The Aether is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.5.10. The Aether Team presents: The original Aether mod! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • Zanite ring or pendant plus Eternal Stella: I can't mine anything
In All the Mods 10 8.2, read from the jars and not run in game: Eternal Stella removes an item's damage and max_damage components, and the Zanite Ring and Zanite Pendant mining speed formula divides by the item's max damage. With max damage at 0 that division reads as 0 / 0, which is NaN in Java float arithmetic, and a NaN mining speed gives no block-break progress. A report on pack 8.1 gives the symptom, every block feeling like bedrock, with Zanite accessories, and does not give the cause. Unequip the ring or pendant (not tested), and do not apply Eternal Stella to a Zanite accessory.

What is The Aether?

1 part

This pack includes The Aether version 1.5.10. It adds a sky dimension that floats high above the Overworld, with floating islands, structures, lots of clouds, and new items, mobs and dungeons.[1][2]

The pack's quest book gives the mod its own chapter, "The Aether", in the "Exploration" group. It is chapter 66 of 70 in the book and has 72 quests.[2]

How the quest chapter flows

Thirty of the 72 quests in this chapter are not shown in the material I had, so check the quest book itself for them.[2]

How do you get started with The Aether?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.0 guide

Welcome to the sky! This section covers the first things worth crafting once you start playing with The Aether in this pack. Each recipe card below shows the exact in-pack recipe, so you can see what this pack actually uses.[3]

Your first tools

Start with Skyroot gear. The Skyroot Axe is the first tool to make, and a Skyroot Bucket is also crafted from Skyroot materials.[3]

Once you're mining Holystone, upgrade to Holystone tools. Grab the Holystone Pickaxe first, then the Holystone Sword, Holystone Axe and Holystone Shovel as you need them. Holystone matters beyond tools too: the Altar, Freezer and Incubator recipes all use it, so keep a good stack.[3]

Your first workstations

The Altar needs Zanite, so it's your goal once you find a Zanite Gemstone. It's worth it: you use the Altar to obtain Enchanted Gravitite, which leads to the Gravitite gear.[3][4]

The Freezer works with Icestone. One of its uses is freezing accessories, which even earns you an advancement.[3][4]

The Incubator builds on the Ambrosium Torch you made earlier, so craft it once your torches are sorted.[3]

How does The Aether work?

5 parts

The Aether has no in-jar guidebook and no reusable documentation in the sources I have, so this section sticks to what the pack's language file, configs and recipe dump actually show. That covers the three machine blocks, the Aether-specific recipe types, what the pack changed, and the config switches that affect how play works.[5][6][7]

The machine blocks

The mod ships an Altar, a Freezer and an Incubator as blocks. Advancements show what the Altar and the Freezer are for. One asks you to use an Altar to obtain Enchanted Gravitite. The other asks you to use a Freezer and Icestone to freeze an accessory.[5]

The sources give no GUI layout, fuel use, processing times or automation rules for any of these blocks, so I won't guess at them. For the Incubator there is only the block name.[5]

Aether recipe types

Besides normal crafting, the mod adds its own recipe types: aether:enchanting and aether:freezing. The dump lists 9 enchanting recipes, and one freezing recipe turns a Cold Aercloud into a Blue Aercloud.[7]

Blue AercloudMod recipe

Freezing (aether)

Recipe id: aether:blue_aercloud_freezing

Two of the enchanting recipes turn music discs into Aether discs. Any disc accepted by the mod's music disc tag becomes the Blue Music Disc, and a vanilla Strad disc becomes the Sepia Music Disc.[7]

Ambrosium Ore can go in a furnace or a blast furnace, and either gives an Ambrosium Shard. A Block of Ambrosium breaks back down into 9 shards.[7]

Stonecutting

The dump counts 40 stonecutting recipes that take Aether blocks and make Aether blocks. Aerogel is a good example of why it matters. Crafting gives 6 slabs, while the stonecutter gives 2 slabs per block, so use the crafting table for slabs. Stairs go the other way: crafting gives 4 per craft and the stonecutter gives 1.[7]

Create automation in this pack

The recipe dump marks several Create recipes for Aether items as added or changed by the pack, so you can automate them. The recipes below cover Ambrosium Ore (the crushing result also includes Holystone), turning Aether Dirt into an Aether Dirt Path, and making an Aether Grass Block from Aether Dirt.[7]

