What is Tooltip Overhaul?
2 parts
Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a cleaner, more modern layout. Every time you hover over an item, you get a sharper, clearer tooltip. It's a handy quality-of-life mod for anyone who spends a lot of time reading item info in a big modpack.[1]
The pack includes version 1.5.1 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod is completely client-sided, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]
What you get
- Scrollable tooltips: if a tooltip is too tall for the screen, you can scroll through its content.[1]
- Text wrapping: line breaks are inserted so tooltips don't get too wide.[1]
- Equipment comparison: a toggleable comparison of armor pieces against the one you currently have equipped. You can change the keybind in-game.[1]
- Visual extras: animated frames, overlays, effects, custom borders, vignettes, appear/disappear animations and a 3D item icon when you hover over items.[1]
- Compatibility: it works with JEI, EMI, ModernFix, Flerovium, FTB Quests and Apotheosis, among others.[1]
Customizing it
You can configure tooltips globally or for specific items. Global options live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and reload automatically. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces live in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json, and you can reload those with the /tooltipoverhaul reload command without restarting the game.[1]
If you'd rather not edit files, the mod has an in-game config screen with a live preview that updates as you change the look of your tooltips.[1]
Unverified I couldn't confirm whether this pack changes any of the mod's default settings. I also found no quests or ATM Star path steps that involve the mod, so it isn't tied to any progression stage.
How do you get started with Tooltip Overhaul?
2 parts
Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a clearer layout, so you see it the moment you hover over an item. There is no crafting step to get started, so here is what to try first.[1]
First things to try
- Hover over a few items. When a tooltip is too tall for the screen you can scroll through it, and wide tooltips get line breaks so they stay readable.[1]
- Try the equipment comparison. It is a toggleable feature that compares an armor piece with the one you currently have equipped. You can change its keybind in-game.[1]
- Open the in-game config screen to tweak the look without touching any files. It includes a live preview, so you can watch the tooltip change in real time while you edit specific items.[1]
- To go deeper, edit the global file config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml. It holds options that apply equally to all items, and global settings reload automatically.[1]
- For changes to particular items, tags or mod namespaces, edit config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json. Run the command /tooltipoverhaul reload to apply those changes without restarting the game.[1]
Good to know
The mod can show a rarity or qualifier line just below the item name (the rating element), and the mod's description says it is off by default. It also supports animated frames, overlays, appear and disappear animations for tooltips, and a 3D item icon, all configurable. The in-game config screen lets you reach these settings from within the game.[1]
How does Tooltip Overhaul work?
5 parts
Here's the thing about Tooltip Overhaul: there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation to wire up. It's a completely client-sided visual mod that replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a clearer layout. So 'core mechanics' here means how tooltips behave and how you tune them.[1]
What a tooltip does when you hover
- Scrolling: when a tooltip is taller than the screen, you can scroll through its content. You can turn this off with general.DISABLE_TOOLTIP_SCROLLING, which is false in this pack.[1][3]
- Text wrapping: very wide tooltips get line breaks inserted so they don't stretch across the screen.[1]
- Equipment comparison: hovering a comparable item shows a comparison with your currently equipped piece. By default you hold Left Shift for it, and you can change the keybind in-game. general.ALWAYS_SHOW_COMPARISON is false in this pack, so you still need the key.[1][3]
- 3D icon: a 3D item icon appears when you hover over items. icon.DISABLE_ICON is false here, so it's on.[1][3]
general.SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is true in this pack. That means the mod overrides vanilla tooltips even when there's no item stack, like JEI category buttons or unsupported stacks. To turn the custom tooltip off for specific items or tags, set disableTooltip=true for them in custom_frames.json.[3]
Two layers of configuration
