What is Tooltip Overhaul?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a cleaner, more modern layout. Every time you hover over an item, you get a sharper, clearer tooltip. It's a handy quality-of-life mod for anyone who spends a lot of time reading item info in a big modpack.[1]

The pack includes version 1.5.1 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod is completely client-sided, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]

What you get

  • Scrollable tooltips: if a tooltip is too tall for the screen, you can scroll through its content.[1]
  • Text wrapping: line breaks are inserted so tooltips don't get too wide.[1]
  • Equipment comparison: a toggleable comparison of armor pieces against the one you currently have equipped. You can change the keybind in-game.[1]
  • Visual extras: animated frames, overlays, effects, custom borders, vignettes, appear/disappear animations and a 3D item icon when you hover over items.[1]
  • Compatibility: it works with JEI, EMI, ModernFix, Flerovium, FTB Quests and Apotheosis, among others.[1]

Customizing it

You can configure tooltips globally or for specific items. Global options live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and reload automatically. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces live in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json, and you can reload those with the /tooltipoverhaul reload command without restarting the game.[1]

If you'd rather not edit files, the mod has an in-game config screen with a live preview that updates as you change the look of your tooltips.[1]

Tip: The rating element, which shows a rarity or qualifier just below the item name, is configurable and off by default in the mod itself. If you like that kind of info at a glance, it's worth a look in the config screen.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm whether this pack changes any of the mod's default settings. I also found no quests or ATM Star path steps that involve the mod, so it isn't tied to any progression stage.

How do you get started with Tooltip Overhaul?

4 parts

Tooltip Overhaul is a visual mod that replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a clearer layout. You see it the moment you hover over an item in your inventory. So your first steps are knowing what it changes and where its settings live.[1]

What you get as soon as you hover

  • Scrollable tooltips: when a tooltip is too tall for the screen, you can scroll through its content. general.DISABLE_TOOLTIP_SCROLLING is false in this pack, so scrolling is on.[1][3]
  • Text wrapping: long lines get line breaks so tooltips do not get too wide.[1]
  • Equipment comparison: hovering an armor piece lets you compare it with the one you are wearing. Hold the compare key (Left Shift by default, and you can change it in-game). general.ALWAYS_SHOW_COMPARISON is false in this pack, so you do need to hold the key.[1][3]
  • A 3D icon appears when you hover over items, and armor and tiered items such as swords and axes get a 3D preview on the left side of the tooltip. Both previews are enabled in this pack.[1][3]

What this pack changed

The pack recolors the tooltip frames. COMMON, UNCOMMON and RARE items, plus tooltips without a stack, all use the same blue palette of "0x0062aa, 0x004273, 0x003053" (bright to dark). The mod's own defaults give each of those a different color scheme, so do not expect rarity colors to tell these apart here. The EPIC, LEGENDARY and CHAOS palettes keep the mod defaults.[3]

Several extras are left off, the same as in the mod's defaults. The rating line (text.SHOW_RATING), the mod name line (text.SHOW_MOD_NAME) and the tooltip shadow (style.SHOW_TOOLTIP_SHADOW) are all false. The appear animation (animations.TOOLTIP_APPEAR_ANIMATION) is set to none.[3]

Special frames

The pack's custom frame list gives a few items their own look. Dragon Egg and Enchanted Golden Apple get an amethyst frame with a metal shining effect. The Incinerator, Ceraunus and Soul Render from L_Ender's Cataclysm get a Cataclysm frame, also with metal shining.[4]

Where to tweak things

There are two places to configure tooltips. Global options live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and apply to every item, and they reload automatically. Settings for particular items, tags or mods live in frames. After editing that file, run /tooltipoverhaul reload so you do not have to restart the game.[1][4]

The mod also has an in-game config screen, with a live preview for item-specific changes, so you can adjust things without opening the files.[1]

Tip: If you want vanilla-style tooltips back for a specific item, edit custom_frames.json and set disableTooltip=true for that item or tag. general.SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is true here, so the custom style also applies to things like JEI category buttons.[3]

How does Tooltip Overhaul work?

