What is Utilitarian?
Utilitarian is included in this pack, which ships version 1.21.1-0.19.2 of the mod.[1]
The best clue to where it fits is the pack's quest book. The chapter "useful_items_tips" has an untitled quest, "SNAD" quest, whose task accepts any of these items: Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad.[2]
That is the only Utilitarian quest the sources show. They don't give its group or what comes before and after it in the chapter, so I can't say more about its position.[2]
Unverified The sources here do not show whether the ATM Star path uses Utilitarian, and no in-jar guidebook was found for the mod. Any such detail would be told in the pack's quest book, and the quest source here only covers the useful_items_tips chapter.
How do you get started with Utilitarian?
4 parts
Utilitarian adds a set of small utility blocks and tools, and every item below is made at a crafting table in this pack. The pack's quest book points you at one family of items first, so that is where we start.[2][3]
Start with Snad
The quest "SNAD" quest in the useful_items_tips chapter asks you to get Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad. Any one of them completes it. Each is a shapeless recipe that takes a single kind of sand, so it is an easy first win.[2][3]
The Trowel
Next, make the Trowel. Its tooltip says to shift right click to change its pull setting.[3][4]

Redstone helpers
When you start automating, the Redstone Clock is a ready-made pulse source. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak to increase it faster.[3][4]

Quality-of-life blocks
Once your base is running, the Sound Muffler is worth a look. It mutes sounds within a set block radius.[3][4]

How does Utilitarian work?
6 parts
Utilitarian is a collection of small utility blocks and tweaks. The sources here describe no multiblocks, power system or machine GUIs for it, so this section covers how the individual blocks and modules behave and which settings the pack uses.[4][5]
Unverified Whether Utilitarian has any power, fluid-tank or item-pipe mechanics beyond the blocks listed here is unverified, because no guidebook or documentation was available.
Redstone tools
The Redstone Clock pulses on its own. Right-click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak to make it increase faster. The pack keeps the minimum tick rate at 5, which is the mod default. The allowed range is 1 to 24, and the config comment says to set it higher if you're worried about performance. The setting is minimumRedstoneClockTick.[3][4][5]

The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The area is still dark, you just can't see it. There are also inverted lamps, Inverted Lapis Lamp and Inverted Redstone Lamp, which the pack crafts from a lamp plus a lever.[3][4]
Fluids and items
The Fluid Hopper ticks at a rate set by fluidHopperTickRate. The pack uses 10, the mod default, and a lower number ticks faster.[3][5]

The Trowel has a pull setting that you change with a shift right-click. The sources don't explain what the setting does in more detail.[3][4]

Snad and crop growth
Snad, Red Snad and Soul Snad are the mod's growth-boosting sand blocks, and their recipes are shown below. The pack's server config sets how much they boost growth. additionalGrowthTicks is 5 extra growth ticks, and additionalGrowthHeight is 3 extra blocks of height for sugar cane and cactus growing on snad. Both match the mod defaults.[3][5]
Related modules are also set in the pack. Flower duplication is on, so small flowers duplicate when bonemealed, just like tall flowers. Hoe planting is off.[5]
Sound and air
The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a block radius. In the pack that radius is 8, the mod default, set by soundMufflerBlockRange.[3][4][5]
The wind charge replenishes your breath under water. Each use refills 100 air, and a player's full air supply is 300. The feature is enabled in the pack.[4][5]
Keeping traders and raiders away
The No Soliciting module is enabled. A soliciting carpet makes arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face, and a trapped version will kill the trader. The Restraining Order is part of the same module. The pack sets the banner, carpet and player-holding-an-order ranges to 6 chunks each, which matches the defaults.[3][4][5]
The No Raider module is also enabled. Place the Raider Outpost Claim Block in an outpost to stop raiders from returning.[3][4][5]

