What is Gaze (A Malum Addon)?
1 part
Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, the dark-magic-themed mod. It builds on Malum's themes and adds new progression, systems and content for players who want to keep going deeper into the Arcane. If you've already been playing with Malum's soul magic, this is the mod that gives you more to do with it.[1]
The pack ships Gaze (A Malum Addon) version 1.1.6.1, and it has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier.[2]
Where it fits in the pack
Gaze shows up in the pack's general_magic quest chapter. One quest asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit together with the Veil's Edge. The next quest, a quest in "?", follows directly after it and asks for the Splintered World. The first of those is a quest in "?".[3]
Since the Umbral Spirit is a Malum item, that quest comes after you've started with Malum's spirit magic. That makes Gaze a follow-up to Malum, not a starting point.[3]
Unverified What the Veil's Edge and the Splintered World actually do, and how you craft them in this pack, isn't confirmed by the available sources, so check in-game before relying on either.
How do you get started with Gaze (A Malum Addon)?
4 parts
Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, so everything here builds on Malum's dark-magic progression. Gaze items are crafted through Malum's own machines. The recipes below are the ones this pack actually uses, and they are rendered from the pack.[1][4]
First up: Veil's Edge
Your first Gaze item is Veil's Edge. It is the second task of the quest a quest in "?" in the general magic chapter, alongside an Umbral Spirit. That quest only opens after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[3]
It is made by Spirit Infusion, so you need Malum's infusion setup first.[4]
Step 2: Try a few runes
Gaze's runes are made by Runeworking. Good ones to try first are Rune of Eir, Rune of Gymir and Rune of Fafnir. The recipes are shown below.[4]
The in-game book gives each rune a one-line flavour description. Eir is "the impulse to travel" and Gymir is "the impulse to grasp".[5]
Next up: Splintered World
After Veil's Edge, the next quest a quest in "?" asks for Splintered World. It is also made by Spirit Infusion, but its recipe is much heavier than Veil's Edge, so treat it as a mid-game goal.[3][4]

Later on
Once you are comfortable with Spirit Infusion, the addon adds more gear. This includes weapons like Spirit Saber and Soul Rapier, and accessories like Necklace of Arcane Charge and Ring of Idle Meditation. There is also Encyclopedia Unveiled, which is infused from Malum's Encyclopedia Esoterica.[4]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work?
5 parts
Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, so it has no machines of its own that the sources describe. Its items are made in Malum's crafting systems, and its mechanics are mostly rites, a few items and effects, and a handful of config options. The sources don't cover power, fluid or item automation for this mod, so I won't guess about those.[1][4]
How Gaze items are crafted
Everything Gaze adds is made with one of two Malum recipe types: Spirit Infusion or Runeworking. Spirit Infusion makes the bigger gear and trinkets, such as Soul Rapier, Spirit Saber, Seidhr, Splintered World and Swift Spiral. It also makes the accessories: Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation and Sloth Brooch. Runeworking makes the runes, for example Rune of Ymir, Rune of Eir and Rune of Fafnir.[4]
Here is an accessory made by Spirit Infusion, then a rune made by Runeworking, so you can see the exact in-pack recipes.[4]

Spirit Infusion
Runeworking
The Encyclopedia Unveiled is a special case. It is made by infusing a Malum book, the Encyclopedia Esoterica. The in-game book text describes this as using Spirit Infusion to infuse Umbral Arcana into your research notes, and the pages then rearrange themselves.[4][5]

