What is FTB Ultimine?

1 part

FTB Ultimine is part of the pack at version 2101.1.15, and it has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier.[1]

The pack's own quest note is the best source for how it behaves here. Ultimine can be toggled with a keybind, and it needs a tool in your hand to work. The big catch for a Stone-themed pack is that it does not work on Stone.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Ultimine Notes" quest lives in the "Getting Started" chapter, which is chapter 3 of 22 in the book and belongs to the group "Echoes of History". It is a simple checkmark quest, so there is nothing to craft or collect for it.[2]

It comes right after "Hard As A Rock" quest, where you break Stone with your bare hands to get Pebbles. The same quest also unlocks "From Punching To Smashing" quest and "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest, so you can pick any of the three next.[2]

Among the quests I can see, none lists the Ultimine note as a prerequisite, so nothing in view is gated behind it. Eight quests in this chapter are not shown to me, so check the quest book for those.[2]

Tip: Ultimine will not speed up your Stone breaking at the start. Later in the same chapter, "Hammer Time" quest points you to hammers from the JustHammers mod, where the basic Stone Hammer digs a 3x3x1 area per swing.[2]

How do you get started with FTB Ultimine?

2 parts

FTB Ultimine is already part of this pack, and the quest book gives it a short note near the very start of the Getting Started chapter. The catch is that you begin in a world made of Stone, so the first steps are about getting a tool in your hand.[2]

Step by step

  1. Start with "Hard As A Rock" quest. You have no dirt, trees or tools, so you break Stone with an empty hand to get Pebbles and then make a crafting table.[2]
  2. Read "Ultimine Notes" quest, which comes right after that quest. It tells you three things: Ultimine does not work on Stone, it can be toggled with a keybind, and it needs a tool in your hand.[2]
  3. Make the Stone Hammer for "From Punching To Smashing" quest. It breaks Cobblestone down into a finer material.[2]
  4. Move on to "Hammer Time" quest. A pickaxe mines one block at a time, while the basic Stone Hammer digs a 3x3x1 area per swing and better Hammers dig even bigger areas. That Hammer comes from the JustHammers mod, not from Ultimine.[2]
Tip: Since Ultimine does nothing on Stone, don't waste time trying it on your first blocks. The quest book points you to Hammers for the early digging.[2]

Using Ultimine

Toggle it with the keybind shown in the quest, and hold a tool. The mod's own settings text says that, as long as the Require Tool option is on, you need either a damageable tool or an item in the ftbultimine:tools item tag. Another option can also require the tool to be valid for the block you are mining, meaning it can harvest the drops.[2][3]

To change the shape, the mod's text says that holding the Ultimine key (the backtick key by default) and using the up and down cursor keys cycles through shapes. If the shapes menu option requires it, you hold the Ultimine key and Sneak to show the menu. The pack's actual keybinds and setting values are not confirmed in the sources, so check your Controls screen under the FTB Ultimine category.[3]

Two server settings are worth knowing about if Ultimine seems to stop early. One sets the maximum number of blocks broken in one operation. The other makes Ultimining stop when your tool has a set amount of durability left, so the tool does not break (setting it to 0 lets tools break). Their values in this pack are not confirmed in the sources.[3]

Unverified The mod has an Ultiminer item, but how to obtain it in this pack is not confirmed in the sources, and no in-pack recipe for it was found.

How does FTB Ultimine work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources for FTB Ultimine only cover its settings tooltips, so this section explains what those settings do. It is a set of controls and server-side rules for breaking or modifying many blocks in one operation. Anything the tooltips don't confirm is left out.[4]

Choosing a shape

You work with Ultimining shapes through the Ultimine key, which is the backtick key by default. Shapes are cycled with the up and down cursor keys by default. A client setting decides whether you must hold the Ultimine key to cycle. If it is off, you can cycle shapes at any time.[4]

  • Shape menu: hold the Ultimine key and sneak at the same time to show the shape selection menu. A client setting controls whether sneaking is required when you press the Ultimine key.[4]
  • Menu context lines: you can set how many shape names appear above and below the selected shape in the menu.[4]
  • Hotbar feedback: you can turn on a hotbar message that names the new shape whenever you change it.[4]
  • Overlay: there are settings for the horizontal and vertical inset, which is measured toward the center of the screen and ignored when that axis is centered. The overlay scale looks best in multiples of 0.25.[4]
  • Preview lines: you can adjust the opacity of preview lines that sit inside blocks.[4]

Costs and limits

The server controls how much Ultimining can do and what it costs you. If FTB Ranks is installed, its matching nodes take priority over these settings when present.[4]

