What is Tooltip Overhaul?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a cleaner, more modern layout. Every time you hover over an item, you get a sharper, clearer tooltip. It's a handy quality-of-life mod for anyone who spends a lot of time reading item info in a big modpack.[1]

The pack includes version 1.5.1 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod is completely client-sided, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]

What you get

  • Scrollable tooltips: if a tooltip is too tall for the screen, you can scroll through its content.[1]
  • Text wrapping: line breaks are inserted so tooltips don't get too wide.[1]
  • Equipment comparison: a toggleable comparison of armor pieces against the one you currently have equipped. You can change the keybind in-game.[1]
  • Visual extras: animated frames, overlays, effects, custom borders, vignettes, appear/disappear animations and a 3D item icon when you hover over items.[1]
  • Compatibility: it works with JEI, EMI, ModernFix, Flerovium, FTB Quests and Apotheosis, among others.[1]

Customizing it

You can configure tooltips globally or for specific items. Global options live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and reload automatically. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces live in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json, and you can reload those with the /tooltipoverhaul reload command without restarting the game.[1]

If you'd rather not edit files, the mod has an in-game config screen with a live preview that updates as you change the look of your tooltips.[1]

Tip: The rating element, which shows a rarity or qualifier just below the item name, is configurable and off by default in the mod itself. If you like that kind of info at a glance, it's worth a look in the config screen.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm whether this pack changes any of the mod's default settings. I also found no quests or ATM Star path steps that involve the mod, so it isn't tied to any progression stage.

How do you get started with Tooltip Overhaul?

3 parts

Tooltip Overhaul replaces the vanilla tooltip system with a clearer layout, so you see it the moment you hover over an item. There is nothing to set up first, so the steps below are about getting the most out of what you see.[1]

First steps

  1. Hover over a few items and look at the new layout. If a tooltip is too tall for the screen, you can scroll through it. Overflowing tooltips also scroll by themselves after three seconds, and scrolling manually stops that until the tooltip changes (general.AUTO_SCROLL_TOOLTIPS).[1][3]
  2. Hover over armor or a tiered item such as a sword or an axe. The mod can show a 3D preview on the left side of the tooltip, controlled by preview.ARMOR_ITEMS_RENDERER and preview.TIERED_ITEMS_RENDERER.[3]
  3. Try the equipment comparison on armor. Hold the compare key, which is Left Shift by default (you can change the keybind in-game). If you want the comparison to always show, turn on general.ALWAYS_SHOW_COMPARISON.[1][3]
  4. If you want more information in tooltips, these options are all off right now: text.SHOW_MOD_NAME, text.SHOW_REGISTRY_NAME, text.SHOW_ITEM_DURABILITY and text.SHOW_RATING.[3]

What this pack changes

The pack sets its own colors for the rarity palettes (common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary, chaos and the no-stack palette), and it also changes the default tooltip background color (style.DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR). If your tooltips look different from a plain install of the mod, that's why.[3]

The appear animation is set to "none" (animations.TOOLTIP_APPEAR_ANIMATION), so tooltips show up with no animation. The animation duration is 0.15 seconds (animations.TOOLTIP_ANIMATION_DURATION), which is the pack's value for the setting.[3]

Tweaking it yourself

Global settings live in config/tooltipoverhaul/tooltipoverhaul.toml and apply equally to all items. They reload automatically. The mod also has an in-game config screen, so you can adjust things without editing files, and it includes a live preview for item-specific changes.[1]

Settings for particular items, tags or mods go in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json. Use the command /tooltipoverhaul reload to apply changes to that file without restarting the game. To turn off the custom tooltip for specific items, set disableTooltip=true for those items or tags in that same file.[1][3]

Unverified The per-item frame overrides this pack ships are in config/tooltipoverhaul/custom_frames.json, and the sources here do not show its contents, so which items have custom frames is unverified.

Tip: If the animations or moving effects distract you, turn on effects.REDUCED_MOTION. It freezes decorative effects and disables tooltip and icon movement.[3]

How does Tooltip Overhaul work?

6 parts

Tooltip Overhaul has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation. It is a client-side mod that replaces the vanilla tooltip with its own layout, so the "mechanics" here are about how tooltips behave and how you configure them. Nothing it does affects the world or other players.[1]

Two layers of configuration

Settings come in two layers. Global options that apply equally to every item live in the tooltipoverhaul.toml file. Settings for particular items, tags or mod namespaces live in custom_frames.json. Global changes reload automatically, but after editing custom_frames.json you run the /tooltipoverhaul reload command instead of restarting the game.[1]

The mod also has an in-game config screen with a live preview, so you can tweak things visually without touching the files. general.REMEMBER_LAST_PAGE is on in this pack, so the screen and the frame editor reopen where you left them until the game closes.[1][3]

Layout, scrolling and pinning

layout.TOOLTIP_LAYOUT can be classic, badge, floating or compact. The pack keeps the default, classic, which puts the icon inside the tooltip.[3]