Config switches that change how it plays

  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Gives starting loot on entry]] is true. When you enter the Aether you receive a Book of Lore and Golden Parachutes.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Gives player Aether Portal Frame item]] is false, so you are not handed a portal frame item when you create a world.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Modpack.Enables Immersive Portals compatibility]] is true. It enables code and data pack features for modifying Aether Portals when Immersive Portals is installed.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Data Pack.Add Temporary Freezing automatically]] and [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Data Pack.Add Ruined Portals automatically]] are both false, so those Aether data packs are not added to new worlds automatically.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Repeat Sun Spirit's battle dialogue]] is true, so the Sun Spirit's dialogue plays through every time you meet him.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-startup.toml#Gui.Enables random trivia]] is false, so loading screens don't show random trivia and tips.[8]
Watch out: [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Use default Accessories' menu]] is false, so the Aether's own Accessories menu is used. The config's own warning says not to enable it without emptying your equipped accessories first.[6]

How do you progress through The Aether?

5 parts

The pack's quest book covers The Aether in a 72-quest chapter in the Exploration group (chapter 66 of 70). It starts with "Aether Portal" quest, which asks for Glowstone and a Water Bucket. "The Aether" quest follows once you step through the portal, and almost every other quest in the chapter hangs off it.[2]

Early tiers: Skyroot, Holystone, Ambrosium

"Skyroot Trees" quest leads to the Skyroot tools and weapons. Skyroot is the same tier as wooden tools, so it can't break Iron or Zanite Ore. In exchange, its tools and weapons double drops: the Pickaxe doubles ores, the Shovel doubles dirt, the Hoe doubles plant drops, the Sword doubles mob drops, and the Axe doubles logs.[2]

"Holystone" quest is next. You need a pickaxe to mine it. The Holystone Pickaxe can mine Zanite but not Gravitite, and Holystone tools randomly drop Ambrosium Shard when breaking blocks. The Holystone Sword drops shards when hitting mobs, and the Axe drops them when chopping trees. "Ambrosium" quest calls Ambrosium the coal of The Aether: it makes torches, fuels furnaces, and fuels the Altar.[2]

Zanite and the Altar

"Zanite" quest opens tools, armor, the Nature Staff and the Altar. Zanite tools mine faster as they lose durability, and the Zanite Pickaxe can mine Gravitite. Zanite Armor gives a total of 15 armor points. In this pack, crushing Zanite Ore in Create gives Holystone, 2 Zanite Gemstones and an experience nugget, and the pack changed that recipe.[2][7]

The Altar enchants certain Aether items (it isn't vanilla enchanting) and repairs Aether or vanilla tools.[2]

Gravitite

"Gravitite" quest explains that Gravitite Ore isn't smelted. You enchant it at the Altar instead.[2][7]

Enchanting (aether)

Recipe id: aether:enchanted_gravitite_enchanting

Gravitite tools can be right-clicked on the blocks they break to blast them into the sky, and the quest calls them the best tools The Aether has to offer. The Gravitite Sword launches mobs upward, and the Gravitite Axe is the only way to cut Golden Oak trees. Gravitite Armor gives 20 armor points and 8 armor toughness, and wearing all 5 pieces (gloves included) gives you a leap and prevents fall damage.[2]

The three dungeons

The rest of the chapter is gated by the dungeon keys. Each dungeon has a boss quest, then a key quest, then a set of reward quests.[2]

Top armor tiers

Phoenix Armor gives 20 armor points and 8 toughness, the same as Netherite, and you take no damage from fire or lava while wearing it. Standing in water with it turns it into Obsidian Armor, which gives up the fire protection for an extra 4 armor toughness. Valkyrie Armor has Netherite stats too, and wearing all 5 parts lets you hold Space to fly for a short time.[2]

The pack changed the smithing recipe for Netherite Gloves.[7]

Netherite GlovesChanged by the pack

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: aether:netherite_gloves_smithing

Tip: The Legendaries chapter has an "Aether Dungeons" quest quest that uses these same three dungeons. The Bronze, Silver and Gold bosses are Munkidori, Fezandipiti and Okidogi, and clearing all three claims the trio. The rest of that chapter's quests are in the quest book.[9]

How does The Aether work with other mods?

1 part

The clearest link between The Aether and another mod in this pack is Create. The recipe data for this pack has two Create crushing recipes that take Aether ores as their input, and both are marked as changed by the pack. Treat them as this pack's version of the recipes, not as stock mod behavior.[7]

Crushing Aether ores with Create

Crushing Ambrosium Ore gives you Ambrosium Shard and Holystone, plus a Nugget of Experience as a bonus.[7]

Crushing (create)

Recipe id: create:crushing/compat/aether/ambrosium_ore

Crushing Zanite Ore gives you Zanite Gemstone and Holystone, again with a Nugget of Experience on the side.[7]

Crushing (create)

Recipe id: create:crushing/compat/aether/zanite_ore

Both ores are important Aether progression materials. Ambrosium is the Aether's coal-like fuel, and Zanite is the material the Aether's tools and armor are built from.[2]

Unverified The quest text available for this section only covers Aether items. It doesn't show any quest that needs items from both The Aether and another mod, so no quest-based integrations are confirmed here. Other mods may connect to The Aether in ways that aren't covered by these sources.

