What is Starbunclemania?
1 part
Starbunclemania is in the pack at version 1.5.8. The only part of it the sources describe is the Source Condenser, so that is what this page covers.[1][2]
The Source Condenser converts nearby or generated Source into Liquid Source. The quest book says this is useful once the Liquid Source is converted into gas, because you can then use it to generate power in Mekanism's Gas-Burning Generator.[2]
Where the quest book puts it
The pack's quest book covers it in the Ars Nouveau chapter. That chapter sits in the Magic Mods group and is chapter 16 of 31 in the book. It has 63 quests, and the Source Condenser quest, a quest in "Ars Nouveau", is one of them. It is a single-item quest, so you complete it by getting the Source Condenser.[2]
The quest comes after a quest called "Transferring Source". That fits the Source theme of the chapter, which also covers Source itself in "Source" quest and the different Sourcelinks that generate it.[2]
The chapter has 41 more quests that I can't show here. If you want to know what comes after the Source Condenser quest, check the Ars Nouveau chapter in the quest book.[2]
How do you get started with Starbunclemania?
6 parts
Starbunclemania builds on the familiars from Ars Nouveau. Many of its items change what a Starbuncle does, and several others are cosmetics. In this pack the quest book places the mod inside the Ars Nouveau chapter (Magic Mods group), so the order below follows that chapter.[2][3]
Get a Starbuncle and the Dominion Wand
The job items change how a Starbuncle behaves, so you want one first. The quest "Magical Squirrels" quest tells you to hold a Gold Nugget and toss it to a wild Starbuncle to get its charm. The quest "More Control" quest covers the Dominion Wand, which you use to bind a Starbuncle to a chest.[2][3]
Craft the Fluid Jar
The Fluid Containment Jar is a handy part to have early. The Source Condenser, the Starbucket and the Pickup Fluid glyph recipes all use it, so make it first.[4]

Make the Source Condenser
The quest a quest in "Ars Nouveau" comes right after "Transferring Source" quest in the quest book. The Source Condenser converts nearby or generated Source into Liquid Source. The quest says this is useful when converted into gas to generate power with Mekanism's Gas-Burning Generator.[2]
A bucket of Liquid Source costs 1,000 Source, set by [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.source_condense_cost]]. That is the mod's default value, and the pack leaves it unchanged.[5]
Give your Starbuncle a job
Use the Starbucket to change a Starbuncle's job to moving fluids around. Sneak while using it if you only want the cosmetic, which leaves its current behavior alone. Its recipe is made at the Enchanting Apparatus, which the quest "The Enchanting Apparatus" quest introduces.[2][3][4]

Recipe id: starbunclemania:star_bucket
The pack changed this recipe from the mod's own.
Fluid hauling is tuned in the server config. The Starbucket transfer rate is 1,000 and its threshold is 250, both left at the mod defaults. Lower [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_threshold]] if you want them to check and fill more often.[5]
Other jobs for later
- StarbAttery changes a Starbuncle's job to moving FE energy.[3]
- Starballoon changes a Starbuncle's job to moving Mekanism chemicals. It can be dyed.[3]
- Square Robin Mask makes a Starbuncle's item transport round-robin between inventories, and also stops pickup.[3]