Gaze rites
Gaze adds its own rites, with lesser and greater tiers across the aerial, aqueous, arcane, earthen, infernal, sacred and wicked types. The Malum book also has corrupted versions of each. The pack leaves rites switched on: disableGazeRites is false, and setting it to true would disable Gaze rites entirely.[5][6]
The book describes the corrupted lesser rites as simple rites that work while active. The aerial one repels nearby creatures, the aqueous one extinguishes fires, and the earthen one grants nearby players luck. The infernal one melts Netherrack into Lava, the sacred one Zombifies nearby Villagers, and the wicked one drains hunger.[5]
The corrupted greater rites are called advanced rites. The aerial one occasionally blows falling blocks upwards, and the aqueous one strikes nearby mobs with lightning. The infernal one stops certain mobs from Zombifying in the Overworld, and the sacred one regenerates cake and makes it more nutritious. The earthen one places items on the same type of block the ritual was placed on.[5]
Umbral Spirits and the Veil Dagger
Umbral Spirits drop when something configured is killed with a Veil Dagger. Players always drop them and are always on the list. umbralDropEntities is set to the Villager only in this pack. umbralDropChance is 0.1, which is the mod default, and it can range from 0.0 to 1.0. The 0.1 chance applies to the configured entities, while players are always 100%.[6]
On multiplayer servers, villagers dropping Umbral Spirits is controlled by doVillagerUmbralsOnServer. The pack has it set to true, and singleplayer is always allowed.[6]
Soul Ward integrity
integrityRatio sets how much Soul Ward Integrity you get for a single point of Armour Toughness. The pack uses 5, the same as the mod default, and the allowed range is 1.0 to 10.0.[6]
Items and effects worth knowing
- Necklace of Arcane Charge: the book says it uses death and souls to increase the speed at which your Staff recovers.[5]
- Swift Spiral: its tooltip calls it "The drill that will pierce the heavens".[5]
- Drenched effect: slows you and extinguishes fire.[5]
- Joyful effect: increases hunger and saturation from cakes.[5]
Unverified The sources don't give stats, rune effects or the Veil Dagger's own recipe, so check those in game.
How do you progress through Gaze (A Malum Addon)?
4 parts
Gaze adds a set of Malum addon items, and in this pack they all hang off Malum's crafting. Nothing here is a standalone tech tree: every Gaze item is made through Malum's Spirit Infusion or Runeworking recipes, so you need to be comfortable with Malum before you touch any of it.[4]
The quest path
The pack's quests only touch two Gaze items, both in the general_magic chapter. First comes a quest in "?", which asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and a Veil's Edge. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[3]
After that, a quest in "?" asks for the Splintered World. So in the pack's own progression, Veil's Edge is your entry point into Gaze and Splintered World is the next goal.[3]
Step 1: Veil's Edge
The Veil's Edge is made with Spirit Infusion, and the recipe below is the exact in-pack version.[4]
Step 2: Splintered World
The Splintered World is also a Spirit Infusion recipe, and it is clearly the more demanding one. Check the recipe below before you start gathering, because it pulls in several materials from further along in Malum, including something from outside Malum entirely.[4]