Which All the Mons quests use The Aether?

5 parts

The Aether has its own chapter in the quest book, plus a small thread in the Cobblemon legendaries chapter. "The Aether" sits in the Exploration group as chapter 66 of 70 and holds 72 quests. It covers the portal, the materials, the mobs and the three dungeons.[2][9]

Getting in

  1. "Aether Portal" quest asks for Glowstone and a Water Bucket. The quest text jokes about building a 4x5 Glowstone rectangle like a Nether Portal and pouring water in it.[2]
  2. "The Aether" quest comes after the portal and is a dimension task: you just have to arrive in the Aether.[2]
  3. Almost everything else in the chapter hangs off that quest.[2]

Materials and gear

Four material quests open their own mini-chains, each with a weapons, tools and armor step:[2]

Also unlocked straight from The Aether: "Altar" quest (the Altar), "Ambrosium" quest, "Freezer" quest, "Incubator" quest, "Aerclouds" quest and a quest in "The Aether".[2]

Mobs

Most mob quests are kill tasks that open right after The Aether. They include "Aechor Plant" quest, "Blue Swet" quest, "Golden Swet" quest, "Moa" quest, "Zephyr" quest, "Cockatrice" quest, "Mimic" quest, "Flying Cow" quest, "Phyg" quest, "Aerbunny" quest, "Sheepuff" quest and "Aerwhale" quest. There is also "Whoops!" quest, a dimension quest for falling out of the sky.[2]

Dungeon progression

The dungeons are where the chapter branches most. Each follows the same pattern: find the dungeon, beat its boss, claim the key, then pick up the gear quests behind the key.[2]

Tip: The Valkyrie Queen quest comes after you have collected Victory Medal items, and the quest text says you need 10 Victory Medals before you can fight her. Valkyries in the Silver Dungeon are where they come from.[2]

The Legendaries chapter

The Cobblemon "Legendaries" chapter (chapter 17 of 70, 99 quests) also uses the Aether dungeons. "Aether Dungeons" quest is a dimension quest that opens after "Catching Legendaries" quest. It tells you to clear the Bronze, Silver and Gold dungeons to claim the Loyal Three, and notes that the Pecharunt Doll turns up among Aether loot.[9]

Eight quests in that chapter are not covered here for lack of room. They are all in the quest book.[9]

Which The Aether config options matter?

3 parts

The Aether has a handful of options that change how you get in and how the mod talks to you. Here is exactly how this pack sets them, so you know what to expect before you build your first portal.[6][8]

Getting into the Aether

  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Gives player Aether Portal Frame item]] is false. You are not handed an Aether Portal Frame item when you create a world, so you have to make your own way there.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Gives starting loot on entry]] is true. When you enter the Aether you get a Book of Lore and Golden Parachutes as starting loot.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Modpack.Enables Immersive Portals compatibility]] is true. This turns on the code and data pack features that modify Aether Portals when Immersive Portals is installed.[6]

Messages, menus and dialogue

  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Repeat Sun Spirit's battle dialogue]] is true. The Sun Spirit's dialogue plays through in full every time you meet him.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Reposition attack message above hotbar]] is false. If you hit the Slider with the wrong item, the message stays in chat instead of showing above the hotbar.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Use default Accessories' menu]] is false, so the pack uses the Aether's own Accessories menu rather than the default Accessories one.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Show Patreon message]] is false, so the message linking the mod's Patreon does not show.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-startup.toml#Gui.Enables random trivia]] is false. You will not see random trivia and tips at the bottom of loading screens.[8]
Watch out: If you ever switch [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Use default Accessories' menu]] on, empty your equipped accessories first. The config file itself warns against enabling it without doing that.[6]

Optional data packs

Both [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Data Pack.Add Ruined Portals automatically]] and [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Data Pack.Add Temporary Freezing automatically]] are false. That means the Aether Ruined Portals and Aether Temporary Freezing data packs are not added to new worlds automatically in this pack.[6]

Unverified The available files only show the values this pack uses, not the mod's own defaults, so it is unverified which of these options the pack changed from default.