Fluid glyphs
The two fluid glyphs, Glyph Pickup Fluid and Glyph Place Fluid, are tier 2 in this pack and are not starter glyphs. They cost 80 and 20 respectively, which are the mod defaults. Tier 2 spells need the first spell book upgrade, covered in "Upgrading Our Spell Book" quest.[2][4][6][7]
How does Starbunclemania work?
6 parts
Starbunclemania is about giving your familiars new jobs, plus a few helper blocks and spell glyphs. Most of what you do with it is changing what a Starbuncle does by using a special item on it. Here is how the systems work in this pack.[3]
Starbuncle jobs
Each of these items changes a Starbuncle's job. These are the jobs the mod adds:[3]
- Starbucket makes a Starbuncle transport fluids around.[3]
- StarbAttery makes it transport FE energy.[3]
- Starballoon makes it transport Mekanism chemicals. It can be dyed, and it supports Starbuncle, Drygmy and Wixie familiars.[3]
- Starbuilder makes it place blocks in specified spots.[3]
- Starminer makes it mine blocks in specified spots. You can give it a tool to use, and it defaults to an iron pick.[3]
- StarBin makes it void the items it picks up, and the items from linked chests.[3]
- Square Robin Mask tweaks its item transport to round-robin items between inventories, and also stops pickup.[3]
Fluid, energy and chemical transfer
The fluid, energy and chemical Starbuncles each have a transfer rate (ratio) and a threshold in the server config, and each value below matches the mod default. For the fluid Starbuncle, [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_ratio]] is 1,000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_threshold]] is 250. For the energy Starbuncle, [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_ratio]] is 100,000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_threshold]] is 1,000. For the chemical Starbuncle, [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_ratio]] is 1,000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_threshold]] is 250.[5]
The config notes say to lower a threshold if you need the Starbuncles to check and fill more often.[5]

Fluid Jar, Sourcelink and Source Condenser
The Fluid Containment Jar is the mod's fluid container block, and it is an ingredient in several other recipes here, including the Starbucket, the Source Condenser and the pickup glyph. The pack keeps [[config:config/starbunclemania-common.toml#General Configs.mob_jar_render]] on, so the mob jar fluid rendering is enabled.[3][4][8]

The Fluid Sourcelink converts fluid into source. The value of a milli-bucket of fluid is set by [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.fluid_to_source]], and the pack leaves that list empty. The pack also changed the Sourcelink recipe.[4][5]

The Source Condenser goes the other way and makes liquid source. [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.source_condense_cost]] is the source cost to make a bucket of liquid source, and the pack keeps it at the default of 1,000.[3][5]
There is also a Mekanism rotary recipe that takes the mod's source fluid and source gas.[4]
Wixie cauldrons
Using a Wixie Charm on certain blocks changes which recipes a Wixie will use. The mod adds these setups:[3]
- Wixie's Furnace: use the charm on a Furnace, and the Wixie uses smelt and smoke recipes.[3]
- Wixie's Crucible: use it on a Crucible, and the Wixie uses Eidolon's crucible recipes.[3]
- Wixie's Cooking Pot: use it on a Cooking Pot, and the Wixie uses cooking pot recipes.[3]
- Wixie's Cutting Board: use it on a Cutting Board, and the Wixie uses cutting board recipes.[3]
- Wixie's Stonecutter: use it on a Stonecutter, and the Wixie uses stonecutter recipes.[3]
- Wixie's Mixer: use it on a Fluid Jar, and the Wixie uses the milk and water in the side tanks for crafting recipes instead of buckets.[3]
Fluid glyphs for spells
The mod adds fluid glyphs for Ars Nouveau spells. Glyph Pickup Fluid picks up fluids from the world and fills a tank in the hotbar or next to the turret. Glyph Place Fluid places fluid in the world, draining from a tank in the same places.[3][4]
Both glyphs are enabled and neither is a starter glyph. The pickup glyph's general.glyph_tier is 2, and so is the place glyph's general.glyph_tier. The pack keeps the default costs: general.cost is 80 for pickup and general.cost is 20 for place.[6][7]
Among the augments, AOE increases the radius of targeted blocks and Pierce increases the depth. Sensitive makes pickup target the block hit directly instead of the relative position, and makes place put the fluid inside the block hit instead of relative to it.[3]
Scrolls and degrees
The mod has Fluid Scroll: Allow, Fluid Scroll: Deny and Direction Scroll. The Wyrm Degree is a cosmetic for Starbuncles and Bookwyrm familiars, and it also allows item Starbuncles to read Direction Scrolls.[3]
How do you progress through Starbunclemania?
6 parts
Starbunclemania has no quest chain of its own in this pack. In the Ars Nouveau chapter the quest book names it in one place, the Source Condenser quest. Everything else below is my grouping of the in-pack recipes by what each one asks you to have, so your progress here follows how far you are in Ars.[2][4]
Where the quest book puts it
The Ars Nouveau chapter sits in the Magic Mods group, as chapter 16 of 31 in the book. Its Source Condenser quest, a quest in "Ars Nouveau", asks for the Source Condenser and comes straight after "Transferring Source" quest. That one follows "Source" quest, which follows "Imbuement Chamber" quest, and that one follows "Magical Trees..." quest.[2]
The quest says the Condenser turns nearby or generated Source into Liquid Source. That is handy once the Liquid Source is converted into gas to power Mekanism's Gas-Burning Generator.[2]
This is the pack's recipe for the Source Condenser, and it is the unchanged mod recipe.
Stage 1: vanilla-only gear
Some items need nothing from Ars in their recipes. These are the StarBin, Starbuilder, StarbAttery and Starminer. Their in-pack recipes use only vanilla items.[4]
Stage 2: essences and fluids
The fluid side of the mod leans on the essences from "Imbued Essences" quest. The Fluid Containment Jar is the key part here, and the Source Condenser needs one too.[2][4]

