What is FTB Ultimine?

1 part

This pack ships FTB Ultimine version 2101.1.15, and it has been in the pack since All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0 or earlier.[1]

The quest book doesn't explain FTB Ultimine directly in the quests I can see. It describes it in passing instead: when you mine ores or logs, FTB Ultimine breaks the same blocks connected to the one you mined, which saves you a lot of time.[2]

Where the quest book places it

The mention sits in the quest "Vein Mining Unit" quest, in the chapter "Mekanism: Reactors" quest (the Mekanism reactors chapter). It belongs to the Meka-Tool group and comes after "Modification Station" quest. It asks you for Module Vein Mining Unit.[2]

The quest calls Vein Mining a limited FTB Ultimine. It then points out that the pack also has FTB Ultimine, so you have both options.[2]

Tip: If you only want faster ore and log mining, the Vein Mining Unit gives you a Meka-Tool version of the idea. FTB Ultimine is the fuller version of it, and it is already installed in the pack.[1][2]

How do you get started with FTB Ultimine?

5 parts

FTB Ultimine lets one action break or modify many blocks at once, up to a limit set on the server. No recipes produce this mod's items, so there is nothing to craft first. Instead, the first steps are learning the controls and the limits that decide whether it works for you.[3]

Step one: learn the Ultimine key

  1. Find the Ultimine key in your controls. It is listed under the FTB Ultimine category and defaults to the backtick key.[3]
  2. Hold the key and use the up and down cursor keys (the default) to cycle through shapes. A client setting decides whether the key must be held to cycle. If it is off, you can cycle shapes at any time.[3]
  3. To see the shape menu, hold the Ultimine key. A separate setting decides whether you must also sneak for the menu to show. When it shows, it lists a configurable number of shape names above and below the selected one.[3]
  4. If you want a hotbar message with the new shape whenever you change it, there is a client setting for that too.[3]

The overlay is adjustable. You can change its scale (multiples of 0.25 look best for the font), its inset from the screen edge, and the opacity of the preview lines that sit inside blocks.[3]

Step two: check your tool

If nothing happens when you try Ultimine, look at the server settings that gate it. One can require you to hold either a damageable tool or an item in the ftbultimine:tools item tag. Another can require the tool to be valid for the block you are mining, meaning it can actually harvest the drops.[3]

There is also a durability safeguard. Ultimining stops when your tool has a set amount of durability or less left. If that setting is 0, tools are allowed to break.[3]

Step three: know the limits

  • Max blocks: the most blocks that can be broken or modified in one operation.[3]
  • Cooldown: the time in ticks required between uses of Ultimine, where 20 ticks is 1 second.[3]
  • Exhaustion and experience per block: both can be fractional amounts, so big breaks cost you more.[3]
  • If FTB Ranks is installed, its matching nodes for max blocks, cooldown, exhaustion and experience take priority over the server settings.[3]

Unverified The pack's actual values for these limits are set in the mod's server settings, and the sources here do not show them. Check them in game before you plan around a number.

Crops

When the single crop harvesting feature is on, right-clicking a crop block without the Ultimine key held harvests it.[3]

Mekanism's take on it

The pack's quest book mentions Ultimine in the Mekanism: Reactors chapter. The quest "Vein Mining Unit" quest sits in the Meka-Tool group and comes after "Modification Station" quest. It asks for Module Vein Mining Unit, which the quest describes as a limited FTB Ultimine: when you mine ores or logs, connected blocks of the same kind break with it. The quest also points out that the pack already has FTB Ultimine.[2]

How does FTB Ultimine work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources for FTB Ultimine only cover its settings tooltips, so this section explains what those settings do. It is a set of controls and server-side rules for breaking or modifying many blocks in one operation. Anything the tooltips don't confirm is left out.[4]

Choosing a shape

You work with Ultimining shapes through the Ultimine key, which is the backtick key by default. Shapes are cycled with the up and down cursor keys by default. A client setting decides whether you must hold the Ultimine key to cycle. If it is off, you can cycle shapes at any time.[4]

  • Shape menu: hold the Ultimine key and sneak at the same time to show the shape selection menu. A client setting controls whether sneaking is required when you press the Ultimine key.[4]
  • Menu context lines: you can set how many shape names appear above and below the selected shape in the menu.[4]
  • Hotbar feedback: you can turn on a hotbar message that names the new shape whenever you change it.[4]
  • Overlay: there are settings for the horizontal and vertical inset, which is measured toward the center of the screen and ignored when that axis is centered. The overlay scale looks best in multiples of 0.25.[4]
  • Preview lines: you can adjust the opacity of preview lines that sit inside blocks.[4]