Global settings live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and apply equally to all items. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces go in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json.[1]
Global settings reload automatically. For custom_frames.json changes, run the /tooltipoverhaul reload command instead of restarting the game. The mod also has an in-game config screen with a live preview, so you can see changes to specific items in real time.[1]
Colors and rarity palettes
Each rarity has its own palette of exactly 3 ARGB colors, listed from bright to dark. This pack changed every one of them from the mod defaults, including the common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary and chaos palettes, plus the palette for tooltips without a stack.[3]
- palettes.COMMON_PALETTE_COLORS is set to a gold-toned trio starting at 0xFFFFDD7D in this pack. The mod default is a grey trio starting at 0xFF8C909A.[3]
- palettes.RARE_PALETTE_COLORS starts at 0xFF335FA0 here, versus 0xFF4D9BE8 by default. The pack's blues are darker.[3]
- palettes.CHAOS_PALETTE_COLORS starts at 0xFF9F373A here, versus 0xFFE8483F by default.[3]
- style.DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR is also changed. The pack sets -872415232, while the mod default is #F0000000. Either way it's an ARGB value.[3]
Animations, dividers and layout
animations.TOOLTIP_APPEAR_ANIMATION is set to none in this pack, so tooltips appear without an animation. The available options are none, fade, pop, rise, unfold, zoom, slide, swing, emerge, squash, card and shake. If you switch one on, animations.TOOLTIP_ANIMATION_DURATION sets the length in seconds (lower is snappier). The pack lists it as 0.15, which matches the mod default apart from float rounding.[3]
The icon uses the skew appear animation and a slot_border background in this pack. icon.ICON_ROTATING_SPEED is 0, so the icon doesn't rotate on its own.[3]
The divider line is enabled, uses the gradient type and matches the inner frame color. Its top and bottom padding are both 0. You can change these with divider.DIVIDER_LINE_TYPE, divider.DIVIDER_LINE_COLOR, divider.DIVIDER_LINE_TOP_PADDING and divider.DIVIDER_LINE_BOTTOM_PADDING. The type accepts gradient, static or linear.[3]
The main panel padding is 2 on both axes (layout.MAIN_PANEL_PADDING_X and layout.MAIN_PANEL_PADDING_Y). layout.BEDROCK_CENTERING is off. If you turn it on and the tooltip fits on neither side of the cursor, it centers horizontally on screen and sits above the cursor, or below if there's no room above.[3]
Effects, vignettes and frames
Both effects.EFFECTS and effects.VIGNETTES are empty in this pack, so no particle-style effects or gradient overlays are active. Effects can be chained, for example 'white_dust, nebula'. Each vignette is written in parentheses as (type, position, color, radius, extraPositionX, extraPositionY), and the shape type can be circular or hole.[3]
general.GLOBAL_FRAME_OVERLAY_LOCATION is empty, so no frame overlay is applied to every item. If you set a texture location there, it's overridden whenever the hovered item has its own custom frame.[3]
Unverified The config file has 23 more options that weren't available for this guide, so they aren't covered here. Nothing here confirms whether the pack adds custom frames for specific items through custom_frames.json.
Which Tooltip Overhaul config options matter?
3 parts
Most of Tooltip Overhaul's settings sit at the mod default in this pack. The pack mainly changes the look: the rarity colors and the tooltip background. Everything lives in the main config file, so you can tweak it there or from the in-game config screen.[1][3]
What the pack changed
- style.DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR is set to -872415232. The mod default is #F0000000, so the background color is different from stock.[3]
- palettes.COMMON_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFFFFDD7D, 0xFFFFD040, 0xFFFFC000 (bright to dark). The mod default is 0xFF8C909A, 0xFF4E515A, 0xFF282A30.[3]
- palettes.UNCOMMON_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFF9CA028, 0xFF6A6D18, 0xFF4B4D0E. The mod default is 0xFFC8CE3A, 0xFF8E931F, 0xFF53560E.[3]
- palettes.RARE_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFF335FA0, 0xFF193A6D, 0xFF0A1D38. The mod default is 0xFF4D9BE8, 0xFF2B66B5, 0xFF123A6B.[3]
- palettes.EPIC_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFFA02283, 0xFF691356, 0xFF3C0730. The mod default is 0xFFB14BE0, 0xFF7A28A8, 0xFF431463.[3]
- palettes.LEGENDARY_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFFA0803C, 0xFF815F19, 0xFF372808. The mod default is 0xFFE8B84A, 0xFFB5832A, 0xFF6B4A12.[3]
- palettes.CHAOS_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFF9F373A, 0xFF81191B, 0xFF370809. The mod default is 0xFFE8483F, 0xFFB5251F, 0xFF5E0F0C.[3]