Tooltips that are too tall can be scrolled. With general.AUTO_SCROLL_TOOLTIPS on (it is), an overflowing tooltip scrolls by itself after three seconds. If you scroll manually, auto-scroll stays off until the tooltip changes. layout.MAX_TOOLTIP_HEIGHT and layout.MAX_TOOLTIP_WIDTH are both 100, meaning a percentage of the screen size. Long lines are wrapped so tooltips don't get too wide.[1][3]

If you don't want scrolling at all, general.DISABLE_TOOLTIP_SCROLLING turns it off. It is false in this pack, so scrolling works.[3]

You can pin tooltips. general.MAX_PINNED_TOOLTIPS is 3 in this pack (the allowed range is 1 to 6), and pinning past the limit replaces the oldest pinned tooltip.[3]

Equipment comparison shows a comparable item next to what you currently have equipped. By default you hold the compare key, Left Shift, to see it. general.ALWAYS_SHOW_COMPARISON is off here, so you still need the key. You can change the keybind in-game.[1][3]

general.SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK is on, so the mod also restyles tooltips that have no item stack, such as JEI category buttons. To turn the custom tooltip off for specific items or tags, set disableTooltip=true for them in custom_frames.json.[3]

Animations

The pack leaves tooltip animations off: animations.TOOLTIP_APPEAR_ANIMATION is none, and animations.TOOLTIP_DISAPPEAR_ANIMATION is match_appear, which copies whatever the appear animation is. Options include fade, pop, rise, unfold, zoom, slide, swing, emerge, squash, card and shake. If you enable one, animations.TOOLTIP_ANIMATION_DURATION is 0.15 seconds in this pack, and animations.TOOLTIP_APPEAR_DELAY (0 here, so tooltips show immediately) adds a wait before the tooltip shows.[3]

animations.TOOLTIP_ANIMATE_ON_SWITCH is false, so moving straight from one item to another doesn't replay the animation. The icon has its own appear animation, icon.ICON_APPEAR_ANIMATION, set to skew. effects.REDUCED_MOTION is false; turning it on freezes decorative effects and disables tooltip and icon movement, including custom frame overrides.[3]

The item icon can be hidden with icon.DISABLE_ICON, which is false here. Its background type, icon.ICON_BACKGROUND_TYPE, is slot_border (the options are focus, void, slot, slot_border and glow). icon.ICON_BORDER_STYLE is style_1, which leaves out the corner pixels, while style_2 fills them for square corners. icon.ICON_BACKGROUND_COLOR and icon.ICON_BORDER_COLOR are both "default", meaning the original color of each background type.[3]

Effects, dividers and vignettes

effects.EFFECTS is empty globally, so no effect runs on every tooltip. You can chain several by name, for example white_dust and nebula. effects.EFFECT_INTENSITY works as an opacity multiplier (zero hides effects) and effects.EFFECT_SPEED as a speed multiplier (zero freezes them). Both are 1 in this pack.[3]

effects.EFFECT_DENSITY is a particle density multiplier and is 1 in this pack. effects.EFFECTS_BEHIND_TEXT is false, so effects are drawn on top of everything. Turn it on to render them right over the background, behind the text, icon and frame.[3]

Vignettes add gradient shading inside the tooltip background. Each entry is written in parentheses as (type, position, color, radius, extraPositionX, extraPositionY), and several can be separated by commas. The global effects.VIGNETTES option is empty here.[3]

The line under the item name is the divider. divider.DIVIDER_LINE_TYPE is gradient and divider.DIVIDER_LINE_COLOR is match_inner_frame_color, so it follows the inner frame color.[3]

You can remove the divider entirely with divider.DISABLE_DIVIDER_LINE (false here). divider.DIVIDER_LINE_TOP_PADDING and divider.DIVIDER_LINE_BOTTOM_PADDING add extra space above and below it, and both are 0 in this pack.[3]

Rarity palettes and background

Each rarity has its own palette, for example palettes.COMMON_PALETTE_COLORS, and each palette must specify exactly 3 ARGB colors, listed from bright to dark.[3]

The pack changed these from the mod defaults: common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary and chaos, plus the palette for tooltips without a stack, palettes.NO_STACK_PALETTE_COLORS. The default background in style.DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR was changed too, from the mod default of #F0000000.[3]

Items with a non-vanilla rarity, such as custom rarities added by other mods, use palettes.CUSTOM_RARITY_PALETTE_COLORS, which the pack leaves at the mod default (the same colors as the legendary default).[3]

Custom frames in the pack

Per-item looks are defined in the frames list. Each entry names the items it applies to and can set a frame texture, border type, gradient colors, a special effect and a priority. An item that matches a custom frame overrides the global frame overlay option, general.GLOBAL_FRAME_OVERLAY_LOCATION, which is empty in this pack.[3][4]

The pack's list differs from the mod's defaults file. Its first entry is an amethyst frame with the metal_shining effect, shared by Dragon Egg and Enchanted Golden Apple as in the defaults, and the pack adds Portal Gun and the purple, red, orange and blue cores to it. It also adds an emerald frame with the cinder effect for Gate Pearl.[4][5]

The defaults file has a silver frame covering many vanilla items (netherite and diamond gear, Ender Pearl and others) and a bubbles entry for Trident. Neither appears in the pack's custom_frames.json, so those items use the global look here.[4][5]

The rest of the pack's list matches the defaults. The diamond frame covers Beacon, Golden Apple and the music discs. The amber frame covers Elytra, Nether Star and Totem Of Undying, among others. There are also frames for Celestisynth weapons, Cataclysm weapons and a few other modded items.[4][5]

Tip: To restyle one item without touching everything else, add or edit an entry in custom_frames.json and run /tooltipoverhaul reload in game. You don't need to restart.[1][4]

Which Tooltip Overhaul config options matter?

