What is Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

1 part

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, the dark-magic mod about souls. It builds on Malum's themes with new progression, systems and content. Its project page says it is still in active development, so some features are unfinished and it gets updated often. This pack includes version 1.1.7.1.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

Gaze is an addon for Malum, and the pack's quest book places the Gaze items you can see in the Malum chapter, in the Magic Mods group. The text of some quests in that chapter isn't available here, so check the quest book itself for the full list.[1][3]

The Gaze quests shown here all hang off the Weeping Well branch. After "The Weeping Well" quest, the book moves on to "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest, which asks you to bring an Umbral Spirit and the Veil's Edge.[3]

Three quests follow Spirit of Sacrifice:[3]

Tip: If you want to see everything Malum and Gaze have to offer, craft the Encyclopedia Unveiled early. The quest book recommends it for unlocking all available content.[3]

How do you get started with Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

4 parts

Gaze is an addon for Malum, so your first steps happen in Malum. In this pack's quest book, the Malum chapter sits in the Magic Mods group (chapter 19 of 31). Gaze's items show up in the later quests there. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][3]

Step 1: Get the Malum basics

  1. Start with "Soulstone" quest. The quest says to find or form Soulstone so you can make Malum's two keystone features, the Spirit Altar and the Crude Scythe.[3]
  2. Follow up with "Runewood" quest and "Spirit Altar" quest. The Spirit Altar quest comes after both Soulstone and Runewood. The Altar is where infusion resources get channeled into a focal item.[3]
  3. Make a Crude Scythe for "The Reaping of Souls" quest. Spirit is collected from creatures slain by a Crude Scythe, and the quest book calls a reliable supply of Arcane spirit all but mandatory for further creations.[3]

Step 2: Reach the Weeping Well

Gaze really begins at "The Weeping Well" quest, a structure out in the void that tugs on certain items. The next quest, "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest, is where Gaze comes in. Umbral Spirits come from sacrificing the souls of the living. You can do that by throwing yourself into the Well, or you can get them as a rare drop from villagers killed with the Veil's Edge.[3]

The Veil's Edge is the Gaze item that the Spirit of Sacrifice quest asks for. It's a spirit infusion recipe, so you'll need the Spirit Altar from step 1.[3][4]

Tip: umbralDropChance is 0.1 in this pack, which is also the mod default. That is the chance for configured entities to drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger. The list in umbralDropEntities contains only villagers, and players are always on the list and always drop at 100%. On multiplayer, doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so villagers can drop Umbral Spirits there too.[5]

Step 3: Unlock the Encyclopedia

"Encyclopedia Unveiled" quest also comes after Spirit of Sacrifice. It recommends crafting the Encyclopedia Unveiled to unlock all available content for Malum and Gaze, so do this early.[3]

Where to go next

Once you have Umbral Spirits, two more quests open up after Spirit of Sacrifice. "Weapons of Sacrifice" quest covers the Splintered World and the Replica Dharmachakra. "Umbral Runes" quest covers Gaze's runes, such as the Rune of Eir. Both are bigger projects with long recipes, so build up your Malum materials first.[3][4]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Here's the honest picture first: the sources for this mod don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or pipe-style automation. Gaze is an addon for Malum, so it builds on Malum's spirit-based crafting rather than adding its own power network. What the sources do cover is how you craft its items, how Umbral Spirits drop, how the Soul Ward numbers are set, and what its rites are for.[1][6]

Watch out: Gaze is still in active development. Some features are unfinished, bugs can happen, and the mod can get big overhauls, so mechanics may shift between versions.[1]

How Gaze items are made

Everything Gaze adds in this pack is crafted through Malum's own crafting types: spirit infusion, runeworking and soul binding. The recipe blocks in this section show the exact in-pack recipes for the Enchantment Workbench, the Spirit Saber, the Soul Rapier and the Splintered World.[6]

The Enchantment Workbench is described in the lore as "Not quite etched in stone", and its book entry is tied to "Spiritual Empowerment". The sources don't explain how its interface works, so I can only show you how to craft it.[6][7]

Runes and Umbral Spirits

Gaze's runes are made through runeworking, and every one of them needs an Umbral Spirit as an ingredient. Here's the Rune of Eir as an example.[6]

Rune of EirMod recipe

Runeworking (malum)

Recipe id: malum:runeworking/rune_of_eir

The in-game book gives each rune a short tagline. Only some runes have one in the sources I was given:[7]

The Rune of Ymir and Rune of Fafnir are also made by runeworking, but the sources give no description of what they do.[6]

Umbral Spirits come from kills made with a Veil Dagger. Players always drop them, and the list of other entities that can drop them is set in umbralDropEntities. In this pack that list contains only the villager.[8]

