What is Tooltip Overhaul?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a cleaner, more modern layout. Every time you hover over an item, you get a sharper, clearer tooltip. It's a handy quality-of-life mod for anyone who spends a lot of time reading item info in a big modpack.[1]

The pack includes version 1.5.1 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod is completely client-sided, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]

What you get

  • Scrollable tooltips: if a tooltip is too tall for the screen, you can scroll through its content.[1]
  • Text wrapping: line breaks are inserted so tooltips don't get too wide.[1]
  • Equipment comparison: a toggleable comparison of armor pieces against the one you currently have equipped. You can change the keybind in-game.[1]
  • Visual extras: animated frames, overlays, effects, custom borders, vignettes, appear/disappear animations and a 3D item icon when you hover over items.[1]
  • Compatibility: it works with JEI, EMI, ModernFix, Flerovium, FTB Quests and Apotheosis, among others.[1]

Customizing it

You can configure tooltips globally or for specific items. Global options live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and reload automatically. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces live in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json, and you can reload those with the /tooltipoverhaul reload command without restarting the game.[1]

If you'd rather not edit files, the mod has an in-game config screen with a live preview that updates as you change the look of your tooltips.[1]

Tip: The rating element, which shows a rarity or qualifier just below the item name, is configurable and off by default in the mod itself. If you like that kind of info at a glance, it's worth a look in the config screen.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm whether this pack changes any of the mod's default settings. I also found no quests or ATM Star path steps that involve the mod, so it isn't tied to any progression stage.

How do you get started with Tooltip Overhaul?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a clearer layout, so you see it the moment you hover over an item. There is no crafting step to get started, so here is what to try first.[1]

First things to try

  1. Hover over a few items. When a tooltip is too tall for the screen you can scroll through it, and wide tooltips get line breaks so they stay readable.[1]
  2. Try the equipment comparison. It is a toggleable feature that compares an armor piece with the one you currently have equipped. You can change its keybind in-game.[1]
  3. Open the in-game config screen to tweak the look without touching any files. It includes a live preview, so you can watch the tooltip change in real time while you edit specific items.[1]
  4. To go deeper, edit the global file config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml. It holds options that apply equally to all items, and global settings reload automatically.[1]
  5. For changes to particular items, tags or mod namespaces, edit config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json. Run the command /tooltipoverhaul reload to apply those changes without restarting the game.[1]

Good to know

The mod can show a rarity or qualifier line just below the item name (the rating element), and the mod's description says it is off by default. It also supports animated frames, overlays, appear and disappear animations for tooltips, and a 3D item icon, all configurable. The in-game config screen lets you reach these settings from within the game.[1]

Tip: Use the in-game config screen for quick visual tweaks. Use the config files when you want to target specific items, tags or namespaces.[1]

How does Tooltip Overhaul work?

4 parts

Tooltip Overhaul doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation, so there's nothing to build or pipe here. It's a completely client-sided mod that replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a new layout. The mechanics worth knowing are how the tooltip is drawn and which settings control it.[1]

What the tooltip does

  • Scrolling: when a tooltip is taller than the screen, you can scroll through it. You can turn this off with DISABLE_TOOLTIP_SCROLLING, which is off by default in the pack.[1][3]
  • Text wrapping: very wide tooltips get line breaks inserted so they stay narrow.[1]
  • Equipment comparison: a toggleable comparison of an armor piece against the one you currently have equipped. You can change its keybind in-game.[1]
  • 3D icon: hovering an item shows a 3D icon. DISABLE_ICON is false in the pack, so the icon is shown, and ICON_APPEAR_ANIMATION is set to skew.[1][3]
  • Divider line: a line under the title, enabled in the pack. DIVIDER_LINE_TYPE is gradient, and DIVIDER_LINE_COLOR is match_inner_frame_color.[3]
  • Rating text: a rarity or qualifier line just under the item name. It's off by default, and SHOW_RATING is still false in the pack.[1][3]

The preview panel

Armor pieces and tiered items such as swords and axes get a 3D preview in a second panel beside the tooltip. ARMOR_ITEMS_RENDERER and TIERED_ITEMS_RENDERER are both true in the pack, the same as the mod defaults.[3]

Rarity colors

Each rarity has a palette of exactly three ARGB colors, listed from bright to dark. The pack changes the common palette to 0xFFFFDD7D, 0xFFFFD040, 0xFFFFC000 (COMMON_PALETTE_COLORS). The mod's default for it is 0xFF969696, 0xFF575757, 0xFF3C3C3C.[3]

The pack also changes DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR to -872415232. The mod default is #F0000000. The rare, epic, legendary and chaos palettes (RARE_PALETTE_COLORS, EPIC_PALETTE_COLORS, LEGENDARY_PALETTE_COLORS, CHAOS_PALETTE_COLORS) are all left at the mod defaults.[3]

Global vs. per-item settings

There are two layers of configuration. The global file, config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml, applies equally to every item, and changes to it reload automatically. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces live in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json. Reload those with the /tooltipoverhaul reload command, no restart needed.[1]