5 parts

Tooltip Overhaul is different from most mods in the pack: there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation to set up. It is a completely client-sided mod that replaces the vanilla tooltip with a cleaner layout, so everything it does happens on your screen when you hover an item.[1]

Two layers of configuration

The mod is configured in two ways. Global settings live in the main TOML file and apply equally to every item. Specific settings for particular items, tags or namespaces live in the custom frames JSON file. Global settings reload automatically, while changes to the specific file need the command /tooltipoverhaul reload, with no game restart.[1]

There is also an in-game config screen, so you can change things without opening the files. For the specific settings it includes a live preview that updates in real time.[1]

What a tooltip is made of

Hovering an item gives you a framed panel with a 3D icon, a divider line under the title and the usual text lines. When a tooltip is too tall for the screen you can scroll it, and long lines are wrapped so the tooltip does not get too wide.[1][3]

Previews and comparison

Armor pieces and tiered items such as swords and axes get a 3D preview in a second panel on the left of the tooltip. Both previews are on in this pack. The panel size is 30 by 60 pixels (preview.SECOND_PANEL_SIZE_X and preview.SECOND_PANEL_SIZE_Y). If there is no room on the left, the panel moves to the right automatically. The preview model is the armor stand rather than your player skin.[3]

Armor can also be compared with what you are currently wearing. You hold the compare key to see it (Left Shift by default, and you can change the keybind in-game). general.ALWAYS_SHOW_COMPARISON is false here, so you do need to hold the key.[1][3]

Colors changed by the pack

Each rarity has a palette of exactly 3 colors, from bright to dark. This pack changed the common, uncommon, rare and no-stack palettes so they all use the same blue set: 0x0062aa, 0x004273, 0x003053. The mod's own defaults are different colors for each of them. The epic, legendary, chaos and custom rarity palettes are still at the mod defaults.[3]

Tip: Because the common, uncommon and rare palettes are identical in this pack, those three rarities look the same on a tooltip. If you want them to look different again, edit the palette options in the TOML file.[3]

Custom frames in this pack

The pack's custom frames file (frames) gives a few items their own look.[4]

  • Dragon Egg and Enchanted Golden Apple use the amethyst frame with a static border, the metal_shining effect and the color #C551C3.[4]
  • The Incinerator, Ceraunus and Soul Render (from L_Ender's Cataclysm) use the cataclysm frame with a static border, the metal_shining effect and the color #3D3A5E.[4]
  • The file also defines diamond, amber and silver frames, but none of them lists any items. The silver frame uses a gradient border with the colors #A9A9A9, #999999 and #8F8F8F.[4]

general.GLOBAL_FRAME_OVERLAY_LOCATION can apply one frame texture to every item, but an item with its own custom frame overrides it. It is empty in this pack, so no frame is applied globally.[3]

Tip: general.SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is true, so the mod also restyles tooltips that have no item stack, such as JEI category buttons. To turn the custom tooltip off for specific items or tags, set disableTooltip to true for them in the custom frames file.[3]

Which Tooltip Overhaul config options matter?

3 parts

Most of this pack's tooltip settings are the mod defaults. The changes are all about colour, plus a custom frames file. Here is what's different and what you can tweak yourself.[3][4]

What the pack changed

Each palette takes exactly 3 colours, from bright to dark. The epic, legendary, chaos and custom rarity palettes were not touched, so they keep the mod defaults.[3]

Options you might want to change

Everything below is at the mod default in this pack, so these are the switches to flip if you want a different feel.[3]

Tip: general.SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is true, so the custom tooltip also shows where there is no item stack, such as JEI category buttons. To turn the custom tooltip off for specific items or tags, edit the custom frames file and set disableTooltip=true for them.[3]

Custom frames

The pack ships its own frames list. It gives Dragon Egg and Enchanted Golden Apple an amethyst frame with a static border and the metal_shining effect.[4]

Three Cataclysm weapons, The Incinerator, Ceraunus and Soul Render, get a Cataclysm frame, also with a static border and metal_shining. Seven Celestisynth weapons have tooltip scrolling disabled in that file.[4]

The file also defines diamond, amber and silver frames, but no items are listed for them, so they are not applied to anything by default.[4]

What changed in Tooltip Overhaul between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Tooltip Overhaul 1.5.1. The mod was first included in the pack in version 1.0.3 or earlier.[5]

Tooltip Overhaul 1.5.1

This is the version you're running in this pack. Here is what the mod's own changelog lists for it:[5][6]

  • A new global config option lets you always enable the equipment comparison functionality.[6]
  • The mod no longer loads when it's present on a dedicated server, which keeps modpack parity.[6]
  • Fixed a crash: some appear animations (the ones that make the icon fade in over time) could crash the game when rendering items with a foil texture.[6]
Tip: If you run a dedicated server for the pack, the mod doesn't load there as of 1.5.1. This is done to preserve modpack parity.[6]