Everything else Gaze adds
The quests don't cover the rest of the mod, but the recipe dump shows how each item is made. These are all optional extras you can pick up as you go.[4]
- Weapons made by Spirit Infusion: Soul Rapier, Spirit Saber, Swift Spiral and Seidhr.[4]
- Trinkets made by Spirit Infusion: Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation and Sloth Brooch.[4]
- Encyclopedia Unveiled is also a Spirit Infusion recipe.[4]
- Runes made by Runeworking: Rune of Mimir, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Eir, Rune of Fafnir, Rune of Gymir, Rune of Svalinn, Rune of Nott and Rune of Ymir.[4]
Unverified The sources don't define formal tiers for Gaze, and they don't describe what each item or rune does. The order above follows only the pack's quests and the recipes, so treat it as a suggested path rather than an official tier list.
How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work with other mods?
4 parts
Gaze is a fan-made addon for Malum, so nearly all of its connections in the pack run through Malum. Every recipe and quest in the sources that mixes Gaze items with another mod's items uses Malum materials, with a few vanilla Minecraft ingredients on top.[1][4]
The mod's project page says compat with other 1.21.1 mods is planned. The recipes and quests in the sources show no links to any mod besides Malum and vanilla Minecraft.[1][4]
Runeworking: one Malum item per rune
Gaze's runes are made through Malum's runeworking. Each rune turns a single Malum item into its Gaze rune:[4]
- Revealed Soulwood Log becomes Rune of Mimir.[4]
- Blighted Soulwood becomes Rune of Hodr.[4]
- Blighted Gunk becomes Rune of Fafnir.[4]
- Astral Weave becomes Rune of Svalinn.[4]
- Void Salts becomes Rune of Nott.[4]
- Azure Runewood Sapling becomes Rune of Ymir.[4]
Spirit infusion: Malum gear upgraded into Gaze items
- Soulstained Steel Sword is the base for Soul Rapier.[4]
- Runic Brooch is the base for Sloth Brooch.[4]
- Encyclopedia Esoterica is the base for Encyclopedia Unveiled.[4]
- Ornate Necklace is the base for Necklace of Arcane Charge.[4]
- Ornate Ring is the base for Ring of Mage Ethics.[4]
- Ring of Echoing Arcana is the base for Ring of Idle Meditation.[4]
The Sloth Brooch is made with Malum's spirit infusion.
Malignant pewter and fused consciousness show up again and again. Malignant Pewter Plating is in the recipes for Seidhr, Soul Rapier, Spirit Saber, Splintered World and Swift Spiral. Fused Consciousness is in the recipes for Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation, Seidhr and Soul Rapier.[4]
Vanilla ingredients in the mix
- Ring of Mage Ethics needs a Nether Star alongside its Malum materials.[4]
- Splintered World needs a Dragon Egg alongside its Malum materials.[4]
- Spirit Saber uses Amethyst Shard and Prismarine Crystals.[4]
- Swift Spiral uses Nautilus Shell, Prismarine Crystals, Trident and Wind Charge, plus Zephyr Impetus.[4]
Spirit Infusion (malum)

Quests
The pack's general_magic quest chapter includes two Gaze quests. a quest in "?" asks for Umbral Spirit and Veil's Edge. a quest in "?" comes after it and asks for Splintered World.[3]
The Veil's Edge recipe uses only Malum materials.
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Gaze (A Malum Addon)?
Gaze shows up in just one place in the quest book: the general_magic chapter. Two quests there ask for Gaze items, and they come one after the other, so you can't skip ahead.[3]
- a quest in "?" is the first one. It has two item tasks: you need Umbral Spirit and Veil's Edge. This quest unlocks after another quest in the same chapter (41C439295D5558C2), so finish that one first.[3]
- a quest in "?" comes next and unlocks once the quest above is done. Its single task is to hand in Splintered World.[3]
Both quests are untitled in the pack files, so you'll only see them by their position in the chapter. Note that the first quest also wants an item from Malum, so you'll need to have gotten into that mod before you can complete it.[3]
Unverified The quest files don't show any rewards for these two quests, and they don't say how to obtain the Gaze items. Check the in-game quest book for the rewards, and the recipe or item pages for how to get each item. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Which Gaze (A Malum Addon) config options matter?
2 parts
Gaze only has a small config file in this pack, config/gaze-common.toml. Here is what each option does and how the pack sets it.[6]
Umbral Spirit drops
- umbralDropChance is the chance for configured entities to drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger. The pack sets it to 0.1, the same as the mod default, and it accepts values from 0.0 to 1.0. Players always drop them, so this chance doesn't apply to them.[6]
- umbralDropEntities is the list of entity IDs that can drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger. The pack's list contains only minecraft:villager, and players are always on the list too.[6]
- doVillagerUmbralsOnServer decides whether Villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server. The pack has it set to true. Singleplayer is always allowed.[6]
Soul Ward and rites
- integrityRatio sets how much Soul Ward Integrity you get for each point of Armour Toughness. The pack uses 5, which matches the mod default, and the allowed range is 1.0 to 10.0.[6]
- disableGazeRites turns Gaze rites off entirely. The pack leaves it at false, so rites are enabled.[6]