  • Max blocks: the maximum number of blocks that can be broken or modified in one operation. FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.max_blocks node.[4]
  • Exhaustion per block: the hunger exhaustion each block costs. It can be a fractional amount, and FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.exhaustion_per_block node.[4]
  • Experience per block: the experience each block costs. It can also be fractional, and FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.experience_per_block node.[4]
  • Cooldown: the time in ticks required between uses of Ultimine, where 20 ticks is 1 second. FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.ultimine_cooldown node.[4]

Tool rules

Several server settings decide which tools can Ultimine. One requires you to have equipped either a damageable tool or an item in the ftbultimine:tools item tag. Another requires the equipped tool to be valid for the block being Ultimined, meaning it must be able to harvest dropped items.[4]

Tool protection is a separate setting. Ultimining stops once the equipped tool has this much durability or less remaining, and setting it to 0 allows tools to break.[4]

Watch out: If the tool protection setting is 0, Ultimining can use up your tool completely. Check the server's value before you run a big dig with a tool you care about.[4]

Which blocks get included

The merge-tag settings widen what counts as the same kind of block. In shapeless digging mode, any block in the listed tags that shares a block tag with the block you mined is a valid candidate. Shaped digging modes have their own list that works the same way, and its default of '*' means any block is a valid candidate.[4]

An advanced setting controls what happens when the dig meets unbreakable blocks. It can stop digging there instead of skipping over them.[4]

Extra features

  • Single crop harvesting: when enabled, right-clicking a crop without the Ultimine key held harvests it.[4]
  • Right-click crystals: this harvests vanilla Amethyst and other modded crystals. It requires the FTB Ez Crystals mod and is NeoForge only.[4]

Unverified The pack's actual values for the settings above (max blocks, cooldown, exhaustion and experience costs, tool protection, and which options are enabled) are not shown in the sources here, because no config files for this mod were available. They are set in the mod's own config files, so check them in game before relying on any default.

How do you progress through FTB Ultimine?

2 parts

Ultimine doesn't have a tier ladder of its own in this pack. Its only appearance in the quest book is one short note, so this section stays short.[2]

Where it shows up in the quest book

The quest "Ultimine Notes" quest sits in the Getting Started chapter, which is chapter 3 of 22 in the Echoes of History group. It comes right after "Hard As A Rock" quest and is a simple checkmark quest, so there is nothing to craft or hand in. No other quest in the chapter lists it as a prerequisite.[2]

What the pack tells you about using it

  • The pack contains FTB Ultimine, but it does not work on Stone. That matters a lot in a world made of stone, so don't expect it to speed up your early stone breaking.[2]
  • Ultimine can be toggled with a keybind. The quest text doesn't say which key, so check your Controls menu.[2]
  • It also requires a tool in your hand to work.[2]
Tip: For breaking stone in bulk early on, the quests point you to hammers instead. "Hammer Time" quest says the basic Stone Hammer from the JustHammers mod digs a 3x3x1 area per swing, and better hammers dig bigger areas. You make the first one in "From Punching To Smashing" quest.[2]

Unverified Any extra Ultimine tiers, shape options or block limits for this pack are not confirmed by the sources available, and no recipes in the pack produce Ultimine items.

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use FTB Ultimine?

3 parts

FTB Ultimine only shows up in one quest in this pack, and it's an early one. It sits in the "Getting Started" chapter, which is chapter 3 of 22 in the quest book, in the group "Echoes of History".[2]

Ultimine Notes

"Ultimine Notes" quest is a checkmark quest, so there's nothing to craft or hand in. It's an info quest that tells you three things about FTB Ultimine: the pack contains it, it does not work on Stone, and it needs a tool in your hand to work. The quest also says you toggle Ultimine with a keybind.[2]

Watch out: Don't expect Ultimine to help with the Stone around you at the start. The quest says it does not work on Stone, so you'll need other tools for that.[2]

Where it sits in the chapter

The path to it is short. You start with "A Mysterious Path..." quest, then "The Start of Your Stone World" quest, then "FTB Events" quest, and then "Hard As A Rock" quest. That one asks you to get Stone Pebble and a crafting table by breaking Stone with an empty hand.[2]

Once "Hard As A Rock" quest is done, "Ultimine Notes" quest unlocks. It unlocks alongside "From Punching To Smashing" quest and "A Fine-Tooth Pick" quest, so you can read it whenever you like.[2]

If you want to mine more than one block per swing, "Hammer Time" quest is the next thing to look at. It comes after "Digging In The Dirt" quest and points you to Hammers from the JustHammers mod. The basic Stone Hammer digs a 3x3x1 area per swing, and better Hammers dig bigger areas. That's a different mod from Ultimine, but it covers the same problem of mining one block at a time.[2]

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as ftbultimine, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
