What is Squat Grow?

2 parts

Squat Grow lets you speed up plant growth just by crouching. Press your sneak key repeatedly near a crop, a tree or anything else that's growable, and it grows. The project page says plants grow twice as fast, so you can leave the bone meal at home.[1]

What it can do

  • Crouch (squat or twerk) to grow crops, trees or anything else that's growable.[1]
  • The effect range is configurable, up to 16 blocks.[1]
  • The effect chance is configurable.[1]
  • You can choose which plants are affected by registry name or by tag, and use either a whitelist or a blacklist.[1]
  • OPMode: when enabled, you only need to hold shift and every valid block in range is affected. The author says this started as an accident, then got its own config option.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show which range, chance, list or OPMode settings this pack uses, so treat the values above as what the mod allows, not as the pack's settings.

The pack ships Squat Grow 21.1.4 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge.[2]

Where the quest book places it

Squat Grow shows up in the "Getting Started" chapter, which is chapter 3 of 22 in the book and sits in the "Echoes of History" group. The quest is "Digging In The Dirt" quest, and you reach it after both "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest (the Stone Crook quest) and "From Punching To Smashing" quest.[3]

The quest asks you to get any sapling. It points out that dirt hides plenty of them when you mine it with the crook, and that instead of waiting for a tree to grow you can force it with Squat Grow. The quest says this can be toggled with a keybind.[3]

Three quests unlock after it: "Leaf Nothing Behind" quest, "Charcoal and You" quest and "Hammer Time" quest. That makes it an early step in your first wood supply in the stone world.[3]

How do you get started with Squat Grow?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Squat Grow is different from most mods you'll meet in this pack: there's nothing to craft before you can use it. You don't build a machine or make a special tool. You just crouch near a plant.[1]

Step by step

  1. Plant something growable, such as a crop or a tree sapling. The mod's description says it works on crops, trees and anything else that's growable.[1]
  2. Stand near the plant and press your sneak key repeatedly. Each crouch can help the plant grow, so keep tapping until you're happy with how far along it is.[1]
  3. Repeat for every plant you want to speed up, and skip the bone meal. The mod describes itself as a replacement for it.[1]

What you can tweak

The mod has several options, which the pack may change. You can set the effect range (up to 16 blocks) and the effect chance. You can also choose which plants are affected, by registry name or by tag, and use either a whitelist or a blacklist.[1]

There is also an optional OPMode. When it's enabled, you only need to hold shift and every valid block in range is affected. The author says this started as an accident and was then made a config option.[1]

Tip: If crouching near a plant seems to do less than you expect, the pack's range, chance or plant lists may differ from the mod's description. Treat the numbers here as the mod's own limits, not as this pack's settings.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual config values for Squat Grow (effect range, effect chance, whitelist or blacklist contents, and whether OPMode is on) could not be confirmed from the available sources. No crafting recipes or quests for this mod were found either, so there are no items to make first.

How does Squat Grow work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Squat Grow is a very simple mod. There are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. You crouch (squat, or twerk if you prefer) near a plant, and the plant grows. The project page says plants grow twice as fast with the mod, so you can leave the bonemeal at home.[1]

How you use it

Press your sneak key repeatedly until the plant has grown as much as you want. It works on crops, trees and anything else that's growable.[1]

What the mod can be configured to do

According to the mod's project page, these are the options it offers. They describe the mod in general, not necessarily the values this pack uses.[1]

  • Effect range: you can change how far from you the effect reaches, up to 16 blocks.[1]
  • Effect chance: you can change how likely each affected plant is to grow.[1]
  • Whitelist or blacklist: you can limit which blocks are affected, either by the plant's registry name or by tags.[1]
  • OPMode: if it is enabled, you only need to hold shift and all valid blocks in range are affected. The author says this started as an accident and was kept as a config option.[1]
Tip: If you have several plants in range, one crouch press can affect more than one of them. Stand near your crop field or saplings and tap sneak instead of walking up to each plant.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual range, chance, whitelist or blacklist and OPMode settings could not be confirmed from the available sources, so the defaults and limits above should not be treated as this pack's values. The pack's own recipes and quests for this mod are also unconfirmed.

How do you progress through Squat Grow?