- palettes.NO_STACK_PALETTE_COLORS is 0xFF969696, 0xFF575757, 0xFF3C3C3C. This palette is used for tooltips without a stack. The mod default is 0xFF8C909A, 0xFF4E515A, 0xFF282A30.[3]
- animations.TOOLTIP_ANIMATION_DURATION is 0.15 seconds. The pack flags it as changed, but the mod default is 0.15000000596046448, so in practice it is the same value.[3]
Each palette takes exactly 3 ARGB colors, listed from bright to dark. palettes.CUSTOM_RARITY_PALETTE_COLORS is not changed. It is the fallback for rarities added by other mods, and it matches the mod's legendary default rather than this pack's legendary palette.[3]
Options you might want to change yourself
These are all at the mod default in this pack, so they are the first things to flip if you want a different feel.[3]
- animations.TOOLTIP_APPEAR_ANIMATION is "none", so tooltips appear with no animation. The options are none, fade, pop, rise, unfold, zoom, slide, swing, emerge, squash, card and shake.[3]
- general.ALWAYS_SHOW_COMPARISON is false. You have to hold the compare key (Left Shift by default) to see the equipment comparison. Set it to true to show it all the time.[3]
- text.SHOW_MOD_NAME is false. Turn it on to add the name of the mod that owns the hovered item as the last tooltip line.[3]
- text.SHOW_RATING is false, so the rating text is hidden.[3]
- style.SHOW_TOOLTIP_SHADOW is false, so the tooltip shadow is off.[3]
- general.DISABLE_TOOLTIP_SCROLLING is false, so scrolling is enabled.[3]
- general.SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is true. Tooltips are overridden even when no item stack is present, such as JEI category buttons.[3]
- layout.TOOLTIP_POSITION_X and layout.TOOLTIP_POSITION_Y are both 0. These are pixel offsets for the tooltip position.[3]
- preview.ARMOR_ITEMS_RENDERER and preview.TIERED_ITEMS_RENDERER are both true. Armor and tiered items such as swords get a 3D preview on the left of the tooltip.[3]
- effects.EFFECTS and effects.VIGNETTES are both empty, so there are no global effects or vignettes.[3]
Per-item frames
The pack also ships a frames file that gives specific items their own frame. For example, Dragon Egg and Enchanted Golden Apple share an amethyst frame with the metal_shining effect, alongside several of the pack's own cores and the portal gun. The Cataclysm weapons The Incinerator, Ceraunus and Soul Render get their own cataclysm frame.[4]
The listed Celestisynth weapons have scrolling disabled through the disableScrolling flag in that same file.[4]
What changed in Tooltip Overhaul between versions?
4 parts
FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Tooltip Overhaul 1.5.1, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]
1.5.1 (the version in this pack)
- Added a global config option to always enable the equipment comparison feature.[5]
- The mod is no longer loaded on a dedicated server, to preserve modpack parity.[5]
- Fixed a crash with certain appear animations (the ones that make the icon transparent over time) when rendering items with a foil texture.[5]
1.4.x fixes
- 1.4.4: fixed Oracle Index tooltip lines not showing when Tooltip Overhaul was in the same pack.[6]
- 1.4.3: fixed a crash when rendering an armor stand in any tooltip, caused by yyzsbackpack.[7]
- 1.4.2: an attempt to fix mouse scroll getting stuck in certain cases.[8]
1.4.0, the big rewrite
This release came with a thank-you for a million downloads and a complete internal rewrite. The changelog I have for it is cut off, so this is only part of the list.[9]
- Alignment fixes: tooltip components now adapt to the tooltip's proportions when elements are moved, removed or disabled. Scrolling text is now clipped properly instead of whole lines disappearing.[9]
- New visuals: a vignette style with 2 variants (circular and circular_hole), 7 new effects, 12 new frames, a glow icon background type and 2 new divider line types (static and linear).[9]
- Effects can now be set globally via config and chained together.[9]
- The /tooltipoverhaul reload command reloads custom_frames.json files without restarting the game.[9]
- An in-game config screen was added. On Fabric it needs ModMenu to open, but ModMenu isn't required to run the mod.[9]
- New config options cover the default position of the main tooltip, divider padding, preview panel size, tooltip drop shadow, and the preview model (armor_stand or player_skin).[9]
- The preview panel now repositions itself when there isn't enough space to the left (configurable), and its renderers auto-scale to the panel size.[9]
1.3.0
- Added an experimental equipment compare feature. You can change its key mapping in the in-game controls menu.[10]
- Fixed the divider line color not adapting correctly for certain items with a custom frame.[10]
- Fixed rating text following the cursor position instead of the overall size of the tooltip.[10]
