Trash Cans is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.1.0. Trash Cans adds trash cans which can be used to void items, liquids, and energy! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • Game crashes when an accelerated Extended Export Bus feeds a Trash Can
Read from the jars and not run in game: in All the Mods 10 8.2, at the default multiplier, an Extended Export Bus from ExtendedAE asks its neighbour for 8, 64, 256, 512 or 768 items at 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 speed cards, in one go. By the research's inference, ExtendedAE's Precise Export Bus asks for over 99 at 2 or more cards outside pulse mode, and AdvancedAE's ME Advanced IO Bus asks for up to the same amounts. Trash Cans 1.1.0 accepts the whole stack and keeps it in a list it later saves, and Minecraft's save format allows a stack count of 1 to 99 only. A 768 stack throws an error on save, and the game crashes. Do not feed those buses at 2 or more speed cards into a Trash Can. Trash Cans 1.1.1 is reported to fix it. 8.2 ships 1.1.0.

What is Trash Cans?

2 parts

Trash Cans is a small utility mod that gives you a clean way to get rid of stuff you don't want. It adds trash cans that void items, fluids and energy. The pack ships version 1.1.0 of the mod.[1][2]

What each trash can does

Items and fluids can be filtered as a whitelist or a blacklist. According to the mod's project page there is no limit on how much or how fast you can void. It also keeps the last 6 deleted items, so you can retrieve them if you delete something by accident.[1]

The mod can also void Mekanism nuclear waste, but the project page says that is disabled by default and is switched on in the mod's config file. That is the mod's own default, and the sources don't show whether the pack changes it.[1]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book has a quest for it called "Trash Cans" quest, subtitled "Getting Rid of The Excess". It lives in the "Basic Storage" chapter, which is in the "Storage" group and is chapter 30 of 70 in the book. The chapter has 89 quests.[3]

The quest's tasks are the three trash cans listed above, and its text says they destroy unwanted items, liquid and power. The quest list shows no prerequisite for it. The quest list doesn't show which quests come right after it, and 39 of the chapter's quests aren't shown in the sources, so check the book itself for the exact layout.[3]

The chapter intro describes the chapter as the basic ways to store items without needing power. The trash cans sit alongside other storage quests such as "Vanilla Storage" quest, "Sophisticated Storage" quest and "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest.[3]

How do you get started with Trash Cans?

5 parts

Trash Cans is a small mod with one job: getting rid of stuff you don't want. In this pack, the quest book introduces it in the "Basic Storage" chapter, which sits in the Storage group (chapter 30 of 70). The quest is called "Trash Cans" quest, and it asks you for the item, liquid and energy trash cans.[1][3]

Step 1: The Item Trash Can

Start with Item Trash Can. It voids items, and it has a filter for up to 9 items, so you can choose what it destroys instead of deleting everything. Items can be whitelisted or blacklisted.[1][4][5]

Tip: Misclicked and deleted something? Up to the last 6 deleted items can be retrieved.[1]

Step 2: The Liquid Trash Can

Next, make Liquid Trash Can. It voids liquids and gasses, and it has a filter for up to 9 fluids. Fluids can be whitelisted or blacklisted too.[1][4][5]

Step 3: The Energy Trash Can

Then craft Energy Trash Can. It voids energy, and it can also limit the energy transfer rate. You set that limit inside its GUI.[1][4][5]

Step 4: The Ultimate Trash Can

Once you have the item, liquid and energy trash cans, you can combine them into Ultimate Trash Can, which voids items, fluids and energy in one block. The recipe uses those trash cans, so don't throw any away early.[4][5]

Where you'll need it next

The Ultimate Trash Can comes up again in the "Mekanism: Reactors" chapter. The quest "Toss it!" quest comes after the Steam quest. It suggests that if you don't need the extra energy from your reactor, you can tube the Steam into an Ultimate Trash Can and delete it.[6]

Unverified The Trash Cans project page says voiding Mekanism nuclear waste is disabled by default and can be enabled in the mod's config file. No config file for this mod is available for the pack, so whether the pack changes that setting is unverified.

How does Trash Cans work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Trash Cans is a simple mod with one job: getting rid of things you don't want. Each can voids a different resource: items, fluids, or energy. The Ultimate Trash Can can void items, fluids and energy in one block.[1][7]

The cans

Filters and limits

Items and fluids can be whitelisted or blacklisted, and you set the filters inside the can's GUI. The energy can's transfer limit is also set in its GUI.[1]

The Ultimate Trash Can combines the other cans' behaviors. It has filters for items and liquids, plus a limit for energy transfer.[1]

Tip: The project page says there is no cap on how much a can can void, or how fast. You can void items, fluids and energy as much and as fast as you want.[1]

Getting items back

If you void something by accident, you can retrieve it. The mod keeps up to the last 6 deleted items.[1]

Crafting

In this pack, the item, fluid and energy cans each use a shaped crafting recipe from the mod. The Ultimate Trash Can uses a shapeless recipe that combines the other cans.[8]

What the sources don't confirm

Unverified The mod's project page says voiding Mekanism nuclear waste is disabled by default and can be enabled in the config file. The sources here show no config file for Trash Cans in this pack, so whether you can change that setting here is unverified.