Stage 3: scrolls and glyphs
The Direction Scroll, Fluid Scroll: Allow and Fluid Scroll: Deny are all made from Blank Parchment, which "Transcribing Our Spells" quest covers. The two fluid scrolls also use Water Essence. The Glyph Pickup Fluid and Glyph Place Fluid glyphs are Ars glyph recipes, and "The Scribe's Table" quest is where the quest book introduces crafting glyphs.[2][4]
Stage 4: Magebloom cosmetics
The wearable cosmetics mostly need Magebloom Fiber, which comes in with "Magical Seeds" quest. That covers the Blues Hat, Starby Ears, Whirli Propeller, Sea Bunny, Drygmy Horns and Alakakrinos Hat. The Chef Hat is then made from the Blues Hat, and the Square Robin Mask from Starbuncle Shades. The Wyrm Degree uses only vanilla wool and carpet.[2][4]
Stage 5: Enchanting Apparatus crafts
Three items are crafted at the Enchanting Apparatus from "The Enchanting Apparatus" quest: the Starballoon, the Starbucket and the Starddle [WIP]. The pack has changed the Starbucket and Starddle recipes from the mod's versions, so go by what the site shows here.[2][4]

How does Starbunclemania work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Starbunclemania connects to other mods mainly through Ars Nouveau. Its in-pack recipes that use another mod's items all draw on Ars Nouveau materials, so how far you are in Ars decides how quickly you unlock the Starbunclemania items.[4]
Ars Nouveau items in Starbunclemania recipes
- Fluid Containment Jar, Fluid Scroll: Allow and Fluid Scroll: Deny all use Water Essence in their recipes.[4]
- Direction Scroll and the two fluid scrolls are made with Blank Parchment.[4]
- Glyph Place Fluid is an Ars Nouveau glyph recipe, so it is crafted through the Ars glyph system rather than at a normal crafting table.[4]
- Starballoon is made at the Enchanting Apparatus from Ars Nouveau.[4]
- The cosmetics Alakakrinos Hat, Drygmy Horns, Sea Bunny, Blues Hat, Starby Ears, Whirli Propeller and Square Robin Mask also draw on Ars Nouveau items such as Magebloom Fiber and Starbuncle Shades. Their recipes are shown below.[4]

