What is Squat Grow?

1 part

Squat Grow lets you grow plants by crouching. Instead of reaching for bone meal, you tap your sneak key next to crops, trees or anything else that can grow, and the mod speeds them up. Its project page describes the effect as plants growing twice as fast.[1]

The mod is configurable. You can change the effect range (up to 16 blocks) and the effect chance, and you can use a whitelist or blacklist to choose which blocks are affected, by registry name or by tag. There is also an OPMode option: when it is enabled, you only need to hold shift and every valid block in range is affected.[1]

This pack ships Squat Grow version 21.1.4 for Minecraft 1.21.1 in FTB Skies 2 1.22.0.[2]

Where the quest book mentions it

Squat Grow has no quest of its own that the sources show. It is mentioned inside the "Getting Started" chapter, which sits in the "Main Questline" group and is chapter 5 of 41 in the book. That chapter has 64 quests, and I can only see part of its text, so the rest is told in the quest book itself.[3]

  • "Wooden Tools" quest comes right after "Welcome to Minecraft" quest. Its text says that if you hold a hoe in either hand and spam sneak, you can speed up the growth of nearby plants.[3]
  • "Food and Farming" quest comes after a quest called The Metal Tool Age. It says this pack comes with the ability to Squat Grow your crops, and that while holding a hoe you can spam crouch to grow nearby crops.[3]
Tip: Both quests describe squatting with a hoe in your hand, so that is the way to try it first. Whether the hoe is a pack setting or something you can skip is not shown in the sources I have, so check the mod's config if you want to change it.[3]

How do you get started with Squat Grow?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Squat Grow is different from most mods you'll meet in this pack: there's nothing to craft before you can use it. You don't build a machine or make a special tool. You just crouch near a plant.[1]

Step by step

  1. Plant something growable, such as a crop or a tree sapling. The mod's description says it works on crops, trees and anything else that's growable.[1]
  2. Stand near the plant and press your sneak key repeatedly. Each crouch can help the plant grow, so keep tapping until you're happy with how far along it is.[1]
  3. Repeat for every plant you want to speed up, and skip the bone meal. The mod describes itself as a replacement for it.[1]

What you can tweak

The mod has several options, which the pack may change. You can set the effect range (up to 16 blocks) and the effect chance. You can also choose which plants are affected, by registry name or by tag, and use either a whitelist or a blacklist.[1]

There is also an optional OPMode. When it's enabled, you only need to hold shift and every valid block in range is affected. The author says this started as an accident and was then made a config option.[1]

Tip: If crouching near a plant seems to do less than you expect, the pack's range, chance or plant lists may differ from the mod's description. Treat the numbers here as the mod's own limits, not as this pack's settings.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual config values for Squat Grow (effect range, effect chance, whitelist or blacklist contents, and whether OPMode is on) could not be confirmed from the available sources. No crafting recipes or quests for this mod were found either, so there are no items to make first.

How does Squat Grow work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Squat Grow is a very simple mod. There are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. You crouch (squat, or twerk if you prefer) near a plant, and the plant grows. The project page says plants grow twice as fast with the mod, so you can leave the bonemeal at home.[1]

How you use it

Press your sneak key repeatedly until the plant has grown as much as you want. It works on crops, trees and anything else that's growable.[1]

What the mod can be configured to do

According to the mod's project page, these are the options it offers. They describe the mod in general, not necessarily the values this pack uses.[1]

  • Effect range: you can change how far from you the effect reaches, up to 16 blocks.[1]
  • Effect chance: you can change how likely each affected plant is to grow.[1]
  • Whitelist or blacklist: you can limit which blocks are affected, either by the plant's registry name or by tags.[1]
  • OPMode: if it is enabled, you only need to hold shift and all valid blocks in range are affected. The author says this started as an accident and was kept as a config option.[1]
Tip: If you have several plants in range, one crouch press can affect more than one of them. Stand near your crop field or saplings and tap sneak instead of walking up to each plant.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual range, chance, whitelist or blacklist and OPMode settings could not be confirmed from the available sources, so the defaults and limits above should not be treated as this pack's values. The pack's own recipes and quests for this mod are also unconfirmed.