Costs and limits

The server controls how much Ultimining can do and what it costs you. If FTB Ranks is installed, its matching nodes take priority over these settings when present.[4]

  • Max blocks: the maximum number of blocks that can be broken or modified in one operation. FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.max_blocks node.[4]
  • Exhaustion per block: the hunger exhaustion each block costs. It can be a fractional amount, and FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.exhaustion_per_block node.[4]
  • Experience per block: the experience each block costs. It can also be fractional, and FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.experience_per_block node.[4]
  • Cooldown: the time in ticks required between uses of Ultimine, where 20 ticks is 1 second. FTB Ranks can override it with the ftbultimine.ultimine_cooldown node.[4]

Tool rules

Several server settings decide which tools can Ultimine. One requires you to have equipped either a damageable tool or an item in the ftbultimine:tools item tag. Another requires the equipped tool to be valid for the block being Ultimined, meaning it must be able to harvest dropped items.[4]

Tool protection is a separate setting. Ultimining stops once the equipped tool has this much durability or less remaining, and setting it to 0 allows tools to break.[4]

Watch out: If the tool protection setting is 0, Ultimining can use up your tool completely. Check the server's value before you run a big dig with a tool you care about.[4]

Which blocks get included

The merge-tag settings widen what counts as the same kind of block. In shapeless digging mode, any block in the listed tags that shares a block tag with the block you mined is a valid candidate. Shaped digging modes have their own list that works the same way, and its default of '*' means any block is a valid candidate.[4]

An advanced setting controls what happens when the dig meets unbreakable blocks. It can stop digging there instead of skipping over them.[4]

Extra features

  • Single crop harvesting: when enabled, right-clicking a crop without the Ultimine key held harvests it.[4]
  • Right-click crystals: this harvests vanilla Amethyst and other modded crystals. It requires the FTB Ez Crystals mod and is NeoForge only.[4]

Unverified The pack's actual values for the settings above (max blocks, cooldown, exhaustion and experience costs, tool protection, and which options are enabled) are not shown in the sources here, because no config files for this mod were available. They are set in the mod's own config files, so check them in game before relying on any default.

How do you progress through FTB Ultimine?

FTB Ultimine doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack that I can show you. Nothing in the pack's quests or recipes lays out upgrade levels for it, so I'm not going to invent a path.[2]

The one place the quest book brings it up is the Mekanism: Reactors chapter. The "Vein Mining Unit" quest quest sits in the Meka-Tool group and comes after "Modification Station" quest. It asks you for Module Vein Mining Unit, a module for the Meka-Tool.[2]

The quest describes that module as a limited version of FTB Ultimine: when you mine ores or logs, the same blocks connected to the one you broke come out with it. It then points out that the pack also has FTB Ultimine itself.[2]

The Meka-Tool quest itself follows "Atomic Disassembler" quest, and the whole chapter starts from "Mekanism: Reactors" quest.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe any tiers or an upgrade path for FTB Ultimine, and they don't say how its items are obtained. 18 of the 93 quests in the Mekanism: Reactors chapter weren't included in my sources, so check the quest book for anything else it says about the mod.

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use FTB Ultimine?

2 parts

Among the quests shown in the sources for this pack, the one whose text mentions FTB Ultimine is "Vein Mining Unit" quest. It is in the Mekanism: Reactors chapter, not in a chapter of its own.[2]

Vein Mining Unit, in the Meka-Tool group

"Vein Mining Unit" quest is labelled with the Meka-Tool group in that chapter and is listed as coming after "Modification Station" quest. Its task is to hand in one Module Vein Mining Unit.[2]

The quest text describes the Vein Mining Unit as a limited FTB Ultimine. According to the quest, when you mine ores or logs, the connected blocks of the same kind are broken along with them. It adds that you have FTB Ultimine as well.[2]

Order to follow

  1. Start with "Modification Station" quest. It asks for the Modification Station. The quest text says this is how you put Module Units into tools and armor, and that it needs Energy to operate.[2]
  2. Then do "Vein Mining Unit" quest for the Vein Mining Unit, which the quest book lists after the Modification Station quest.[2]

The Meka-Tool has its own quest, "Meka-Tool" quest, which asks for the Meka-Tool and is listed after "Atomic Disassembler" quest. Its text says the Meka-Tool can use Module Units instead of modes, and points you to their own quests.[2]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as ftbultimine, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