Source Condenser and Mekanism
Source Condenser is crafted from Ars Nouveau's Source Relay and a Fluid Jar.[4]
The quest a quest in "Ars Nouveau" sits in the Ars Nouveau chapter, in the Magic Mods group (chapter 16 of 31 in the book), and comes after the quest Transferring Source. It says the Source Condenser converts nearby or generated Source into Liquid Source. The quest adds that this is useful when converted into gas to generate power via Mekanism's Gas-Burning Generator.[2]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Starbunclemania?
3 parts
In this pack's quest book, this mod shows up in one quest. It is in the "Ars Nouveau" chapter (63 quests), which is in the "Magic Mods" group and is chapter 16 of 31 in the book.[2]
The Source Condenser quest
The quest a quest in "Ars Nouveau" asks you to get the Source Condenser. Its text says the Source Condenser converts nearby or generated Source into Liquid Source, and that this is useful when converted into gas to generate power via Mekanism's Gas-Burning Generator.[2]
The book gives this quest no title of its own, so it is named after the item it asks for.[2]
How you get there
The quest comes after "Transferring Source" quest. Here is the route through the chapter that leads to it, as the book lays it out:[2]
- "Welcome To Ars Nouveau!" quest has no prerequisite and asks for the Novice Spell Book.[2]
- "Upgrading Our Spell Book" quest comes after the opener and asks for the Apprentice Spell Book.[2]
- "Creating Your First Spell" quest is a checkmark quest that comes after the first two. Its text walks you through a basic Projectile Break spell, and says you only know Break and Harm for now.[2]
- "Magical Trees..." quest comes after Creating Your First Spell.[2]
- "Imbuement Chamber" quest comes after Magical Trees and asks for the Imbuement Chamber and Source Gems. Its text says you have no way to make Source just yet, but the Chamber gathers some slowly on its own.[2]
- "Source" quest comes after the Imbuement Chamber quest and asks for the Source Jar.[2]
- "Transferring Source" quest comes after the Source quest and asks for the Relay. Its text says Relays transfer Source between Source Jars or other Relays.[2]
- a quest in "Ars Nouveau" is the Source Condenser quest itself, and it comes after the Relay quest.[2]
What sits beside it
Four other quests also come after the Relay quest: "Warping Source" quest, "Source Splitting" quest, "Source Deposits" quest and "Source Collection" quest.[2]
No other quest in this chapter lists the Source Condenser quest as a prerequisite.[2]
Which Starbunclemania config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.23.0 guide
Here's the quick version: for every option in the files below that lists a mod default, the pack's value is the same as that default. Nothing has been tweaked, so you can follow the mod's normal behaviour and only change things if you want to.[9][10][11]
Starbuncle transfer settings
These live in config/starbunclemania-server.toml. Each kind of transfer starbuncle has a ratio (its transfer rate) and a threshold. Here's what the pack uses:[11]
- Fluid starbuncles: [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_ratio]] is 1000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_threshold]] is 250.[11]
- Gas starbuncles: [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_ratio]] is 1000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_threshold]] is 250.[11]
- Energy starbuncles: [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_ratio]] is 100,000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_threshold]] is 1000.[11]
Source and fluids
[[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.source_condense_cost]] is the source cost to make a bucket of liquid source, and the pack keeps it at 1000. [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.fluid_to_source]] sets the value of a milli-bucket of fluid converted into source by the sourcelink, with an example entry of minecraft:lava=1.6. The pack leaves it as an empty list, so it adds no custom entries.[11]
Fluid glyphs
Each fluid glyph has its own file in config/starbunclemania. general.enabled and general.enabled are both true, so both glyphs are on.[9][10]
general.glyph_tier and general.glyph_tier are both set to 2. general.starter and general.starter are both false, so neither is a starter glyph.[9][10]
- Place fluid: general.cost is 20.[9]
- Pickup fluid: general.cost is 80.[10]
general.per_spell_limit and general.per_spell_limit are both 2,147,483,647, which is effectively no limit on how many times each glyph can appear in one spell.[9][10]
The augment cost overrides, augment limits and invalid combos options (for example general.augment_cost_overrides, general.augment_limits and general.invalid_combos) are all empty lists for both glyphs, so the pack adds no extra restrictions or cost changes to them.[9][10]
Rendering
[[config:config/starbunclemania-common.toml#General Configs.mob_jar_render]] enables rendering of the mob jar fluid, and the pack sets it to true.[12]