How do you progress through Squat Grow?

1 part

Squat Grow doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack. It is one simple trick: hold a hoe and tap crouch over and over to speed up nearby plants. So the progression here is really about when the quest book tells you about it.[3]

Where the quest book introduces it

Your first hint comes early in the Getting Started chapter, which is part of the Main Questline group. The "Wooden Tools" quest quest says that if you hold a hoe in either hand and spam sneak, you can speed up the growth of nearby plants.[3]

The quest that names the feature is "Food and Farming" quest, which unlocks after "The Metal Tool Age" quest. That one in turn comes after "Proper Materials" quest, so you meet it once you have iron tools.[3]

The quest tells you the pack comes with the ability to Squat Grow your crops. While you hold a hoe, you can spam crouch to grow nearby crops. It sits next to the farming basics: punch grass for different seeds, then till the ground near water with a hoe to make farmland for them. The quest checks for Wheat Seeds.[3]

Tip: You don't have to wait for the iron-tier quest to try it. The Wooden Tools quest already mentions the hoe and sneak trick, so you can use it as soon as you have a hoe.[3]

Unverified Whether Squat Grow has any tiers, upgrades, crafting steps or settings in this pack is unverified. The quest book only describes the hoe and crouch behaviour.

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Squat Grow?

2 parts

Squat Grow shows up in just one quest in the pack's quest book: "Food and Farming" quest. It sits in the Getting Started chapter, which is in the Main Questline group (chapter 5 of 41 in the book).[3]

Where it sits in the order

You reach it after "The Metal Tool Age" quest, where you make an Iron Pickaxe. That quest in turn comes after "Proper Materials" quest, the iron ingot quest. So you will meet the Squat Grow quest once you have iron and a pickaxe made from it.[3]

What the quest asks for

The quest is about getting a farm started. One of its tasks asks you to get Wheat Seeds. The quest text tells you that punching grass gives you different types of seeds, and that you can use a hoe to till the ground near water into farmland to plant them on.[3]

Then comes the part for this mod: the quest says the pack lets you Squat Grow your crops. Hold a hoe in your hand and spam crouch to grow nearby crops.[3]

Tip: The earlier Wooden Tools quest already hints at the same trick: hold a hoe in either hand and spam sneak to speed up the growth of nearby plants. You can start using it long before you reach the farming quest.[3]

What changed in Squat Grow between versions?

2 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Squat Grow 21.1.4+mc1.21.1, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for it, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelog.[2]

Recent releases (1.21 line)

  • 21.1.4: added Sable support for squat grow when you are in a sub-level. This is the version your pack runs.[2][4]
  • 21.1.1: added a key binding to turn the squat to grow functionality on and off. The default key is U, and you can change it in the controls menu.[4]
  • 21.1.0 (listed as 21.01.0 in the changelog): the 1.21.1 update.[4]
  • 21.0.3: updated neo and fabric, and added short grass to the mod's default config.[4]
  • 21.0.2 and 21.0.1: a NeoForge version fix and a NeoForge crash fix.[4]
  • 21.0.0: ported to 1.21.[4]

Older history

  • 6.0.1 updated the modloader versions, and 6.0.0 ported the mod to 1.20.4.[4]
  • 5.2.0 added a new action: hold a grass block in your offhand to quickly squat and convert dirt to grass. It also fixed another crash that could disconnect clients from a server or crash single player, and most of the mod was rewritten to be more robust and extendable.[4]
  • 5.1.1 fixed world crashes when using mods like canary.[4]
  • 5.1.0 switched the build to NeoForge instead of Forge (the changelog says it should still work on Forge), refactored the code, added support for AE2 growth acceleratable blocks, and added a multiplier config option for sugarcane and AE2.[4]
  • 5.0.4 gave better sugar cane chances.[4]
  • 5.0.3 added a config option requiring a hoe to be held.[4]
  • 3.0.0 ported the mod to architectury, giving it Forge and Fabric versions.[4]
Tip: The short grass addition in 21.0.3 is described as part of the mod's default config. The changelog doesn't say whether this pack changes that value.[4]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as squatgrow, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