  • umbralDropChance is 0.1 here, on a range from 0.0 to 1.0, for the configured entities. That is the same as the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it. Players always drop them.[8]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server too. Singleplayer is always allowed.[8]
  • farmUmbrals is true, so mobs holding Veil's Edge (a zombie, for example) can trigger umbral drops from the configured mobs or players.[8]

Soul Ward settings

Some config options tie other stats into the Soul Ward. integrityRatio sets how much Soul Ward Integrity you get per point of Armour Toughness. It's 5 in this pack, the same as the mod default, and it can range from 1.0 to 10.0.[8]

healingConversionAttributes lists healing attributes that convert into Soul Ward Recovery Rate. This pack lists only apothic_attributes:healing_received. The config notes that other mods' options haven't been tested.[8]

Rites

Gaze adds its own lesser rites for the aerial, aqueous, arcane, earthen, infernal, sacred and wicked types, plus a corrupt version of each and an umbral rite. The book entries describe them with taglines such as "Manipulating the Weather", "Manipulating the Undead" and "Manipulating Earth's Bounty".[7]

The rites lore says they offer a way to pull creatures into traps and items into containers, which is about as close to automation as the sources get. Gaze rites are switched on in this pack, because disableGazeRites is false.[7][8]

Bestiary and particles

The Gaze bestiary is a "record of lost souls". With bestiary set to true, entries only show up after you've made kills, and you need to open your statistics to reveal them. fancyParticles is also on, and the config notes it is not currently a client-side option.[7][8]

How do you progress through Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

6 parts

Gaze items are tracked in the Malum chapter of the pack's quest book (group Magic Mods, chapter 19 of 31, 40 quests). Gaze has no chapter of its own. Four quests there ask for Gaze items, and they all hang off the Weeping Well branch: "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest comes right after "The Weeping Well" quest, and the other three come after it.[3]

Step 1: The Weeping Well and the Veil's Edge

"Spirit of Sacrifice" quest asks for an Umbral Spirit and the Veil's Edge. Umbral Spirits come from sacrificing the living. You can throw yourself into the Weeping Well, or you can kill villagers with the Veil's Edge, which drops one rarely.[3]

The Veil's Edge is a Spirit Infusion recipe. The Spirit Altar quest explains how that works: the focus item sits on the altar, and the other materials go on pedestals within 4 blocks of it.[3][4]

Step 2: The Encyclopedia and the Umbral Runes

"Encyclopedia Unveiled" quest recommends crafting the Encyclopedia Unveiled to unlock all available content for Malum and Gaze. It is a Spirit Infusion recipe.[3][4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/encyclopedia_unveiled

"Umbral Runes" quest accepts any one of these runes. They are runeworking recipes, and the Runeworking quest says runes are made in a Runic Workbench.[3][4]

Step 3: Weapons of Sacrifice

"Weapons of Sacrifice" quest asks for the Splintered World and the Replica Dharmachakra. The Splintered World's special ability summons flying swords that home in on your enemies. The Replica Dharmachakra gives mixed damage reduction against physical, magical and other damage sources.[3]

Gaze gear with no quest of its own

No quest asks for the rest of Gaze's items, but the pack has recipes for all of them. They are all Spirit Infusion recipes.[3][4]

Watch out: The pack changes the Soul Rapier recipe, so it is not the mod's default. Use the recipe shown below.[4]

What to unlock first

Many Gaze recipes use Malignant Pewter Plating, which the "Malignant Pewter" quest quest covers. That quest comes after "The Well's Returns" quest, which collects materials several of the trinket recipes use. Hallowed Gold Ingots turn up in many recipes too, and "Spiritual Metallurgy" quest is where you make them. So after the Weeping Well, work through those Malum quests alongside the Gaze ones.[3][4]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work with other mods?

4 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, and in this pack that is where all of its connections are. Every recipe that links a Gaze item to another mod is a Malum machine recipe: spirit infusion, runeworking or soul binding. The project page says compat with other 1.21.1 mods is planned, but the recipes and quests I can confirm here only join Gaze to Malum and to a few vanilla items.[1][4]

Malum crafting

You never craft Gaze gear on a normal crafting grid. Weapons, rings, necklaces and the like come out of Malum's spirit infusion, and the quest book's Spirit Altar quest explains how that works: you put the focus item on the altar, other materials go on pedestals within 4 blocks, and crafting starts on its own once everything is in place.[3][4]

The Encyclopedia Unveiled shows how tight the link is. It is made straight from Malum's Encyclopedia Esoterica, which is the item the Weeping Well quest asks for. Its own quest tells you to craft it to unlock all available content for Malum and Gaze.[3][4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/encyclopedia_unveiled

Some Gaze recipes also reuse the materials from the Well's Returns quest (Null Slate, Void Salts, Mnemonic Fragment and Malignant Lead). The Necklace of Arcane Charge and Ring of Idle Meditation both use several of them, and the Ring of Mage Ethics uses Malignant Lead.[3][4]