The mod also has an in-game config screen with a live preview for per-item changes, so you can see your edits as you make them.[1]

Tip: SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is true, so the custom look also covers tooltips with no item stack behind them, like JEI category buttons. To keep the vanilla tooltip for specific items or tags, set disableTooltip=true for them in custom_frames.json.[3]

Which Tooltip Overhaul config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: Tooltip Overhaul in this pack is almost entirely on the mod's defaults. Only two options in the main config file were changed, so those are the ones to know first. The rest of this section covers the options you're most likely to tweak, then the pack's custom frames.[3]

What the pack changed

  • DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR is set to -872415232 in this pack. The mod default is "#F0000000". This is the default tooltip background color in ARGB format.[3]
  • COMMON_PALETTE_COLORS is set to "0xFFFFDD7D, 0xFFFFD040, 0xFFFFC000" in this pack. The mod default is "0xFF969696, 0xFF575757, 0xFF3C3C3C". It is the 3-color palette (bright to dark) for COMMON rarity items, so this is why common items look different here than in a stock install.[3]

The other rarity palettes (UNCOMMON_PALETTE_COLORS, RARE_PALETTE_COLORS, EPIC_PALETTE_COLORS, LEGENDARY_PALETTE_COLORS and CHAOS_PALETTE_COLORS) are all left at the mod defaults. If you edit a palette, remember it must contain exactly 3 ARGB colors.[3]

Options you might want to adjust (all at mod default)

Custom frames

The pack also ships a frames list that gives specific items their own look. A custom frame overrides the global frame overlay option for those items.[3][4]

  • Amethyst frame with the metal_shining effect: minecraft:dragon_egg, minecraft:enchanted_golden_apple, ftb:portal_gun and the ftb purple, red, orange and blue cores.[4]
  • Emerald frame with the cinder effect: gateways:gate_pearl.[4]
  • Diamond frame: minecraft:end_crystal, minecraft:beacon, minecraft:conduit, minecraft:golden_apple and the music discs.[4]
  • Amber frame: items like minecraft:elytra, minecraft:nether_star, minecraft:enchanted_book and minecraft:totem_of_undying.[4]
  • Cataclysm frame with the metal_shining effect: cataclysm:the_incinerator, cataclysm:ceraunus and cataclysm:soul_render.[4]
  • Seven Celestisynth weapons (frostbound, keres, crescentia, breezebreaker, poltergeist, aquaflora and rainfall_serenity) have disableScrolling set to true, so their tooltips don't scroll.[4]
Tip: To turn the custom tooltip off for particular items, edit custom_frames.json and set disableTooltip=true for those items or tags.[3]

What changed in Tooltip Overhaul between versions?

1 part

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.16.0 ships Tooltip Overhaul 1.4.4, the NeoForge 1.21.1 build. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier, so the changes below are the mod's own releases, newest first.[5]

  • 1.4.4 (the version in this pack): fixed an issue where Oracle Index tooltip lines wouldn't show when Tooltip Overhaul was in the same pack. The author asks to be contacted if any other issues come up.[5][6]
  • 1.4.3: fixed a crash that could happen when rendering an armor stand in any tooltip, caused by yyzsbackpack.[7]
  • 1.4.2: an attempt to fix mouse scroll getting stuck in certain cases.[8]
  • 1.4.0: the big one, released alongside a thank you for a million downloads. It is a complete internal rewrite, with the mod now structured in a more modular and maintainable way.[9]
  • 1.3.0: added an experimental equipment compare feature, with the key mapping changeable in the in-game controls menu. It also fixed the divider line color not adapting correctly for certain items with a custom frame, and fixed rating text adapting to the cursor position instead of the overall tooltip size.[10]

What 1.4.0 changed

Alignment issues were fixed, so tooltip components now adapt to the tooltip's proportions when elements are moved, removed or disabled. Scrolling was fixed too, and text is now properly clipped while scrolling instead of whole lines disappearing.[9]

There is a lot of new visual content: a new vignette style (with circular and circular_hole variants), 7 new effects (magic_orbs, echo, speed_lines, galaxy, nebula, spiral and white_dust) and 12 new frames. Effects can now be set globally via config and chained together.[9]

Dividers got 2 new line types, static and linear, and the divider type is now configurable. A new glow icon background type was added, which matches the inner frame color.[9]

Quality-of-life additions include an in-game config screen and a /tooltipoverhaul reload command that reloads custom_frames.json files without restarting the game. The preview panel now repositions itself when there isn't enough space to the left (configurable) and auto-scales its renderers to the panel size.[9]

New config options cover the default position of the main tooltip, padding and background color for empty tooltips, divider line top and bottom padding, preview panel size, tooltip drop shadow and the preview model (armor_stand or player_skin). You can also choose whether the player skin preview uses your own skin or a dummy skin. Config entries that no longer exist are now purged automatically.[9]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so it is unverified whether the pack changed any Tooltip Overhaul settings between its own releases. The 1.4.0 changelog was also cut off, so it may contain further changes not listed here.