How do you progress through Trash Cans?

4 parts

Trash Cans don't have a long tier ladder. You get three single-purpose cans, then one Ultimate can that covers everything. That keeps this path short and easy to follow.[4]

Where the quest book puts them

The quest "Trash Cans" quest sits in the Basic Storage chapter, which is in the Storage group (chapter 30 of 70 in the book). It asks you to get the Item Trash Can, the Liquid Trash Can and the Energy Trash Can. The book describes them as a way to destroy unwanted items, liquid and power.[3]

Tier 1: the three basic cans

Each one is a normal crafting recipe from the mod. Here they are as the pack has them.[4]

Tier 2: the Ultimate Trash Can

The Ultimate Trash Can is the last step. Its recipe is shapeless and builds on the basic cans, so you need to make those first.[4]

Where you meet the Ultimate can again

The Mekanism: Reactors chapter (Tech group, chapter 51 of 70) has a quest called "Toss it!" quest, which comes after the quest "Steam" quest. It asks you to get an Ultimate Trash Can. The idea is that if you are running a Fission Reactor with water as coolant, you get steam as a byproduct. If you don't need the extra energy, you can tube that steam into the Ultimate can and delete it.[6]

Tip: The book says steam is pretty much only useful for turbines. If you aren't making energy from it, voiding it in an Ultimate Trash Can is the quest book's safe option for your reactor.[6]

Which All the Mons quests use Trash Cans?

2 parts

Trash Cans show up in two chapters of the quest book. One is the quest that introduces the mod, and the other is a Mekanism reactor tip that uses the top-tier can. They come in this order in the book.[3][6]

Basic Storage (Storage group)

The Basic Storage chapter is chapter 30 of 70 in the book and sits in the Storage group. It has 89 quests. Its quest "Trash Cans" quest is where the mod is introduced, and the book gives it the subtitle "Getting Rid of The Excess".[3]

The quest asks you to get three items: Item Trash Can, Liquid Trash Can and Energy Trash Can. The quest text explains that Trash Cans destroy unwanted items, liquid and power. The book lists no quest that has to come before it. It sits next to other storage intro quests such as "Functional Storage" quest and "Vanilla Storage" quest.[3]

Mekanism: Reactors (Tech group)

The Mekanism: Reactors chapter is chapter 51 of 70 and sits in the Tech group. It has 92 quests. The Trash Can quest here is "Toss it!" quest, called "Toss it!". It asks you to get an Ultimate Trash Can.[6]

It comes after "Steam" quest, which asks for a Basic Chemical Tank and explains that using Water as a coolant gives you Steam as a byproduct. That Steam quest itself follows the chapter's Fission Reactor quest.[6]

The idea behind "Toss it!" is simple. If you don't need more energy and would rather keep your reactor as safe as you can, you can just delete the Steam by tubing it into an Ultimate Trash Can. The quest points out that Steam is pretty much only used by Turbines to make energy.[6]

Tip: Don't need the power from your reactor's Steam? Tube it into an Ultimate Trash Can, as the quest suggests, instead of letting it pile up.[6]

The sources show only part of the Mekanism: Reactors chapter, because 22 of its 92 quests didn't fit. Anything else in those quests is told in the quest book itself.[6]

What changed in Trash Cans between versions?

2 parts

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships with Trash Cans 1.1.0, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]

Trash Cans 1.1.0 (the version in the pack)

  • New tab on the trash can screen that lets you retrieve up to the last 6 deleted items, handy if you binned something by mistake.[9]
  • New config option to disable retrieving deleted items.[9]
  • Improved item and fluid interaction with other mods.[9]
  • Fixed the targets for dragging items from JEI being offset, and fixed dragging fluids from JEI not working.[9]
  • Added Japanese and Turkish translations and updated the Russian translations.[9]

The 1.0.18 releases

Version 1.0.18 was the initial release of Trash Cans for Minecraft 1.21. It was followed by a few small patches:[9][10]

  • 1.0.18a: updated the mod to account for breaking changes in Mekanism.[9][10]
  • 1.0.18b: fixed trash cans not connecting to Mekanism gas pipes.[9][10]
  • 1.0.18c: fixed a crash when breaking a trash can block that uses an enchanted item in its filter.[9][10]