Runes and soul binding

The Gaze runes are all made by Malum runeworking, and each one takes an Umbral Spirit plus a bulk material. For example, Rune of Ymir uses Azure Runewood Sapling saplings, and Rune of Nott uses Void Salts. The Rune of Eir and the Rune of Gymir are the two that use vanilla items instead, so have a look at their recipes below.[4]

Two soul binding recipes also involve Gaze. The Domain of Swords recipe takes the Spirit Saber as an input, and the Pact of Encroaching Malice is made from Malum materials only.[4]

Vanilla items in Gaze recipes

Several of the bigger Gaze items combine Malum materials with vanilla ones. The Ring of Mage Ethics, Splintered World and Swift Spiral below all do this, and so does the Spirit Saber. The pack has also changed the Soul Rapier recipe, but the sources don't show what differs from the mod's default, so check the recipe below instead of relying on the mod's own version.[4]

Where it shows up in the quest book

The quest book places Gaze items in the Malum chapter, which is chapter 19 of 31 in the Magic Mods group and has 40 quests. The quests I can see that mention Gaze items are:[3]

The other 23 quests in the Malum chapter are told in the quest book, so check there for any other Gaze items they ask for.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

1 part

Gaze has no chapter of its own in this pack. Its quests sit inside the Malum chapter, which is in the Magic Mods group (chapter 19 of 31 in the book) and holds 40 quests. All of the Gaze ones hang off the Weeping Well line.[3]

The order to follow

  1. "The Weeping Well" quest is where the line starts. It has an observation task plus a Malum item, and its text describes a structure out in the void that tugs on certain items and alters what you offer it. The book lists no earlier quest for it.[3]
  2. "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest comes after the Weeping Well. It asks for an Umbral Spirit and the Veil's Edge. The quest text says Umbral Spirits come from sacrificing the souls of the living, for example by throwing yourself into the Weeping Well, and that they also drop rarely when you slay villagers with the Veil's Edge.[3]
  3. "Weapons of Sacrifice" quest follows Spirit of Sacrifice. It asks for the Splintered World and the Replica Dharmachakra. The text says the Splintered World's special ability summons flying swords that home in on your enemies, and that the wheel gives mixed damage reduction against physical, magical and other damage sources.[3]
  4. "Umbral Runes" quest also follows Spirit of Sacrifice. Its task accepts any one of these runes: Rune of Mimir, Rune of Svalinn, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Nott, Rune of Ymir, Rune of Gymir, Rune of Eir or Rune of Fafnir.[3]
  5. "Encyclopedia Unveiled" quest also follows Spirit of Sacrifice. It asks for the Encyclopedia Unveiled, and its text recommends crafting it to unlock all available content for Malum and Gaze.[3]
Tip: Weapons of Sacrifice, Umbral Runes and Encyclopedia Unveiled all unlock from Spirit of Sacrifice, so once you have an Umbral Spirit you can take them in whatever order suits you.[3]

The Weeping Well also unlocks "The Well's Returns" quest alongside Spirit of Sacrifice. That quest asks only for Malum items, so it is not a Gaze quest, but it sits on the same branch.[3]

Which Gaze (A Malum Addon) config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Gaze keeps its settings in config/gaze-common.toml. The options you're most likely to care about cover Umbral Spirit drops, Soul Ward and the rites. Here is how this pack sets each one.[8]

Umbral Spirit drops

  • umbralDropChance is 0.1 in this pack, the same as the mod default. It is the chance for configured entities to drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger, and it can be set from 0.0 to 1.0. Players always drop them at 100%.[8]
  • umbralDropEntities is set to minecraft:villager only. Players are always on this list, so you don't need to add them.[8]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so Villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server. Singleplayer is always allowed.[8]
  • farmUmbrals is true. That means mobs holding Veil's Edge, such as Zombies, can trigger umbral drops from the configured mobs or players.[8]

Soul Ward

  • integrityRatio is 5 in this pack, which matches the mod default. It controls how much Soul Ward Integrity you get for a single Armour Toughness point, and it can be set from 1.0 to 10.0.[8]
  • healingConversionAttributes is set to apothic_attributes:healing_received. Healing-related attributes in this list are converted into Soul Ward Recovery Rate if present. The config notes that options other than Apothic haven't been tested.[8]

Rites, bestiary and visuals

  • disableGazeRites is false, so Gaze rites are not disabled.[8]
  • bestiary is true. Bestiary entries require kills to be visible, and you have to open statistics to reveal them.[8]
  • fancyParticles is true. The config notes that this is not currently a client-side option.[8]
Tip: If you're hunting for Umbral Spirits, umbralDropChance is the value to watch, since it sets how often a Veil Dagger kill pays off on configured mobs. This pack leaves it at the mod default of 0.1.[8]