3 parts

Tooltip Overhaul has a huge config, but this pack leaves most of it at the mod defaults. What it changed is the rarity color palettes, the default background color and the animation duration entry. Everything lives in the main config file, plus a separate file for per-item frames.[3]

What the pack changed

Each rarity palette takes exactly 3 ARGB colors, listed from bright to dark. The pack overrides seven of them, so tooltips look different from a plain install of the mod:[3]

palettes.CUSTOM_RARITY_PALETTE_COLORS, used for items with a non-vanilla rarity, is not changed. It stays at "0xFFE8B84A, 0xFFB5832A, 0xFF6B4A12".[3]

The pack also changes style.DEFAULT_BACKGROUND_COLOR. It is set to -872415232 here, while the mod default is "#F0000000".[3]

animations.TOOLTIP_ANIMATION_DURATION is flagged as changed too, but only by float rounding. The pack writes 0.15 and the mod default is listed as 0.15000000596046448, so you will not notice a difference in game.[3]

Options you may want to tweak (pack values)

These are all left at the mod default in this pack, so they are a good starting point if you want to customize your tooltips:[3]

Custom frames

Per-item frames live in frames. Compared with the defaults file next to it, the pack's version adds a few things. The amethyst-textured frame with the metal shining effect also covers Portal Gun, Purple Core, Red Core, Orange Core and Blue Core. There is also a frame for Gate Pearl with the emerald texture and the cinder effect.[4][5]

The pack's file does not contain two entries from the defaults file: the silver frame (netherite and diamond gear, ender pearls and similar) and the bubbles frame for the trident. Those items use the normal tooltip styling here.[4][5]

Tip: If you want the custom tooltip turned off for specific items, edit custom_frames.json and set disableTooltip=true for those items or tags. The config comment for SHOW_TOOLTIP_WITHOUT_STACK points to this.[3]

What changed in Tooltip Overhaul between versions?

5 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 ships Tooltip Overhaul 2.0.2 (the NeoForge 1.21.1 build), and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[6]

Unverified Pack changelog entries for this mod aren't available, so which StoneBlock 4 release moved to which Tooltip Overhaul version is unverified.

2.0.2 (the version in this pack)

  • Category buttons were added inside the custom frames screens to make them easier to use.[7]
  • The shadow corner type now matches the background's corner type.[7]

1.5.1

  • A global config option was added to always enable the equipment comparison functionality.[8]
  • The mod no longer loads when it is present on a dedicated server, to preserve modpack parity.[8]
  • Fixed a crash where some appear animations (the ones that made the icon transparent over time) broke rendering of items with a foil texture.[8]

1.4.x fixes

  • 1.4.4 fixed an issue where Oracle Index tooltip lines wouldn't show when Tooltip Overhaul was in the same pack.[9]
  • 1.4.3 fixed a crash when rendering an armor stand in any tooltip, caused by yyzsbackpack.[10]
  • 1.4.2 attempted to fix mouse scrolling getting stuck in certain cases.[11]

1.4.0, the big rewrite

This was a complete internal rewrite. Tooltip components now adapt correctly to the tooltip's proportions when elements are moved, removed or disabled, and scrolling now clips text properly instead of making whole lines disappear. The changelog I have is cut off, so this is only the first part of the list.[12]

  • A new vignette style with two variants: circular and circular_hole.[12]
  • A /tooltipoverhaul reload command that reloads custom_frames.json files without restarting the game.[12]
  • An in-game config screen. On Fabric it needs ModMenu to open, but ModMenu isn't required to run the mod.[12]
  • 7 new effects (magic_orbs, echo, speed_lines, galaxy, nebula, spiral, white_dust) and 12 new frames. Effects can now be set globally via config and chained together.[12]
  • Two new divider line types, static and linear, and a new glow icon background type that matches the inner frame color.[12]
  • New config options for the main tooltip position, padding and background color of empty tooltips, divider padding, preview panel size, and tooltip drop shadow.[12]
  • The preview model can now be an armor_stand or a player_skin, and the player skin can be your own or a dummy skin.[12]
  • The preview panel repositions itself when there isn't enough space to the left (configurable), and its renderers auto-scale to the panel size.[12]
  • Config entries that no longer exist are now purged automatically.[12]

1.3.0

  • Added an experimental equipment compare feature. You can change its key mapping in the in-game controls menu.[13]
  • Fixed the divider line color not adapting correctly for certain items with a custom frame, and fixed rating text following the cursor position instead of the tooltip's overall size.[13]
