinking Device. The size depends on the recipe and ranges from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. You can't break the machine's walls, and you leave by right-clicking the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

Tip: To get back out, right-click with the Personal Shrinking Device. The walls can't be broken, so that is your way out.[2]

Applied Energistics 2 chapter

"Spatial IO" quest asks for the Spatial IO Port. Its text says AE2 can store entire structures inside storage cells, "not too dissimilarly to the Compact Machines mod". It also warns that a mob or player standing inside the Spatial Containment Structure when it is captured goes along with the space, so make sure you have a way back out and in.[33]

Two quests follow it in order. a quest in "Applied Energistics 2" covers the cage of Spatial Pylons, with spaces of up to 128x128x128. After that, "Spatial Storage Cell" quest covers the cells that hold the captured space. These AE2 quests are about AE2's own spatial storage, not Compact Machines items.[33]