Other pack settings
- Drit damage (dritDamage) is 2 when you step on it, matching the mod default. Grass can grow on drit.[4][5]
- Better sleep is on, which removes the "too far away" and "there are monsters nearby" errors when you try to sleep.[5]
- Mobs are allowed to despawn even while holding items, and No Trampling and Cursed Earth are both enabled.[5]
- The startup ding sound is enabled, and the pack changes it to a Mekanism sound instead of the default experience orb pickup.[6]
- Recipe advancements are disabled, and the No Startup Messages module is on to hide some alpha-build warnings. The log suppressor is off.[6]
- Potion effect stink lines in first person use a transparency of 0.2, the mod default.[7]
How do you progress through Utilitarian?
2 parts
The sources for this pack show no tier ladder for Utilitarian. It is a set of standalone utility items, each with its own crafting recipe, so you can make whatever suits your base without following a required order.[2][3]
The quest: Snad
The only Utilitarian quest in the sources is "SNAD" quest, in the useful_items_tips chapter. It has no title. Its task is to obtain a Snad, a Red Snad or a Soul Snad, and any of those completes it.[2]
Each Snad variant is a simple shapeless crafting recipe in the pack, so this quest is easy to knock out early.[3]

Everything else is a crafting table recipe
The recipe dump lists the items below, each made at a crafting table. It does not show any gating between them, so there is no confirmed order to follow.[3]
- Angel Block, which has an extra recipe variant in the pack.[3]
- Fluid Hopper and Well Behaved Dropper.[3]
- Lapis Lamp, Inverted Lapis Lamp and Inverted Redstone Lamp.[3]
- Block Magnet, Trowel and Redstone Clock.[3]
- Raider Outpost Claim Block and Restraining Order.[3]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Utilitarian?
In this pack, Utilitarian appears in the quest chapter "useful_items_tips". The quest book gives the mod a quest there, so there is no long chain to follow.[2]
- "SNAD" quest has no title in the pack files. Its task is an item task that accepts any of these: Snad, Red Snad or Soul Snad.[2]
Because the task accepts any of those items, you only need to get hold of a Snad, a Red Snad or a Soul Snad to complete it.[2]
Which Utilitarian config options matter?
5 parts
Utilitarian has three config files in this pack: client, common and server. Most values are the mod's defaults. The one change the sources confirm is the startup ding sound, covered first below.[5][6][7]
The value the pack changed
The startup ding is enabled via enableDingDongStartupSound. The sound it plays is set by dingDongSound, which this pack sets to mekanism:item.hydraulic. The mod's default is entity.experience_orb.pickup, so this is a pack change.[6]
Startup and log noise (common file)
- noStartupMessagesEnabled is on. The messages it stops are word sequences listed in noStartupMessagesMessages: "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "Ender IO is in alpha", "Mekanism is currently in alpha" and "ExtraStorage".[6]
- logSuppressorEnabled is off. Its lists (logSuppressorContainsMessages, logSuppressorStartsWithMessages, logSuppressorEndsWithMessages and logSuppressorRegexMessages) are all empty. The mod warns against using the regex list unless you know what you're doing.[6]
- disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true, so recipe advancements are disabled.[6]
Gameplay modules (server file)
These are the toggles you're most likely to notice in play. The sources don't list mod defaults for them, so all I can confirm is how the pack sets them.[5]
- hoePlantingEnabled is false, so the Hoe planting module is off.[5]
- betterSleepEnabled is true. This removes the "too far away" and "there are monsters nearby" errors when you try to sleep.[5]
- flowerDuplicationEnabled is true. Small flowers duplicate when bonemealed, just like tall flowers.[5]
- despawnWhenHoldingItems is true, so mobs can despawn even while holding items.[5]
- cursedEarthEnabled, noRaiderEnabled, noSolicitingEnabled and noTramplingEnabled are all true, so those modules are on.[5]
- windChargeAirSupplyEnabled is true, so using a wind charge refills some of your air supply. windChargeAirAmount is 100, the mod default, and a full player air supply is 300.[5]
Numeric values left at the mod default
These numbers match the mod defaults in this pack. Snad growth uses additionalGrowthHeight of 3 extra height for sugar cane and cactus and additionalGrowthTicks of 5 extra growth ticks. dritDamage is 2. The three no-soliciting ranges (noSolicitingChunkRangeBanner, noSolicitingChunkRangeCarpet and noSolicitingChunkRangePlayer) are each 6 chunks. soundMufflerBlockRange is 8 blocks, and fluidHopperTickRate is 10, where a lower number ticks faster.[5]
Client option
potionEffectTransparency controls how transparent the potion effect stink lines are in first person. It is 0.2, the mod default, and accepts 0.0 to 1.0.[7]