3 parts

Squat Grow doesn't have tiers or upgrade levels that I can confirm from the pack. What the quest book does is show you three places where crouching to speed up growth comes in handy. Think of them as milestones along the pack's path rather than tiers of the mod.[3][4][5]

Milestone 1: Your first saplings

You meet it early, in the Getting Started chapter, in the quest "Digging In The Dirt" quest. It comes after "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest and "From Punching To Smashing" quest. Breaking Dirt with the Crook gives you saplings, and the quest says you can either wait for a tree to grow or force it with Squat Grow. The quest also says the feature can be toggled with a keybind.[3]

Once you have your first Wood, the quest book moves you on to "Leaf Nothing Behind" quest, "Charcoal and You" quest and "Hammer Time" quest.[3]

Milestone 2: Tiered chicken seeds

The next appearance is in the Generating Resources chapter, in "Soul Extracting and Seeds" quest, which comes after "Roost Ultimate" quest. Chickens have tiers, and each tier needs a matching tier of seed. Those seeds need Souls, which you get from a Soul Extractor. The quest tells you that you only need one seed of each tier, then you plant them and squat-grow them.[4]

Tip: The tiers here belong to the chickens and their seeds, not to Squat Grow. The quest also notes that the World Engine can craft soul upgrades.[4]

Milestone 3: Budding Certus Quartz

The last mention is in the Storage chapter, in "Certus Quartz" quest, which follows "Digital Storage" quest. Budding Certus Quartz buds crystals over time, similar to amethyst, and the quest says squat grow does work on the budding blocks.[5]

Unverified Whether Squat Grow has any tiers, upgrades or settings of its own is not confirmed by the pack data I have. The three quests above are the only references I can point to.

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Squat Grow?

3 parts

Squat Grow comes up in three quest chapters in this pack. Each one only mentions it in passing, so none of them is a dedicated Squat Grow chapter. Here they are in book order.[3][4][5]

Getting Started (Echoes of History)

This is the first place you meet it. In chapter 3 of the book, "Digging In The Dirt" quest asks you to get any sapling from mining Dirt with the Crook. The quest text says you can wait for a tree to grow, or force it to grow with Squat Grow, which can be toggled with a keybind.[3]

It unlocks after "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest and "From Punching To Smashing" quest. Once it is done, "Leaf Nothing Behind" quest, "Charcoal and You" quest and "Hammer Time" quest open up.[3]

Generating Resources (Forgotten Knowledge)

In chapter 13 of the book, "Soul Extracting and Seeds" quest is about the Roost Ultimate chickens. It asks you to make the Soul Extractor and the tier 1 chicken food, among other things. The quest text says chicken seeds need Souls to craft, and that you only need one seed of each tier. You then plant them and squat-grow them.[4]

This quest comes after "Roost Ultimate" quest. a quest in "Generating Resources" (the Gold Chicken) is the next step, and it also needs "A Good Starting Point" quest.[4]

Storage (Forgotten Knowledge)

In chapter 17 of the book, "Certus Quartz" quest asks you to get Certus Quartz Dust and Certus Quartz Crystal. Its note says Squat Grow does work on budding blocks, which are the source of the crystals. The quest text says these blocks decay into Flawed Budding Certus Quartz if mined.[5]

It comes after "Digital Storage" quest, which asks for the Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. The quest text says you craft that block in the World Engine with the Machine Block upgrade.[5]

After Certus Quartz you can go on to "Fluix Crystals" quest and "Processors O' Plenty" quest. "Refined Storage 2" quest needs both Certus Quartz and Processors O' Plenty.[5]

Tip: The Storage chapter has 108 quests, and the text of 64 of them is not covered here. Check the quest book in-game for the rest.[5]

What changed in Squat Grow between versions?

2 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Squat Grow 21.1.4 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. The history below comes from the mod's own changelog.[2]

Releases for Minecraft 1.21

  • 21.1.4: Added Sable support, so squat to grow works when you are in a sub-level. This is the version in the pack.[2][6]
  • 21.1.1: Added a key binding to enable or disable the squat to grow functionality. The default key is U, and you can change it in the controls menu.[6][7]
  • 21.01.0: Updated to 1.21.1.[6]
  • 21.0.3: Updated NeoForge and Fabric, and added short grass to the default config.[6]
  • 21.0.2 and 21.0.1: Fixed a NeoForge version issue and a NeoForge crash.[6]
  • 21.0.0: Ported the mod to 1.21.[6]
Tip: If you ever want to turn squat growing off, for example while you are building, use the key binding added in 21.1.1. It defaults to U.[6][7]

Older releases worth knowing

  • 6.0.1 and 6.0.0: Updated the modloader versions, and ported to 1.20.4.[6]
  • 5.2.0: Added an action where you hold a grass block in your offhand and squat to quickly convert dirt to grass. Most of the mod was rewritten to be more robust and extendable, and another crash that could disconnect clients or crash single player was fixed.[6]
  • 5.1.1: Fixed world crashes when used with mods like canary.[6]
  • 5.1.0: Now built for NeoForge instead of Forge, and the changelog marks this as possibly breaking. It added support for AE2 growth acceleratable blocks, plus a multiplier config option for sugarcane and AE2.[6]
  • 5.0.4 and 5.0.3: Gave better sugar cane chances, and added a config option requiring a hoe to be held.[6]
  • 3.0.0: Ported to Architectury, giving both Forge and Fabric versions.[6]
